FOCUS ON SUMMER RESIDENCIES & WORKSHOPS

A

rtist residencies provide dedicated time and space for diving head first into creative work. Away from their usual environment and free from distraction, imaginations can soar. The Northeast is rich with artist alcoves—each with its own unique accommodations, working environment, and fields of study. It’s not hard to find one to match your needs and expectations for a creative, concentrated endeavor this summer.

Maine 26 Split Rock Cove Summer Art Workshops Dates: May through August, two workshops per month. Application Deadline: TBA Along the shore of mid-coast Maine, 26 Split Rock Cove is a welcome retreat offering studio space, living arrangements and workshops in a peaceful, nurturing environment. Workshops focus on writing and book making and are open to beginning and practicing artists and writers. The Artist Retreat Space apartments are quiet, live/work one-bedrooms within walking distance of the shore and an optional studio space is available for renters staying less than three months. April 1 for Workshop/Regular applicants. Haystack Mountain is an international, non-profit studio program offering two-week residency programs and one- and two-week workshops for craft-makers and visual artists. The Open Studio Residency is a two-week retreat designed to foster artistic exploration and provide uninterrupted time to work between six studios: ceramics, fiber, graphics, iron, jewelry, and wood. Artists experiment with materials,

technology, craft, and their creative process on an award-winning campus designed by Edward Larrabee Barnes. Studios are open 24/7, with classes scheduled Monday through Friday. The Haystack community is approximately 85 participants, including staff, students, and internationally known faculty artists. Final payment due 30 days prior. Artists who pay their tuition in full by March 31 receive a $100 discount. Watershed is a place where artists with diverse approaches and backgrounds participate in a unique collective experience. Clay is the core of the Watershed experience, though many artists use their time to explore, contemplate, and experiment with various approaches to creating. Open-concept studios are in a 16,000 square foot building once used as a barn and are equipped with standard ceramic equipment such as slabrollers, mixers, pugmill, wheels, extruder, and hotbox. Massachusetts Goetemann Residency at Rocky Neck Art Colony Artist Residency Dates: Three One-month Sessions: May 15–June 15, July 9–August 10, September 6–October 6. offers a private live/work studio in the heart of a thriving art community. The artists selected evidence high-level accomplishment, originality and seriousness of purpose. One applicant will be selected for each term. Artists at any stage of professional development—who are adopting a fresh perspective on visual issues and personal interpretation, as well as those working in more traditional forms—are encouraged to apply.
