FOCUS ON CAPE ANN
few days on Cape Ann can wear an art lover out (in a really good day-at-thebeach kind of way)! For anyone traveling to Cape Ann to enjoy it’s culturally rich epicenter, there are just too many choices (again, in a really good more-is-better kind of way). From one art lover to another, here’s some advice: take a deep breath and go slow. Know that you won’t have time to see it all, but what you do see is going to be so worth the trip. A good place to begin is to check out the galleries that represent multiple artists and media. Flatrocks Gallery, on the northern coast of Gloucester, has an impressive collection of art by both established and emerging local artists in a small, cozy space brimming with creative energy. Curating several different shows a year, owners Cynthia Switzer Roth and Anne Marie Crotty (both artists, themselves) provide constantly evolving examples of the area’s tradition of artistic excellence, with a range of media and prices that make fine art accessible to all. In Rockport, Canterbury Hill Studio & Gallery represents more than 50 artist and artisans with works in metal, ceramics, textiles, glass, wood, mosaics and more. Paintings, drawings, jewelry, and photography, and even whimsical dolls are all part of the collection. Just down the street, celebrating its first anniversary this fall, is the DeLouise Gallery, featuring the art of owner Dan DeLouise, as well as works in sculpture, watercolor, oil paintings, photography, and precious metals by others. “Ever since moving to Cape Ann and discovering its natural beauty and its residents’ love for the arts, I’ve dreamed of opening a gallery here.” Upcoming, enjoy an exhibition of art made from original stamps. In its fifth year, iartcolony is a welcoming gallery in the Rockport home of owners Bob and Jill Whitney Armstrong—envisioned as a space to show Jill’s colorful oil paintings, as well as bring people together in a mutual appreciation of inventive local art. Stop in to see why Jill was juried into the Rockport Art Association’s Legacy Show last year as the “oil painter of the future,” and ask the Armstrongs about out of bounds 2014, which they are curating with artists from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts (Read the related story on page 30). A glass bead maker and metal smith, Beth creates contemporary, elegant jewelry highlighted by the colors and textures inherent in her glass. Pure gold granules and silver threads accent the surface of Beth’s lamp-worked beads, reflecting a signature style that has been recognized in publications and juried exhibitions across the country. Highly talented artisan potters are another abundant find on Cape Ann. Marty Morgan’s studio and gallery is in the converted garage of her home in Gloucester, overlooking the Mill River. While she spent more than 30 years making primarily functional pieces, her current work features “quarry vessels” and wall tiles made from highly textured slabs of porcelain. Marty

invites visitors to stop into her studio, and also to sit by the river to watch the swans and egrets. Cynthia Curtis Pottery, near Pigeon Cove in Rockport, features ocean-inspired creations: coral vases, undersea lamps, berry bowls, lobster and starfish ornaments, scallop and clamshells, mugs, and platters. As objects that fit so well into the seaside community, you’ll find her work in shops and galleries around Gloucester and Rockport. Anna Kasabian’s work identity is also very close to home. A porcelain artisan in Manchesterby-the-Sea, and a native of Cape Ann, Anna’s sculptural (and functional) pieces evoke the forms of flowers, sea plants and ocean waves, and are all hand-built without the use of a potter’s wheel. This is her choice: “only by shaping every piece directly in my hand can I achieve the full range of energy and expression I am seeking.”

CAPE ANN Sculpture enthusiasts will appreciate the work of David Calvo of Calvo Studio in Gloucester. Designing in both contemporary and classical styles, and executing with impeccable old-world artistry, some of Calvo’s architectural creations include hand-carved custom furniture, ornamental pipe organ screens, fireplace mantels, and entry doors. The studio offers a wide range of carving classes, workshops, and seminars for both the beginner and intermediate student. From her gallery in Gloucester, Coco Berkman of Stage Fort Press is teaching linoleum printmaking classes this summer. An established printmaker whose prints, etchings and lithographs reflect her love of drawing from her imagination and images gleaned from literature, Coco feels that “Fundamentally, printmaking is drawing, taken to a more refined level. The
choices I make regarding color are challenging and at times demand bravery on my part. I am always reminded that mistakes are a good thing when making art. They are signs of new potential, forcing an artist into unchartered territory.” Another visual artist embracing the challenges and opportunities of art-making is Erica Daborn. A long-time faculty member of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Erica’s surrealist drawings and paintings—which are meant to send messages of unseen understanding—have been celebrated with exhibitions and purchases by major museums world-wide. She is currently working on an installation, accompanied by a blog (Dialogues with Mother Earth), to raise climate change awareness. Locally, her work can be seen at the Clark Gallery in Lincoln. Rockport, painter Karen Tusinski’s paintings explore the contrast and geometry in nature— in a way that is bright, energetic and abstract. Common scenes in her work are poppies, pebbly beaches, and calm oceans, to which she offers a new view on the seemingly ordinary everyday stills. Presenting a bold, new art technique, is glass shard painter Eleanor Ruth Fisher. The Lynn, MA artist creates colorful, contemplative, joy-full works using shards of glass, stones, and bits of jewelry. Cottages, ocean scenes, gardens, and female figures are subjects of her paintings and decorative satin folding screens, as Eleanor seeks to capture the “essence of life.” Sticking with oils, acyrlics, and colored pencils, Leslie Heffron’s paintings and drawings are equally as colorful. CAPE ANN drawn to “imagery with text and luminosity,” her figurative work is inspired by roadside scenes—barns, farm stands, retro diners, and of course, the beach. Upon observation, it should come as no surprise that she pulls inspiration from such greats as Ed Ruscha, David Hockney, and Edward Hopper when creating these works. Award-winning artist, Susanne E. White of White Seagull Gallery in Rockport shares a fascination with the ordinary things in life—particularly shells, rocks, seaweed, sticks, leaves, discarded feathers, and water—which she honors in her acrylic paintings. She is a member of the Copley Society of Art, the International Society of Acrylic Painters and the Concord, North Shore, and Rockport Art Associations. Original fabrics by the “Folly Cove Designers,” whose block printed designs were nationally renowned and are still widely collected today, are a permanent exhibit planned for the Cape Ann Museum. And, the tradition has carried on. The Sarah Elizabeth Shop in Rockport (named after an original member of the Folly Cove Designers), offers original block printed fabric by current owner Julia Garrison, as well as by the timeless designs of the women who inspired and taught her. CAPE ANN Judith Sargent Murray, an early adovocate of women’s rights. The Museum has a small collection of artworks by John Singer Sargent, with works by other significant American artists, and a fine collection of early American decorative arts. The Ipswich Museum was originally founded in 1890, and its collection reflects more than 100 years of acquisition and preservation, honoring Ipswich’s social, cultural, and architectural history. The museum’s goal is to make the treasures of the past more accessible, relevant, and connected to modern lives. In Wenham, MA, the Wenham Museum puts a spotlight on the artifacts of childhood, domestic life, and the history and culture of Boston’s North Shore. CAPE ANN oldest continuously operating art colonies in the United States. Dozens of working artists—from painters, potters and textile designers to photographers and jewelers—work and display in intimate Rocky Neck galleries during the summer. Rocky Neck’s new Cultural Center offers programs to support the mission of the colony: to nurture excellence in the visual arts and to celebrate the artistic culture of Rocky Neck. From August 7–September 1, the Rocky Neck Cultural Center will host the Cape Ann Ceramics Festival. Committed to the education and promotion of ceramic arts, the Festival partners once again with the Pucker Gallery (Boston) and Lacoste Gallery (Concord, MA) and includes exhibits, artist talks, workshops, and more. In its 93rd year, the Rockport Art Association is one of the oldest and most active art organizations in the country. RAA’s galleries show rotating exhibits, including a seasonal show of its members’ work (there are 250), a regular exhibit of its museum collection, and curated specialty shows. An active educational institution, the RAA hosts many events throughout the year—including an art auction—and offers a schedule of classes, lectures, and art walks. Local Colors in Gloucester, an exciting artists’ cooperative gallery, began as a small group of artists who rented exhibit space together to boost holiday sales. Finding support from each other and the community, the experiment turned into an obvious success, and for the past 25 years, it has flourished into a vibrant gallery—and is Cape Ann’s oldest artist cooperative.

Collaboration is a common and necessary practice in the arts, and is likely critical to Cape Ann’s recognition and success as an arts destination. A notable example of not just artists, but art organizations working together is seArts (Society for the Encouragement of Arts on Cape Ann). Formed in 2000, with the purpose of exploring opportunities in cultural economic development, seArts has since developed into a coalition that cultivates Cape Ann’s reputation by building partnerships and creating programs. With all this in mind, it’s not surprising that in 2013, the Massachusetts Cultural Council voted— unanimously—to officially designate downtown Gloucester as the Gloucester Harbortown Cultural District. The honor offers statewide recognition of the area as a focal point for the arts and of creating a sense of place. Throughout the

CAPE ANN year, this beautiful historic downtown offers a variety of museums, galleries, bookstores, music venues, restaurants, and festivals destined for exploration. Performing arts also play a role in Cape Ann’s cultural story, and travelers should take advantage of what’s happening on stage while visiting Cape Ann. For theater-lovers, the 35th season of the Gloucester Stage Company is underway with Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris, Auld Lang Syne, 4000 Miles, and Fences in the season line-up. The GSC has a long history of presenting high quality professional theater that has earned the company several awards. Accessible to all, the first 3 pm Saturday matinee of each production is ticketed at “pay what you can.” Music enthusiasts should plan to attend the Newburyport Chamber Music Festival, which
provides a series of high caliber and stimulating live music events at an eclectic collection of public and private venues. This summer, the festival schedule includes 12 internationally renowned performers, with David Yang as artistic director. Enjoy concerts, lectures, open rehearsals, panel discussions, and family events from August 9th through the 17th. With so much going on (and we’ve barely scratched the surface here), it helps to have one strong point of reference to depend on. So, before you travel, be sure to download the Cape Ann Cultural District’s new mobile app. The free app includes information on artists, museums, historic sites, attractions, and way-finding for each of the four state-designated Cape Ann cultural districts—Essex River, Gloucester’s Harbor Town, Rocky Neck, and Rockport.
