ape Cod is incomparable. For a narrow spit of low lying pine forests and endless beaches, it offers a remarkably rich history. The Pilgrims dropped anchor off Provincetown in 1620; today, its historic charm and maritime character, famed seafood and towering dunes attract visitors from around the globe. Rolling bayside down Route 6A, the “Old King’s Highway” whisks you past centuries-old churches under a leafy canopy of ocean-brushed trees, bright inlets of blue-water bays, and colonial era homes gently weathered by the salty sea breeze. It’s not hard to see why artists flock to set up shop along this picturesque peninsula—it’s like nowhere else in the world.

Provincetown has owned a colorful reputation as America’s oldest and longest running art colony since 1899 when painter Charles Hawthorne founded the Cape Cod School of Art. Students and teachers were drawn to the area for its light and its landscapes. In time, it grew to become a year-round arts community of young, aspiring artists working with established mentors. Today, Provincetown is home to a vibrant arts scene with an atmosphere and energy of experimentation, teaching and learning. Integral to the community comprising the Provincetown Art Colony, the Provincetown Art Association and Museum embodies the qualities that make the town an enduring American center
for the arts. Established in 1914, it is now in its Centennial year and serving as Cape Cod’s most widely attended art museum. Located nearby in the East End of town on Bradford St., the Berta Walker Gallery is a point of significant cultural heritage. For 25 years, Berta Walker—whose family established a legacy in the art colony—has exhibited Provincetownaffiliated artists with a variety of styles, and has had the pleasure of representing local legends such as Ross Moffett and Charles Hawthorne. Speaking of local legends on Bradford St., The Provincetown Theater is building on the legacy of Tennessee Williams, Susan Glaspell and Eugene O’Neill in forging its own identity by

Their state-of-the-art facility is active year-round, hosting or producing community based and professional theater, theater arts classes and a children’s theater program. Along the bustling corridor of Commercial Street, you’ll find an alluring mix of eclectic shops, restaurants and galleries. Gallery Voyeur showcases the large-scale original paintings of artist Johniene Papandreas. Her paintings are created entirely by brush on heavyweight muslin in casein, a paint derived from milk or soy protein, which is not often seen today. This year’s series Angels & Demons explores the emotional triggers behind our pre-conceptions of good and evil and confront the slippery slope on which our presumptions can place us. Galería
Cubana showcases paintings, prints and mixed media works solely by artists currently living and working in Cuba. As Gallery Director, Michelle Wojcik holds one of approximately 30 licenses issued by the U.S. Treasury Department to import artworks from Cuba. Her gallery in Provincetown is the first of two, the other being in Boston’s South End. Julie Heller Gallery is the oldest gallery in Provincetown and is duly committed to the artists who have shaped the town’s cultural past. Housing the most extensive Provincetown art available for purchase anywhere, much of the gallery is hung salon style with the walls filled end to end with a variety of art works. As the second space of Julie Heller Gallery, Julie Heller East is evolving into its own bustling hub of art
in the quiet east end of town, directly across from the PAAM. Artist TJ Walton has lived and painted fulltime in Provincetown since 1989. Her studio gallery on the west end of Commercial Street is where she has garnered a following and strong reputation for being at the forefront of a new movement of self-taught artists who prefer to learn by trial and error. She is well known for her paintings of still life, buffalo, and interpretive and colorful renditions of whale tails. AMP: Art Market Provincetown is a live contemporary gallery space dedicated to exhibiting multi-disciplined work by visual, conceptual and performance artists, filmmakers, and writers. Exhibitions, events, and outdoor installations are cutting-edge, envelope-pushing showcases—a perfect fit for Commercial Street.

Wellfleet, found a mere twenty minutes from Provincetown, is a Cape Cod town long known for its thriving arts community and quality galleries. For 23 years, Jeff Soderbergh has created custom sustainable furnishings using reclaimed historical structures. Out of his studio based in Newport, Rhode Island, Soderbergh focuses on creating one sustainable heirloom piece at a time, each one exceptionally crafted using timeless woodworking joinery. Antique wood, metal, glass and stone have all been gracefully transformed into original works of art. His work is on

At Harmon Gallery, artists Vincent Amicosante and Traci Harmon-Hay have brought together a group of contemporary artists who add a dash of urban flash to the Wellfleet gallery scene. Museum Chief Curator Bonnie Stacy. Touring the Cape and Islands during the summer is a timeless New England experience. If it isn’t already, why not make this year’s trip the beginning of a tradition, and let Art New England be your guide. NEW BEDFORD The city of New Bedford, located about an hour from the heart of Cape Cod, (and a mere
30 minutes from Providence, RI) is home to a bevy of historical and cultural touchstones. Nicknamed “The Whaling City,” and “The City that Lit the World,” New Bedford was one of the most important whaling and fishing ports in the world during the 19th century and is still today the top fishing port in the country. Visit DestinationNewBedford.org before your trip for the best advice in attractions, hotels, restaurants, shopping, and exciting events. Every second Thursday of the month is one of the most exciting nights in New Bedford. It’s when AHA!, New Bedford’s free Downtown Cultural Night and collaborative organization, joins hands with museums, galleries, boutiques and restaurants for the city’s monthly free, family-friendly arts and culture celebration. Participating venues host art exhibitions, live music, theater skits, educational lectures, and more, all in the name of a special, changing theme highlighting a cultural aspect of the city. This summer, Thursday, July 10 is centered on the theme “Kids Rule,” and Thursday, August 14 is “A Midsummer’s Night Eve.” Home to one of the largest concentrations of artists for its size, quaint and coastal New Bedford is filled with galleries, museums and theaters producing first-rate art works, exhibitions and performances. New Bedford Symphony Orchestra, now in its 99th season, continues to bring the enjoyment of music to residents and visitors. With a seven-concert subscription series that includes classical and pops concerts featuring world-class guest artists, this professional orchestra regularly performs in the beautiful and historic Zeiterion Performing Arts Center on Purchase Street in downtown. New Bedford Art Museum/ArtWorks! merged early this year into one of city’s greatest fine arts powerhouses. Located in the bustling downtown district, the building, originally a

This summer the museum features Synergy: Ocean Stories, an intriguing look at coastal marine science through the eyes of regional artists with special programs and workshops throughout the summer. Crowell’s Fine Art & Framing Studio has been the region’s trusted premier art framing studio for 115 years. Located in the Whaling National Historical Park, the gallery at Crowell’s Fine Art is proud to represent a core group of artists from the Swain School of Painters and emerging mid-career artists from the South Coast. New Bedford abounds with talented artists. Area-based artist and educator Peter Michael Martin has spent the past 30 years designing
and mastering black paper cuttings. This past June, he presented Martin & Moby at the New Bedford Whaling Museum, which featured a series of large-scale cut tyvek works inspired by Herman Melville’s Moby Dick. Also living and working in the New Bedford area, Tracy Silva Barbosa is an independent artist working in both glass installations, regional public arts projects, and paintings on glass. Barbosa incorporates cultural contrasts into the many layers of her pieces. You can see her work at her studio at the Ropeworks, one element that makes up the group of New Bedford Open Studios (NBOS). Now in its 10th Anniversary year, NBOS is made up of nine separate studios and buildings through the city of New Bedford. The NBOS enriches the arts and culture of the region through the promotion of local art-
