Peabody Essex Museum
The mission of the Peabody Essex Museum is to celebrate outstanding artistic and cultural creativity by collecting, stewarding and interpreting objects of art and culture in ways that increase knowledge, enrich the spirit, engage the mind and stimulate the senses. Through its exhibits, programs, publications, media and related activities, PEM strives to create experiences that transform people’s lives. PEM is one of the nation’s major museums for Asian art. It presents the earliest collections of Native American and Oceanic art in the nation. The historic houses and gardens, and American decorative art and maritime art collections provide an unrivaled spectrum of New England’s heritage over 300 years.
This summer, Cape Ann Plein Air and PEM collaborated to bring CAPA2021 artists to workshops on the famed Derby Wharf to lead workshops for artists of all levels and abilities. In two days more than 50 artists gathered to watch John Caggiano and Susan Lynn demonstrate their plein air talents, and then created paintings of their own.
This collaboration is an important one and CAPA is thrilled that PEM has chosen to partner with us in such a meaningful way.
Cape Ann Museum
The Cape Ann Museum tells multiple stories, all relating to a single remarkable place. From its earliest days as a fishing and shipping post to its mid-19th century role in the granite industry, to its singular charms of light and sea that have attracted countless artists from the 19th century to the present, Cape Ann boasts a rich and varied culture of significant historical, industrial and artistic achievement. The museum’s fine art collection includes the largest grouping of works by native son and renowned marine artist Fitz Henry Lane as well as other prominent painters and sculptors who lived on, visited or were inspired by Cape Ann. The permanent collection includes fine and decorative arts, and artifacts from the major industries of the area—the fisheries and granite quarrying.
During the week, Cape Ann Plein Air and CAM will feature CAPA2021 artists painting on the famed Cape Ann Museum Green, home to three historic properties. Artists will paint along with students and their art will be for sale that afternoon. CAPA is thrilled with this new collaboration with such a renowned museum located in our own back yard!
