LETTERS, WE GET LETTERS! T
oday it seems that you can’t buy a roll of duct tape without reviewing your experience on some website! This got me thinking. We receive
evaluations of our trips every day. It’s this feedback that helps us craft the amazing tours and getaways—at such incredible prices—that our members expect. So, I went back and looked at hundreds of them to see if this avalanche of comments, praise and suggestions would help new members understand what The Travel Club is really all about. That’s when I reread a recent letter from a member who had us plan a special trip for her family, built around several of our popular Italy programs. It sums up the essence of a Travel Club experience: Dear Travel Club, Our trip to Italy was wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. Together we planned a fantastic tour and you did such a great job putting all my hopes and dreams together for this family vacation. Everything was perfect. The hotels were first class, the included meals at the restaurants were fabulous, and what can I say about [our tour guide] Gabriella! She is a “gem.” She went above and beyond… I will never forget this family trip. I will treasure the memories for a life time. I have already recommended The Travel Club…to everyone who has asked me and told them I would book another tour in a heartbeat. Again, many thanks for a job so well done. Rosemarie S., June 2014
There you have it—personal service, attention to detail, knowledge of the destination, memories galore and unbeatable value—that’s a Travel Club experience.

LIGHT UP THE SKY: A group of New York theater-types gather in the Ritz-Carlton Boston hotel room of a grand, charismatic leading lady. The hopeful young playwright and a cynical old one, the high-strung director and the boorish producer, and, of course, the leading lady’s mother are all in seventh heaven expecting a smash out-of-town triumph. But after a disastrous reception from the Boston audience, everyone wishes they had opened in Oklahoma. Light Up the Sky is an affectionate and hilarious look at the backstage foibles and frailties of that unique and fascinating microcosm of the world: theater folk! Moss Hart’s 1948 Classic!

AMERICA’S NATIONAL PARKS & NATURAL WONDERS
“T
Monday August 31—Tuesday, September 8, 2015
here is nothing so American as our national parks.”—Franklin D. Roosevelt. From the wild splendor of Yellowstone to Zion National Park—a paradise “too stunning for mere mortals”—we’ll explore an exceptional natural landscape on this new travel program as we visit five of America’s most popular National Parks. Considered the “Crown Jewel,” an unspoiled living museum, Yellowstone is also the first Park, established by Ulysses Grant in 1872. Witness a spectacular combination of mountains and meadows, lakes, hot springs and waterfalls, wildlife, and, of course, Old Faithful. Home to the most rugged mountains in America, Grand Teton National Park’s sky-scraping jagged peaks are often called “mountains of the imagination.” We’ll “cowboy up” in the resort town of Jackson, Wyoming, have a chance to float on the Snake River and enjoy chuckwagon food and western entertainment. Marvel at the sandstone cliffs and delicately sculpted pillars that create a magicallycolored “forest of stone” in Bryce Canyon National Park. Described as both enchanting and spectacular, the massive sandstone cliffs of Zion National Park will charm us in their colors of cream, pink, and red. We’ve saved the best for last as we journey to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World, for some of the most breathtaking views to be had in the U.S. On the last night of our vacation we’ll trade the majestic scenery of these amazing parks for the stunning neon glitter of a man-made wonder—Las Vegas!

he Spirit of the West lives on in South Dakota and this weeklong getaway is a wonderful chance to escape the bustle of modern life and reconnect with our country’s rich history. We’ll witness 2.5 billion years of geological history in a single day via the steep canyons, spires and buttes created by the stark, beautiful environment of the Badlands and the 865-foot Devil’s Tower Monument (made famous in Close Encounters of the Third Kind). Excursions to the man-made rock formations of Mount Rushmore and the stillin-progress Crazy Horse Memorial are equally breathtaking. Spend three exciting nights in the gold rush town of Deadwood, former residence of true American originals Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane. At the Hampton Inn, however, with its 24-hour casino and indoor pool, you won’t be roughing it like they did. The Old West lives on…

ou’re going to love this experience! Discover the musical culture and rich historic tapestry of America’s iconic music meccas, Memphis and Nashville, and see where Blues and Rock & Roll began! In Memphis we’ll stroll along famous Beale Street—a National Historic Landmark lined with bars, restaurants, shops and live music venues. Memphis also means Elvis—her most famous son—and Graceland. We’ll enjoy a morning tour to learn about this musical heritage that ends with a visit to Elvis’ palatial estate—filled with the largest collection of gold records in the world as well as his elaborate stage costumes and jewelry—and his burial site in the Meditation Garden. During your free time this afternoon you might visit the impressive Stax Museum of American Soul Music, the Memphis Rock ‘n Soul Museum (a satellite of the Smithsonian), the Gibson Guitar Factory or the National Civil Rights Museum. You’ll have a chance to get acquainted with Memphis’ other king: legendary Bar-b-que at a slew of famous BBQ joints such as Charlie Vergos’ Rendezvous, Tops Bar-B-Q, Central BBQ and Neely’s Bar-B-Que. Nashville, where country music was born, has become the new darling of the South; it was one of the most popular international travel destinations of 2014 and ranked #15 on The New York Times list of 52 Places to Go in 2014. We’ll hit the highlights as we visit famous Music Row, Historic RCA Studio B, the Parthenon and the one-of-a-kind Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. Nashville’s musical legacy is best preserved at the Grand Ole Opry and we have reserved seats for an evening performance before a day of touring that starts in Lynchburg at the Jack Daniel’s Distillery and ends with dinner and entertainment at the famed Wildhorse Saloon.

his exclusive Travel Club vacation combines two astonishing destinations brimming with thousands of years of history, extraordinary art and architecture, sumptuous cuisine and stunning scenery. Rome, both ancient and modern, is an immense open-air museum with a treasure to be found on every corner. We’ll introduce you to this eternal city on a panoramic coach tour and include a half-day visit to St. Peter’s Square and Basilica and the Vatican Museum. Even if you’ve been to Rome before (or a dozen times!), you haven’t discovered all its secrets. You may have seen the Colosseum, but have you seen the secret keyhole with the stunning view of St. Peter’s? You’ve been to the Pantheon, but have you visited Santa Maria del Popolo, one of the churches in the film Angels and Demons? A short flight brings us to Valletta, the 16th-century fortified capital of Malta, with its Renaissance cathedrals and baroque palaces, a vibrant café culture, eclectic shops and historic cobbled streets packed with 320 monuments. An ancient Mediterranean trading hub, Malta’s culture is a mix of Italian, French, North African and Greek—all with a hint of English—in this former British colony where English is the official second language. We’ve arranged a tour highlighting the Barrakka Gardens and the Grand Master’s Palace in Valletta and an amazing full-day excursion that includes the island of Gozo, Victoria and the Citadel and two Game of Thrones filming locations—the medieval city of Mdina (King’s Landing) and the Azure Window, a stunning rock formation at Dwerja (Daenerys’ memorable wedding scene)!

NAPLES, SORRENTO and ROME Saturday, October 10–Tuesday, October 20, 2015
ST. PETER’S SQUARE, ROME
SORRENTO
Naples—“Italy’s most red-blooded F rom city”—to sunny Sorrento—the gateway to
the Amalfi Coast—to one-of-a-kind Rome, this new Travel Club vacation is a classic! Described as “real-life” Italy, Naples is busy, lived-in and a little chaotic. Although the historic center—a UNESCO World Heritage Site—drips with ancient architecture, cathedrals and churches, it’s also where Neapolitans live, work and shop as they have for centuries. We’ve included (in our opinion) two of the most vital things to do in Naples: indulge in pizza in the place it originated and visit the world-famous National Archaeological Museum, home to pieces from the excavations at Pompeii. En route to Sorrento we’ll visit the doomed city of Pompeii (destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D.) for a guided tour of the ruins followed by lunch and a wine-tasting. Sorrento is all charm with cobblestone streets lined with lemon trees, lively piazzas filled with flowers and sidewalk cafés, an unspoiled old quarter and a lively main shopping street all perched on a cliff overhanging the sea. We’ll enjoy a full-day excursion to the magical isle of Capri with its busy waterfront, grand villas, white-washed houses and the lush scent of bougainvillea in the air. A drive along the legendary Costiera Amalfitana brings us to Amalfi—medieval architecture and winding lanes nestled in lemon and olive groves spilling down the cliffside—and Positano—the coast’s most picturesque town with “houses tumbling down to the sea in a cascade of sun-bleached peach, pink and terracotta,” says Lonely Planet. Some might say we’ve saved the best for last as we journey to Rome for three nights and touring that includes a guided panoramic coach “see the sights” tour and a visit to St. Peter’s Square, the Sistine Chapel and admission to the Vatican Museum.

TAORMINA
is dramatic—in every sense of the word. S icily Lying only 80 miles from the coast of North
Africa, Sicily has seen invaders—Greeks, Romans, Arabs, French and many more—all attracted to its beauty, fertility and magic. That doesn’t sound all that dramatic, you say? Try this: Sicily is both blessed by the spectacular, turquoise Mediterranean Sea and cursed by volcanoes and earthquakes. Not enough? Quintessentially Italian yet uniquely Sicilian, the island has seen plagues, family vendettas, poverty and prosperity. It has always attracted poets, painters and lovers of beauty. It has mountains and beaches and vineyards; its cities and towns are both ancient and modern. In short—it’s dramatic! Join us this October as we explore Sicily from the storied streets of Palermo to the most famous of all Italian resort towns—Taormina. In between, we’ll visit Marsala and sip wine; spend a day marveling at the Greek temples in Agrigento; wander the streets of Catania; and, finally, discover the charms of Taormina, to this day, a hot spot for the rich and famous. We’ll be treated to an excursion to Mount Etna and have plenty of time to explore on our own. Now that’s dramatic!

the Club for an exclusive holiday includJ oin ing Northern Ireland! We’ll visit Belfast—
recently voted one of the world’s top destinations by The National Geographic Traveller—and Derry—awarded the prestigious title “U.K. City of Culture 2013”—before we head south to Dublin. “Today Northern Ireland seems rejuvenated,” says Lonely Planet. Belfast has a vibrant nightlife, excellent restaurants and the Titanic Visitor Centre—“a comprehensive and fascinating exhibition detailing the construction, launch and maiden voyage of the city’s famous and illfated liner.” We depart Belfast along the scenic (some say magical) route of the Nine Glens of Antrim and visit Northern Ireland’s only World Heritage site—the Giant’s Causeway! Science says the causeway, formed of massive basalt columns, was created by volcanic activity. Myth says it was carved by the mighty hero-giant Finn McCool. A city of rich cultural and architectural heritage, Derry (or Londonderry) is vibrant and bustling and still surrounded by 17th-century defensive walls. We’ll wind our way along the Grand Atlantic Drive with its remarkable scenery of beaches, bays, inlets and rocky headlands before heading south to Dublin—home to Oscar Wilde, Guinness and U2! With pubs famous for traditional entertainment, 1,000 plus years of history, hot restaurants and trendy galleries, Dublin is a cosmopolitan capital whose culture has been brilliantly preserved.

his Travel Club classic remains one of the best values in travel today! For these trips we’ve chosen accommodations in the heart of Montparnasse, located along the northern edge of the 14th arrondissement, known for its lively nightlife, much of which is based around historic brasseries like La Coupole, La Rotonde and Le Select. Once a warren of artists’ studios and swinging cafés, this neighborhood takes you back to the café society of the early 20th century—imagine having a drink with Picasso, Modigliani, Hemingway, Man Ray or Trotsky. Don’t miss the rooftop terrace of Tour Montparnasse for the best panoramic view of the city and treat yourself to a cocktail at Le Bar Américain on the 56th floor. The Hotel Villa Modigliani offers a secluded inner courtyard and garden, proximity to the Jardin du Luxembourg and Saint Germain des Prés, and is also convenient to the Paris Metro. This neighborhood is perfect for strolling, dining, and shopping in the Galeries Lafayette Montparnasse. You may want to visit Rue d’Odessa for its countless pancake houses (a specialty from France’s Brittany region) and the pedestrianized Rue Daguerre.

xperience a “holiday card come to life” and celebrate in Old World style at the Christmas Markets of Budapest, Vienna and Prague. The festivities begin in cosmopolitan Budapest, where we’ll enjoy a “major landmarks” tour including Heroes’ Square, Fisherman’s Bastion and medieval Matthias Church. Later we’ll have leisure time to visit Vörösmarty Square which is transformed into the oldest and most spectacular of all the Christmas markets in Budapest. Browse over 100 stands offering unique Christmas-themed arts and crafts, enjoy the aroma of traditional Hungarian foods and keep yourself warm with a cup of mulled wine. Vienna is “Europe’s classiest capital,” claims Rick Steves, and one of the world’s great cultural treasures. Our tour showcases the ornate interior and landscaped gardens of Schönbrunn Palace and a panoramic drive along the Ringstrasse. The Christmas markets in Vienna (more than ten to choose from!) are an age-old tradition and the forerunners of the present-day events date back to the Middle Ages. Stunning Prague is truly a fairytale city with its spires and medieval castles and its preserved city center. Sprawling across the city’s largest plazas, the Christmas markets (at Old Town Square, Wenceslas Square and the Square of Peace) light up the city with a warm and festive ambiance which brings Prague’s stunning architecture to life. The brightly decorated stalls offer hand-made crafts, Bohemian crystal, wooden toys, scented candles, hand-made jewelry, traditional puppets and Christmas ornaments. Enjoy the charm and traditions of some of the most picturesque markets in Europe while we treat ourselves and those on our holiday list.

¿SABÍA USTED? (DID YOU KNOW?) In Barcelona, people live to eat! A typical day starts with something light, perhaps a café con leche with toast or biscuits. Around 11am, it’s time for a ‘real’ breakfast—a sandwich or croissant. Lunch occurs between 2 and 3pm and often consists of a starter, main course and dessert. Supper time is traditionally between 9 and 10pm yet, at times, may be even later. A piece of local advice: make the ‘wait’ between lunch and dinner easier by snacking at a tapas bar at 5:30pm and then again at 7:30pm. You can exercise when you return home!

Travelling the rolling hills on our way to bonnie Scotland, we’ll visit the ancient fortification of Hadrian’s Wall (built by the Romans in 122 A.D.). Edinburgh’s streets are crammed with both history and a vibrant cultural energy, from the UNESCO World Heritage site of the medieval old town to the abundance of shops, pubs and restaurants. As we make our way to Wales—rich in both history and legend—we cross England’s Lake District (“outlandishly beautiful,” says Lonely Planet) before tucking into our “royal” beds at Ruthin Castle Hotel. Add in Stratfordupon-Avon (Shakespeare’s birthplace), the Cotswolds (the most beautiful countryside), and Stonehenge (mystical and fascinating) and we’ll have a “right proper” picture of the lovely landscapes of Britain.

xperience a thousand years of history, a poignant cultural heritage and a vibrant present on this ten-night journey of discovery. Nearly destroyed during WWII, Warsaw is now rebuilt and revitalized; its “duplicated” Old Town is only 50 years old! A highlight of our locally guided tour is a visit to what remains of the Warsaw Ghetto. Krakow’s preserved medieval center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and our city tour features the Old Town and Wawel Castle, former residence of Polish kings. In Czestochowa, Poland’s spiritual heart, we’ll visit the Jasna Gora Monastery, home to the pilgrimage icon of the Black Madonna. Our visit to the former concentration camp at Auschwitz is a pilgrimage of another kind as we pause and remember. Ancient Wroclaw boasts Gothic, Baroque and Art Nouveau architecture and in its Old Town—built on several islands connected by more than 100 bridges—we’ll find a Synagogue as well as a Lutheran, Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox church. Torun—one of the “Seven Wonders of Poland”—is a UNESCO World Heritage site preserved in its medieval splendor and we’ll enjoy an evening walking tour. At 700-year-old Marienburg Fortress, the largest castle in the world, we’ll learn about the Knights of the Teutonic Order during our guided tour. In Maritime Gdansk, home to Lech Walesa, we’ll visit the famous shipyard, site of the Solidarity movement in 1980 that helped liberate Poland from Soviet rule. Amazing scenery, sacred and somber sights and lovely medieval towns—Poland discovered!

hy do people visit France? Hmmm. If you have to ask, then you haven’t been there yet. So, let’s fix that. This is a journey of a lifetime. We’ll start in Paris which might literally be indescribable, although countless artists and writers have given it their best! Our adventure starts with a Seine sunset dinner cruise and a coach tour that shows off the city’s breathtaking architecture. Next we’ll travel to the historic Normandy coast, home to WWII museums, monuments and cemeteries that serve as tribute to those who lived and died during the D-Day invasion in 1944. We’ll visit the Memorial Peace Museum, the Ranger Memorial and the Airborne Museum as well as the landing beaches. Then it’s on to the gorgeous Loire Valley, an enchanted land of vineyards, floral gardens and storybook Renaissance châteaux, and Provence: fields of lavender, charming medieval villages and a glorious regional cuisine. In Avignon we’ll stroll cobbled streets, indulge at a local café and explore the 14thcentury papal palace before we settle in for two nights on the alluring Côte d’Azur in Nice. Visits here include the walled medieval town of St. Paul de Vence, Grasse (famous for its perfumeries) and the famous Nice Flower Market. Our last excursion brings us to glittering Monaco and Monte Carlo. Now you’ll know why the world visits France!

here may not be enough adjectives in the English language to describe Ireland, but here are three that make it the perfect vacation destination: enchanting, haunting and friendly. From the pure unspoiled beauty of the landscape to dynamic cities; from the magic of myths and legends to thousands of years of history, Ireland will win you over! We’ll start in vibrant Dublin with a hearty dinner accompanied by traditional rousing Irish entertainment. We’ve included a tour of the “must-see” sights of St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Phoenix Park. Soak up the medieval atmosphere of Kilkenny en route to Waterford where we visit the new House of Waterford Crystal factory and take a leisurely paced walking tour. At Blarney Castle we’ll have a smooch with the famous Blarney Stone and tour beautiful Muckross House and Gardens in Killarney. Next is a tour of the Ring of Kerry, universally considered one of the world’s most beautiful coastal routes and enjoy unspoiled ocean scenery and picturesque villages as we come to “Ladies View” for a spectacular view of the Lake of Killarney. Nearly indescribable, the stunning 700-foot-high Cliffs of Moher with their views of the Atlantic and the Aran Islands are reason enough to journey to Ireland. We’ll conclude our journey with a jaunt into Irish Whiskey territory and a dram at an historic distillery before we indulge ourselves with an overnight stay on the grounds of Cabra Castle!

he legend and culture of the cowboy is a romantic part of America’s past, and this classic western adventure takes us to the big landscapes and iconic destinations that cowboys helped make famous. In Jackson, Wyoming— the crown jewel of the Northern Rockies—we discover a century-old, authentic cowboy-townturned-resort with Old West-style boardwalks fronting New West-style boutiques, galleries, restaurants and bars. Enjoy a relaxing float trip or exciting whitewater rafting adventure on the Snake River before winding through the towering peaks of Grand Teton National Park. Yellowstone National Park is incomparable, and as the first national park in the world it’s a true symbol of the west. Here we’ll watch for Old Faithful to erupt and hope to catch of glimpse of the free-ranging herds of buffalo. The astonishing scenery changes from mountains to prairies and back again as we travel through the incredible Bighorn Mountains and across the territory of the Great Sioux Nation. In the former gold rush town of Deadwood, home to true American originals Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane, we’ll have time to wander this once-rowdy western burg. This American experience concludes with two days in the Black Hills and Badlands of South Dakota—a landscape of steep canyons, spires and buttes—where we’ll visit the astonishing, still-in-progress and world’s largest sculpture, the Crazy Horse Memorial, and be treated to a sound and light show as we gaze upon an illuminated Mt.
