TRAVEL UPDATE When we planned our travel calendar for 2017, we had the benefit of feedback from a membership survey conducted earlier this year. As a result, your comments and suggestions are reflected in every one of the amazing trips you’ll find inside this issue of CLUBMail. While our fabulous Italy vacations remain at the top of everyone’s list, we discovered a growing interest in cruises. Not the big cruise ships that are floating shopping malls with 3,000 passengers! No, you asked for smaller, more intimate experiences like cruising the Danube or canal barging in Burgundy. So, we did our homework and interviewed all the river cruise companies, then we joined the cruise industry’s largest trade association and are now agents able to book our members on any cruise anywhere! To introduce our new expertise, we selected four perfect cruises that reflect your preferences of date, destination, five-star user reviews and affordability. Take a look, starting on Adriatic Yacht Cruise page 70, and see what we mean.
Solo Travelers are the Fastest Growing Segment of the Travel Industry In the “more good news department,” I’m happy to call your attention to our campaign to lower single supplements. A great many of our members travel as singles and love that we take particular care to meet their needs. Lowering costs is the next big step and we’ve started with several of our popular Italy vacations.
THEATER UPDATE The 2016/21017 Boston theater season is just beginning with an exciting mix of classics like West Side Story, The King and I, Cabaret and brilliant recent Broadway hits like Something Rotten! and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time! Want more? There are lots more and, as always, WE HAVE YOUR TICKETS at Show of the Month Club, your own private box office. Enjoy! TIM MONTGOMERY, PRESIDENT 4

THE MYSTICAL RUINS AND MISTY PEAKS of Machu Picchu are, for many, a once-in-a-lifetime destination. On this amazing South American adventure, we’ll walk in the footsteps of the ancient Inca as we experience the history of Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley and notable Incan sites in Cusco. “The Lost City of the Incas” is a well-preserved pre-Columbian Inca ruin located at 7,970’ on a mountain ridge. Forgotten for centuries by the outside world, although not by locals, it was brought back to international attention by archaeologist Hiram Bingham, who rediscovered it in 1911 and wrote a best-selling work about it. Since 1983 the site has been designated as a United Nations Educational World Heritage Site. One of the most popular places to visit in the world, it appears on many lists of the best places to see and is recognized as one of the seven Modern Wonders of the World. • Explore ancient ruins off the beaten path in the Sacred Valley with our expert guide • Meet local artisans at a G Adventures-supported Women’s Weaving Co-op and local village • Take in mountain views on the scenic train to Machu Picchu • Enjoy traditional treats and foods

DALMATIAN CUISINE Consisting of superb fish, shrimp, octopus, and oysters, along with increasingly renowned wines— compares favorably to Italian cooking, and borrows heavily from it: here risotto becomes rizot and prosciutto becomes the delectable prsut. But Dalmatian food is earthier and rougher than Italian, blending hints of Hungarian (paprika-laced goulash), Turkish (kebab-style raznjici, or meat skewers), and Slavic (sour dumplings). It’s also exceptionally affordable.
76
THE CRYSTAL-CLEAR WATERS OF CROATIA’S ADRIATIC SEA are graced with more than a thousand gem-like islands adorned with fragrant pine groves, flowers and herbs. Aboard our motor yacht, we’ll explore these islands, visit historic walled cities, picturesque towns and harbors lined with traditional bars and cafés. Cruising down the Dalmatian Coast, regarded as one of the most beautiful in the world, we’ll see dramatic cliffs, sheltered coves, sandy beaches and small, unspoiled bays where we’ll have the chance to swim in the clear, calm waters. Breakfasts and lunches are freshly prepared daily by our on-board chef. Come evening we’re free to step ashore and discover the rich culture and history and dine at local restaurants to enjoy traditional cuisine.
M/S PRESTIGE The M/S Prestige is a 160-foot-long luxury vessel with state-of-the-art equipment and amenities and accommodates up to 38 guests. The public areas are fully air-conditioned including a spacious restaurant located on the Upper Deck with a bar and LCD TV and large sun deck ideal for soaking up the sun and enjoying the spectacular scenery. The sun deck has enough sun-beds and chairs to accommodate all passengers with plenty of shaded areas. The modern stylish cabins are sound-proof and air-conditioned and are situated on the main and lower decks. The relaxed and slowed pace of life on-board provides a perfect platform to explore the stunning coast and gem-like islands of Croatia and Dalmatia.

PORTS OF CALL SPLIT: With its seafront cafés and ancient alleyways, shouting stallholders and travellers on the move, bustling, exuberant Split is one of the Mediterranean’s most compelling cities. BRAČ: The old town of Bol is an attractive place, with small stone houses and winding streets dotted with pink and purple geraniums. HVAR: Endowed with natural beauty: a slim, purplegrey slice of land punctured by jagged inlets and pebbly coves, with lavender plantations, vineyards and half-abandoned stone villages clinging to its steep central ridge. The island’s capital, Hvar Town, is one of the Adriatic’s best-preserved historic towns.

KORČULA: Cloaked in vineyards, olives and Aleppo pines, Korčula is one of the greenest of the Adriatic islands. VIS: A compact hump rearing dramatically out of the sea, Vis is situated farther offshore than any of Croatia’s other inhabited Adriatic islands, with breathtaking bays, fantastic food and wine and two great-looking small towns – Vis Town and Komiža. MLJET: The green island of Mljet is one of the most beautiful on the entire coast; the most visited part of the island is the west, where untouched Mediterranean forest and two saltwater lakes provide the focus of the Mljet National Park. DUBROVNIK: A walled, sea-battered city lying at the foot of a grizzled mountain, Dubrovnik is Croatia’s most popular tourist destination, and it’s not difficult to see why. An essentially medieval town reshaped by Baroque planners after a disastrous earthquake of 1667, Dubrovnik’s historic core seems to have been suspended in time ever since. Set-piece churches and public buildings blend seamlessly with the green-shuttered stone houses, forming a perfect ensemble relatively untouched by the twenty-first century.

RIVER CRUISING IS A FABULOUS WAY TO TRAVEL, but if you would like to try an even more intimate and relaxed experience, then “barging” in Burgundy is it! We’ve partnered with National Geographic to take you on a brand-new river cruising adventure that opens up one of the world’s greatest places via an inventive itinerary, down fabled waterways, on a small boat designed for and limited to only 22 passengers! Tailor-made for pleasure cruising, the network of rivers and centuriesold canals that crisscross Burgundy, France’s fabled wineproducing département, are simply the best way to explore central France. Life unfolds at a different pace in this pastoral part of the world, and nowhere is that more obvious than from the deck of a piloted river barge (or peniche) that doubles as your floating hotel—and there may be no better way to explore the countryside villages than floating down the Saône River. Drift from one stunning landscape to another, stopping to roam the region’s famous vineyards, ride bikes through its vast forests and indulge in its unforgettable flavors. As the capital of Burgundy’s wine country, Beaune is practically a holy site for oenophiles. Step off your canal boat and take a stroll through this amazingly well-preserved medieval city to investigate its legions of underground wine cellars, gorgeous laneways, and centuries of Roman and Gallic history. At the end of your week, you’ll head for Paris and spend two days rounding-out a unique perspective of France that you’ll treasure for a lifetime. You’re going to love this experience!
