A FUN SUMMER TRADITION O
ne of the joys of summer in New England, right up there with cookouts and fireworks, is Summer Theater! It all started about 100 years ago, with many of the best venues established right here in our six-state region. Known as “Summer Stock” or “The Straw Hat Circuit,” brilliant companies began performing in theaters, tents and sheds from Maine to Cape Cod and Vermont to Connecticut. Today the doors are still open with Broadway-caliber productions at the Cape Playhouse, the North Shore Music Theatre, The Goodspeed Opera House, the Ogunquit Playhouse and many more. So, in recognition of this great summer tradition, and knowing a good thing when we see it, we’ve arranged high-season, primetime, hard-to-get, theater getaways to six of the best of the best! Take your pick from The Cape Playhouse in historic Dennis; the Maine State Music Theatre on the Bowdoin College campus in Brunswick, Maine; The Ogunquit Playhouse in the beautiful seaside town of Ogunquit, Maine; The Goodspeed Opera House, considered the home of the American musical, in East Haddam, Connecticut; the charming Theatre by the Sea in Rhode Island; and the impressive North Shore Music Theatre in Beverly, Massachusetts. All are outstanding and all in famously popular summer resort areas. You couldn’t ask for a more enjoyable weekend getaway!
COMING SOON! Tickets for the 2014–2015 Boston theater season will be available from the Club this summer. Watch for an e-mail announcement offering all the new shows: Disney’s The Lion King, Mamma Mia!, Motown, Dirty Dancing, Newsies and Kinky Boots!
THE WORLD BECKONS Inside this issue of CLUBMail is the stuff of daydreams! Sicily, the Galapagos Islands, Ireland, the Amalfi Coast, Thailand, Hawaii—each of these magical and evocative names conjure thoughts of adventure, exploration and discovery. And, what turns these daydreams into reality is the unbelievably affordable price! That’s what membership in The Travel Club is all about—spending less, traveling more! What are you waiting for? Get out there and see something! Happy travels,
Tim Montgomery, President

Rimini, Ravenna, Bologna, Padua and San Marino (and Venice!)

E
milia Romagna is a kaleidoscope of wonders from the shores of the Adriatic Riviera to the castles of the countryside. Our accommodations for four nights will be in the resort of Rimini at the Villa Adriatica located on the seaside promenade. The elegant Liberty-style villa—dating back to 1880—offers a pool and Jacuzzi, garden, bar and restaurant. We’ll begin in Bologna, located on the ancient Roman road Via Emilia, and visit its perfectly preserved medieval center during a morning tour and an afternoon on our own. This handsome, red-bricked city is home to Europe’s oldest university and has a lively atmosphere. Our excursion to Ravenna highlights the stunning 5th–6th century Byzantine mosaics adorning the walls of its churches and monuments. A pinnacle of civilization in Europe’s Dark Ages, Ravenna now boasts eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Leaving Italy, we’ll travel (30 minutes) to the world’s smallest sovereign state, The Republic of San Marino—24 square miles completely surrounded by Italy; boasting 1,700 years of history; its main square named “Liberty”; and three impressive fortresses dominating the landscape. Be sure to purchase a San Marino postage stamp and have your passport stamped—for a small fee! Departing Rimini, we’ll visit Renaissanceera Ferrara, whose historic center has earned it UNESCO status, before arriving in Padua, a star in both Roman and medieval times. We’ll marvel at the colonnaded old town, and there will be plenty of time for you to visit Giotto’s remarkable frescoes at the Scrovegni Chapel or the Basilica of Saint Anthony. Our charming accommodations for three nights will be in the historic center of Padua at the Albergo Verdi, close to the market squares. The icing on the cake will be a day in Venice!

his week-long holiday begins with four days exploring the Borghi, Tuscany’s famed medieval villages, before heading to the coastal resort of Sorrento—the gateway to the Amalfi Coast. The “road less traveled” leads us off the beaten path to these small Tuscan communities which are, for the most part, insulated from tourists. We’ll stay in Anghiari, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. Outside its 12th and 13th century fortified walls, the countryside seems untouched by modernity. Inside, you’ll be charmed by small squares, artisan shops, towers and churches. Enjoy visits to San Sepolcro and ancient Monterchi (the Mount of Hercules), the Hermitage of Montecasale and the famous cathedral in Orvieto. Stops at a textile factory and an ancient oil press and pasta factory complete our Tuscan exploration. Lovely and relaxed, Sorrento perches on a cliff ’s ledge above the Mediterranean, carries the aroma of lemon groves, has a lively main shopping street and an unspoiled old quarter. Days trips along La Costiera Amalfitana to Amalfi and Ravello and an excursion to the Isle of Capri will overwhelm you with magical vistas.

Palermo, Agrigento and Taormina

TAORMINA
is dramatic—in every sense of the S icily word. Lying only 80 miles from the coast
of North Africa, Sicily has seen invaders— Greeks, Romans, Arabs, French and many more—all attracted to its beauty, fertility and magic. That doesn’t sound all that dramatic, you say? Try this: Sicily is both blessed by the spectacular, turquoise Mediterranean Sea and cursed by volcanoes and earthquakes. Not enough? Quintessentially Italian yet uniquely Sicilian, the island has seen plagues, family vendettas, poverty and prosperity. It has always attracted poets, painters and lovers of beauty. It has mountains and beaches and vineyards; its cities and towns are both ancient and modern. In short—it’s dramatic! Join us this October as we explore Sicily from the storied streets of Palermo to the most famous of all Italian resort towns—Taormina. In between, we’ll visit Marsala and sip wine; spend a day marveling at the Greek temples in Agrigento; wander the streets of Catania; and, finally, discover the charms of Taormina, to this day, a hot spot for the rich and famous. We’ll be treated to an excursion to Mount Etna and have plenty of time to explore on our own. Now that’s dramatic!

¿SABÍA USTED? (DID YOU KNOW?) In Barcelona, people live to eat! A typical day starts with something light, perhaps a café con leche with toast or biscuits. Around 11am, it’s time for a ‘real’ breakfast—a sandwich or croissant. Lunch occurs between 2 and 3pm and often consists of a starter, main course and dessert. Supper time is traditionally between 9 and 10pm yet, at times, may be even later. A piece of local advice: make the ‘wait’ between lunch and dinner easier by snacking at a tapas bar at 5:30pm and then again at 7:30pm. You can exercise when you return home!

hroughout history, pilgrims have journeyed to sacred places searching for solace, healing and enlightenment. On this, The Club’s first “spiritual journey,” we’ll follow in their footsteps. Our week begins in Lourdes, the most-visited shrine in France, where, in 1858, The Virgin Mary appeared to St. Bernadette and spoke “I am the Immaculate Conception.” We’ll celebrate Mass, take a special walking tour, and visit the baths plus participate in the Procession of the Blessed Sacrament, the Blessing of the Sick and the Torchlight Procession. The next day, we’re free to visit the sacred Grotto. Then we’re off to Paris! Our visit begins with Mass at the Shrine of the Miraculous Medal where, in 1830, the Virgin Mary appeared to St. Catherine Laboure. We may view her incorrupt body later in the day. A Paris sightseeing tour is included. Next day, we’ll visit the exquisite Palace at Versailles, as well as the magnificent 13th-century cathedral in Chartres. In Lisieux, we’ll tour the home of St. Therese, visit the Basilica built in her honor, and see the ancient Cathedral of St. Peter. Our journey concludes through the picturesque Loire Valley to Nevers. At the Convent of St. Gildard we’ll see St. Bernadette’s incorrupt body in repose, preserved since her death in 1879 in a crystal coffin. We have included the opportunity to participate in Holy Mass daily. 42

his Travel Club classic remains one of the best values in travel today! For these trips we’ve chosen accommodations in the heart of Montparnasse, located along the northern edge of the 14th arrondissement, known for its lively nightlife, much of which is based around historic brasseries like La Coupole, La Rotonde and Le Select. Once a warren of artists’ studios and swinging cafés, this neighborhood takes you back to the café society of the early 20th century— imagine having a drink with Picasso, Modigliani, Hemingway, Man Ray, or Trotsky. Don’t miss the rooftop terrace of Tour Montparnasse for the best panoramic view of the city and treat yourself to a cocktail at Le Bar Américain on the 56th floor. The Hotel Villa Modigliani offers a secluded inner courtyard and garden, proximity to the Jardin du Luxembourg and Saint Germain des Prés, and is also convenient to the Paris Metro. This neighborhood is perfect for strolling, dining, and shopping in the Galeries Lafayette Montparnasse. You may want to visit Rue d’Odessa for its countless pancake houses (a specialty from France’s Brittany region) and the pedestrianized Rue Daguerre.

id we say “Bucket List?” This trip is a must! Breathtaking landscapes, delicious cuisine, historical sites, fabulous wine, world-famous shopping—France delights the senses. Our travel fantasies come to life in the uber-exclusive south of France among the sun-drenched resorts of the Riviera. Greek Islands holiday is bound to be on your wish list. And why not? White-washed, cliff-hugging villages, enchanting seascapes and sunsets, black sand beaches, ancient (really ancient) ruins—and, of course, the Mediterranean cuisine—all add up to the trip of a lifetime. This Grecian primer begins and ends in Athens—“with the most glorious history in the world”—boasting an incomparable collection of monuments, eclectic markets and lively streets. A short flight brings us to the isle of Crete, where Greek civilization began, and an exploration of the crumbling ruins of the royal complex at Knossos. The largest of the Greek islands, Crete is flush with fantastic beaches—and turquoise lagoons! Next, via ferry, we’re off to one of the ten best islands in Europe— Santorini—whose scenery and charm are off the charts. his new eight-night holiday takes us beyond the traditional beach-week Florida vacation and the whirlwind of activities at Disney and Epcot. We’ll visit the “southernmost point” of Key West and the oldest city in the country, St. Augustine; enjoy nightlife in Little Havana and wildlife in the Everglades; spend a day on the beach in Naples and a day in space at the Kennedy Space Center; and have a chance to watch a sunrise over the Atlantic and a sunset over the Gulf of Mexico. The fun starts with dinner in Little Havana (Miami) and a tour including trendy South Beach and chic Star Island. From our accommodations in relaxing Key Largo, we’ll enjoy a full-day excursion to funky, laid-back Key West—home to beautiful architecture, the descendants of Hemingway’s six-toed cats and a sunken treasure museum. We’ll travel through the Everglades, join an optional swamp tour, stroll Naples’ famed 5th Avenue before heading to Cocoa Beach and Florida’s Space Coast—home of NASA’s launch headquarters and the Kennedy Space Center. Charming St. Augustine, with four centuries of history, rounds out our Florida exploration!

M
any of us travel to revel in other cultures—to eat and drink like the locals in Thailand, to hear a waltz in Vienna or take in an opera in Milan. Well, how about experiencing some homegrown local culture right here in America’s south—the birthplace of American music! This week-long tour showcases three American cities known as musical Meccas for fans of jazz, blues and country music. New Orleans indisputably wears the jazz crown and is home to such landmarks as Jackson Square and the unique French Quarter—where we’ll take in a live jazz revue and learn to cook “N’awlins” style. In Memphis, we’ll feast on world-famous Beale Street and listen as local musicians rhapsodize about Memphis’ blues, soul and rock ’n’ roll history, before touring Graceland, the 14-acre estate of the late King, Elvis Presley. Finally, we’ll go a little bit country in Nashville where we take our seats at the legendary Grand Ole Opry, tour historic RCA Studio B and visit the Country Music Hall of Fame. The sounds of the south have become part of our own cultural heritage as surely as Southern hospitality, sweet tea, fried chicken and “Gone With the Wind.”
