SPRING AT LAST! A

nd, with spring comes that undeniable urge to travel. This issue  of CLUBMail has many ways to satisfy that desire. There are fun, new Drive Yourself Getaways, special holiday weekends (as crazy as that sounds, Thanksgiving reservations are best made early on these trips), fascinating and fully-escorted European vacations and an amazing selection of independent trips with all the security, comforts and convenience of group travel. There are also several brand new, exclusively arranged Italy vacations that we know you’ll love. One is The Club’s annual President’s Trip, hosted by yours truly. Please consider traveling with me as we discover some of the beautiful and historic seaside resorts that date back to the Roman Empire (Caesar may have had a beach chair!). The places are legendary and on this leisurely exploration, we’ll mix the historic with the gastronomic along the way. This trip promises to be restorative as well as educational. And if you have photographs from a recent SOMC trip, send them in! You may see them online or in the next issue of CLUBMail!

The season doesn’t miss a beat—from Cirque du Soleil to the Boston Pops to powerhouse seasons at North Shore Music Theatre and SpeakEasy Stage—you’re going to be quite busy. (And really popular with your friends.) Your seats are waiting for you! Have a question about a show? Need to plan a special occasion? Call us. ometimes driving is the only way to really see our beautiful country and this weeklong vacation is the perfect example. Our destination is “suspended in time” Mackinac Island—voted one of the Top 10 Islands in the World by Condé Nast Traveler. Before we arrive in Michigan’s enchanting “Crown Jewel” we’ll visit one of America’s greatest historic destinations: 300 years of American life at Greenfield Village and the Henry Ford Museum, with 200 acres of “invention, inspiration and innovation.” In Mackinaw we’ll explore Mackinaw Crossings before our short ferry ride to Mackinac Island and waterfront accommodations at the gracious Island House. ou’re going to love this experience! Discover the musical culture and rich historic tapestry of America’s iconic music meccas, Memphis and Nashville, and see where Blues and Rock & Roll began! In Memphis we’ll stroll along famous Beale Street—a National Historic Landmark lined with bars, restaurants, shops and live music venues. Memphis also means Elvis—her most famous son—and Graceland. We’ll enjoy a morning tour to learn about this musical heritage that ends with a visit to Elvis’ palatial estate—filled with the largest collection of gold records in the world as well as his elaborate stage costumes and jewelry—and his burial site in the Meditation Garden. During your free time this afternoon you might visit the impressive Stax Museum of American Soul Music, the Memphis Rock ‘n Soul Museum (a satellite of the Smithsonian), the Gibson Guitar Factory or the National Civil Rights Museum. You’ll have a chance to get acquainted with Memphis’ other king: legendary Bar-b-que at a slew of famous BBQ joints such as Charlie Vergos’ Rendezvous, Tops Bar-B-Q, Central BBQ and Neely’s Bar-B-Que. Nashville, where country music was born, has become the new darling of the South; it was one of the most popular international travel destinations of 2014 and ranked #15 on The New York Times list of 52 Places to Go in 2014. We’ll hit the highlights as we visit famous Music Row, Historic RCA Studio B, the Parthenon and the one-of-a-kind Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. Nashville’s musical legacy is best preserved at the Grand Ole Opry and we have reserved seats for an evening performance before a day of touring that starts in Lynchburg at the Jack Daniel’s Distillery and ends with dinner and entertainment at the famed Wildhorse Saloon.

Do you love to travel but don’t always have a companion who wants to go to the same place you do? Are you a little worried about traveling on your own, not to mention planning a trip by yourself? More and more travelers are choosing to see the world as singles—able to go where they want, see what they want and not have to worry about someone else’s preferences! Sound like you? On the following pages (39–47) you’ll find an assortment of “Independent City Stays.” These 3-, 5- or 6-night programs are perfect for the solo traveler. This is independent travel for people who love to explore on their own, but want all the convenience, security and economy of group travel. These programs include escorted round-trip airport-to-hotel transfers, sometimes a welcome beverage on arrival and usually an included tour. We provide you with the emergency contact number of your program host/hostess and our staff includes lots of sightseeing information in your final document package—in case you’re just not sure what to see first! You might find The Club’s exclusive escorted tours (pages 48–57) even more appealing. These week-long vacations are accompanied by a local Tour Manager and nearly every tour we operate has three or four persons traveling by themselves. And, we have some of the lowest single supplements in travel today, very often less than $300. So, if you’ve been hesitant about traveling solo, don’t be—”we’ve got your back,” as they say!

Did you know that special pricing may be available for groups? Do you love to travel with family and friends? Do your co-workers look to you when you’re talking vacation plans? Are you part of a social group looking for a great destination? If so, you are a group leader and we want to talk to you! ¿SABÍA USTED? (DID YOU KNOW?) In Barcelona, people live to eat! A typical day starts with something light, perhaps a café con leche with toast or biscuits. Around 11am, it’s time for a ‘real’ breakfast—a sandwich or croissant. Lunch occurs between 2 and 3pm and often consists of a starter, main course and dessert. Supper time is traditionally between 9 and 10pm yet, at times, may be even later. A piece of local advice: make the ‘wait’ between lunch and dinner easier by snacking at a tapas bar at 5:30pm and then again at 7:30pm. You can exercise when you return home!

ublin is the city that gave us James Joyce and Oscar Wilde, Guinness and U2. It’s where the locals are happy to see you and all seem to have a relative in Boston! Alive with hustle and bustle and justifiably proud of its reputation for “craic,” a general good-time atmosphere—Dublin is vibrant. Famous for its pubs with their traditional entertainment and impromptu sing-alongs, Dublin can also boast of its trendy shops, chic restaurants and art galleries. Homebase for this delightful getaway is our four-star boutique hotel centrally located on lovely Merrion Square. Our visit includes a half-day panoramic coach tour of Dublin and a full-day excursion north for a visit to Belfast and admission to the famous Titanic Museum Belfast. During leisure time we may want to visit nearby Trinity College to view the amazing Book of Kells (a beautifully illustrated manuscript written around 800 A.D.) and St. Patrick’s Cathedral. We’ll have time to stroll the lovely Georgian streets of Merrion Square or visit the Guinness Storehouse. Dublin is a treasure—a cosmopolitan capital with its traditional culture brilliantly preserved.

isit two of the world’s most extraordinary cities on this classic Italian vacation. One of the cultural capitals of the world, Florence is magnetic and romantic and, in many ways, hardly changed since the Renaissance—magnificent art and stunning architecture surround you. But, the magic of Florence doesn’t stop there. Wander its narrow streets and discover amazing markets (San Lorenzo), distinctive neighborhoods (the Oltrarno) and green spaces (Boboli Gardens) that are every bit as glorious as the David and the Duomo. We’ll enjoy an included guided walking tour of the historic center as well as a visit to the Uffizi Gallery. After three nights in Florence, we’ll head south to Rome, stopping en route for a walking tour of beautiful Siena, whose medieval piazza is shaped like a scallop shell. “A city that counted,” Lonely Planet says of Rome— during its long history as the capital of the Roman empire and then as the seat of papal power, Rome has always been center stage. Enjoy three nights in this indescribable city, get acquainted on a panoramic coach tour and a skip-the-line Vatican tour. Rome today is a thrilling place to visit: antiquity is everywhere (Colosseum and Forum), as are take-yourbreath-away sights like St. Peter’s Square and Basilica and the Sistine Chapel. And, yet, you may discover that the chief allure of Rome is the lifestyle, the “dolce vita” you experience at an outdoor café table in an ancient piazza, tossing a coin into a likely fountain (there are dozens) or watching the spectacular sunset from the Pincio Gardens.

During our visit we’ll also discover that Parma is an elegant city with a small historic district and a 12th-century Baptistery that is considered one of Italy’s most interesting buildings. Enjoy a city tour and excursion to Castello di Fotanellato—a moated fortress/residence from the Middle Ages. We start with four nights in seaside Santa Margherita Ligure—a beautiful old resort town with the palm trees, cafés and marina that a perfect Riviera location should have. Just up the coast lies Genoa and one of the world’s best-kept travel secrets—Genoa is awesome! This noisy, colorful Mediterranean port is a jumble of ancient lanes and alleyways, massive palaces, medieval walls and bell towers, with a center consecrated as a UNESCO site and a refurbished Antico Porto set off by lively palm-lined promenades. Our full-day excursion includes a five-hour urban walk—with plenty of stops and free time for lunch. The following day we’ll set off on a three-hour hike and make our way on a paved path with stone steps to the glorious harbor town of Portofino. (Don’t worry, we’ll have boat or coach transportation back to the hotel!) Over the next two days we’ll hike up an ancient mule track for a breathtaking view of Liguria and the Cote d’Azur, find the watch tower on the Punta Manara promontory, have time for an impromptu picnic lunch and a cooking class and free time in the pretty seaside town of Sestri Levante. ENCHANTING UMBRIA Food, Wine and Landscapes

Saturday, May 7–Sunday, May 15, 2016

P

icture a lush landscape of green rolling hills, vineyards and olive groves in every direction, and ancient hill towns clinging to the pinnacles, each one offering a rich cultural heritage that began before the Romans, and you have Umbria, the green heart of Italy. We’ll stay in a renovated 17thcentury palazzo—complete with a hanging garden and hall of frescoes—in Spello, one of Umbria’s most picturesque towns, with rose-colored stone walls, crumbling terracotta roof tiles, stone pathways, and weathered wooden doors. We’ll visit the ancient city of Orvieto and its magnificent Gothic Duomo, and then settle down for a tasting of the famous wines of Orvieto, before a stop in Todi, whose perfect medieval piazza looks like (and sometimes, is) a movie set. The following day we visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Assisi, where a guided tour introduces us to the Basilica and other sacred memorials in the birthplace of St. Francis, before we enjoy lunch at a local trattoria. Next is Spoleto. Shelley called it “the most romantic city I ever saw” and it’s just that today, with colorful street scenes, stone lanes and monuments from its thousand year history. Then it’s off to visit the famed Lungarotti Winery in Torgiano for a wine tasting and light lunch before visits to Deruta (famous for ceramics) and Gubbio, the oldest village in Umbria. Our vacation ends with a visit to fascinating Montefalco and the Arnaldo Caprai Winery for a tasting and some local delicacies, and Bevagna, an intimate and charming walled village. What a delicious holiday!

ave you heard of the Cilento Coast? Come with The Travel Club and see what we’ve discovered! South of the Amalfi Coast is a treasure trove, bustling traditional towns and landscapes that are both authentic and enchanting. This dramatic coastline of rocky coves, wild flowers, crystal-clear water and plunging cliffs is off the typical tourist radar—the Italians have long kept it to themselves. We’ll spend three nights in the historic center of Santa Maria Di Castellabate—a former fishing village of pastel-colored houses and ancient palazzi, lively restaurants and intriguing shops. Enjoy excursions to Paestum—a fascinating archaeological find and the site of some of the best-preserved Greek temples on the Mediterranean—and Acciaroli—a jewel of the Cilento coast with traditional houses, narrow cobbled alleys and a harborside promenade dotted with cafés and said to be a favorite of Hemingway’s during his Italian travels. Sorrento will be our base for the next four nights and we’ll stop en route in Ravello—“the best view on the Amalfi Coast,” says Forbes—for a tour of this cliff-top village and lunch. The following day we’ll cruise over to Ischia Island, a wonder of lush greenery, peaceful seaside towns and postcard panoramas, and enjoy a guided tour that includes the La Mortella Botanical Gardens and the Aragonese Castle; followed by a visit to Pietratorcia Winery—Ischia’s wine heritage dates back to 700 B.C. And, finally, we’ll enjoy a full-day excursion to Naples with a visit to the famous Archaeological Museum and a traditional pizza lunch.

hroughout history, pilgrims have journeyed to sacred places searching for solace, healing and enlightenment. On this spiritual program we’ll follow in their footsteps. Our travels begin in Paris with guided sightseeing highlighted by the Baroque masterpiece of Saint-Sulpice Church—home to the Chapelle de la Madone and a Pigalle statue of the Virgin. Continue to Lourdes, the most-visited shrine in France, where, in 1858, The Virgin Mary appeared to St. Bernadette and spoke “I am the Immaculate Conception.” We’ll visit the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, the Rosary Basilica and healing site of the Grotto of Massabielle. Crossing the Pyrenees mountains into Spain, we travel to the seaside city of San Sebastian—which frequently tops lists of the world’s best places to eat; and Burgos for a visit to the famous Gothic cathedral with its 15 chapels, rose window and tomb of the Spanish hero El Cid. A highlight of our tour awaits in Santiago de Compostela as we walk the last mile of the Way of St. James—a large network of ancient pilgrim routes stretching across Europe and coming together at the tomb of St. James (Santiago in Spanish). “Legend has it that James preached in Spain before being martyred in Jerusalem in 44 AD and his body was brought back to Spain after his death. The tomb of St. James in Santiago de Compostela has been a pilgrimage site for over 1,000 years.”—Sacred Destinations. The Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima is one of most famous Marian shrines in the world. Some four million people visit each year, drawn by apparitions of the Virgin Mary reported by three local shepherd children in 1917. We’ll visit the basilica and explore its grotto and learn of the three Secrets of Fatima. Our journey ends in Lisbon with a landmarks tour of the Portuguese capital including Ajuda National Palace, Belem Tower, Jeronimos Monastery and the ancient Alfama district.

oth serene and exotic, the magical Galapagos Islands are on nearly everyone’s “must-visit” list. After arrival in Ecuador, we’ll spend a full day touring the town of Quito, complete with a visit to the Equatorial Line Monument (apply sunscreen!) where we’ll stand with one foot in both the northern and southern hemispheres. After a short flight to Baltra, we board our cruise ship Galapagos Legend, and begin our exploration with a cruise to Black Turtle Cove. Island hop from Santiago Island (after a wet landing we explore extensive lava flows and have a chance to swim or snorkel in Sullivan Bay) to the dark red sand beaches of Rabida Island. We’ll also spend the day on Isabela Island—a single land mass made from six ancient volcanoes—and wiggle our toes in the black sands around Urbina Bay, choose to either snorkel with the local sea turtles or visit the giant tortoises, and have a chance to see a blue-footed booby on a walking tour near Tagus Cove. On the last day of our cruise we’ll visit Punta Espinosa on Isla Fernandina whose dramatic lava f lows are home to marine iguanas and Vicente Roca Point and the Bolivar Channel where we might see dolphins and whales. After our return to Quito we may choose to join an excursion to the volcanic landscapes of Cotopaxi National Park before our overnight f light back to Boston. (We also have the fantastic opportunity to reserve the six-night extension to Peru where we’ll visit Cuzco, Lima, Incan ruins and the lost city of Machu Picchu.)

“I never knew of a morning in Africa when I woke up that I was not happy.” —Ernest Hemingway

I

n 2013, Tanzania was voted best safari country in Africa in a poll of travelers, experts and guide book authors. This authentic African wilderness of unfenced parks, abundant wildlife, endless plains and landscapes dotted with enormous baobab trees and the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti, provides an incomparable safari experience. Tanzania is the last place on earth where wildlife exists in such abundance. Following our arrival night in Arusha we’ll head into Tarangire National Park with (reportedly) the largest concentration of elephant in the world. Lake Manyara is a jewel whose setting was praised by Hemingway as “the loveliest I had seen in Africa” and with wildlife that can be observed at a much closer range than in other parks. “Timeless” is how the Serengeti is often described—a vast treeless plain with millions of animals searching for fresh grasslands—and in the Maasai dialect it means “the place where the land moves on forever.” Between breathtaking vistas and a permanent water supply that supports an unparalleled concentration of wildlife, Ngorongoro Crater is one of Africa’s premier attractions and sits in close proximity to Olduvai Gorge, the “Cradle of Mankind,” where pre-human fossil remains were discovered. In addition to morning, afternoon and evening game drives we’ll visit a project that assists disabled community members, take a guided walk through the savanna, visit a Maasai village and view ancient cave art.

INCLUDES:

• Round-trip regularly scheduled flights from Boston to Kilimanjaro Airport, via a connecting city • Nine nights’ three- and four-star accommodations • Twenty-seven meals: nine breakfasts, eight lunches, ten dinners • Eight game drives • Six “Connect & Conserve” highlights • 4×4 land cruise safari vehicle • Round-trip airport/hotel transfers • Sightseeing and touring • Services of multilingual Driver/Guide

HIGHLIGHTS:

Tarangire National Park: one of the most diverse parks in Tanzania with scattered acacia woodland, baobab and palm trees, plains, swamps and rivers; abundance of big game including lion, elephant and buffalo Lake Manyara National Park: diverse habitats, from its Rift Valley soda lake to dense woodlands and steep mountainsides; famous for its unusual tree-climbing lions and the vast elephant herds Serengeti National Park: virtually every game species in Africa can be found here, including the Big 5; Africa’s most famous park; the endless grassy plains are the richest grazing grounds on the continent, and therefore home to the largest herds and the highest concentrations of predators on the planet Ngorongoro Crater: once a gigantic volcano, it is the largest intact caldera in the world; one of the most beautiful wildlife havens on earth OPTIONAL: ZANZIBAR 3n post-tour extension; Stone Town and East Coast beaches $1,099 pp/ do land and air.

This week-long tour showcases three American cities known as musical Meccas for fans of jazz, blues and country music. New Orleans indisputably wears the jazz crown and is home to such landmarks as Jackson Square and the unique French Quarter— where we’ll learn to cook “N’awlins” style and take a bayou swamp cruise. In Memphis, we’ll feast on famous barbecue and listen as local musicians rhapsodize about Memphis’ blues, soul and rock ’n’ roll history, before touring Graceland, the 14-acre estate of the late King, Elvis Presley. Finally, we’ll go a little bit country in Nashville where we take our seats at the legendary Grand Ole Opry, tour historic RCA Studio B and visit the Country Music Hall of Fame. The sounds of the south have become part of our own cultural heritage as surely as Southern hospitality, sweet tea, fried chicken and “Gone With the Wind.”
