FROM THE GENERAL & ARTISTIC DIRECTOR “Versank ich jetzt in wunderbares Träumen? Was ich erblicke ist’s ein Wahn?” (Did I now descend into wondrous dreams? Is the vision that I see madness?”) —Senta, Act II Senta/Dutchman Duet Dear Patrons, This production marks the first Wagner opera at BLO in more than 20 years, and his return is due in no small part to you, our patrons. Your dedication and generosity have enabled us to mount this final new production of the season. For that, and so much more, I thank you! In honor of the composer’s bicentennial year, BLO presents the U.S. premiere of the 1841 critical edition of The Flying Dutchman. Wagner composed the original version for Paris, where he saw an opportunity for a through-composed stage work, but it was never performed in his lifetime. This first version is set in a Scottish fishing village. Daland is Donald, and Erik is Georg. By 1843, Wagner had changed the location to Norway for the opera’s premiere performance in Dresden, at this time divided into three acts. He continued with further revisions, but he never actually finished a final, definitive vocal score. The original 1841 edition includes several intriguing musical differences from the later versions resulting in a lighter sound and a different balance, giving you an idea of what Wagner initially envisioned. Stage Director Michael Cavanagh reexamines this classic, dark tale. He focuses our attention on Donald’s daughter, Senta. The setting could be anywhere, as the story unfolds from her tormented viewpoint. She is drawn to the legend of a Dutch sea captain who seeks to be delivered from his curse through the selfless love of a woman. We witness the evolution of a hurt, lonely girl to a desperate young woman, herself yearning to be delivered from her tortured existence. We have assembled a stellar cast for you! Alfred Walker returns to BLO to sing the title role. Gregory Frank, Allison Oakes, and Chad Shelton make their BLO debuts, and we also welcome back Ann McMahon Quintero as well as BLO Emerging Artist, Alan Schneider. The Flying Dutchman concludes our season, which started with Madama Butterfly, and continued with the U.S. premiere of Clemency, and Così Fan Tutte. I am pleased that this season has enjoyed critical success and record sales. I invite you to become a subscriber and join the circle of our close friends, or renew your subscriptions for another popular season with all new productions of The Magic Flute, Lizzie Borden, Rigoletto and I Puritani, featuring national and international casts. Only subscribers can ensure the best seats now at the lowest price, and enjoy many other special privileges. Your support also allows us to produce educational programs and free community events, including our upcoming Open House at the Shubert Theatre on Saturday, May 4, and events with cultural partners such as the Boston Public Library and Boston Landmarks Orchestra. Pre-performance lectures, student access to Final Dress Rehearsals, workshops for educators and young people, and programs presented with the MFA and Wheelock Family Theatre are among our many educational programs—creating opportunities to introduce and inspire opera-goers in our community.

BOSTON LYRIC OPERA BOARD We are in for a rare treat as Boston Lyric Opera produces its first Wagner after a 23-year absence. What a wonderful Company we support that performs the full scope of opera—this year from the lush romanticism of verismo Madama Butterfly to the 18th-century drama giocoso, Così Fan Tutte, to the earliest of Wagner’s masterpieces, The Flying Dutchman. While with the 21st-century Clemency, our Opera Annex production, we welcomed a major U.S. premiere of BLO’s first, international co-commission. This century-spanning art form, exploring the themes of love and loss, gender inequality, the conquered and the conquering, loss and discovery, resonates in our lives, allowing us each to explore the emotional and intellectual growth and changes that individuals and societies go through in both a cognitive and a subliminal way. We will leave the theatre today with the flame of human experience kindled. Steven P. Akin Chairman, Board of Directors CHAIR

SYNOPSIS Senta lives in unbearable conflict, caught between the demands of her father the sea-captain Donald, the expectations of her fiancé the huntsman George, and hostility from the fishing community around her. She has become obsessed with the legend of the Flying Dutchman. It tells of a mariner’s fate to wander the oceans forever, unless, during his reprieves to shore every seven years, he encounters a loving and faithful woman to redeem him. The Dutchman appears and is embraced by both father and daughter. When the Dutchman overhears George’s insistent pleas to Senta that she has pledged herself to him, he considers himself betrayed and departs. Senta’s hope for escape now gone, she strikes out in an act of desperate violence.
PROGRAM NOTES BLO’s production of The Flying Dutchman is a reexamination, as opposed to a presentation, of a great opera. There are many overlapping mysteries in Wagner’s violent, dark and swirling world. It’s not only the deep, restless and relentless ocean that his powerful music evokes, but also the even more tempestuous, impenetrably dense human psyche. Washing up on the rocky shores of both is the wreckage of those who have lost their way. Among the flotsam and jetsam there are no easy answers, only complex and dangerous questions for us all. Some of the questions are more obvious: Is the Dutchman real? Are his ghosts? What madness would compel a young woman to take her own life for a seemingly abstract ideal? Other questions are more complex and thus demand a more nuanced treatment: How could a father simultaneously treat his only child with such loving attention and dismissive cruelty? How could a daughter become so obsessed with the mythology of deliverance that she rejects the only man for whom love is unconditional? What significance does the seven-year interval hold for the hero’s window of redemptive opportunity? What compels a society to maintain a status quo of both grinding misery and willful ignorance? One of the most important benchmarks of success in such an undertaking is that both the artistic creators and especially the audience are able to ask probing questions about the characters, their literal and psychological narratives, and the implications of the whole experience. We will achieve our goal if each member of the audience takes something uniquely theirs from this shared experience. Michael Cavanagh Director

CONDUCTOR’S NOTE We are very privileged to be the first American company to have access to the critical edition of Wagner’s very first version of The Flying Dutchman, which he then modified many times throughout his life. The more often played standard version is based on a score from 1896 which was collated by conductor Felix Weingartner from many sources, and included everything that Wagner (and perhaps others) had ever added or changed—which was often only relevant to particular productions or venues. The problem for us is that many of these changes were made because Wagner himself wanted to alter perceptions of his own development, and to pretend that he was already writing in a much more mature style than was actually true. The surprising effect of this is that the resulting piece, in its familiar form, is neither what it originally was— a strong, light and energetic early Romantic score— nor one of Wagner’s true Music Dramas, his later weightier and more symphonic works. By removing all these accretions and performing the work in its original version, we actually get a cleaner and more energetic sound that is much more direct in its impact. It would take a whole book to list all the changes, but I will point out two particular examples. At the end of the opera, and in the parallel music at the end of the overture, Wagner later added a much slower sentimental ending (with a big harp solo and reference to Senta’s redemption motif) which interrupts the high energy race to the end and destroys all the momentum. This is the only music that the harp plays in the whole opera, and it weakens the dramatic intensity at a critical moment. We will not be performing this addition, of course! My other example is Wagner’s later addition of many directions of expression and tempo, some of which again rob the music of its momentum. The most significant of these is at the climax of the development of the overture, where Senta’s theme interrupts four times in a row. In the original, there is not a single tempo indication at these points, and the music was clearly intended to continue at exactly the same speed, but a tradition has evolved of slamming the brakes on and performing these few bars at half or even a third of the main tempo, returning to tempo for a few bars, slamming on the brakes again, etc. This destroys the long build-up of excitement, at precisely the moment when it should reach its climax! Wagner himself later added the marking un poco ritenuto, which surely could hardly suggest under half-tempo? If you are used to hearing the traditional version, our performance without change of tempo will sound very strange to you, but I am convinced that it is much stronger without this stopping and starting. The only possible defense for the much slower tempo—that the nature of the theme itself necessarily demands the tempo reduction—is proved invalid by the theme’s later appearance in the coda at a very quick tempo that no one contests. If it can be played quickly here, why not earlier? My approach throughout has been to consider all the traditions that have evolved in the performance of this opera, and to question whether or not they really improve the music. We haven’t thrown everything out, but those who know this piece well will notice many changes, and, I hope, a real heightening of energy and drama throughout. This is a very strong and original early Romantic opera, not a pale shadow of what was to come!
