FROM THE

Director

No longer Wichita’s Best Kept Secret. It is an honor and a pleasure to be part of Botanica during its 25th Anniversary. The volunteers and staff have done an excellent job preparing programs and the gardens for the best celebration ever. The yearlong celebration has brought back old events as well as the creation of new events. Many people who visited Botanica have experienced the gardens for the first time during the 25th Anniversary and many of them have become members. Botanica is truly becoming a community garden and is no longer Wichita’s best kept secret. Botanica continues to partner with the City of Wichita, building a new event center that will be underway during 2012. The center will provide additional space for rentals and education and will be located on the north side of the original building. The completion date is estimated in late 2013.

The Downing Children’s Garden continues to be the prime attraction for Botanica. It is a delight to watch children pass under the rainbow and their imagination leads them to discover the mysteries of nature. The garden has become a special place for families and friends to grow together. Please continue giving, going & growing with Botanica during its 25th year through memberships, donations and volunteering and attending special events.

Happy Anniversary,

In Bloom Greetings from the Gardens and welcome to summer. As June heats up and our 25th anniversary celebrations wind down, we continue to marvel at the last 25 years and look forward to our future. Our spring show was outstanding in color this year. Due to the lack of frost or freezes every flower bud bloomed profusely— despite the fact that everything bloomed 3-6 weeks earlier than it normally does. I have never seen the daffodils, tulips, cherries, pears, crabapples, peonies, iris, poppies and roses bloom so brilliantly vibrant in the masses as they did this spring. I hope that you were able to visit the Gardens to enjoy all the spring colors. We are ready to continue into summer with an abundant display of color with high hopes of a much easier summer weather conditions than last summer. New summer perennials for you to search out and find in the gardens include: Echinacea (coneflowers) like ‘ Solar Flare’ which has bright orange-red 5” flowers with a dark brown center; ‘Southern Bell’ a magenta pink fully double flowers with tennesseensis parentage; ‘Irresistible’ flowers emerge yellow and copper then turn coral and red-orange. Hemerocallis (Daylily) like ‘Wizard of Oz’ a bright yellow variety; our namesake ‘Botanica’ a bright purple variety or ‘Kansas Kitten’ a rich lavender purple.

WITH PATRICK MCKERNAN

Phlox (Tall Garden Phlox) like ‘Victoria’ with magenta flowers or ‘Peacock Cherry Red’ with cherry red flowers and ‘Volcano Purple with White Eye’ that has dark lavender flowers with a white eye. Look for these perennials along with other new summer blooming varieties of Rudbeckias, Hosta and Nepta that you will want to add to your own garden next year. Botanica has always been known for its colorful summer annuals both in beds and containers throughout the Gardens. This year new finds include: Copperleaf- Inferno, Mardi Gras and Marginata Bronze. Joseph Coat- Mai Tai, White Variegated and Raspberry Rum. Impatiens- Sun Lady Mix, Patchwork, Peach Prism and Cosmic Burgundy. Annual GrassesCherry Sparkler, Fireworks and Sky Rocket. ColeusChocolate Splash, Versa Burgundy to Green, Wasabi. Lantana- Fireworks, Lucky Flame and Sunny Side Up. Going beyond the run-of-the-mill summer annuals we will also once again have, Bed of Nails, Papaya, Easter Egg Plant, Candle Bush and Hairy Balls to name a few. Look to see if you can find Guatemalan Rhubarb, Jack Fruit, Mellow Lobster Claws, White Flowered Golden Plume or Musical Notes Clerodendrons on your next visit. All of these new summer annuals along with thousands of others ensure that Botanica will be bright and colorful throughout the summer with lots of plants that you haven’t seen before.

We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to each of the following for helping us with the following updates to the garden: Volunteers Roger Dick, Lee Crawford and Dick Anderson who helped the garden staff build the new education shed south of the Downing Children’s Garden. The material was donated by Sutherland Lumber Co. This was a large under-taking and with the help of those volunteers we have a great shed for storage. The Kansas Pond Society spent the morning of March 31st dividing Botanica’s Hardy Water Lily collection. This is a huge, dirty project that the club has volunteered to do for many years now and we greatly appreciate their support and help.

Summer is a great time to visit the water gardens at Botanica. We have purchased two different varieties of Victoria Lilies this summer and we hope to have the 5-6’ wide leaves spread out on the water surface and have 10-12” white flowers once again highlighting our collections. Among our hardy water lilies, 3 new varieties stood out in the collection last year. ‘Perry Baby Red’ has blooms dark red with 3-31/2” flowers on a plant with a 4’ spread. ‘Escarboucle’ blooms deep cherry red with 6-7” flowers on a plant with a 6-8’ spread. ‘Rembrandt’ blooms 6-8” red flowers on a plant with 6-7’ spread. Besides red flower colors our collection has pink, white, yellow, peach and changeable flowers making the pond a place you want to visit each trip. We have also ordered several tropical water lilies for the pond. Tropicals are the only way to get blue and purple flower colors on water lilies. When visiting the pond enjoy the diversity of plants in the pond and all the colors they bring to the gardens.

Week Wholesale Roses donated 160 bare root roses to Botanica in March. About half of them were planted west of the peony border to add summer color to this area. The rest of the roses were planted in the rose Garden and throughout the entire garden. Donations like these give us new varieties and colors we might not have the budget for. Ball Seed Company once again donated about 450 new summer annuals from their trial beds. These come to Botanica through Mike DeRee, Balls local sales representative. These annuals are not available to the public yet this year. So once again you will see these new exciting plants at Botanica first so you can add them to your own garden next year. in Bloom continued on Pg. 4

The Downing Children’s Garden continues to be a big success with kids of all ages visiting. The diversity of new plant material in this new garden is incredible. The flowers on the new crab apple varieties along with the spring flowering shrubs has been exciting. The summer flowering shrubs and perennials will be interesting now that they have had almost a year of getting established. The garden still proves to have a big learning curve for the staff not only in plant material but in hardscape upkeep and staying ahead of all the daily wear and tear of our visitors. Over-all the garden turned out better than our initial expectations and is a great asset for Botanica.

From Left to Right: Cherry Sparkler and Copperleaf Inferno are two new annual varieities you can find in the gardens this year. Easter Egg Plant is returning to the gardens and Musical Notes Clerodendrons, right, is a new annual as well.

Gial Kaegi, another great Botanica volunteer, spent multiple days rebuilding the fence along the west side of the Butterfly Garden and the wooden rails on the fence south of the Beverly Blue Garden. Material for both projects was purchased by Friends of Botanica and installed by Gial and the garden staff. Both projects look great and give the garden a new clean look. Many thanks go out to Gial and Friends of Botanica The expansion of the Xeriscape Garden is almost complete with the removal of some of the older woody material in the center of the expansion. We have done some stonework and planted new shrubs and perennials. This is a great new addition to this garden and will greatly increase the summer color throughout this garden. The final stop in this update is the John Firsching Pinetum. We have decided due to the massive loss of pines to disease in the garden to rename and redesign it to the John Firsching Evergreen Collection. This enabled us to select from both typical evergreens and broadleaf evergreens. Phase one was completed this spring with the installation of 15 new species to the gardens and over 45 plants to help rebuild the screen for the water treatment plant and help educate the public on alternatives to pines. Work will continue on this new collection this fall. Stop by and see some of the new varieties we included. In closing, I would like to thank the many volunteers and my staff for all the hard work that has gone into the gardens this year. I personally invite each of you to visit the gardens weekly to discover the changes and beauty that summer has to offer at Botanica. No matter what your favorite summer bloomer is, you are likely to find something new in the gardens to inspire you. We strive to keep things new and different for the viewing pleasure of our members and visitors—come enjoy it all.

Butterfly HOUSE

On Display Daily – June through September It’s been 14 years since the Butterfly House opened and each year the enchantment and beauty of these magnificent insects continues to bring visitors back. What most visitors do not know is that the butterfly house is a controlled, public habitat dedicated to the education and exploration of butterflies.

Popular Species

Enter the Butterfly House, a 2,880 square foot enclosed exhibit and you will see numerous species of native and exotic butterflies in free flight. Sampling a variety of nectar plants and occasionally landing on visitors, the butterflies flutter about in their natural habitat. Visitors can learn about the butterfly life cycle first-hand as they emerge from their chrysalides and take their first flights, see the types of plants to add to your home landscape to attract butterflies or try your hand at identifying the different species. The Butterfly House is open daily from June-September during regular hours of operation and is included with admission or membership. It is an environment where people of all ages can get up close and personal with these beautiful insects and gain a keener insight of them. We invite you to visit the Butterfly House this summer and make your own connection. Oh...and don’t forget your camera.

As Botanica grows, so does its staff. With the addition of the Downing Children’s Garden and the increased special events for our 25th Anniversary, there have been several new positions created. In the last year we have added several additional garden staff, a special event coordinator, two new education staff members and an admministrative assistant. The hard work of our staff can be seen throughout the gardens, from the beautiful planting beds that are free of weeds, to the amphitheater filled with school groups and the success of the special events. Already this year we have had over 41,230 visitors to the gardens, with many attending our special events.
