Architecture concerns the human, the space, the environment, the material, the time and the society. What determines the architecture is not these elements, but the interactivity between these elements. This is not the definitive answer to the question: What is the nature of architecture? Perhaps, there is no definitive answer. Nonetheless, I will look for it constantly.

KINDERGARTEN

Even though the kindergarten function is a western production, the outer grounds of each unit easily evoke the layout of the Chinese garden courtyard. And the idea of "visiting the garden" in Chinese culture corresponds to children’s behaviors.

GARDEN

Chinese gardens in the south-east are often located in the city. The walls play the role of demarcation: the place inside is isolated from the outside world. The walls thus create, as a sign of a boundary, an internal security.

RESIDENCE

The residence consists of the combination of houses, is convergently located in an area of the garden. Most activities happen in this area. The residence completes the function of the garden. Because of the concentration of residence position, residents feel the community.

COURTYARD 4

The courtyard is the smallest unit of residence. It is used for lighting and ventilation. People feel a sense of belonging owing to the internal nature of the space.

Siheyuan (the traditional Chinese courtyard houses) is the typical model of internal space in China. This model is well suited t

community of children. We do not emphasize the cultural symbol, but represent this model through the modern architectural lan

composed of two classes of the same grade, which favors the play between the children of the same age, and gives a more rational

If we deal with our analysis in depth, we will see that the internal character is revealed by the gradation of space and by the symm the symmetry of doors). The modification based on the last two: the door opens from the middle to the corner, which helps to Inside, the floor height increases and continues to spiral upward on the opposite house roof. In the image on the left, the figure-bottom relationship is reversed. It is easy to see that the "non-architectural" part (the courtyard and the gray space) reveals a tendency to surround the architecture in the opposite direction. This makes architecture a kind of "courtyard", and emphasizes the centripetal effect. To create an identity, the three different routes serve the three units. Through some Chinese garden construction methods, the space is made more pleasant. • L’unité d’ouest se trouve à côté de mur extérieur. A l’extérieur du mur, une pelouse en pente est "empruntée ", en tant qu’une belle vue, dans la cour. • Two vertical walls are established in the middle unit. The "frame sight" process of the windows is used in the two-way "enter-exit", so that children can see the patio view. • The four parallel walls are established in the east unit. The distance between the walls becomes smaller, the dimension of windows diminishes, creating a "depth-of-field" effect, and a change of light.

Chapter 2. Door at the border We go up to the stairs which is moving towards the patio; the sound, the light become pure in the cement container. The diffusion of light reflected from the curved wall indicates the door position. The landing extends as an awning, completes the "intention" of the door.

Chapter 1. Entry Reflected in the water of the basin, the light of the patio flows. The slope prolongs the time of mental preparation.

16

The window frame of the Chinese garden, indicates the position of the door. The ticket office is covered by the light rainbow sky, colorful and glowing. The rest room and the exit room are divided by a hanging wall which prevents the view; the water on the ground serves as an ambiguous mediator to link the two spaces.

Chapter 3. Pieces of time The volume of light is cut by passing the openings in small pieces; Time is divided into innumerable moments.

Chapter 4. The other world The screen lights up, the time of the other world begins to flow, the time of the real world begins counting down.

Chapter 5. Alarm clock The sundial and the clepsydra are the symbol of time. After the exit of the room, at the sight of a part of sculpture, one has the first impression, one then passes the doorway which symbolizes the transformation of space-time, arrives at the exit room, looks sculpture, wakes up in the real world.

The buildings distance from window to core is 15m which is in excess of the naturally ventilated norm. The design as built has the interior glass wall left out at the balconies in the atriums. This allows the fresh air to penetrate the entire office floor without mechanical assistance. Air warmed by occupants and equipment rises up the chimney-like light wells. 31

Accessibility The complexity of the land results from the geographical particularity of the site. It is located between the ancient village of Ciqikou and the old steel factory of Chongqing, on the western edge of the Jialing River, and next to it are modern residences. Because of the fracture of space, time, industry and life, the land becomes an isolated island. 44

INSTALLATION

Sujet: Interactivity Site: Chongqing, China 66

67

As a creator, we do not try to show something to the audience, we only create a relationship. Between the creators and the installation: we fix the speed of ink dripping and the initial position of the drop when it falls to the ground. Between nature and installation: the diffusion of ink in the pigment cannot be controlled, but the change of airflow and temperature surely gives the influence for diffusion. Between the spectators and the installation: we enter the installation, raise the curtain. This action moves the installation and changes the drip position. 68

Round suspended ceiling The round ceiling in the middle is suspended by tying on the four columns around. The two spaces at the top and bottom linked by the middle who creates a floating lightness.

Curtain A circle of wires hanging from the ceiling forms the curtain, and determines an internal character space and at the same time allows visual accessibility.

China ink box The automatic control in the square ink box fixes the dripping speed of the black ink.

Round plate The plate is filled with white pigment as a canvas.

69

The image of a moment may reflect the result of previous superimposed effects. When viewers see the image, the action of looking constantly acts on the image. But the own image does not make sense, it is hoped that the spectators become aware of the interactivity between themselves and the installation. 70
