welcome TO THE SALE I would like to welcome everyone to Red Round 2016. I was excited about Red Round-up going into 2015 but I am even more excited headed in Red Round-up this year more than ever. I believe the weekend of Oct 21-22, 2016 is going to be one to remember for a lot of years to come within the Red Angus breed. We are going to have a lineup of cattle that are second to none in the country. The activities taking place on Friday are going be the kick off to the whole weekend. The Junior heifer calf extravaganza that was a huge highlight last year is back again and looking to be even more exciting with the potential that junior members have a chance to win a sale credit. This year the Bull Futurity is back again, this will bring to town some of the up and coming herd sires in the business, what makes it even more exciting the Champion and Reserve will both be a part of the sale this year. What a chance to purchase a super star in the making. The weekend that is shaping up has me excited and even more excited to be a part of this great Red Angus breed. I look forward to visiting and seeing everyone in Red Deer. I want to personally invite everyone to this event and take in the whole thing to witness history in the making. Not only is this event limited to Red Angus breeders, but any cattle enthusiast out there. Everyone is welcomed to attend. Thank you to all my board members for all the hard work and commitment that each and every one of them has put in this year. It is has all helped to set Oct 21-22,2016 to be one of the best in Red Angus History. The Board and I look forward to seeing everyone in Red Deer.

Welcome
FROM BOUCHARD LIVESTOCK INTERNATIONAL I would like to take this opportunity to welcome the beef industry and all beef producers to the 44th Annual Red Roundup sale in Red Deer, Alberta on October 21st and 22nd. There may not be another purebred cattle sale that has been as instrumental to the success of a purebred breed as Red Roundup has been to the Red Angus breed. The sheer tenure of this sale speaks volumes, 44 years. When you think of the successful Red Angus programs that have used Red Roundup as a stepping stone to achieve their success and stature I find it amazing. Many of these programs have marketed through Red Roundup and many still do as well as numerous front end programs have used Red Roundup to source herd building genetics. The 2016 consignors have brought you a stellar offering. The live cattle will walk and talk with the best in North America. The genetic section will represent the best bloodlines offered anywhere, and will have the potential to go on and produce the kind cattle that will keep Red Roundup on pace for years to come. For Red Angus breeders, Red Roundup has always been an opportunity to showcase your very best. It is never easy to consign that great one to a sale but there also has never been a better way to showcase your program than to excel in front of your peers where the competition is of the highest level.
I would be neglectful if I didn’t point out the huge benefit Red Roundup holds for breeders that have outgrown the need to consign to the Annual Red Roundup sale. If you hold an annual event, what an opportunity Red Roundup is for your potential buyers to consign that high selling bred heifer or the first calves off of that $50,000 or $100,000 herd bull. I ask that you do not take this weekend for granted. Like any other function, at times it has had its challenges but for all Red Angus producers the efforts are small compared to the rewards. The Red Angus breed needs to be very appreciative of the donations to the annual Canadian Red Angus Promotion Society fundraiser auction. Without the generosity of these Red Angus enthusiasts and the support of major players in the beef industry the Friday night sale would not be possible. Come out and be heard from, that is the best way I know to show your appreciation. The Bouchard Livestock team are once again pleased to have Bryan Mackenzie on staff to host Red Roundup, number 44. All the Bouchard Livestock staff cell numbers are listed in the front of the book. It is always an honour and our pleasure to assist with evaluations and potential purchases on your behalf. We look forward to working with every one of you for the success of this great event.

Welcome
There have been many opening welcome letters penned by several astute and well versed cattlemen for these pages that make up the Red Round-up catalog. Some have been filled with wisdom, some with predictions and some just blah generic and cliché filled sentences! Just as in Bull Durham, the famous baseball movie with Kevin Costner and Tim Robbins…Crash, the catcher, says to Nuke, the pitcher, he must practice his interview quotes…so remember: “The Good Lord willing…I just want to help the ball club!” I can relate to this statement! That is exactly the way I am viewing my role on this event and being involved with my good friends at Bouchard Livestock. Sherry and I have stepped back quite a bit from our MSM company and in Red Round-up, we both just want to do our parts to help make this ‘team’ of ours, and that involves all consignors, all sponsors, and all staff a little stronger. I often think back to the first annual meetings of the promotional society and wonder if we’ll ever get there again. There was no pressure, no envy, no animosity… just pure intentions to advance our color of angus into unchartered territory! We heard terms like a helping hand, encouragement, and “congratulations pal, your heifer sure looked good!” My point to all this is this? I truly believe that after an extensive selection tour in the summer of 2016, we have assembled a group of consignors that will closely resemble those first few groups of the Red Round-up founding breeders and enthusiasts! After the fantastic event we all shared in the 2015 Red Round-up I gathered the feeling from them that they couldn’t hardly wait to get back to Red Deer this fall again! They’re posting stuff on Facebook like maniacs! As soon as I left the yard! If I was ever running from the law, I wouldn’t have gotten far because I think the whole world knew exactly where I was travelling to and from!! Let’s just say this, the enthusiasm they all showed this summer kept me energized in a very positive way. And that’s just the people…Now how about the cattle…I firmly believe this is without doubt the easiest summer selection tour I’ve ever done. Once people around the world get to see this set of pictures, pedigrees, and footnotes for this year’s

FROM BRYAN & SHERRY MACKENZIE
edition, I think it’ll knock’em out! The willingness, eagerness and anticipation had everyone vibrating out of the pastures to “free up the best!” That was a term I heard quite often and I just want to say - thanks to all the hard working and dedicated consignors involved. Now, I’m sure you’ll all agree, if the cattle pictured in the next 60 + sacred pages of the mighty Red Roundup catalog are on your wishlist (just like the old sears catalog), and if they look ½ as good in person…we are going to have a memorable event in Red Deer, AB on October 21 - 22. Come and see for yourself why I can proudly once again say “if you are only going to attend one Red Angus event this fall, let it be Red Round-up!” Call me or any of our very qualified staff if you need any assistance whatsoever – we’re here to help! Yours Sincerely,
Bryan and Sherry Bryan & Sherry MacKenzie 403.627.8266

We are super excited when we were asked if we would like to give away the donation heifer at Red Round-up. I wonder if the foundation members really realized what they were starting. Red Round-up has set the tone for the fall female sales and many breeds have attempted to replicate it. 44 years is quite the journey, and it would never have been the success it is without all the volunteers and sales staff over the years – So thank you to ALL of you. Your work does not go unnoticed. The heifer we are donating is an absolute RIP of a Smokin jJo daughter. Her dam and granddam are both still in our herd with many daughters as well. The Lidela cow family has been totally amazing at raising bulls and they have produced many high sellers over the year. Out of 8 sons only one never made the bull sale. We really love Red Round-up and hope this sweet heifer calf can become a legend just like Red Round-up is!
Donation Heifer Auction Procedure 1. 2.
3. 4.
The final bid in each round will denote the amount of that bidder’s donation. Example: Round 1: Final Bid is $300 to John Doe. John’s donation is $300 Round 2: Final bid is $250 to Tom Jones. Tom’s Donation is $250 Round 3: The female is re-auctioned until no further bids are received at the low of $10 Each $10 purchased (donated) represents one chance in the final draw, e.g. John Doe has 30 chances, Tom Jones has 25 chances and so on down the scale to the final $10 donation worth one chance each. One ticket for every $10, bearing the contributor’s name will be put into the draw barrel. At the end of the sale, one ticket will be drawn with that person winning the heifer.

Pasture exposed to Red MLRA Millenium 75B from May 5 to Aug 3, 2016. Vet checked on Aug 27, 2016, 120 days bred.
Many will remember Red Wraz Serebl 84B from Red Round-up 2015 as choice lot of three Ghost Rider bred heifers; I chased all three hoping to get 84B. When I first saw 84B she peeked my interest, she was moderate size, walked very good on a very nice set of legs with a good foot under her. As the days went by I checked her out numerous times, finally deciding to try and buy her. Being Ai’ed to Red Brylor Kodiak 3A didn’t hurt either. I sent her back home with Phil to look after. In March when I was out to SK I stopped in at Wraz to have a look at her and her calf, WOW was I impressed with 84B’s udder and the job she was doing on her first heifer calf. I’m still not sure how Bryan McKenzie got 84B in this year’s sale! If 84B is chosen I would like to retain 1 future flush with a minimum of 6 #1 embryos at the new owner’s convenience and my expense. Red WRAZ/NBT Serebl 37D is an own daughter of Red Brylor Kodiak 3A. She may not be the biggest heifer calf at the 44th edition of Red Round-up but I think she will stand on her own merits, along with her legs and feet. Kodiak 3A’s dam, Red Brylor Fayette 40Y was the full sib to Red Brylor Eberle 50Y who I owned in partnership, so the family is very familiar to me. They say the one’s you should be keeping are the ones to sell, I tend to agree even if it is tough decision. Whichever female is chosen on October 22, 2016 I will gladly take the other female home to carry on the family line! 44th Annual Canadian Red Round-up

Exposed to Red DMM Glesbar Barndance 35X from April 24 to May 13. Exposed to Red Ter-Ron Freemont 34Y from May 13 to July 1.
46X is back at Red Round-up once again, last year she was here and we sold a flush to Mark Chriss, which she produced 9 implanted embryos on. This time she is back but we have decided to offer up a part of her. How often does an opportunity come around to purchase a MA Free daughter of Squall? As I stated last year I can see how big of a genetic loss Squall was to the Red Angus breed. All of the Squall daughters that I have seen are big-topped, powerful, with lots of spring of rib, and drop-dead gorgeous udders. 46X has had an outstanding track record to date on her progeny. All of her calves are working in purebred herds, with last year’s heifer calf selling to Carson Berg through Red Roundup. Here is a chance to purchase a donor cow just getting into the prime of her life. Offering 50% interest in cow or full interest in calf. Here is the very first daughter of Bazinga to be offered for sale and she is going to be the only Bazinga daughter that we will sell this year. The Bazinga calves have absolutely left us speechless of how good they are in his first calf crop. We will be retaining all his heifer calves as replacements in our herd and are looking to retain a son to replace Bazinga as we lost him during breeding season this spring. Watch for GOAD 104D a Bazinga son in the bull show. Bazinga was the high selling bull out of the 2015 Get-a-Grip Bull Sale from Ter-ron Farms; he was also the 2014 Red Round-up Bull Calf Champion. Here’s yet another incredible opportunity to acquire some top genetics from a cutting edge breeding program that focuses on easy fleshing, high performance females while still maintaining that front pasture eye appeal. Bryan and the Bouchard sales team continue to select our top females for this prestigious sale. We love this pair so much, we are only willing to part with one of them, but it’s your choice. Red Shiloh Betsy 60B has done an incredible job on her first calf. Betsy has an extremely gentle disposition and although she was picked out of the pasture, easily halter broke in just a few short days. Her above average WW and YW EPDs and extraordinary milk EPD of +22 make this female a must have in your breeding program. Along with a very select group of our females, she has been bred to our exciting new herd sire, Red Circle G Cargo 8C. Her heifer calf, SCCA 12D, was affectionately named “ desirable “ for several reasons. She is extremely powerful in her makeup with tremendous rib shape and is attractively clean fronted. With a bw of 76 lbs, her performance has been outstanding. She is sure to have all the positive attributes that her dam possesses. Her sire, Redrich Bumpercrop 336B is one of our top calving ease herd sires, with progeny that hit the ground running, expressing impressive growth in their first few months. We can’t wait to see which of these outstanding females the lucky buyer chooses, but we know the choice won’t be an easy one.

AI bred on May 5th to Red 1EN Best Man C401. Exposed to Red Bar 4A Roughrider 579C May 19th to June 11th.
Sometimes when you are partnered with the guy who is in charge of selecting for the mighty Red Round-up sale you have to part with heifers you normally never would. Polly 582C is an absolute stunner from the standpoint of profile, muscle, and femininity. She’s all that and more! Brylor has 4 paternal sisters from the 215Z bull and their udders are out of this galaxy! She’s AI bred to an up and comer in this breed in Best Man from our friends in Minnesota the Nelson brothers (Eric & Jessie). They’ve been big supporters of ed Round-up in the past. Exposed to a $10,750 Roughrider grandson that is a big time heifer bull.
RED 1EN BEST MAN C401, Service Sire to Polly 582C
Can you believe that we’re not retaining a ½ interest? She’s the type that Mark would dearly love to have held onto but he also knows this statement to be all too true….the kind to keep is the kind to buy and is also the kind to sell!

Bred AI on April 21, 2016 to Red Fine Line Mulberry 26P.
Cow families are important at Mar Mac. This Easter cow family has left a strong group of maternal females in our herd. The Ribeye females are prime examples of females with some performance but yet made tremendous mother cows. Easter 43C has a ½ sister 87Z who was a top selling Red Angus female at the Keystone Klassic Sale a few years ago and is a stand out productive female. Easter will catch your eye on sale day with her moderate frame, natural thickness and mother cow look. Watch for her video at marmacfarms.net. She sells bred April 21, 2016 with no exposure to the breed leading sire, Red Fine Line Mulberry 26P. You can not go wrong owning a Mulberry. We have had our eye on this Ghost Rider daughter for quite some time now. She was right at the top of our heifer calf pen last year and here she is as Bryan’s top pick of over 80 bred heifers this year. She is hard to part with but the kind we want to keep or buy are also the ones to sell. The Maria females are typically very fertile and produce longer than most. The cornerstone Maria 2J has as strong of foot as any female I have seen and she is still here producing with her 17th natural calf at her side. She was slated for the flush program but timing was off so she went back out with the bull again this year! Her dam 70U has done it again this year with a bull calf you will find in our Agribition pen. We have a large group of Ghost Rider daughters with calves at side this year and the most common comment is WOW look at those calves!

Carmella is off a second calving Barndance daughter that is making an impact with her first couple of calves, she is currently raising a top Bazinga bull calf. We still have her grand dam that we purchased from Cinder Angus; she was one of the original purchases when we started to expand our purebred herd. We went back and used the old Karweik bull because of the depth and power of his daughters that we have seen. As an added bonus it never hurts to have the influence of the Miss Essence cow family up close in the pedigree. It is always hard to part with a female of her quality and especially from the Carmella cow family but we wanted to have some of our best showcased in Red Deer.

Her grand dam, 38L, is a CAA designated ELITE female and is presently raising another good one at 15 years young. 35C’s dam is a tidy attractive Detour female we think a lot of – she works overtime and at full throttle. 35C carries the exciting service to Red Lauron Block Buster 78B. Sammy 20C represents a lot of things that we seek in the building of the Fine Line herd. She is a stout and thick dark red heifer. We have watched NVG 20C progress from a calf to a bred with great interest and it was no surprise when “eagle eye” B. Mackenzie started sorting her out in the bred pasture. Her sire Dividend 42A has matured into a massive and productive herdsire for us. His scrotal has levelled off at 44-45 cm range and if that’s an indication of daughters fertility, she will be productive. Her dam 22A is very much a replica of the 12A (both Packer daughters) cow that is also in the sale. 22a’s Haymaker son will also be in contention when the pick of the bull pen is selected.

Well we just couldn’t steer Bryan away from this heifer. We tried every angle to not part with her. Olivia 505C has been a standout heifer from the day she was born. She is has always been the first noticed heifer in the group. Her dam is a Red Round-up alumni in 2012 from EKW Red Angus out of Hague, SK that has consistently given us our first picked bull calf from our bull pen. We currently have a full brother to 505C as our main herd bull. 23X has a phenomenal udder and excellent feet. She has continuously passed on her gentle temperament on all her previous calves. Her sire, Red Lazy MC Honky Tonk 11X has played a large roll in our AI program. 23X has never missed a breeding as she has caught on her first cycle every year whether AI’ed or Pasture Bred. A special deal here! The very first Eruption female to sell at Red Round-up. Eruption 36T, the grand dam to this heifer was purchased at Red Round-up ‘08, campaigned many times winning a few reserve champion honors and being the dam to RED DTA Overflow 1W who was a high selling bull for us and has made an impact on a few great programs in the breed. When it comes to getting the job done, the Crimson 68Y line definitely enhances and improves the breed in performance, structure, and calving ease. Another benefit is the potential replacement females just as 15C presents. A great structured female with all the correct traits needed to add to your herd. An added feature of the Crimson line is their disposition is very easy to work with, especially during calving season.

When selections take place with the open herd policy, sometimes it becomes a hard decision to contemplate when a heifer of the caliber of 16C is selected. However that is in your best interest as a potential owner of an animal such as this one. Why? One reason is her pedigree, particularly her sire NLT 74Y who is packed with performance, weaning ratio of 151 on NO creep feed and the stretch and deep hips he has added to his progeny. Another reason is 16C herself. She is just so complete and well structured for the breed, performance, and becoming a top brood cow. She is one of the many reasons the Red Angus breed continues to be interesting and well worth being part of!

Rosey has been a standout since day one. She is sired by our new bull we purchased in 2015 from Wilbar. He is a son of Messmer Packer and their Cora 159L donor cow. He has some very good full sisters at Wilbar. He’s a dark red bull full of muscle and meat placed on a very correct structure. 628S is one of our cows that raises the good ones year after year. She came to us “in-dam” through the All AI’d sale. Her first calf was a high seller though the bull sale to Bar M Stock Farms. She has had 3 daughters in the herd. Another bull was a high seller to Fineline through the Southwest Bull Development Centre Sale. Two bulls retained for our own herd and a bred heifer in the pen at home. 647D is going to be an awesome cow for someone in the future. Everyone tells me that Packer leaves great females... and this one has some very good cows in the pedigree to make her even better.

Maria is a heifer we have been watching all year. 22X has been stellar for us since we bought her from Emmatt Creek, raising two high selling bulls through the Southwest Bull Development Centre to Batho Farms and JAS Red Angus. Last year she raised a heifer calf that sold through this sale to Six Mile Ranch. Her sire was purchased in 2014 from Brylor as a heifer bull extraordinare. He does a job fantastic, walks on very good feet and legs, and we are looking forward to using him for several more years on the cow herd. His sire left some very good daughters for those that used him. His dam raised another great son for Brylor before moving to Bar 4A. Our 44A sons in the spring bull sale were highly sought after for their small BWs with explosive growth. This fancy younger female is deserving of a second look. Bryan had his pick of the females and this is what he selected or else she wouldn’t be here. 44th Annual Canadian Red Round-up

You talk about doing to yourself as you’ve done to others…All summer long, at every stop on the 2016 selection tour, I have taken the absolute cream off the top! No corner of any field was left untouched to find the best calendar year heifer calves…Lakme 12D is certainly no exception! She’s a well bred, big bodied dark red heifer calf. Mark Chriss, our only US consignor, bought the embryos in Reno a few years back – the last of 204S we had for $1300 US per embryo. She was the 2009 Canadian show female of the year (Also the year of the forum in Canada). 12D’s sire is the high EPD bull named Opportunity 53Y. His 1st milking daughters are the real deal…beautiful udders and easy fleshing! Lakme 12D is the kind to build a program around! CONSIGNED BY ON THE MARK CATTLE CO. OPPORTUNITY 53Y, Sire of Lakme 12D

Bonita 10D is an interesting individual. This extremely thick made, very correct, feminine heifer calf has been a stand out since birth. Bonita 65X was purchased at the Brylor September sale and has made her mark at Mar Mac. Her daughter was the high selling lot at the Mar Mac New Generation Female Sale for $ 24,000 last fall and she has many sons working in Manitoba herds. Bonita 10D’s sire is our new outcross sire Capacity. His first sets of calves are truly exciting with lots of performance, eye appeal and natural thickness. Watch for her video at marmacfarms.net. Mar Mac did not want to part with this heifer calf but Bryan talked us into selling a ½ interest in 10D and possession will be negotiated after the sale. Mar Mac is willing to work with the new buyer. Mar Mac feels there is a lot of opportunity in this female and want to be part of her success in the future.

35D is an embryo resulting from the mating of CAA designated ELITE female 3S from our cherished Blackbird family and Red Bieber Rollin Deep Y118, a sire who has positively influenced our herd producing outstanding highly sought after sons and superb model females. It is no coincidence this is the third year a Rolling Deep sired heifer calf has been selected for Red Round-up, one being 35D’s flushmate and a paternal brother, Red Lauron Block Buster 78B, championed the Young Guns division last year. Her heritage on the bottom side of her pedigree boasts a multitude of top cows always delivering the very best. This deep sided cherry red babe has all the potential to meet every expectation and beyond! CONSIGNED BY LAURON RED ANGUS

This cherry-red double bred Smokin Jo daughter will certainly get noticed at Red Round-up. 150Z has been a standout young cow and look forward to see what her future brings. Last year her daughter was also selected for Red Round-up and sold to Shana Lee Fankhandle for $7000. Shana Lee showed her at 4-H and she was Champion heifer in her club and District Reserved Supreme Champion female only behind Shana Lee’s pair Red Vikse Esme 166B. The power on the sire's side of this pedigree is totally over the top. With X-Caliber and the 608S cow family mixed in with Smokin Jo’ it doesn’t get better than that. We would love to help you breed her. Comes with semen of your choice from our tank. Entered in junior show at Farmfair. CONSIGNED BY VIKSE FAMILY FARM

I have always admired Big Rock daughters with their excellent udder structure. The day Big Rock 85T sold for a long $ into the US we were fortunate enough to purchase one of the few semen packages. The sire to Red Roxie 12D is Big Rock 121Y. He is the result of one of those straws of semen and what a set of progeny he has left us! Grand-dam Roxie 293X has an impressive record with our high selling Ghost Rider son in the 2015 bull sale at $26000 and we have retained another full brother Ghost Rider 95C. She has done it again this year with a son you will find in our Agribition pen. Dam 97Z is following in her mother’s footsteps with Roxie 12D. This ET daughter of Ghost Rider and Serebl 95N has been a standout since birth. I have stated before that the 95N cow family is our top production cow family at WRAZ. We know that the Ghost Rider females are milking great and producing even better than we expected! There were three breds from the Serebl cow family in this same sale last year that averaged well over $8000.00 including a full sister WRAZ 104B at $10, 000.00. Investing in well proven genetics at a sale of this calibre is never a bad idea! Just get ‘er done.

The opportunity to purchase a direct Grand Canyon 1244 daughter is very rare – and here she is! This is a sharp fronted, wedgy female that is typified by her sire, and a female that will be a great producer – or drag her into the show ring, either way, you won’t be disappointed. This girl may not picture as well as she should have, but in person, she has eye appeal, great movement and correctness and puts it into a smooth, feminine package that makes you look twice. Classy 23D had a very respectable 680 lb. ww on August 29th, and will continue growing into a gorgeous, soft made female. Her pedigree is loaded with goodness, including greats like Robin Hood 117, Grand Canyon, and Cinder Pursuit 101S. Suiji Lass 52D (Honey) is exactly as her picture depicts; dark cherry red, deep and wedgy, and tons of eye appeal. She is about as attractive as we’ve ever made them here – and we’re not the only ones with that opinion (our daughter would love to have kept her!). She was taken out this summer by our daughters to several shows and has been appreciated by many admirers on both sides of the border. She has topped her class at all her shows with her most recent title of Reserve Champion Female (Open division) at the All Breeds Junior Show. She has a dynamic presence in the ring and coupled with her powerful capacity, she will certainly not be overlooked. These Red Lone Stone Revolver daughters are making super mother cows that are easy doing and have exemplary dispositions. Take her home and fill your replacement pen with her daughters and fill your pockets when you sell her sons.

Cheta 93D (Storm) is coming to town. She is smooth made, easy fleshing and is a pedigree proven female. Storm is sired by Marvel 404A, and she will make one heck of a cow with Red Basin Ext 45T5, Park Place, and Warrior 5K in her family tree. Her dam is a super progeny producer out of Park Place and this cow is as good as they come. 93S has produced daughters that are making great mothers and at 10 years old, this elite dam doesn’t look like stopping any time soon. In last year’s Red Round-up, 93S produced one of the high sellers and the Junior Futurity Champion. That same female has gone on to win shows all summer, culminating with the “Bracket Winner”, against 71 other bred heifers of all breeds, and the next day was named Reserve Champion Owned Female at the All Breeds Junior Show. Storm is following in her sister’s footsteps and will make someone one heck of a great female both phenotypically and by the numbers.

Miss is a very striking daughter of the popular Vision 50T. We chose to use Vision 50T as an AI sire based upon his proven track record of producing balanced and eye appealing progeny. The results have been overwhelming with progeny becoming high sellers to Twin Heritage, WCF, & WRAZ in the past. We are simply over the moon with the production ability of our Indicator 30Z daughters. Solid from nose to tail and correct from the ground up is the best way to describe them. Other females from the Belmoral Miss 10’08 cow family are working in the notable herds of Wilbar & T-K. Miss 3D is a showstopper and needs to be campaigned in the future!! Make sure to find her in the heifer calf line up, you will be glad you did.

CROSSFIRE, Sire of Show Girl 23D
Red DTA Elora 13D OPEN HEIFER
O p e n
Right from the get-go 23D has made you take a second look at her as you walk through the pasture or pen. Show Girl 23D is a deep bodied, fancy heifer that carries a lot of maternal traits with her. You can appreciate this heifers growth and performance thus far. Her sire, Crossfire, which is a full brother to Magic Mike has sure made a impact on our herd from day one. Crossfire passes on that natural muscling and length of body to all his calves. No matter if its bulls or females, his progeny always come to the top. 23D would be a great addition to anyone's operation.

A female off the top of our herd sired by the great Parker bull. We think so much of Parker we purchased the third top seller at Ter-ron this spring sired by him. 13D's dams full sister was on the pair we had reserve mature cow to the supreme champion female at farm fair, and she sold to Diamond C Ranch in Texas. Her grand dam Elora 900T is one of the most popular cows at our place being a silver medalist at world forum and a sask gold show champion female as well as the 2008 Red Round-up lead off female when we purchased her.

We bought Red Wildman Crank 431B from the good people at Wildman livestock. The reason we bought him was that his dam and great grandam are very good cows with great feed and legs and exceptional udders. Red Dwajo Jill is one of the first calves to sell out of one of our junior herd sires Red Dwajo Sorcerer 3B who is a Gladiator son with a -2.7 for BW and an above average WW &YW and Milk. The dam Red Lauron Jill 123B was purchased at Hunters spring production sale. She has a perfect udder and a good set of legs under her and has done quite a job on 16D for a first calver. Jill 16D is a thick, deep bodied heifer. She is definitely one of our favorites in this year's crop – a hard one to give up.

LAKIMA 623, Dam of Lakima 5D
Red Rack Karma 8D OPEN HEIFER
O p e n
Lakima 5D is a long, deep fancy thick made heifer calf with lots of eye appeal. 5D is a correct heifer that we think will have lots of friends on sale day. Dam 23S is one of our foundation cows purchased from Dennis & Shelley Erickson in 2007. Dam 23S is a moderate cow with great structure, thickness and very quiet disposition. If calf Lakima 5D turns out like her mom she will make a great replacement in any herd.

Karma 8D is a well put together female, with cherry red hair, style and length of body. Her dam LMP 88X was purchased from Brylor Ranch as a bred heifer out of the Tradition With A Vision Female Sale. She’s a moderate framed cow with strong feet structure and tremendous udder. Karma 6B was the lead off bred heifer of the 2015 Canadian Red Round-up Sale and sold to Six Mile Angus for $11,000. As well Karma 6C heifer calf sold to J Lazy A Ranch for $4000 at the same sale. Bryan twisted our arm to once again selected Karma 8D and as you will notice sale day this calf won’t disappoint you.

Rouge 14D is only a March 11th calf. 14D is smaller made but very correct and will mature into an excellent replacement female. You will love her cherry red hair coat and quiet disposition. On the bottom side, the dam of 14D goes back to Brylor Cherok 40X who has been used extensively in Brylor’s embro flush program. TerRon Julian 58A was purchased from Ter-Ron to breed our heifers and selected young cows. Julian has a strong hip and is very easy calving bull. He throws lots of style in his calves. Please don’t overlook this young heifer calf.

I would like to start off by thanking the past and present organizers and consigners of this great event. We are extremely excited and honored to be participating in such a prestigious event like Red Round-up 2016. Red J Lazy A Georgina 8D is a powerful, long spined, dark cherry red brood cow in the making. NVG 4U is a deep ribbed big volume daughter of Front Line with performance in her pedigree. Trap was third in the ring at the SSS 2014 sale, and he raised our high selling bull in last spring’s sale. We are excited to see his daughters have their first calves this winter. Without a doubt, every visitor to our farm picks out 2D and 10D as their favourites! They are the first calves offered for sale off of our newest herdsire, Red Lazy MC Soldier 134Z. Both of 2D’s and 10D’s dams are out of our cornerstone “Copper” cow line. They are both model Angus cows with sound structure and easy fleshing ability. It’s no surprise that they have been the cows that we have built our breeding program around. Never before have we had any of our Copper daughters for sale as they have been worth their weight in gold as replacement females. However, Bryan talked us into offering both of these heifer calves for sale, as well as 2D’s dam as a flush lot. We have given you the opportunity to look into the future to see how these heifers will mature as they are backed by this super strong maternal line. Their sire, Soldier 134Z is a son of the Red SSS Soldier 365W bull and the 2010 Canadian National Champion female Red YY Patty 701T. Soldier 134Z is a half sibling to the 2014 Denver Champion & Fort Worth Champion Bull Red Lazy MC Trooper 21Y, and Red Lazy MC Honky Tonk 11X. Both of these heifers will go on to do great things for your cow herd. They are smooth muscled, big ribbed with clean front ends. They are both very complete females, and will pass their consistency and correctness onto their offspring. More information and photos available at www.Y3Bar.ca

The Baroness 36C came out of our fall embryo program. The embryos were purchased from HR Hahn Cattle Co. and we couldn’t be more happy with the progeny from this mating. This heifer just flat-out, puts it all together. Masterful pedigree, phenotype, performance, maternal merit, capacity, style, exceptional quality, attractive … enough said. With her extra age, she will have more maturity at breeding time and be able to put some extra pounds on that first calf. Whether in the show ring or pasture, expect this lady to do great things for your program. The Baroness 58R cow is no longer around, so this may be your last chance to get one of her great progeny. This heifer has the makings of a fantastic cow. She comes directly out of one of our top females. Her mom has been a no fuss, no worry cow, and has raised us a top calf every year. We have retained two maternal half sisters in the herd, both of which were shown as heifer calves. Last year her bull calf was the first Red Angus bull sold in our private treaty bull sale and is working at MGM Cattle Co. This female’s sire, Headline, was reserve champion in the Red Round-up Futurity in 2014, and his first calves look awesome. 19D is a feminine heifer who packs a lot of power. She has great length in her side and doesn’t sacrifice through her middle and into her hind end. The only reason we can justify selling 19D is because we know her mother will make us more!

22D is a heifer that will easily go on to make someone very happy. She is a nicely-made, perfectly correct little heifer and should develop a near perfect udder. Her mother, a Sakic daughter, is a tank of a female. Her maternal grand dam is one of our original cows from Ron Devolane, and has become a cornerstone in our program. The females in this line are always favorites during pasture tours. Year-in and year-out they produce some of our highest performing calves, both off of pasture and in the pen. We purchased her sire, Alaska, from Diamond C Liberty Angus in Saskatchewan in 2015. He has produced a great first set of calves, and there will be plenty of paternal siblings in the replacement pen at home this year.

611D is a very dark cherry red calf out of the #1 WW and YW sire in North America, LSF MEW Gamechanger 1613Y. He is the sire of numerous 20K plus bulls sold by Benchmark Angus, and is now pasture walking for DYH. She has the potential to be a gamechanger, extra length and growth, one of an excellent group here at DYH. Her mother is from Anchor 1 Red Angus whom was purchased in a group of heifers in a deal negotiated at Red Round-up, a full bodied and perfect uddered second calver.

Bred March 30 to MRLA Redeem 4C and then exposed to Red Anchor 1 Kodiak 88C from April 16 to June 1
When Bryan came to select, we opened the door wide as this is and should be the Round-up way. After a 11 year absence from Round-up we wanted to bring animals that could really make a difference for their new owners. Elba 12A is a young matron that is destined to be one of those herd builders. Her first two daughters are absolutely stunning. Elba 12A is loaded with maternal giants, Packer, Mulberry, Squall, Matrix and Romeo. The exposure to RED MRLA Redeem 4C will be very exciting as this cow and her bred heifer here will be the only 2 services to MRLA Redeem 4C that will be offered from Fine Line this year. Even though 2D will come to town with her beautiful mom and a gorgeous bred sister, she will stand on her own with her very correct and stunning profile. Her sire Conquest has been around since 2004, and although sampled lightly in Canada, is a mainstay in so many of the great American herds. We sampled 10 units and the results are fabulous. Our consignment of pick of the bull calves definitely has three prospects from Conquest that will need to be considered. 2D has the look, the shape, the sire and dam to take her to the very top. 44th Annual Canadian Red Round-up

Miss Pathy came as part of an in dam purchase from Clint Kuntz when we purchased a group of cows when he dispersed. The dam 25Y was a cow that I had picked when we first started talking about buying a package as we had purchased a full sister to 166C the year prior with Corona Creek as the high selling heifer from his bull sale. The Staunch daughters are quickly making a great name for themselves in the breed. They are raising standout calves; we had a Staunch daughter raise our high performance heifer calf last year that sold through Red Roundup to Lonestone Farms. The Miss Pathy cow family is one that will make an impact and be a lasting cow family addition to any herd. Full sister to Miss Pathy 166’15
Offering Choice Selling both Maternal Sisters
Only in Red Round-up would we offer up an opportunity to purchase maternal sisters and selling full interest in both. 166D is out of our main stay herd sire Barndance. He was the 2012 Supreme Champion Bull at Farmfair, top 10 RBC Supreme, Grand Champion Red Angus Bull at Olds, Farmfair, and Agribition 2012. The Barndance daughters in our herd are really setting a lasting impression; they are raising some of our top calves every year. His daughters all have great udders, are powerful, angular through the lines, and all have the same tremendous feet that Barndance has.

Jet Stream is a super fancy direct daughter of the now deceased Moonshine 8081U that we were runner up on the day that Ole and Genex purchased him from the Crowfoot dispersal. Thanks to the power of AI we have been fortunate enough to utilize this unique sire in our program. The Moonshine calves are born easily and have explosive performance. The Jet Stream cow family originates from the very solid Brookmore herd in MB. Jack Hart was very well known within the Angus fraternity to have bred some of the very best cattle within the industry and will be dearly missed by all that knew him. This cow family has already produced a show heifer for Brittany Hunt of T&S Red Angus that won numerous ribbons and titles for her along the way. Bryan had spotted the dam of this heifer on his tour last summer as she is as complete as they come however he opted for the two heifer calves that were so very well recieved. Whether you hop a train, thumb a ride or jump a plane just make sure that you are in Red Deer when these heifers enter the sales ring.

She expresses extreme depth of fore rib while maintaining a huge spring to her ribcage. This is the type of female that we have been striving to produce and offering a female of this caliber is extremely difficult however she will go out into the industry and do great things for her new owner. She carries AI service to the curve bending Grand Slam 130Z who is the sire of the wildly popular Six Mile Signature, his genetics are in global demand. The exposure sire Bucc 54C was purchased this spring from Rack Red Angus as their high selling bull for $13,250 after searching long and hard for a calving ease sire with lots of gas in the tank. Either way the resulting calf from this outstanding young female will create some excitement!

Choice of 40 Front Pasture Cows bred Red U2 Riff 1213C Exposed Jun 20 to Aug 25. Pick to be done prior to Jan 1, 2017. We thought we’d try something a little different this year so why not open up our herd. We picked what we felt were our 40 best females and exposed them to Riff so why not give someone else the opportunity to get in on his first calf crop too! There will be no semen available in Canada for another year and a half. Riff was U2’s high priced bull this spring at $103K for half interest and is one of the most complete angus bulls we’ve ever seen. The cows bred to him represent some of Canada’s best Red Angus genetics over the last 15 Years. Mercedes, Indeed, Economy, Mommas Boy, Ole Oscar, Timberlake, Pursue, Detour, Boomer, Sam’s Prospector to name a few. Age of cows varies from 2-10 years old. Call for more details!

Pick of the 2016 Bull Calves
When Bryan pulled his note book out at the end of the herd tour, it looked like there was enough numbers wrote down to have the “second once every decade dispersal.”All kidding aside, he really felt that we should offer the pick of the bull calves. We have kept a fairly low profile on our bull sales as we have a tremendous commercial customer base that supports us at a level we are very happy with. Typically we market the top end bulls at over $10,000 and appreciate their support year after year. This year we will open the door to the pen at Red Round-up; there is some very nice choices in there. As I mentioned in Lot 60C’s comments, she will have 3 siblings in the pen that will be very interesting. Check out the 80lb Pinnacle son (ABS Conquest son
that stands out also). The winning bidder will want to look up the GBB Dividend 42A sons. He is doing a remarkable job for us. He has so much right about himself, solid footed bull that is maturing with a 44+ cm scrotal development. His smooth yet powerful profile is set off by his deep red color that transmits to his progeny. Red Hamco Makin Hay 43B’s first set of calves are here and making an impression. He was the high seller at Hamco’s that year and with his EPD’s at BW -2.6 WW 66 YW 111 CE +72 puts him in the top 10% of the breed for these numbers. The winning bidder will have until Jan 31, 2017 to make their selection. We will be keeping a full 1/3 interest in the chosen calf.

Pick of the 2017 Signature 295B x Blackbird 6125S calves
Pick a bull, or pick a heifer! Its a win-win whatever you choose. Last years Red Round-up high selling lot, Blackbird 6125S, matched up with one of the most talked about bulls in the last couple of years, Signature 295B. Blackbird is an exquisite brood matron with extreme capacity, a gorgeous front end, exceptional udder, and strong foot, just to mention a few. Signature is an extraordinary bull that might just lead the Red Angus breed to new levels. He is that rare combination of power and performance, with remarkable phenotype and structure. His semen averaged over $600 last fall. Calves from this cross will be born approx. Jan 1st. Just imagine the possibilities!

Pick of the Herd
It is truly our honor and privilege to be able to share our passion with you at Red Round-up. The Vikse Family farm was established in 1902 by my Great grandfather and is proud of its 6 generations. Tracee’s family farm is a mile and a half away and was established in 1906. I wonder what our forefathers would say with all these little cowboys and cowgirls running around. We are excited and nervous about what we are offering here today. To be able to come into our herd and have your total pick of the mother cows I believe is a real opportunity. You will see Smokin Jo daughters, Fully Loaded daughters, Wild card, Game

High Caliber was the high selling bull in Canada at $115 000 and we own him with some incredible people. Sunberry Farm, Diamond T and Six Mile Angus. There was very limited semen used on this bull this spring and will be held very close next year as well. We are really pumped about this opportunity at working with the new owners and making a mark in Red Round-up History.

Reba 49W was a Red Round-up graduate in 2009. As a lot of heifer calves are in the magnificent Red Round-up line up of calendar females – she was a hidden jewel! She produced a $8000 sale topper heifer for JK in Missouri to Rhodes in 2013 and a herd bull for OTM/Brylor/EBY in Kansas. In September 2016 at the Mayhem sale in Emporia, her ET daughter is Lot #1 and she is pretty steamy!! When Reba sold for ½ interest to Blairs’ in 2014 for $13,500 US, Kevin Blair and Kent also took her yearling daughter at $9500 US. Maybe with Blairs’ as part owners on 49W you could suggest using a bull of theirs called Signature? I’m sure anything is possible if the dollars are right! CONSIGNED BY ON THE MARK CATTLE CO.

230U is an ET product herself from the breeds all time milk bull New Trend 22D and the $50 000 ½ interest Essence 42G (Agribition Supreme Champion in 1999). 230U is a maternal sister to Thump 2T, the $31 000 Red Round-up 2007 high selling bull. Last years’ 2nd high selling female at Red Round-up at 2015 at $14 500 (1/2 interest) to Robert New in Indiana. She is a full sister to Eberle 50Y now at Bar 4A. Her son was the $57 500.00 Red Brylor Red Kodiak 3A bull to Sunberry Valley and now at Wraz. Genesis was the 2015 US National Grand Champion bull at the NILE and also went on to be the Reserve Grand Champion bull in Denver 2016. He is a son of Evolution out of a Norseman King sired cow from the fabled Abigrace cow family. This should be quite the matchup of popular genetics!!

An amazing set of frozen embryos that are full sibs to last years’ high selling female at Red Roundup 2015. Lady Trooper 4B sold for $14 000 to Rob Brawner (Bullis Creek) in Nebraska. The Roughrider progeny have been awesome and his semen is very rare (see the twenty doses selling as Lot 87 here tonight at Red Round-up 2016). Lady Trooper 114Z was the Red Round-up topping heifer in 2013 at $26 500 to Brylor and then later that fall went on to be named the Canadian Show Female of the year. Lots of RRup history here in this frozen pkg of embryos.

If you have anything to do with the Red Angus breed you will have had to have seen the impact that the Lakme 70M cow has had on the breed. She has been a highlight in the Brylor LAKME 70M, full sister to embryos program for the past number of years. She is the dam to Lakme 204S, Canadian Angus Show Female of the year in 2009; Black Kodiak 204Y, sire of Red Kodiak 3A; Pasquale 213P, sire of Eberle; and many other numerous greats that have impacted the breed. It has been said that she is the best daughter of New Trend 22D, which is a very bold statement with the number of great New Trend daughters the breed has seen. 70M has had a major impact on the breed to say the least, and these embryos will be full sibs (by blood)! Not very often does a person get an opportunity to purchase genetics with this much potential and breed changing history behind it.

Red Round-up...even the words give me a shiver up my back and makes my hair stand up a bit. Well, I don’t have much but what’s here jacks me right up! The embryo’s we are offering are out of one of the most prestigious cows in our herd. Last year her bull calf was lot 1 in our bull sale and had a ton of friends on sale day. 162x really passes on her muscle mass and volume with an absolutely perfect udder. It really shows in her progeny as her daughter was Club Champion and district Supreme Champion Female. At Farmfair, she was shown again by Shana Lee Fankhanel, where she was the Junior Supreme Champion Female. Now the exciting part – the sire of these embryos is none other than Red Six Mile High Caliber 177C. High Caliber brings pedigree, performance, phenotype and maternal merit all together into an impressive resume. High Caliber is the high selling bull calf in Canada for $115,000 and is sired by the Taurus, the two time and reigning Denver Stock Show Grand Champion bull.

High Caliber will be shown this fall and we are very excited about our new herd sire. We own High Caliber with Diamond T, Sunberry Farms and Six Mile. We are only selling 200 units of semen for the upcoming breeding season so this is an opportunity I feel has outstanding potential. Daughter of AMBER RUBY 162X

Here is a cow with a strong maternal family. We purchased Leah at the Glesbar dispersal last winter. We couldn’t be more happy with what she has brought and will continue to bring to our farm. She has had an excellent show career, obtaining many accomplishments such as 2010 CAA Red Angus Show Female of the Year. She raised Red DMM Glesbar Barndance 35X. Matched up with any of these 3 bulls will create some great and exciting progeny, that will be stylish with power and performance. CONSIGNED BY GOLDEN SUNSET RANCH

We will once again have on offer 20 units of Ghostrider semen selling in 2 packages of 10 units each. He is deceased so his semen is definitely limited. There will be a maximum of 80 units selling in Canada this year. His progeny both male and female have impressive hair coats and well above average temperament. We have a group of first calf daughters with very impressive udders that have produced well beyond expectations. His sons have tons of muscle and convert feed into red meat like no other sire group we have found to date. Don’t miss out on this opportunity!

A unique opportunity to access powerful outcross red genetics from the proven SAV Harvestor 0338, a bull I would recommend for adding real beef value and performance. Harvestor 103C is the planets first red grandson that sold in our spring sale at $57500 for 2/3 interest. He went on to breed 40 cows naturally for Andrew Johnson at Sandhill Red Angus. He came off pasture in great condition. He has true herd bull presence and profile and equally impressive actual data, EPD's and carcass merit. He is built right from the ground up. His dam, Cadence 141Y is quickly becoming a top cow in our herd. Flawless phenotype, true breeding value and versatility.

Incredibly rare semen just cleared the border after exhaustive efforts on the many parties involved, just to get it up here into Canada! Let me tell you though… it’s worth all the hassle when you see his progeny – they are excellent cattle! Last years’ high selling heifer was a Roughrider daughter and the very popular AI bull at Biebers’ and Brylor Semen Sales called Roosevelt is a son (Roosevelt also sired Rollin Deep). The Roughrider son at Frasers’ in Manitoba has been spectacular too. Take advantage of timeless, proven, accepted genetics here.

A very popular bull in Red Roundup 2015, so we've decided this will be the only venue Mr. Forbidden is released at in Canada. He’s a serious candidate for the best son of the two time Farmfair and Agribition Grand Champion bull, Mulberry. Forbidden’s dam, the famous Cita cow had two daughters sell as heifer calves in the Wildcat dispersal at $15,000 & $12,000 last fall. Cita herself had a flush sell in Denver 2016 at $20,000. He’s not available on the open market in Canada.

When you combine his unrivaled herd bull mass, phenomenal hip shape, dark cherry red colour and super sound skeleton with one of the breeds most phenotypically correct "CAA Elite" cows as his dam, you have a product that will have a lasting impact in our Red Angus fraternity. High Caliber 177C has been admired all year by some of North Americas most reputable cattleman for being so unique to our breed. High Caliber's partners are limiting access to his genetics with only 100 straws selling in Canada through the 2017 breeding season. The last 100 straws of semen to sell in Canada until Jan. 1, 2018 (50 at RRup and 50 at Agribition in Masterpiece sale). Semen sells as 5 packages of 10 units each.
Since topping the Denver 2015 sale at $55,000 US, he has been incredibly popular all over the world because of the explosive growth and profitability of his progeny. His very first daughters were named Grand Champion pen of 3 heifers at Denver in 2014 and one topped the sale at $11,000 US. A daughter topped Agribition 2014 sale at $24,000 as well. Now for the biggest feat a bull can have happen…his 1st daughters have jumped his milk number up to a +19! That’s over double from last year! His sons have been excellent too. They topped Brylor's 2015 bull sale at $55,000 and Bar 4A’s 2016 bull sale at $15 000. A son was named the futurity champion bull at the 2015 Mayhem event in Kansas and sold for $9250. Red Badlands opportunity is still the #1 bull in the breed for WWT and YWT and he doesn't appear to be losing any steam anytime soon!

The mother of the CAA 2014 Show Bull of the Year. She is designated an Elite Dam and has produced the top bull calf 4 years in a row. At 8 years of age she looks to be continuing this tradition for many years to come. We are delighted to be allowed to bring Long Fellow to Red Round-up for our fellow breeders evaluation.

We are very happy with the progeny both male and female from this guy’s sire Big Rock 121Y. (A daughter WRAZ 12D is also a selection for this sale). Red WRAZ Big Rock 7D hit the ground easily at 71lbs and never looked back. He is structurally very complete with plenty of muscle and shape for this level of calving ease. His young dam Skija 67A has an impressive udder with plenty of milk and this will not be the last time you hear about her!

Cowboy Cut 605D has impressed us from the day he hit the ground running and hasn’t stopped. He has done phenomenal as a calf with his birth weight of 97 lb. and wean weight of 762 lb. on July 26th straight off grass and moms milk with no supplemental feeding. His length, build and growth will put pounds on the calves and the heifers will want to be retained in herd. This calf keeps impressing us with his growth of only 1 month and weaning to boot weighed in at 846 lbs on Aug 22. His Dam RSTD 575X was purchased out of the Ringstead Ranch Dispersal and is one of our heaviest milking mamma cows with such a nice personality. She has always been AI’d and has never missed on her first cycle. She has consistently weaned off the heaviest bull calf and heifer calves each year. We currently have currently retained 3 of her daughters in our herd and each one has done an awesome job on their calves. 605D’s sire needs no introduction as Red Lazy MC Cowboy Cut 26U out of the Lazy MC herd.

Spunk has a very special place for us after losing his sire this spring during breeding. The Bazinga calves have flat out left us speechless after his first calf crop. The females are some of the deepest, soggiest, performance based females that we have ever had. The bull calves are all consistent in their quality with big tops and spring of rib. We believe that we found a combination that is hard to find with these Bazinga calves, having calving ease and short gestation and the calves grow and perform. Spunk’s dam is what really has use excited about him; his dam stems back to the breed legend Boomer 803B and is from the great Thelma cow line. A maternal sister to Spunk is working in the Collier Diamond C herd in Texas. At just a 77lb birth weight, Spunk will be a calving ease sire that will add performance to his calf crop.

We believe Canadian Red Round-up to be the most prestigious red angus event in North America, and what better way to celebrate being a part of this great event than by showcasing some of our very best genetics. Red Shiloh desert storm 22D has already proven himself in the show ring, achieving the title of champion angus bull calf at the 2016 IPE in armstrong, BC. Competing against some of the top black and red Angus genetics in Canada. His dam, Red Shiloh Widget 42w (SCCA 42w) has acquired Elite/Premier dam status. She is a sure footed, well balanced female with an outstanding udder. Her calving ease and milk epd’s are extraordinary, placing her in the top 1% of the breed average. Red Shiloh Desert Storm’s sire, Red Wildman Chuck Norris 012x, has a demanding presence with the performance to match, producing high performance, powerful progeny that always rise to the top of the calf crop, including Red Shiloh Centerfold 5C, the reserve champion senior heifer calf at the 2015 Canadian national angus show. Desert storm 22D is bound to make a positive impact in any breeding program, and we are looking forward to seeing the powerful and promising herd sire he is sure to become.

Interceptor is a calf that has stood out since day one. This calf has been masculine and bully from the word go and has grown and matured at an incredible rate. His best asset may be that he carries an extra rib’s worth of length in his side, and follows through to a massive hip, without sacrificing in his shoulders or his flanks. His mother is a beautiful dark cherry red cow who has a great udder and eye appeal. 30D is an outcross to our program, and we are very much looking forward to seeing what type of a future impact he can have in the program.

Encarnacion has been a stand out right from the time that he was born. He is a full brother to Chattahoochee that was Senior Bull Calf Champion at Farmfair and sold to Red Moon Angus. The dam 3U is a donor dam for us; we have a set of Bazinga heifer calves that will highlight our replacement heifer pen out of her. Encarnacion is full of solid red meat and has as much muscle expression in any calf his age I have seen. Just like the Blue Jay’s slugger that he is named after he will be sure to hit it out of the park with his calves.

Deuce has been a stand out since birth as you have to appreciate his length of spine and width and depth of muscling through the hind quarters. 41D is very clean through the front end and from the side profile has a lot of eye appeal. King Pin is a calf we are very excited about. He comes out of a solid little Mystified daughter who has been working great for us. His sire, JJL Big Deal 58Z has been an outstanding herd sire for us. His females have perfect udders, sound feet and are deep sided. His bull calves has consistently been low birthweights, and have not given up at all in eye appeal and style. We are excited about King Pin, because we think he packs all of his sire’s positive points, and throws in extra capacity on his barrel, and goes through to a massive hind quarter. Every time we look at 29D, he seems to bring more to the table. His testicular development is also exceptional. We look forward to seeing this calf mature out, and we hope he continues to excel. 44th Annual Canadian Red Round-up

The next several years were spent building a commercial cow/ calf operation that saw them retain all of the calves, grass them and feed them to finish. When Phil graduated from post secondary education in Saskatoon where he obtained his Ag Machinery Technology Certificate, he returned to the farm and from there the cow herd doubled over the next few years.
Purebred Breeder of the Year
WRAZ RED ANGUS Phil & Lana Birnie
E
stablished in 1907, Phil and Lana Birnie and their children Rueben, Azaria, Hannah and Kassandra are the 4th generation of Birnie’s to reside on and operate the Birnie Century Family Farm. Located 5 miles East of Wawota in the southeast corner of Saskatchewan, WRAZ Red Angus has grown into a purebred operation of 280 head from its humble beginnings which began with Phil’s Grandfather and his small herd of purebred Herefords as well as a small herd of cows they milked daily. When Phil’s Grandfather passed away suddenly in 1967, Phil’s parents, William and Leona took over the farm. Things were very tough and the only thing that pulled them through were the cream cheques from the cows, some of which can still be found tucked away in sealer jars. William realized there needed to be a change so the decision was made to run the herd as a commercial beef operation and retain the small herd of purebred Herefords. Over the next few years other options were explored to increase income and expand the cowherd. One of which came up after William made a trip to the Denver Stock Show. While in Denver he came across “some real good red cattle” which were on display from Beckton Ranch from Sheridan, Wyoming. Beckton’s had a string of Red Angus cattle there as well as exhibited the winning carload of crossbred steers and heifers for the sixth year in a row which were Red Angus/Hereford cross. William thought that looked like a good cross for the Hereford cattle back home so he wrote a letter to Sally Forbes, owner of Beckton Ranch, with a plan and a budget to import a few open purebred Red Angus heifers and a registered Red Angus bull. His intent was to start a registered Red Angus herd at home and use that same bull to crossbreed the Herefords to. Phil still has the letters along with the information Sally had mailed back to his Dad in 1968. William’s plan was a good one until they received word from Agriculture Canada that the Canadian Aberdeen Angus Association would not register the Red Angus cattle in Canada so that was the end of the plan to import the American cattle.
69
44th Annual Canadian Red Round-up
The commercial cowherd had always been bred Red Angus as they felt the end product of having the red hide was more flexible in the market. In 2005 when Phil went to purchase a bull from a small Red Angus breeder who was moving into town and selling his herd, Phil got thinking on his way home what was going to happen to those purebred cows? He decided to call the owner back and ask. He ended up not only buying the bull he originally had gone to buy but also 18 females and so began WRAZ Red Angus. In 2007, 30-35 head were purchased from the KMAC Dispersal and a few more females were gathered up along the way from several other breeders. At the time, Phil wanted his cowherd to be half commercials and half purebreds but realized calving from February to April could be detrimental to his health so the decision was made to sell the commercials and focus strictly on raising purebreds. In a relatively short period of time, the WRAZ Red Angus herd has grown to 280 head and will see them host their first female sale this year. The Pride of the Prairies Female Sale will be held December 10, 2016 in Saskatoon which will offer 60 females with their sale partners KenRay Ranch. The only other females to be sold by WRAZ this year will be in the Red Round Up sale. Along with hosting their first female sale this year, 2016 also marked WRAZ’s 8th annual Cornerstone Bull Sale which is held the third Saturday of April at the Whitewood Auction Mart along with Brimner Cattle Co. WRAZ took over the Cornerstone bull sale after KMAC dispersed their herd and offered the annual bull sale to them after being volume buyer at the sale. Phil is very hands on with the entire WRAZ operation. Their land base of 2400 acres produces the feed they require for the cattle, provides enough pasture for the herd, as well as provides 200-300 acres of cash crop. They have a full time herdsman, Gordon Murray, who oversees the cattle and works on every aspect of the farm. Phil is very passionate about what he does. “The cattle have always been the most important part of the farm. I’m doing this to raise bulls that work in the commercial industry and raise females that will last for 18 years. We have ‘J’ cows that are still producing.” Keeping his commercial customers happy is very important and something he doesn’t take for granted. “The whole show thing is good and has its place, we’ve done it in the past but now we like to display cattle in the yards at Agribition.” You can find WRAZ bulls in bull pen ally and a pen or two of females there as well. “Our commercial cattle guys like that.” He also realizes the importance of bringing in new genetics. “We don’t AI a whole lot, I would just as soon walk a bull if I can.” The herd has gotten to a point where most of the cows are WRAZ genetics and they are using their own bulls. Phil speaks very highly of a bull he had purchased named Ghostrider. “To the day I die I’ll be wishing I still had him. The Ghostrider sons sell really well and we have a son we are keeping.” From humble beginnings to now having a well known, established herd of 280 head of purebred Red Angus cattle, the future looks bright for Phil and Lana Birnie and the WRAZ operation. Phil passion for the Red Angus breed will lead them into the future for years to come. Congratulations to WRAZ Red Angus, Phil and Lana Birnie and family for being recognized as the 2016 Canadian Red Angus Promotion Society Purebred Breeder of the Year.

While Larry and Lorna are both still very involved in the farm, they are also very active members of their community where both of them have received Volunteer of the Year awards. Marvin and Robert are the second generation on the Garnier family farm. A total of 45 quarters of land are owned and rented by the Garnier’s of which 3500 acres are seeded to grain. The remainder of the land is pasture along with 140 acres which is seeded to corn and then fenced into paddocks for winter grazing. Each year 150 pairs are taken to the St. Paul Community Grazing Reserve for summer grazing. Marvin prefers grazing the cows on the corn rather than regular swath grazing which they also do. Although the corn is more expensive to grow, he feels the cows do better on it over the winter. The cows remain out on the fields until they start calving in February and are not fed grain until they are moved in. The 450 head herd of 50 percent Red Angus based females calve between February 15 and April with well over half of them being done by March. Marvin feels the Red Angus based cows go into calving season in better condition after swath grazing than the Simmental cross females do. “The Red Angus females are easy keeping and easy doing on swath grazing” he stated. Approximately 10 years ago the Garnier’s switched to using Red Angus on their cowherd and Marvin feels this was a very worthwhile change. “Our calves wean off consistently by the 10th of November each year averaging 800 pounds after shrink.” This is the same for the Red Angus based calves as well as the Simmental calves. 75 percent of the Garnier steer calves are marketed through DLMS (Direct Livestock Marketing Systems) with the remaining ones going through their local auction mart. Some of the heifer calves are kept until February

when they choose the ones they wish to retain for replacements in their own herd and then approximately 40 are sold to a customer near Stettler who has been buying from them for several years and who always wants more. A premium is received for the heifers due to their high quality. When selecting bulls to be used on their cowherd, Marvin puts emphasis on calving ease and performance. He is not afraid of higher birth weights on his calves as this usually equates to higher weights at weaning time. He looks for smaller framed, deep bulls to breed his cows to with performance. He will ask questions about calving ease and performance on a bull before asking what the bull looks like. They purchase their bulls privately from Goad Family Angus and have done so for several years. Marvin stated “they know our operation and what type of bulls we are looking for. Often they will have a bull picked out for us before we even come and look because they know what we want.” Two yearling bulls are purchased each year. The bulls are turned out for one cycle with the cows and then taken out. Marvin feels it’s very important to not be too hard on bulls and over use them the first year or they won’t last as long as they should. Marvin and Tara’s four children Logan, Alexis, Rylan and Alivia represent the 3rd generation on the Garnier farm. All are very involved in showing their home raised steers in 4-H. They choose the Red Angus calves over other breeds because of their temperament, eye appeal and ability to gain. Marvin maintains the Red Angus breed provides what their operation is looking for: easy keeping, easy doing, high performing cattle where pounds on calves at weaning time matters. 44th Annual Canadian Red Round-up
