The Spirit of Boulder
2011-2012 SEASON
MICHAEL BUT TERMAN, MUSIC DIREC TOR
Dear friends, There is something special about Colorado and about Boulder in particular. Anyone who lives here or who has ever visited knows it. As your hometown professional orchestra, we strive to embrace and reflect all that makes Boulder so unique: its beauty, sense of adventure and embracing of discovery and innovation. In celebration of our great community, we are thrilled to share with you our 54th season—The Spirit of Boulder. We have plenty of well-loved classics. In September, we honor the 100th anniversary of the passing of Gustav Mahler with a performance of his colossal Symphony No. 1— perhaps the greatest “first symphony” ever written. Later in the season, we’ll hear Gershwin’s An American in Paris and Schubert’s “Great” C Major, along with Beethoven’s dazzling Seventh and Brahms’s famous Double Concerto. Speaking of classics…back by popular demand is the fabulous Classical Mystery Tour, bringing original Beatles orchestrations to life. Along with the familiar, we’ll introduce you to sensational works like the jazzy Cello Concerto by Friedrich Gulda, Hanson’s cinematic “Romantic” Symphony, and the world premiere of Boulder Sensations by local favorite Rony Barrak on the tabla. We’ll also welcome Rony as a soloist, along with beatboxer extraordinaire, Shodekeh. We have pianists Hsing-ay Hsu (from the CU faculty) and Avery Fisher Career Grant winner Benjamin Hochman, cello phenom (and TED Fellow) Joshua Roman and to close our season…wait for it…the Takács Quartet! We’re pleased to continue our collaboration with Boulder Ballet in our annual Nutcracker performances and to expand our regional presence with concerts in Lakewood, Highlands Ranch and at the prestigious Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek. And we’ll once again present our annual Discovery Concerts for area elementary school students. At the Boulder Phil, we believe in the importance of connections: between us and our community, and especially the connection between you and this miraculous art form called music. Each concert is designed to help spark and strengthen that connection with experiences that touch both the heart and the mind. We thank you for being part of the excitement of The Spirit of Boulder this season and look forward to our journey of discovery together.
