The Spirit of Boulder 2 0 1 2 - 2 0 1 3 S E AS ON

Dear friends, The Boulder Phil is in the connections business, and nothing is more important to us than the bond between our orchestra and our unique hometown. While reflecting The Spirit of Boulder and blending time-tested masterpieces with new discoveries, our audience has grown by 40 percent in the past three seasons. Building on this momentum, our 55th season offers a host of delights both familiar and fresh. Along with well-loved music from Tchaikovsky, Brahms and Sibelius, we’ll enjoy a sizzling work from CU composer Jeff Nytch, hear New Orleans hot jazz from trumpet phenom Byron Stripling, explore arctic inspiration with Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara and examine life’s journey through Richard Danielpour’s setting of poetry by Maya Angelou. We have much-anticipated returns, as well. On Opening Night ,we’ll welcome back a hometown favorite, the brilliant pianist Christopher Taylor. We’ll once again kick off the holiday season with the Boulder Ballet in our annual performances of The Nutcracker. January marks the return of one of the world’s preeminent violinists—Sarah Chang—as she performs with the orchestra with whom she made her professional debut. The Boulder Chorale joins us for two performances of Brahms’ moving Requiem in February. And in March, we’ll enjoy the high-energy thrills of Cirque de la Symphonie, sure to be popular again this year. The Boulder Phil is honored to have been invited to perform at the prestigious Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek for the second year in a row this February, and our expanded regional presence includes a return performance in Highlands Ranch as well. Our annual Discovery Concerts, performed at Macky and in Adams and Arapahoe Counties, will introduce elementary students to the magic of live symphonic music. And we’ll once again partner with the Parlando School for the Arts to present our annual Young Artists Concerto Competition. At the Boulder Phil, we believe in the importance of connections: between us and our community, yes, but especially the connection between you and this miraculous art form called music. Each concert is designed to help spark and strengthen that connection with experiences that touch both the heart and the mind. We thank you for being part of the excitement of The Spirit of Boulder this season and look forward to our journey of discovery together. Enjoy!

Our season launches with the highspirited and rousing Acclamations by CU composer Jeffrey Nytch. Beautiful and blazing, Prokofiev’s popular Third Piano Concerto, played by Boulder native CHRISTOPHER TAYLOR, is a tour de force, combining incredible technical demands with heartfelt lyricism.

Tchaikovsky’s magnificent Fourth Symphony dramatized the composer’s struggle with destiny. The opening “fate” motive sweeps us along through twists and turns, ultimately leading to one of the most exhilarating codas in all of music. TRIUMPHANT RETURNS SARAH CHANG, VIOLIN SATURDAY, JAN. 12—7:30 PM Macky Auditorium, CU Campus Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra Michael Butterman, Music Director BARBER Violin Concerto BRUCKNER Symphony No. 4, “Romantic”

“Her gifts are at a level so removed from the rest of us that all we can do is feel the appropriate awe and then wonder on the mysteries of nature.” ~The New York Times

EVENT OF NOTE FRIDAY, JAN. 11 Winter Intermezzo with violinist Sarah Chang

SARAH CHANG, one of the most acclaimed violin soloists in the world, makes her return to the Boulder Phil, the orchestra that helped launch her career before her debut in 1989 with the New York Philharmonic at age 8. In this evening full of Romanticism, we have Samuel Barber’s gorgeous Violin Concerto, composed in an emotional and melodic style, but with plenty of virtuoso fireworks (the perpetual-motion finale was deemed “unplayable” by the concerto’s dedicatee). The concert concludes with the “Romantic” Symphony No. 4 of Anton Bruckner, whose music is moving and affecting, and emanates from devout religiosity. photo: Colin Bell

THE BEAUTY OF LIFE ANGELA BROWN, SOPRANO PATRICK MASON, BARITONE BOULDER CHORALE SATURDAY, FEB. 23—7:30 PM Macky Auditorium, CU Campus SUNDAY, FEB. 24—6:30 PM Vilar Performing Arts Center, Beaver Creek Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra Michael Butterman, Music Director DANIELPOUR A Woman’s Life BRAHMS A German Requiem

“There is one and only one who will give the air from his failing lungs for my body’s mend. And that one is my love.” ~Maya Angelou from ‘Many and More,’ A Woman’s Life

For Brahms, contemplating existence and the finiteness of earthly life led him to compose this most “human” of requiems, which will feature CU baritone PATRICK MASON and the BOULDER CHORALE. An equally poignant reflection on life is presented in Danielpour’s A Woman’s Life—a deeply moving song cycle of poems by Maya Angelou. Written for our evening’s soloist, noted Metropolitan Opera soprano ANGELA BROWN, this work explores the stages of life through the eyes of an African-American woman. photo: Rony Eli

CIRQUE DE LA SYMPHONIE SATURDAY, MAR. 23 7:30 PM Macky Auditorium CU Campus

“World-class performers achieved the seemingly impossible” “Jaw-dropping...a well-deserved standing ovation” “A breath-taking display of agility and incomparable beauty”

The magic of the circus returns with fresh, new acts by aerial fliers, acrobats, jugglers and contortionists sharing the stage with the Boulder Phil. This was a sold-out event when Cirque de la Symphonie last came to Boulder. Adults and children alike enjoy this entertainment extravaganza featuring high-energy music by Dvořák, Rimsky-Korsakov, John Williams and more.

SEASON FINALE: LAND OF THE MIDNIGHT SUN JENNIFER KOH, VIOLIN SATURDAY, APR. 27—7:30 PM Macky Auditorium, CU Campus SUNDAY, APR. 28, 2013—3 PM St. Luke’s Methodist Church, Highlands Ranch Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra Michael Butterman, Music Director

DEBUSSY

Prelude to “The Afternoon of a Faun” RAUTAVAARA Cantus Arcticus SIBELIUS Finlandia STRAVINSKY Four Norwegian Moods SIBELIUS Violin Concerto

For our finale, we bring you music inspired by Scandinavia, “Land of the Midnight Sun”—from the national pride of Finlandia to the melancholy folk melodies of Stravinsky’s Four Norwegian Moods and Cantus Arcticus with its use of recorded birdsong and sense of wide-open spaces. We close with JENNIFER KOH and the Sibelius Violin Concerto, a major concerto played by a major talent on today’s classical scene.

“Jennifer Koh is a risk-taking, high-octane player of the kind who grabs the listener by the ears and refuses to let go.” ~The Strad

Students attend a 50-minute performance designed to support and coordinate with their core curriculum. During 2011- 2012, for the first time we brought our Discovery Concert program to the grand space of Macky Auditorium, creating a wonderful field trip experience for students from nine local schools in the area. Our next Discovery Concert is on April 26, 2013, at Macky. We are also delighted to be taking the program on the road to Englewood in Fall 2012.
