Sat., September 17 - 7:30 PM at Macky J.S. BACH MAHLER
Revel in the purity and complexity of one of Bach’s greatest concertos (originally written for harpsichord), performed by the versatile and brilliant Boulder-based pianist Hsing-Ay Hsu. Then celebrate the 150th anniversary of Gustav Mahler’s birth with his titanic Symphony No. 1—perhaps the greatest “first symphony” ever written. Mahler’s immense orchestra delivers both intimacy and overwhelming power. HSING-AY HSU

Lebanese percussionist Rony Barrak and beatboxer Shodekeh have wowed audiences at Boulder’s annual Conference on World Affairs. They’ll be featured in two world premieres, one written by Rony Barrak to honor Boulder and the second by Ruby Fulton to feature Shodekeh’s unique vocal talents. The pulses of the evening culminate in Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony, a work Liszt dubbed “The Apotheosis of Rhythm.”
Sat., April 21 - 7:30 PM at Macky
Indulge your senses with an evening of lush music infused BENJAMIN HOCHMAN with the spirit of France. We open with Satie’s familiar photo: J. Henry Fair Gymnopédies and the colorful and cinematic “Romantic” Symphony by Howard Hanson. The spirit of American jazz animates Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G featuring Benjamin Hochman, recipient of a 2011 Avery Fisher Career Grant. Gershwin’s ever-popular An American in Paris evokes the sights and energy of the French capital in the 1920s.

Concerto No. 1 in d minor Symphony No. 1, “Titan”
Jazz Suite No. 1 Cello Concerto Symphony No. 9, “The Great”
Experience Shostakovich as you may not have heard him before—jazzy and lighthearted. Friedrich Gulda’s eclectic and virtuosic Cello Concerto will be played by star cellist Joshua Roman, recently named a TED Fellow, part of the global conference on innovation. The concert concludes with Schubert’s magnum opus, the “Great C Major.”
Introduction and Allegro Concerto for Viola Romance for Viola and Orchestra Concerto for Violin and Cello
How lucky we are that the Takács Quartet, one TAKÁCS QUARTET photo: Ellen Appel of the world’s premier chamber ensembles, is based here in Boulder. We celebrate these amazing musicians through one of the few works for string quartet and orchestra, Elgar’s Introduction and Allegro. After they play together, we’ll hear them as individuals and as a duo (in the revered Double Concerto by Brahms)...a rare treat for local music lovers.
