MICHAEL BUTTERMAN, MUSIC DIRECTOR-CONDUCTOR

MICHAEL BUT TERMAN, MUSIC DIREC TOR

Michael Butterman is making his mark as a model for today’s conductors and is recognized for his commitment to creative artistry, innovative programming, and audience and community engagement. He is in his fifth season as Music Director for the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra and also for the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra, and is in his 11th season as Principal Conductor for Education and Outreach for the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the first position of its kind in the United States. Beginning with the 2009-2010 season, he assumed the additional post of Resident Conductor for the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra. The Shreveport Times recently praised Michael Butterman’s “successful risk-taking,” noting a “season full of buzzing lobbies, standing ovations and full houses,” while the Daily Camera proclaimed, “Michael Butterman was clearly No. 1 on the classical-music scene in Boulder.”

CORE ARTISTIC VALUES ARTISTRY The Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra is committed to presenting performances of the highest standard in which we make every note matter. Our musicians, conductors and staff recognize their roles as stewards of musical art and fully commit their efforts in the service of music. We commit the necessary resources of time and money to provide our performers with the best possible conditions to succeed in their efforts. INNOVATION We embrace innovation and creativity in our programs in a way that enhances the musical experience for the audience, making it stronger, deeper and more meaningful. ENGAGEMENT We foster a sense of two-way interaction with the Boulder community and our patrons. People are stimulated to listen actively and challenged to bring something of their own experience and understanding to the act of listening. People come away from our concerts feeling that they’ve heard music in a deep and personal way. We cultivate a sense of community among our audience members by facilitating opportunities for social interaction. We “interface” with multiple constituencies in our community (public schools, arts organizations, the University, “traditional” and “non-traditional” audiences). CONNECTION The Boulder Philharmonic connects people to orchestral music. We connect orchestral music to our shared human experience. We connect people to one another through orchestral music. Music transcends the bounds of time and culture. It’s worth examining historical context, but also important to find ways to demonstrate its relevance to life in the 21st century. We strive to build community through our music. CORPORATE SPONSORSHIP

If your organization strives to... • Support music and the arts in your community • Make music accessible to all • Enrich children and families • Improve the quality of cultural life in Boulder • Enhance branding and awareness ...then we would like to talk with you about partnering with the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra. This packet contains information about the Boulder Phil’s vision and services, along with the benefits received by supporting our mission.

ABOUT THE BOULDER PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA Under the vision and leadership of Music Director Michael Butterman, the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra reflects all that makes Boulder special—its creativity, spirit, beauty and quest for knowledge. Founded in 1958, the Boulder Phil is a critically acclaimed professional orchestra, presenting performances nine months out of the year and employing a core of 72 of the most highly trained musicians in Boulder County and beyond. Each season the orchestra presents a dynamic mix of masterpieces and promising new works, highlighting both accomplished and emerging guest artists with a special emphasis on Boulder’s own creative community. Over its 53-year history, the Boulder Phil has presented internationally-renowned artists such as Itzhak Perlman, Yo-Yo Ma, Jessye Norman, James Galway, Sarah Chang and many others. The Boulder Phil also features local composers like Bill Douglas and Daniel Kellogg, local guest artists like CU pianist David Korevaar and Emmynominated actor Bill Mooney, and collaborates with local groups such as the Boulder Chorale, Ars Nova Singers, Colorado Shakespeare Festival, and the Boulder Ballet in the Nutcracker. With a strong commitment to education and community outreach, the Boulder Phil provides a year-long program in Boulder County classrooms through its Discovery Concerts. In addition, individual members of the orchestra teach classes both privately and throughout the Boulder Valley School District and Parlando School for the Arts. The Boulder Phil’s impact in our community extends into other realms, with an annual food drive, an instrument drive for kids, and free family concerts at the Boulder Public Library and other Front Range venues. The orchestra also recently partnered with local social service organizations, including the Boulder Shelter for the Homeless and Boulder County AIDS Project, in a tribute to unsung community heroes featuring large-scale images of their own volunteers accompanied by Aaron Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man.

VISION The Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra reflects and fosters all that makes Boulder special—its creativity, spirit, beauty and quest for knowledge. By connecting people to orchestral music, we strive to be an essential part of our community’s cultural fabric.

CURRENT PROGRAMS

WHY SPONSOR THE BOULDER PHIL?

Each season, the Boulder Philharmonic presents five classical programs, multiple performances of our in-school Discovery Concert, four performances of the Nutcracker with the Boulder Ballet, a special production such as Cirque de la Symphonie, two summer concerts at the Arvada Center for the Arts, the SuperListening Club by Don Campbell, and a series of Family Chamber Concerts in Front Range venues.

Building on the momentum of Bravo Boulder, an exciting season of packed-hall concerts celebrating Boulder’s uniqueness, we invite you to partner with us. Local businesses sponsor the Boulder Phil for great reasons:

CLASSICAL CONCERTS feature favorite masterworks as well as engaging new works, with a focus on reflecting Colorado’s own creative community through our selection of guest artists, invited composers and collaborating organizations. Concerts take place at Macky Auditorium on the CU-Boulder campus. With the support of SCFD, some concerts are repeated at venues such as St. Luke’s Methodist Church in Highlands Ranch. DISCOVERY CONCERTS bring the grace and power of the full orchestra to 4th and 5th grade students. Teachers prepare students with a specially designed Curriculum Guide, and conductor Michael Butterman makes classroom visits to introduce students to the sights and sounds they will experience. With the support of SCFD, we are expanding this program to schools in three counties. SPECIAL PRODUCTIONS include the much-loved annual co-production of the Nutcracker with the Boulder Ballet and the Boulder Children’s Chorale (ticket sales up 5% over last year), as well as concerts celebrating the musical greats of other genres, such as John Denver and the Beatles. SUMMER CONCERTS are performed at the Arvada Center for the Arts at the outdoor amphitheater. SUPERLISTENING CLUB is a workshop presented by Don Campbell, author of The Mozart Effect. Throughout the concert season, Don Campbell also offers free pre-concert talks that begin an hour before each classical concert in order to enhance the listening experience for patrons.

The dress rehearsal performance of The Nutcracker is free to clients of various local social service organizations—approximately 1,000 people attended the 2010 dress rehearsal. FOR THE FAMILY—Nutcracker Ballets & other youth-oriented programs reflect unparalleled opportunities for parents & children to experience music together. FOR CHILDREN—Each year, thousands of students are enriched by classroom visits and concerts that show how music relates to their school curriculum and the world around them. FOR COMMUNITY VIGOR—The Boulder County regional climate for business and quality of living is stronger with the presence of the arts and creativity, traits fostered and embodied by the Boulder Phil. FOR FUN—Businesses gain loyalty from employees and clients who receive tickets to memorable concerts and events, including Boulder Phil Fanfare, our annual fall fundraising event.
