Dear friends~
Our 52nd season brings you Th e Music You Love, celebrating some of the most enduring orchestral music of all time. It’s music that deeply stirs emotions and touches the soul. And it’s music we return to again and again, because it always has more to give and more to reveal...

To kick off our 2009-2010 season, Halloween comes to life with the bewitching pairing of Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique and the scary (and hilarious) Frankenstein!! by HK Gruber—a piece that must be experienced to be believed. Then we warm up January with the “Three B’s,” featuring Beethoven’s monumental Symphony No. 5 and Brahms’ breathtaking Piano Concerto No. 1, with Boulder’s own Christopher Taylor as soloist. Celebrated violinist Jennifer Frautschi joins us for a Latin-inspired Valentine’s Day, including the seductive Symphonie espagnole and Ravel’s sultry Boléro. Long-time favorite Angela Cheng returns to Boulder to perform Chopin’s immortal Piano Concerto
No. 2 in honor of the composer’s 200th birthday. And in April, sacred and profane collide with dramatic force in Orff’s Carmina burana, as medieval meets modern in this celebration of life’s earthly delights. Our annual Nutcracker performances, along with our chamber series at the Arvada Center, pre-concert lectures and Don Campbell’s SuperListening Club, present even more opportunities to connect with Boulder’s year-round symphony orchestra. Along with pieces and artists you told us were your favorites, you’ll discover wonderful surprises, from lesser-known gems to exciting visual concert enhancements. I invite you to join us this season at historic Macky as we celebrate
Th e Music You Love.

Fright Fantastique! Friday, October 30, 2009, 7:30 p.m. Macky Auditorium, CU Campus, Boulder Michael Butterman, conductor Timothy Jones, bass-baritone HK Gruber–Frankenstein!! Th e Music You Love BBerlioz– erliioz––SSymphonie ymphon fantastique
Timothy Jones, bass-baritone
Don’t miss the scary and hilarious Frankeensteiin!! by HK Gruber. An almost indescribable mash-up of childish poetry, political allegory, cabaret parody and slapstick humor, this contemporary piece is a collection of comedic songs that expands the orchestra through the use of toy instruments, popping paper bags and whirling hoses. This unusual piece had its US premiere at Tanglewood and has been performed hundreds of times around the world. So Solooisist Timothy Jones will engage you with a dramatic singing role that channels both heroes and villains (James Bond, Goldfinger, Dracula, John Wayne, Batman and Robin, Frankenstein, Superman and more). The bewitching Symphoniee fantaastique by Hector Berlioz, a tour de force for orchestra and conductor, is perhaps the most forward-looking symphonic piece of all time. Its incredible orchestral details (using E-flat clarinet, four bassoons, two tubas, and two sets of timpani playing chords) were completely novel. With a macabre connection in the last two movements–including a march to the scaffold and a dream of a witches’ sabbath–plus ghoulish, cackling witch laughter in the last movement, it’s a perfect complement to the spooky Halloween weekend.
HK Gruber’s ‘Frankenstein!!’ proves classics don’t have to be so serious... With a wicked and naughty sense of humor...‘Frankenstein!!’ is a three-ring circus of a piece, a song-cycle monster mash.” ~San Jose Mercury News

Three B’s-Bach, Beethoven, Brahms Saturday, January 23, 2010, 7:30 p.m. Bach–Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 Beethoven–Symphony No. 5 Th e Music You Love
Brahms–Piano Concerto No. 1 The Three B's really do have a connection through the use of motive. Bach organically spins out a structure starting with a seminal motive. Beethoven's symphony is the first to use trombones and incorporates the famous shortshort-short-long rhythmic motive to connect all movements into an organic whole. Brahms' style
Macky Auditorium, CU Campus, Boulder Michael Butterman, conductor Christopher Taylor, piano
is all about motive and development. He labored under the shadow of Beethoven and what was expected of him, and his first piano concerto was an attempt to write a symphony that morphed into something else. Piano and orchestra are equal partners in this piece–not just a solo feature with orchestral "accompaniment." Boulder’s own Christopher Taylor, the 1993 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition bronze medalist, is the soloist.
This evening features video enhancement for a more intimate concert experience.

Valentine Espagnole Sunday, February 14, 2010, 7:30 p.m. Macky Auditorium, CU Campus, Boulder Michael Butterman, conductor Jennifer Frautschi, violin Rimsky-Korsakov–Capriccio espagnol Lalo–Symphonie espagnole Ravel–Rhapsodie espagnole Ravel–Boléro Th e Music You Love
Latin, sultry, seductive...these works highlight Spanish influences in music written by French and Russian composers. Symphonie espagnole is neither a symphony nor a concerto, but somewhere in between. And it’s a great showpiece for virtuoso violinist Jennifer Frautschi. An example of early minimalism, Ravel’s Boléro is one huge crescendo, building in intensity for 13 minutes.

Angela and Chopin Wednesday, March 17, 2010, 7:30 p.m. Macky Auditorium, CU Campus, Boulder Michael Butterman, conductor Angela Cheng, piano Th e Music You Love Panufnik–Hommage à Chopin Chopin–Piano Concerto No. 2 in f minor Bizet–Symphony in C Major Angela Cheng, piano
We celebrate the 200th anniversary of Chopin’s birth with a musical homage to this ambitious composer written by Panufnik, a Polish composer, and Chopin’s second piano concerto. Chopin wrote this youthful concerto, to be performed by longtime Boulder favorite Angela Cheng, when he was 20 years old. Bizet’s symphony is a student work, written when he was only 17! Unpublished, unknown and not performed until the 1930s, this piece by the man who wrote the famous opera Carmen is a lively, tuneful, charming work that will be recognizable to many.

Carmina Burana Season Finale Saturday, April 24, 2010, 7:30 p.m. Macky Auditorium, CU Campus, Boulder Michael Butterman, conductor Boulder Chorale Timothy Snyder, chorus master
O Fortuna!
Daniel Kellogg–Rush Theofanidis–Rainbow Body Orff–Carmina burana Th e Music You Love Rush, by CU assistant professorr Daniel Kellogg, is a high-energy opener to our season finale concert. Christopher Theofanidis’ Rainbow Body provides a sublime meditation based on a chant by Hildegard von Bingen, a medieval mystic. Carmina burana’s text celebrates the earthly pleasures of wine, food and sex...while the music captivates us with primal chants and insistent, repetitive rhythms. A big production, this concert features a large orchestra and chorus, a children’s chorus, and soprano Mary Wilson, tenor William Parsons, and baritone Dennis Jesse as soloists. As originally conceived by Carl Orff, this powerful piece will be accompanied by “magical images,” featuring works by Boulder artists.
