s we go to press with our annual Gift Guide, we at Boulder Weekly have many reasons to be thankful. In a year that saw many newspapers cut staff or close their doors, we’ve continued to grow and thrive. We’d like to think that our success is the result of hard work and the unique and relevant content we offer. But, although those are certainly key factors, they don’t tell the whole story. Boulder County is a unique place. Its residents are well educated and involved in the world around them. They demand more from a media organization than people in many other communities. They care about one another enough to support through their tax dollars one of the most organized and complete social safety nets in the country. County residents also care about their local economy, as demonstrated by their loyalty to locally owned businesses, including this newspaper. This holiday season, Boulder Weekly is doing all it can to support local, independent businesses. We kicked off our Buy Local Month last week with our “I Love Local” edition, highlighting local businesses. In that edition, we urged our readers to go online to www.BoulderWeekly.com or www.ILoveLocalBoulder. com to sign up for our I Love Local Pledge and commit to spending a certain amount of holiday gift dollars at local, independent businesses. This week, we present our annual Gift Guide, a catalogue of unique ideas for holiday gift giving. Peruse the pages to get your imagination going, and then organize your shopping around locally owned businesses. Every
dollar you spend will go back into the county’s economy, helping Boulder County thrive. On Dec. 3, we’ll present you with a guide to environmentally conscious gift giving with tips on how to celebrate the holidays in ways that minimize waste, reduce your carbon footprint and help your loved ones to live greener lives. Then on Dec. 10, we’ll bring you a host of last-minute ideas for gift-giving, along with information about where to buy those items locally. On Dec. 17, we’ll turn our focus to those who arguably enjoy the holidays most — kids. Our special Kids Gifts edition will be chock full of ideas for gifts that are educational, non-violent, gender-neutral, environmentally sound and, above all, safe. Our holiday coverage wraps up on Dec. 24 with our annual New Year’s edition, highlighting all the local New Year’s celebrations and announcing our Person of the Year for 2009. In the meantime, we want to thank you for your continued support. Happy Thanksgiving!

T
he holidays are right around the corner, and most people in these uncertain economic times are looking for ways to stretch their dollar as far as possible. And yet even with all the choices and shopping tools available to consumers today, many still lose the game when it comes to getting the best price for their gifts or even their groceries, says marketing Professor Donald Lichtenstein of the University of Colorado at Boulder Leeds School of Business. “There’s so many traps, so many problems with the way that most consumers shop,” Lichtenstein says. “Take grocery items for instance. Study after study has shown that consumers shop in a manner whereby they don’t pay attention to prices. They may shop one store over another based on a low price image, yet when you go into the store and ask them how much did you pay for such and such, they don’t know.” Retailers are well aware of this behavior and go to great lengths to get shoppers into their stores and to assure them that they are getting a good deal. The truth, Lichtenstein says, is that consumers really need to pay attention and strategize when they shop. While there are plenty of deals to be had during the holiday shopping season, finding the real values takes some work, according to must pay attention to the numerous pricing ploys that await them. Lichtenstein gives the following tips to holiday shoppers: • Shoppers should be wary of stores that offer price-match guarantees because market research has shown that retailers offering these guarantees often charge higher prices. • People planning to wait until after Christmas to make purchases should plan

carefully. Many retailers are being cautious in ordering their stock this year, meaning they have smaller inventories going into the holiday shopping season. • Shoppers should be cautious of reference price advertising — such as “was $79.95, now $49.95.” In many cases the starting prices are inflated or fictitious. • With so many stores vying for limited dollars this shopping season, people should spend a little extra time comparison shop-

ping. When grocery shopping, consumers have to be on their game if they plan to get the best deals and save real money. For example, over the years retailers often
have put their sale items at the end of the aisle so shoppers can easily see them. “Now merchants many times put higher margin items that are not on sale on these end-of-aisle displays,” Lichtenstein said. “Consumers go by and just think ‘OK, it’s on display, so it must be on sale,’ and they throw it in their shopping cart. So they end up paying a lot more than they should.” Grocery shoppers also need to strategize when they are buying sale items because stores set their prices based on a “market basket” of goods, which refers to the most common food and household items people buy in their store. For example, the bread might be on sale, but the butter is very expensive. “So consumers need to be aware that even though highly visible items are low priced, the market basket of goods might be very expensive,” he says. “I am a cherry picker. It’s generally worth it for me to go from store to store to pick up the sale items.” For those planning to cherry pick, which is especially worthwhile for nonperishable items, Lichtenstein says stockpiling is a good idea. “If you have the storage capacity, go ahead and buy a lot because stores are getting you into their store based on that good sale price,” he says. “It may not be worth it to go store to store for items unless you can stockpile.” Lichtenstein also recommends paying close attention to grocery coupons because many stores will double a coupon up to one dollar off, in many cases. Consumers can also go online and print multiple coupons for items they buy every week, often resulting in major grocery bill savings. To listen to a podcast of Lichtenstein discussing shopping strategies, visit www. colorado.edu/news/podcasts. — CU news services
