WRITe What is a mystery story? This week we’re going on a mystery adventure story around the world and we’re going to tell the story through postcards. A mystery is something that is difficult or not possible to understand or explain. In a mystery story the characters must solve a puzzle or a crime. In a mystery story you need: • Characters - a main character who is not the suspect (the person who might have done a crime) • Suspects who have motives, or reasons to have done the crime who we meet on the way • Setting - where does your story happen? • Problem - something missing, a crime, or another unknown • Solution - that solves the problem • Clues - hints that lead the reader to the solution • Red herrings – false clues that make the story

What is a postcard? A postcard is a card for sending a message by post without an envelope, it usually has a photograph or picture on one side. Step 1 - Planning your story elements: Decide who your characters are! Where does your story take place? What is the mystery that needs to be solved? For example: • An object or person has gone missing

• A case of mistaken identity someone is a different person to who they appear to be Decide how the mystery is solved. Step 2 - Planning your postcards Write your story in 5 postcards of no more than 10 lines! Decide who your character is writing to each time. Make up a fake address for that person. Draw a picture of the different places in your story to go on the front of each postcard. Draw a stamp to go on the back of the postcard. Dear Nana, I’m on a boat in the Grand Canyon in America, it wa s the next pla ce on the itinerary so I’v e come here to find the vase. I’ll find if it’s the last thing I do. play This week, we are going to think about using your postcards and artwork to tell a really good story! First, you need to prepare your script. You could adapt your postcards to make a new story. Tell us some of the missing details from the postcard mystery. We’ve included a story spine here as an example. One ordinary day... I travelled to the airport with my favourite suitcase. And then something extraordinary happened. My suitcase was switched! I’ve been sent on a mystery tour around the world. And because of that... I was transported to the Amazon Rain forest. It’s hot and green and beautiful. Listen to the sounds... I’m searching day and night to find the missing vase. And because of that I will become a brave explorer, who will travel to the USA, Egypt, and Paris. Until finally... I return home, with the vase. Now you need somewhere to tell your story. Where are you most comfortable? You don’t need a big space – you could pick a rug in a room. Or even your bed and have your audience sit at the bottom of it. Practice telling your story so you don’t need to read it from paper. It doesn’t matter if you don’t learn it word for word. No one is going to know if you make a bit up!

Once you know your story, think about how you will use your voice and body. Try rehearsing it like you are: - a giant bear - a tiny ant - floating in space - hiding in a secret place Try to find a voice that really suits you story. Now think about volume and feeling. How can that add meaning? Try rehearsing it like you are: - talking to someone in Australia - eating chocolate cake whilst talking - whispering in someone’s ear - trying not to cry Can you find a tone that suits your story? Different parts might have different emotions attached. Now prepare your space. If you have made some of the sculptures, postcards, or art work you could bring these with you to show your audience. Perhaps you can hold up an art piece as you are talking about it. Or invite them to look at your work? Go invite them to come and listen as soon as you are ready!

creative challenges This week our creative challenges are all themed around celebrating the world.

X

1. Write a letter to a stranger in another country. Tell them what is brilliant about you and the things you’d like to find out about their country. (Send us your letters and we will read them out online and see if we can get you a reply!)

2. Think about everyone in your house. What makes you all unique in your family? Maybe some of you are good at maths, others like eating cake and someone is great at stories! Make a picture, or collage objects together that celebrate your family. Take a photo of it.

Z

{

3. Collect some smooth rocks or stones from an outdoor walk. Write or draw a note of encouragement on them to remind someone why they are special. Hide them next time you go for a walk.

4. Write a letter to someone you know, tell them why they are special and unique to you.

H

:

5. Make yourself a passport and draw in the stamps for the places you want to visit.

6. Collect objects from around your house of the colours of the rainbow. Sculpt a rainbow – think about how colours, shapes, and textures combine to make a really interesting piece of work.

P

7. Invent a language that only you can understand. Try and communicate your thoughts with other people. What else can you do to make them understand you?

Don’t forget to send us your stories and pictures so we can see your wonderful work! email: lauren@bouncetheatre.com Whatsapp: 07980210705 We read out all the stories & show the pictures online every Friday to celebrate StoryClub
