Big Holiday Adventure

Hello! Welcome to another issue of Story Club. This week marks the start of our Big Holiday adventure. Over the next six weeks we are travelling around the world from the comfort of our own homes It’s a big giant Staycation. In an epic summer of storytelling we’re going to the seaside, flying on safari, making a camp site and much more!

This week we are thinking about photo stories. You can turn your home into a backdrop for an adventure holiday. Plus turn a space into a beach and do some sunbathing for the day. Also, don’t forget to have a go at the Collagism new Spot the Difference! Any stories we receive over the summer will be recorded for an audio story book which we’re sending to St Georges Hospital. We can’t wait to hear what you make! Everyone at Bounce Theatre

How to make your own photo story A photo story is exactly as it sounds – a story using photos! It’s a really fun way to be creative and you don’t need much to make it look good! This week’s challenge is to create a story where your characters travel to different and exciting places on an adventure!

Planning your story: Your photo story can look however you want it to. You could use real people in your photos, so you can be in the pictures yourself, or you could photograph family and friends. You could go to different locations in your local area or you could use places in your home! For my story, I chose to use two Playmobil figures that I found in my house. Then I looked at the other small things I had; for example, I found: a model of a telephone box, a model of a post box, a toy bus, a model train and train tracks. I also looked at the different pictures and carpets in my house. I have a painting that’s blue and yellow that could look like the blue of a sea and the yellow of sand on a beach. I also have a photograph of a block of flats and a painting of a mountain and the sea which can make great backgrounds. I drew some backgrounds myself of some hills and a city, just using plain paper and some colouring pens. I made a paper aeroplane and also popped down to my local park and took a picture of my playmobil characters next to some bushes to make it look like they were in a forest. There are two different ways you can plan your story. I used the miniature models, pictures and different textures in my house to help me think of different places and the action in my story. Or you can make something up from scratch, draw your own backdrops and use things like cereal boxes and toilet rolls to make the props for your picture. Or do a bit of both, there’s no right or wrong.

Here are some things to think about to help you plan your story: Characters: Who are the people in your story and what do they want to do? Setting: Where does your story take place? Problem: What is the problem that your characters need to solve and how do they do it? For example: • A character has lost something • A character is planning a surprise for another character Solution: How is the problem solved and how does your story end? Plan each picture: After you’ve worked out those things, plan what will happen in each photo; for example, it could be: Picture 1. Anisa loses her dog Picture 2. Anisa asks Brian to help her Picture 3. Anisa and Brian take a boat down the river to find the dog Until you know what happens for the whole story. How to share your photo stories: Once you’ve taken your photos, you can add captions (sentences saying what is happening in the picture) to help tell your audience what’s happening. You could put all of your pictures into one file with your captions that people can view. Or you could send your story to family and friends through Whatsapp or picture messages.

If you’d like to send your photo story to us then please email them to lauren@bouncetheatre.com, we’d love to see what you come up with!

Rosa and Lucas’ Adventure

1. Back home in London, Rosa and Lucas tried to console Mum. The car had broken down and they couldn’t afford to get a new one. What could the family do?

2. Later that day Rosa and Lucas walked past the red phone box. The phone began to ring. Rosa answered. A voice told her to go to the enchanted beach, where they would find something magical. By the phone lay a treasure map, with directions to the beach!

3. Rosa and Lucas went to the train station. The train passed through it and didn’t stop. They waited for hours but nothing else came.

4. Then they walked through a forest of huge trees swaying in the wind and wild flowers and animals. Exhausted, Rosa and Lucas found a place to rest.

5. When Rosa and Lucas woke up it was the middle of the night. The stars were shining brightly. Before them stood a bright blue hot air balloon. Rosa and Lucas went on board. They drifted into the night sky, all the way to the enchanted beach.

6. The Enchanted beach was warm, with electric blue waves and dusty sand. By the shore, the waves swept up and down and Rosa and Lucas saw a golden treasure chest.

7. The children opened up the chest and walked into the waves. Out of the chest floated a pyramid full of different colours that the light shone through. Rosa and Lucas knew it must be magic.

8. It was time to go home. At the top of the beach Rosa and Lucas saw a white airplane in the sand dunes. They boarded it, taking the magic pyramid with them, high in the sky over the sea, forest and mountains.

9. Back in London, Rosa and Lucas showed Mum the magic pyramid. ‘This is wonderful’, she told them, ‘We can use this to buy a new car and something for our whole community.’ Rosa and Lucas felt so happy. And tired from going on such an adventure!

PLAY This week we’re all about the holidays. So we’re going to have a holiday in a day! First, pick your location.

My holiday day

• Where do you want your holiday spot to be? • Is it indoors or outdoors? • Do you want it to be warm or cold? • What can you use in your house to help you build it?

12.00 I arrived at my holiday spot. It was very hot. So I sat down and did a bit of day dreaming. 12.30 I wrote my name in the sand. Then it was too hot, so I jumped in the water to cool down. 1.00 Ate my holiday picnic. 1.10 Put my toys in the fake sand and drew some pictures. 1.30 Had a water race relay with my sister. We put empty bowls at one end of the garden. Then raced to fill them with water from the sea. In one minute she won as she had more water in her bowl. 2.00 Did some more day dreaming. 2.15 Read the StoryClub pack. 2.30 Ran back inside and found some sweets. 2.40 Played spot the difference. 3.00 Went back inside for a rest.

I decided my holiday in a day was going to be at the beach! - I took two towels outside and placed them on the grass. - Next, I took our laundry basket outside and filled it with water. It’s big enough for me to sit in. This went a little away from the towels, so I had room to run to my sea. - Then I made some pretend sand by by mixing 8 cups of flour and 1 cup of oil. All the oil disappeared into the flour. I put this on a tray near the water. Packing • I put on my swim shorts, a hat, and some sun cream. • I packed a picnic, my StoryClub pack, a notepad, some toys, and some pens/paper. Also, two spoons and two bowls.

(I also totally went back and tidied up my holiday day later on) What’s your holiday in a day going to look like?
