Hello! Welcome to another issue of Story Club.

Also, don’t forget to have a go at the Collagism new game!

This week is the second week of our Big Holiday adventure.

Any stories we receive over the summer will be recorded for an audio story book which we’re sending to St Georges Hospital.

This week we are thinking about camping. You can turn your home into a backdrop for a time travelling adventure. Plus you can invent and throw your own festival!

We can’t wait to hear what you make! Everyone at Bounce Theatre

W RIT E Time Travelling Tent Adventure We are going on a trip from your living room. Imagine you have a tent; you could even set one up if you have one or make one from cushions and things you have in your home. OR draw one and imagine how you might decorate it. There’s one extra thing – your tent is magic and it can time travel! The magic tent is going to take us from our living rooms to all kinds of interesting places and times.

Planning your story: STEP ONE:

STEP THREE:

Write down some of your favourite memories of holidays or special times in the past. For example:

Now think about what happens when you time travel in your tent. What physically happens to the tent when you move through space and time? For example:

• Eating an ice cream in the park • Swimming in the sea with my cousins • Celebrating Christmas with my grandparents STEP TWO: Now imagine where you’d like to go and what you’d like to do in the future. If it’s far into the future imagine what the world might look like. Is the technology different? Do people take holidays in a different way? What are you like in the future? Write down some ideas, for example: • A holiday on Mars where robots serve me my food • Riding on a camel through a desert • Going on a hoverboard journey through the Amazon Rainforest

- You zip up the front entrance and then when you unzip it you have changed time and place - Your tent changes colour and you hear the sound of swirling winds - You go to sleep in your tent but when you wake up you have time travelled STEP FOUR: Now it’s time to plan your story. Imagine that you are in your tent in your living room. In your tent, you can time travel from the past to the present and to the future. Plan what happens in your story and what the order of events is. Try to make the order as interesting as possible; for example, you might start in the present, then go to the future and then back in time to a holiday or special day you had in the past. Here is an example for you...

Sharon’s Tent Time Travel Adventure The rain looks like it’s falling diagonally. My brother, Paul, starts watching a programme about robots on TV so I get into my tent in the living room. We were supposed to be going to the park today. It was supposed to be sunny and I was going to fly a kite - not watch robot programmes. I wish I was somewhere else today and not here. I zip up the front of the tent and lie down, I can still hear the sounds of the television. The sides of the tent start glowing yellow and blue and everything in the tent, including me, begins to float through the air! I fall onto the tent floor with a thud. The tent is brighter, everything feels a lot warmer now and I can’t hear the telly anymore. I unzip the tent and outside is sand, leading all the way to…the sea! I’m back at Bournemouth Beach. I look down at my clothes - I’m a lot shorter and wearing the trainers I had when I was... eight! ‘Sharon, quick’, my mum is standing outside the tent, ‘we’re burying Paul in the sand!’ I grab a spade and shovel sand on top of my brother’s legs! I’d forgotten how awesome this day was, we keep on going and going until it’s up to his neck. Then we take the photo that my parents still have up on the wall. I run to the water for a swim and it’s so warm; I lie on my back and look up at the sky. ‘Your turn now, Sharon. We’re going to bury you!’ Hmmm, from what I can remember, being buried wasn’t that fun. I run back into the tent and zip it up. The sides of the tent start glowing, this time white and once again I’m floating in the air. I hit the ground but this time it’s cold. When

I unzip the tent the sand on the ground has been replaced by...snow! I realise I’m wearing my old red wellies, a scarf, and a woolly hat. I’m 10 again and in the park, experiencing the snow for the first time! When I get out my Mum and Paul are already there building Roy – our first snowman. In my pocket is a carrot, some stones for eyes and a mouth, and a spare scarf for Roy. I add the carrot for his nose and then it’s time for a quick snowball fight. That day was so much fun! I start to get a bit cold, so I head back to the tent. This time the tent turns green and silver and when I wake up the tent is in mid-air. I see snowcapped mountains all around me, blue sky and cloud...I think this must be the top of Mount Everest, the tallest mountain in the world! A hoverboard floats into the tent, I nervously step onto it and, before I know it, I’m floating above all of the mountains, looking across Nepal. ‘Hi, Sharon!’ When I look around my Mum, Dad and brother are all on hoverboards too, travelling alongside me. The mountains get lower and greener, as we fly through the air I see rivers, roads, houses, people and cities below me. I’m wearing a silvery looking suit and in the pockets I find a snack to keep me going. When I look down again, I see a wall on top of green mountains...it’s the Great Wall of China, I’ve always wanted to see it! We carry on hoverboarding and then I start to feel a bit tired. I realise the tent is floating behind me so I float into it, zip it up, and lie down for a nap. When I wake up I can hear a crowd yelling. I unzip the tent and realise I’m in a special box in a stadium. Paul and my parents are sat watching a football match.

I look at the players’ strips...England are playing. I see Gareth Southgate cheering the team on by the sidelines. In my pocket I find my phone. The date says 2022, we’re at the Qatar Football World Cup! On the pitch Marcus Rashford scores and the crowd goes wild! A whistle blows and my family start cheering! ‘England just won the World Cup!’ I can’t believe it. The England fans head on to the pitch and party with the players. I’m having the best time but I can’t help but wonder where the tent might take me next. I head back in, the tent glows orange and when I open it up again I am in a desert. A camel is waiting for me outside. I climb onto it and we journey all the way through the Sahara Desert – sand

now you’ve made your tent use a torch or something with a light and practice making shadows on the walls of your tent. you could use your hands or objects to make shadows.

dunes as far as the eye can see. My family are on camels too, travelling beside me. We reach a big river and a boat is waiting for us. It takes us all the way down the River Nile and it’s beautiful. I suddenly fancy an ice cream, so I head back to my tent, which has been on the top deck of the boat all along. The tent turns purple and yellow, I’m floating through the air again and when I hit the ground it’s soft. I’ve landed on carpet, my living room carpet. I unzip the door and the first thing I see is a chocolate ice cream being held by my mum. My brother’s watching something better on TV and outside my window the sun is shining. I loved visiting places I’ve been before and where I might go in the future but it’s also really good to be back home. And it’s time to go to the park.

PLAY This week, we are going to take our tent and pitch it somewhere in our house for a festival. What is a festival? A festival can be a day or a few days of celebration. People might have religious festivals or they might go to ones that celebrate music/art and things like that. There are lots of famous festivals like Glastonbury, where people play music and people stay for a weekend of camping. So, you need to decide what’s the theme of your festival? A festival of... • Berries • Sandwiches • Superheroes • Good weather • Doodling • Music • Rainbows I decided to throw a festival of Stories – because I love stories. Now name your festival! Collagism decided she loves music and fruit, so her festival is called Glastonberry. I love stories, so I’m calling mine Storival. What will yours be? Now, decide how you are going to celebrate your festival. You might: • Make smoothies • Eat sandwiches • Play with super hero toys

• • • •

Sit outside and enjoy the sunshine Doodle pictures all day Sing songs and play instruments Wear rainbow colours and paint rainbows

d

For my festival, I collected all of my favourite stories – these are ones that I have made and some from my favourite books. My idea is everyone is going to have nice snacks and read stories. Now you can invite people to your festival. (Use the art warm up to design a festival pass so they know they can join in if you like!) I invited three of my friends to join my festival. I asked them all to bring a tent, snacks, and their favourite stories. • We put up our tents in a circle in our garden. • We put out a picnic blanket in the middle and laid out all our snacks. • Then we took it in turns to read our favourite stories. Sometimes we stood up and acted them out. • When it was night-time, we made stories just with shadows and music. It was lots of fun! Tomorrow we are going to camp out in my friends living room for the festival of hot chocolate, because it might be raining.
