Dean David Cameron (l) and Jaby Mathew, recipient of the 2013 Robert C. Vipond Graduate Scholarship in Political Science, to which Cameron is a donor.

Message from the Dean It is with great pride that I present the 2013 student awards in the Faculty of Arts & Science. More than 1,700 students received an Arts & Science award last year—the most in our Faculty’s history—and their achievement is to be celebrated. When I was a graduate student those many years ago, I was fortunate to receive a scholarship. It meant more to me than simply being able to pay for tuition and books; it meant that I was living up to my potential as a student and a citizen. I felt a sense of obligation that was more personal than any I had ever felt before. I focused more intently on my studies, and I wrote letters to the donor to inform them of my progress. They invested in me and I, in turn, did my best to live up to their expectations. Today, I am just one of the hundreds of people—alumni and friends, faculty and staff—who has made a donation to Arts & Science scholarships. The reasons for giving are as varied as the scholarships we support. But we are all motivated by one fundamental tenet: pay it forward.

Our students are preparing to grapple with the most pressing challenges of the 21st century. And it is incumbent on us to give them every advantage possible. It is not enough to hope for the future. We must take action—and there is no better long-term investment in the future health and prosperity of our society than an investment in the education of young people at a time of enormous personal growth, discovery and promise. That is why giving to scholarships to support Arts & Science students is such a powerful statement—and why it can make such a powerful and demonstrable difference. Thank you for joining us as we prepare our students to enter our extraordinary alumni community of thinkers, visionaries and innovators. Your boundless commitment is essential to fulfill our mission to educate tomorrow’s global citizens. Best wishes,

David Cameron, FRSC Dean and Professor of Political Science

The promise of an Arts & Science education With more than 30,000 students enrolled in over 425 undergraduate, graduate and professional master’s programs across the sciences, social sciences and humanities, U of T’s Faculty of Arts & Science is a university within a university. The Faculty is at the heart of a globally oriented research and education powerhouse that is consistently ranked as the best university in Canada and among the top 20 in the world.

Joan Miguel Romero (l), a Life Sciences undergrad, and Emma Hansen, a Math and Physical Sciences undergrad, each received the prestigious Schulich Leader Scholarship for first-year students studying science, technology, engineering or mathematics. Photo by: Jacklyn Atlas

We advance knowledge through research. We are an engine for innovation and economic development. We educate young people and empower their social mobility. And we have made it our mission to prepare global citizens—ethically grounded, critically engaged, original thinkers with an international outlook who are ready to meet the most pressing challenges of the 21st century. To fulfill this vision, the Faculty has pledged that every person accepted into an undergraduate program will receive a world-class education, regardless of their ability to pay for it. As a result, no qualified undergraduate will have to decline admission or withdraw from his or her studies due to financial circumstances. To attract the top graduate students from across Canada and around the world, we are equally committed to providing competitive graduate funding packages. Graduate students—and the original research they undertake—are essential to U of T’s global standing, as well as Canada’s competitiveness in the knowledge economy. The quality and number of our graduate students is a strong indicator of the intensity of our research and a key factor in recruiting and retaining our leading faculty members. And as mentors and teaching assistants, they contribute to a positive academic experience for our undergraduates. Our donors have made this commitment to excellence and accessibility possible. For the past 20 years, they—along with the government—have enabled us to financially support more students than any other Ontario university. The need for this support is self-evident. Ontario is last among Canadian provinces in perstudent funding and U of T operates with less than half of the per-student funding available to peer public universities in the United States. At the same time, undergraduate enrolment has increased by 41 per cent over the last two decades while the number of students who rely on financial support has increased six-fold. By 2017, the demand for financial aid is expected to grow by an additional 34 per cent.

2| Faculty of Arts & Science

In 2013, alumnus Noah Blackstein (BA 1993) established two awards, the Noah Blackstein Graduate Fellowship and the Michael Donnelly Graduate Fellowship for PhD candidates engaged in the study of political economy. The latter fellowship is named in honour of his former professor, Michael Donnelly (l).

The need is similar at the graduate level. Thanks to a government funding program introduced in 2005 that recognizes the value of a graduate education, we have been able to increase our number of domestic students. But additional resources are required to sustain a competitive level of funding for this expansion. And unlike several other provinces, Ontario does not provide perstudent grants for international graduate students. As a result, although we receive several hundred applications each year from some of the world’s top master’s and PhD candidates, we can admit far fewer than is optimal for maintaining a truly robust research enterprise. Because of these daunting fiscal challenges, philanthropic support for merit- and needs-based scholarships is ever more critical to educate our students. The benefits of these awards are both immediate and long-term, measured by what the recipients accomplish during their studies and also by what they give back to their professions, their communities and the world throughout their lives.

A commitment to student support is a vote of confidence in future generations of Arts & Science students. By funding an award, our donors are able to make a tangible connection with today’s students and tomorrow’s leaders. Through Boundless, the Faculty of Arts & Science’s unprecedented $250-million fundraising campaign, we are working harder than ever to enhance, strengthen and transform the student learning experience. We are building on the core values that make our student experience great: constant innovation in undergraduate and graduate education and a strong resolve to support students through merit- and needsbased awards. Thanks to the generosity and vision of our donors, we are inspiring our community to new heights of achievement as they make important contributions toward a more prosperous world.

If you want to get something out of life you have to give.

There is no satisfaction in just taking. I firmly believe that. I came to Canada from Czechoslovakia in 1949, when I was 24, and this country has been very lovely to me. I started as a farm labourer and went to school and became a lawyer. Now, I’m 90 years old and I can see even more clearly the importance of contributing to society without any expectation of getting something in return. The students who receive these awards go on to do great things, to make a difference in the world, and hopefully they will realize, as I did, that it’s important to give back.

When I was a U of T Commerce student, I somehow won an award. It was unexpected, but also strongly reinforcing, and it has had a lasting impact. I resolved that one day, if I could, I too would create an award, and last year I was able to do so. Of all the ways to give, I know of none better than scholarships. Every cent of every dollar goes to a deserving student. Best of all, meeting the first recipient of the scholarship I established was so rewarding that I decided to create another. And to encourage others to support scholarships, my donation will provide matching funds to awards created by others. I encourage everyone with an interest in giving to Rotman Commerce to enquire. It is more than worth it.

- David Scrymgeour (BCom 1979), entrepreneur, executive-in-residence at Rotman Commerce, donor 8| Faculty of Arts & Science

I chose U of T because it provides so many opportunities. It’s a world-class university in a worldclass city—that combination allows me to apply my education in whatever way I desire. I know from experience how important scholarships are. They allow students to focus on their studies and worry less about paying for their education. Personally, having a scholarship has also boosted my confidence and determination because it reinforces that I should be here and that inspires me to work as hard as I can. - Siobhan Scott, a first-year Bachelor of Commerce student, is the recipient of the Scrymgeour Scholarship in Entrepreneurial Management.

Receiving a scholarship from the University of Toronto is one of the greatest privileges that can be granted to a student. It is not only a means to finance an education at a premier university, but also an invitation to be courageous and inquisitive, to take risks, and to explore new subjects and ideas. The benefits of scholarships also extend beyond the classroom. Freed from the obligation of finding summer work each year, I could instead pursue those opportunities that most captured my interest. For me, this took the form of an independent research project at a university-affiliated hospital. This experience— which I could not have accessed without the scholarship—helped me develop valuable research skills, broaden my scholarly perspective, and take the first step towards pursuing a career in medicine. - Galina Gheihman, a Neuroscience Specialist with minors in Physiology and Psychology, is the recipient of the University of Toronto Scholarship.

Ensuring that the best students can study at U of T’s Munk School

of Global Affairs is critical for it to solidify its reputation as a path-setting institution. These students will help to position Toronto and Canada as leaders within a transnational conversation about global affairs and the future governance of our planet. My hope is that out of that conversation will emerge new ideas for how to develop a truly sustainable economy, and how the world can better balance a growing population and finite natural resources without breaching ecological limits.

Scholarships are inarguably valuable for the financial support they provide, as well as for the rewarding and humbling feeling of being selected as a recipient. But just as important, in my opinion, is the impact of scholarships on your mental health. The moment I opened the envelope informing me of my award, two important aspects of my life changed for the better. On a pragmatic level, I was now able to focus on my academic year and on my work-study position without having to get a second job. Secondly, on a more personal level, this scholarship represented much-needed moral support that will always remind me that U of T is a fantastic community, where determination is matched only by solidarity.

I'm proud to be an alumnus of Canada’s premier university, one with programs that rank among the best in the world. My education benefited from scholarships, and it would have been hard for my family had that support not been there. I think it’s important that those of us who are able to help future generations of scholars at great research universities do what we can, not just to pay back our benefactors, but also to help the students of today become the successful leaders—and able benefactors—of tomorrow. - Paul Cadario (BASc 1973), Distinguished Senior Fellow in Global Innovation and Adjunct Professor in Civil Engineering at U of T, donor

I left my home in Medan, Indonesia, to study chemistry with the most distinguished

faculty in the world, such as Nobel Prize-winner John Polanyi. It was an opportunity to conduct research at the highest level—and I have scholarships and the donors who made them possible, to thank for that. I view scholarships as a form of trust that is bestowed by society. It is in my best interest to ensure that this resource is not spent in vain. Hence, I derive extra motivation from them to work harder and do more research. I have a conviction that academic pursuit, unlike others, is a pursuit of truth and knowledge, which I strongly believe will benefit our civilization as a whole.

Thirty students received a scholarship funded by the Tanenbaum family in 2013. Among them are (l-r): Nathalie LaCoste, Craig Smith, Jessica Radin, Aldea Mulhern, Natalie Mathieson, Burin Yildiztekin, Jonathan Neufeld.

As an international PhD candidate from Turkey, I could not pursue my studies at U of T without the help of the Tanenbaum Scholarship. I’ve been able to undertake a comparative study of monotheistic religions, such as Judaism, Islam and Christianity, and explore meaningful opportunities to build bridges between various religious and cultural identities that open up the possibility of generating productive interreligious dialogue.

- Burin Yildiztekin, a PhD candidate in the Department of Sociology and the Collaborative PhD Program in Jewish Studies, is the recipient of the Tanenbaum Graduate Scholarship in Jewish Studies.

More than 100 donors have given to the Harold Harvey Scholarship in Zoology, including Professor Emeritus Harvey himself. Pictured are: (back row, l-r) Professors Aneil Agrawal, James Thomson, Locke Rowe, Nick Collins, Brian Shuter; (middle) Professors Helen Rodd, Harold Harvey, Don Jackson; (front) Lifei Wang (PhD 2013; recipient).

Harold Harvey has worked tirelessly—and successfully—to raise

money to support graduate and undergraduate students in the biological sciences. To recognize the impact of his efforts, his fellow faculty members created a scholarship in his honour. Awards like the Harold Harvey Scholarship in Zoology allow students at the leading edge of their field to focus on their research and to present their findings at international conferences. This has been invaluable to students like Lifei Wang, who received the Harvey Scholarship in 2013 and whom I had the privilege to supervise. Lifei’s research examined the potential for invasive animal species to establish in Ontario lakes and how we might identify at-risk ecosystems, work which has huge environmental and economic implications.

2013 STUDENT AWARDS | 29

How to give We invite you to join the Boundless Campaign as we enhance, strengthen and transform the student learning experience. Through the campaign, we will build on the core values that have made our student experience great: constant innovation in undergraduate education and a deep commitment to supporting undergraduate and graduate students through merit- and needs-based awards. With your generous support, we will nurture our exceptional students and prepare them for leadership roles across all sectors. Together, we will harness the boundless potential of our community to make major contributions toward a more prosperous world.

General Support

Planned Giving

You can direct your donation either towards general support for student awards in a program, department or the Faculty, or towards an established award. Every gift, at every level, can make a big difference in a student’s life.

A planned gift allows you to create a meaningful legacy at the university while receiving significant tax benefits. Planned gifts include bequests, retirement funds, charitable remainder trusts, residual interest, life insurance, as well as gifts-in-kind such as real estate.

Named Awards

International Gifts

A named award may be created by a single donor or multiple donors if a certain funding level is pledged. Once established, an award can be built up through future contributions to increase its value and/or the number of awards made.

Alumni and their families who reside in the U.S. may make donations directly to the University of Toronto and use the charitable receipt for their U.S. income tax returns under the Canada-United States Income Tax Convention. American citizens (or residents) who are not alumni or related to alumni, as well as corporations, foundations, estates and trusts requiring a U.S. tax receipt can contribute through The Associates of the University of Toronto, Inc. For more information, contact associates.ut@utoronto.ca or 1.800.699.1736.

Corporate Matching Gift Program More than 500 companies will match contributions made by their employees, directors and retirees to the University of Toronto. To find out if your company is a matching gift partner, please call 416.978.3810 or visit uoft.me/corporatematching.

Stocks & Securities: Tax-Smart Giving Donating publicly traded stock and securities is one of the most tax-smart ways to support the University of Toronto. You receive a tax receipt for the current value of the donated publicly traded stock or securities, plus you eliminate any tax owing on the capital gain.
