Welcome

from

the Schools Liaison and Partnerships Team

Welcome to our 2021-22 programme, where you will find a wide range of exciting workshops and events for you and your students. Over the past 18 months, we have all come through so much, adapted so quickly and learned new skills. We are excited about the return of face-to-face events and want to make the most of the chance to interact with you and your students. In this guide you’ll find a wide range of opportunities, with activities that can be delivered on your campus or ours. We will continue to work with you to support you in these challenging times, and recognise the continued demands on you, dealing with isolation or other issues caused by the pandemic. If you would prefer us to deliver any of our programme virtually, or need to make any last-minute changes, then just let us know.

To book onto any of our events, or to discuss the needs of your students, email: schoolsliaison@bournemouth.ac.uk or visit our website: www.bournemouth.ac.uk/ schools-liaison 3

Evaluation and staying connected Staying connected

Making an impact

This programme outlines our offer for you and your students for 2021-22. If there is anything you would like our support with that is not mentioned in the programme, get in touch and we will be happy to explore these with you.

Our activities are carefully evaluated to ensure they are having the expected impact on young people. We may ask to collect data from participating students or teaching staff to inform these evaluations, and this will always be made clear during the booking stage. This data helps us to evidence the effectiveness of our work in encouraging young people to progress to university, especially those from disadvantaged or underrepresented groups.

Opportunities are often added throughout the year, make sure you do not miss out by registering to receive our monthly e-updates www.bournemouth.ac.uk/BU-Update.

Explore your options… Our explore-your-options Hub is a digital resource designed with sixth form and college students in mind. Students can browse videos, blogs, podcasts and more to help them with their decision making. Whether they are looking to discover a career or subject area that is right for them, work out if university is the way to go or find up to date information on applications, finance and university life, the hub has it all. Visit www.bournemouth.ac.uk/exploreyour-options

We are always happy to share anonymised data or quotes about our activities with participating schools and colleges. We are also able to produce bespoke short reports or infographics for you to share with colleagues or use as evidence of encounters with higher education.

Something for you Our annual Careers Leaders and Teachers Conference takes place on Wednesday 11 May 2022 and is a fantastic opportunity for teachers, careers leaders and educational professionals to find out the latest updates from across the sector and to participate in a range of workshops and activities. Keep an eye on our BU Updates for more information and how to book your place.

Application support 1:1 support session For those students who could use a bit of a confidence boost, have questions about their options or need help with their UCAS application, our team can support via a 1:1 virtual support session. Students can book and appointment via a quick and easy form at a time that suits them. We can help with: • top tips on personal statements • interview preparation and practice • how to research courses and universities • where to find relevant work experience.

Access BU At BU we know that grades are only part of the picture. If your students apply for one of our courses, we look at more than just academic performance when making offers. ‘Access BU’ allows applicants to tell us about personal circumstances that are not always evident on their UCAS applications. We then use this information when considering their application to decide if we can make a more flexible offer despite an applicant not being able to meet the entry requirements on our website. The Access BU scheme may be considered for your students who: • are care experienced • live in a low participation postcode • live in an area with less advantaged socio-economic characteristics • have a disability, medical condition or learning need • are an asylum seeker or refugee • took exams at a school or college with low performance scores. Applications are processed via a short form at www.bournemouth.ac.uk/accessbu
