Your Students’ Union
Moving to a new town and meeting new people can be daunting. As your Students’ Union at Bournemouth University (SUBU), we’re here to make sure you feel confident, prepared, and excited about your new life in Bournemouth.
We can’t wait to welcome you to your new home here in Bournemouth. Stay up to date with what’s happening at your Students’ Union and how you can get involved at subu.org.uk or by following us on social media @sububournemouth
What is a Students’ Union?
SUBU exists to represent the interests of all students and ensure you have the best time at university. We’re here to help improve your educational experience, provide advice, support, and all the exciting stuff that comes with being a student in Bournemouth!
SUBU is led by a team of four Full-Time Student Officers, who are elected by students each year. They decide the direction of the union, run campaigns and represent you to the university and beyond. We also have seven Part-Time Student Officers – they represent certain groups of students. No matter your nationality or ethnicity, your sexual orientation or gender, or if you live with a disability, we have a Part-Time Officer who will make sure that you are represented in the work of SUBU and the university. We also have dedicated community groups for students who are parents, mature, independent or international. Simply self-define via our website at www.subu.org.uk/represented/selfdefine and receive information about your student community, including free events. What events can I attend?
For the partygoers and socialites, we’ll be holding a programme of events at your very own nightclub – The Old Fire Station, based on Lansdowne campus. We host a huge range of club nights, live music tours, massive student parties and sidesplitting stand-up comedy. It’s home to Lollipop – the longest-running student night in the UK exclusive to students.
If staying out ‘till late isn’t your vibe, we host a whole variety of events throughout the year at the Student Centre, based on Talbot Campus. To keep up to date with our events, follow us on Instagram @sububournemouth or check out our events listing page online at www.subu.org.uk/whatson.
Can I join a club or society?
Joining a club or society is probably one of the best things you can do during your time at uni. Not only will you learn new skills, boost your confidence and make some unforgettable memories, but you’ll meet some great mates along the way.
Our Refreshers’ Fair is a must for your calendar,
taking place on Tuesday 7 February on Talbot Campus. You’ll be able to explore the wide range of clubs you can join, take part in loads of different activities and benefit from big brand offers. All our clubs and societies are led by students with the same interests, whether a hobby, sport, profession, culture or faith. If you can’t see a club that you’re interested in, you can even set up your own! Come along to our Refresher’s Fair to find out more or visit www.subu.org.uk/clubs
What else can I get involved in?
You can volunteer with SUBU in the local community and gain a tonne of new skills that will make you stand out from the crowd! To find out more, visit www.subu.org.uk/volunteer Student Reps are one of the ways that SUBU represents your academic interests. Heading to campus?
Escape from campus academic life at Dylan’s Kitchen & Bar, based on Talbot Campus. It’s the place to be if you’re looking for a relaxed burger and a pint at prices you simply cannot beat. The Student Centre is also a great place to chill out between lectures and grab a hot snack from Ground Up Café... which sells Starbucks coffee! If you’re based at Lansdowne campus, you can find SUBU in the Bournemouth Gateway Building (BG301). It’s the perfect space for you to make use of our facilities and find out more about our services.
