MESSAGE FROM
t BU we’re proud of all the opportunities that are available to students and staff. All of our undergraduate students are offered a placement year and 90% graduate with relevant work experience – more than any other university in the country. Find out how one of our current placement students and a graduate have gone on to achieve their dreams out in space and in Hollywood respectively, on pages 6 and 8. There are also a variety of ways in which staff can evolve in their role at BU. On page 10 you can hear how some of our academics’ careers have developed, from their days as early career researchers to the exciting research projects they now lead. While on page 14 we read about one staff member’s positive experience of one of many internal development opportunities. Speaking of evolution and development, I’d like to say how proud we are to be a partner of AFC Bournemouth, who were recently promoted to the Premier League – we look forward to enhancing our relationship with them in the years to come.

NEWS around BU Work experience at BU
As we expand our work with local secondary schools, the UK Student Recruitment & Outreach team are setting up an official Work Experience scheme for secondary school students.
STUDENT CENTRE OPENS The new £10.5 million Student Centre on Talbot Campus, which opened in March, contains a range of social and collaborative learning space and bookable meeting rooms, as well as two cafés and access points for student services.
The beach hut techno-booths have already proved remarkably popular. Many students are taking advantage of them to enjoy a whatever-the-weather seaside vibe, with the added benefit of technology to enhance their working environment. If you need a new perspective on your studies pop up to the top floor to enjoy the view.
Welcome to Professor Christine Maggs BU welcomes Professor Christine Maggs – our new Executive Dean of the Faculty of Science & Technology.
The team is keen to capture any past, current or future work experience activity happening in BU’s Faculties and Professional Services.
Christine joins BU from Queen’s University Belfast where she was Head of the School of Biological Sciences and Professor of Phycology.
If you are currently offering or have offered work experience placements in the past, either through the Education Business Partnership (EBP) website or as an informal arrangement, please email BUworkexperience@ bournemouth.ac.uk
Christine has a strong research profile in phycology – the study of marine macroalgae - and has served on a Research Excellence Framework panel and advised the Natural Environment Research Council.

During her time there she played a critical role in the School achieving Athena Swan Gold, which recognises the commitment to advancing women’s careers in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine.
In addition to this wealth of knowledge and expertise, Christine is also committed to maintaining and improving the student experience.
MEET THE PROFESSIONALS The Director of BBC England was among the media professionals who recently visited BU to network with students and share their views on the future of the industry. Peter Salmon, who oversees BBC output across the country, gave the keynote presentation at the Meet the Professionals event, organised by BU and the Royal Television Society Southern Centre. Peter said: “Bournemouth particularly seems to be flying, winning Oscars for things like Interstellar – there’s obviously something special in the water and how you’re taught and what you learn here.” The event gave media students the chance to meet informally with media professionals from a range of industry backgrounds and experience, to discuss and learn more about issues, opportunities and professional career development.
TEDxBournemouthUniversity Fifteen students, along with final year Business and Marketing student Elena Dimitrova, recently organised the first TEDxBournemouthUniversity event. A variety of speakers – including Zornitza Yovcheva, who talked about technology in tourism – sparked a number of discussions on a wide variety of topics.
Zornitza Yovcheva
The successful event received great feedback from participants on the day and provided highly desirable skills and experiences for the student organisers to take forward into the workplace. Watch videos from the event at: www.bournemouth.ac.uk/tedx-playlist.
sportBU successes After an unbeaten season, winning the Premier South Division, BU’s Volleyball Men’s 1st team were crowned Volleyball England Student Cup Champions in February. They took second place in the British University & Colleges Sport National Championships in March and were greeted by HRH Princess Anne. BU Men’s Football 1st team reached the BUCS National Trophy Cup Final picking up silver medals after a hard-fought match. At the South West Conference Cup Finals, BU again showed our sporting prowess with teams in six of the 20 finals. BU’s Mixed Golf 4th, Women’s Football 1st and Women’s Badminton 1st teams all fought valiantly in their finals but were just pipped to the post.
CHLOE’S
COLUMN Something for everyone This year more than 3,000 students came together to create over 100 clubs and societies at BU, ranging from debating current affairs, to shared interests such as baking or skydiving. Add to the mix a large network of academic and professional societies, and there really is something for everyone. Getting involved with a club or society is easy and fun, and can make a real difference to your student experience. It’s never too late to join up – or create your own! They’re an opportunity to socialise and have fun, find social and academic support, and access new opportunities. Plus the skills you develop, and the knowledge you’ll gain of your subject, can add something of unique value to your CV. We also recruit students for a number of leadership opportunities within SUBU. From running awareness campaigns with the Activities Council, to being part of the welcome crew for new students, or taking leadership roles in our fundraising or volunteering departments. We’ll be recruiting to all of these posts again soon. If you want to get involved with any of our activities next year visit us in the fantastic new Student Centre on Talbot Campus or go online: www.subu.org.uk.

To infinity and beyond... BA (Hons) Business Studies with Enterprise student Sam Harrison tells InsideBU how his placement year exceeded all expectations.
Sam Harrison dreams big. Having previously received funding through BU’s Global Horizons Fund to study abroad in China, India and Australia, he is currently on placement with a start-up company in California called Recruiterbox – an online software that helps companies receive and manage job applications. “Doing my placement in Silicon Valley has helped me realise how many options are available. The experiences and connections I’ve made have been invaluable to my future career,” says Sam.
To find out more about the Global Horizons Fund, head to www.bournemouth. ac.uk/globalhorizons. The deadline to apply for activities commencing September to December 2015 is 30 June 2015.
6 | Summer 2015| InsideBU
The networking opportunities that Sam has been exposed to on his placement, coupled with his own determination to succeed, mean that he is already thinking about what he can achieve next. As a result, he has created his own company sending probes to space to conduct research and provide experimental marketing for businesses. “Space has always been a passion of mine and I had the opportunity to network at the
NASA Ames Research Centre – this gave me the chance to speak with some ex-NASA guys, which was my first step in this direction,” Sam says. “The first probe was partly paid for by a company in California to take the first ‘selfie’ in nearspace. Future vehicles could be used for a variety of things such as marketing activities, biological research into cosmic radiation and how this affects cells, for example.” Sam and his team are now in the early stages of designing new technology to expand the probes’ capabilities and plan on turning it into a fullyfledged business: “I have a lot of connections with a company called Made in Space, who run the 3D printers on the International Space Station. I’m working with them to discuss designs and fabrications for future probes.” Reflecting on his placement year Sam says: “I don’t believe I would be where I am today had it not been for these incredible experiences and opportunities, which were largely funded by the Global Horizons Fund.”
Standing out from the crowd
Whether you’re a student applying for a placement or graduate position, or a member of staff after your dream job within BU, these top tips from our experts will help you stand out in a competitive job market. Peter Salmon, Director of BBC England “Try and think of those eye-catching hobbies, passions or activities; something alongside the work that makes you stand out and that makes me remember you. What can you bring to my newsroom or team that I haven’t already got?”
Alys Penfold, BA (Hons) Multimedia Journalism/SUBU Green Taskforce “Employers today look for something extra special that will make you stand out, and just having a degree won’t cut it anymore. Not only will extra-curricular activities look great on your CV, but you’ll experience unique opportunities, meet new people and develop your personal character by getting involved.”
Linda Ladle, Careers & Employability Manager, BU “Before any interview, research the company and think of questions you might be asked. Focus on the skills you have that are specifically relevant to the job you are applying for - this goes beyond the technical aspects of your degree – think of softer skills such as communication, team work and so on.”
Andy Lockley, Oscar-winning BU graduate “Be flexible, don’t pigeon-hole yourself to anything too specific. You might get your foot in the door doing something that isn’t entirely what you were after but then leads to what you really wanted to do ultimately.”
Marie Smith, Leadership And Engagement Manager at BU “When you’re ‘selling yourself’ remember to give relevant examples using the ‘STAR’ acronym: Situation (what, when, where and with whom) Task or objective (what you hoped to achieve) Action (what you did i.e. focus on your input) Result (what the outcome was and the skills you developed) Good luck with your applications and interviews and remember to be a STAR!”

REF 2014:
The stories behind the statistics Research at BU has gone from strength to strength. The Research Excellence Framework – or REF2014 – placed BU in the top 10 for increase in research power, reflecting both the quality of research and a 45.5% increase in research staff submitted.
InsideBU hears two of the stories behind those statistics.
Professor Rob Britton My area of research is fish ecology, which stems from my PhD in that area and a spell working with the Environment Agency where I was responsible for the regulation of invasive fish. Following strong support from a mentor at the start of my BU career, I was successful in a number of RCUK and EU grant opportunities, enabling me to complete some fascinating work into the impacts of non-native fish on native species. This resulted in strong publications in peer-reviewed journals, including Global Change Biology and Trends in Ecology & Evolution that have been used by policy makers to improve their management. I now oversee a number of PhD students and a post-doctoral researcher. After the support I received when I first joined BU, it’s really rewarding to be involved in the development of other people’s research careers.
Dr Roman Gerodimos I’ve worked at BU for 13 years now, starting as a PhD student and parttime lecturer and now working as a Principal Lecturer. I’ve always had a passion for politics and international affairs, and my PhD focused on the factors that motivate young people to engage with public affairs, especially on the web. Since then, I’ve moved on to explore the relationship between digital media literacy, public space and urban coexistence. I’ve also been examining challenges to contemporary democracy, such as populism and extremism in Europe.
For more information on these and other projects, please visit research. bournemouth.ac.uk

My biggest highlight has been the creation of the Greek Politics Specialist Group (GPSG) of the Political Studies Association, which I founded in 2004. It’s gone on to become the leading network of Greek politics experts in the world. Thanks to BU’s support, the GPSG has allowed me to connect with academics, journalists and policy makers all across Europe.
Bournemouth: UK’s fastest-growing digital economy Bournemouth has emerged as the UK’s fastest growing digital economy, according to a recent report. InsideBU looks at BU’s contribution in this rapidly increasing market.
T
BU MOBILE APPS
he landmark Tech Nation report – the largest ever study of the UK’s digital sector – revealed that the number of start-up businesses in the area grew 212% between 2010 and 2013, compared to just 92% in London. Professor John Fletcher, BU’s Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation, firmly believes the university has been instrumental in this success. “BU is fundamental to it because we have the international recognition in terms of our creative and digital expertise,” he says. He continues: “We attract a really good group of students who are exposed to worldleading research by our excellent lecturers. Quite simply, BU has been the nebula from which
stars of the creative and digital industries have been born.” At any one time, BU students and staff are working across a huge number of digital and creative projects and initiatives which sees them collaborating with local partners and businesses. As a result, BU is constantly contributing to this evergrowing industry.
BFX COMPETITION The annual BFX Festival celebrates the best in talent and creativity in the animation, computer game and visual effects industries. The BFX team, led by Festival Director Sofronis Efstathiou and VFX Hub
Director Peter Truckel, teamed up with media accountants Kingston Smith to develop their Creative Vision Award. It gave charities – such as Anthony Nolan and Dyslexia Action – the opportunity to apply to be the subject of animations created by students during this year’s BFX Competition. Competing teams from across the UK were mentored by industry professionals, offering students an invaluable experience and a large number of graduates who have competed in the last two years are now working within the visual effects and animation industry.
Iain MacRury and Alec Holmes from the Faculty of Media & Communication, alongside the Higher Education Innovation Funding project team, work with creative agency 3 Sided Cube to train BU and Arts University Bournemouth students in mobile apps design and iOS and Android development. Opportunities to learn practical skills are in high demand in this industry, and BU is keen to support employers with skills development in this area.
CYBER SECURITY A number of students are working on a new programme, giving them a greater insight into the world of cyber-crime. Co-ordinated by Christopher Richardson from the Faculty of Science & Technology, alongside Dorset Police and the Regional Organised Crime Unit, students work on cases using tools associated with policing and cybercrime detection. The BFX Festival runs from 26 September to 4 October. Visit www.bfxfestival.com to find out more.

Events like the Festival give us an exceptional chance to talk to a range of people we wouldn’t usually meet.

And it’s not just those who study or work at BU who can enjoy the experience. Members of the local business community are incredibly enthusiastic about how they have benefitted from the events. Charlotte Craig from Neon Web Design, described the ‘Cyber Security: Protecting your assets’ event as: “Very informative and insightful, covering a variety of topics from industry experts. Every talk has been incredibly educational. A most enjoyable day and highly recommended.”
and partnerships, leading to new student projects and special guest talks. BU PhD student Ashley Laishley worked at the ‘50 milliseconds to make a good first impression’ event, demonstrating eye tracking and says:“The Festival is a great opportunity to bring our research into the real world and allows us to showcase the cutting-edge eye tracking technology that we’re proud to work with at BU. “Events like the Festival give us an exceptional chance to talk to a range of people we wouldn’t usually meet, and help us to expand the ways we think about the work we’re doing. “We enjoy sharing exciting ideas we’re working on, but presenting events empowers your own confidence and skills in public engagement, so at the end of the day you feel good about your own achievements as well.”

Get inspired Enhancing your employability skills is something everyone should have on their ‘to-do’ list, and BU offers many options. Barry Squires talks to InsideBU about his experience of the internal opportunities available at BU.
I’ve worked at BU for 11 years and have had various roles, which have led me to my current position of Acting Sports Operations Manager. In 2014 I decided to apply for a secondment as Public Engagement and Impact Manager based in the Research and Exchange Office (RKEO), as I thought it would be a great opportunity for me to learn new skills through engaging with other parts of the organisation. I had a fantastic time leading on RKEO’s public engagement activities, supporting a variety of academics with their individual events, such as ‘Anthropology in the World’ with Fiona Coward. I also had overall responsibility for BU’s Festival of Learning. I settled into the team and found I had many transferable skills to bring to the role. With my experience in events and community engagement, along with my network of contacts, I developed and championed new initiatives that engaged the regional community with our world-class research. It was also an opportunity to extend my relationships within BU and see how another department operated. A particular highlight for me was taking a
14 | Summer 2015| InsideBU
team of academics and support staff ‘on the road’ to several large scale music festivals – including Bestival and Glastonbury. The role enabled me to develop my project management skills and, along with some fantastic media training from the Press and PR team, I became more confident to speak on behalf of BU on public engagements. Secretly I’ve become a bit of a science geek and am constantly impressed by the breadth of research we do here. I’d recommend getting involved in any RKEO events run for BU and the wider community. Following my secondment I’ve been fortunate enough to return to sportBU as Acting Sports Operations Manager, overseeing the whole department. I’m certain the opportunities I had and the experience I gained whilst working with RKEO will have a positive impact on my ability to succeed in this role. I’d highly recommend taking advantage of any internal development opportunities as it’s a great way to broaden your understanding of BU, and enhance your skills. The university gets to retain your knowledge and reap the rewards of applying this to other areas of its operations – which can’t be a bad thing!

A
s part of the Careers & Employability team it’s my role to support students to recognise the skills they acquire from their many achievements during their time at university, and how they can be transferred to the work place and beyond. The Student Development Award allows students to ‘evidence’ their skills in everything from volunteering, working part-time, coaching, organising events
and being student ambassadors in the form of an e-portfolio. This showcases photos, videos and reports to share with any potential employers. Currently there are 400 students registered for the Student Development Award, and I’m responsible for organising inductions and meeting students, coaching them in reflective writing and developing their e-portfolio skills.
I work with our key sponsors, including JP Morgan, and organise our brilliant awards ceremony each year. I find it so aweinspiring to see what our students are capable of achieving alongside their other commitments – they really are great! Outside of work my favourite pasttimes are cake decorating, crafts and being outdoors – preferably on one of our lovely local beaches in the sun!
Wayne Bennett BSc (Hons) Nutrition and MSc Public Health Graduate and GROW@BU Student Engagement Coordinator
D
uring my BSc course I chose to complete the Student Development Award and really enjoyed getting involved with different activities and developing new skills. If not for the Student Development Award, I don’t think I’d ever have considered fundraising for a local charity or undertaking a 10K run. I was proud of my achievement and learned valuable lessons in organising a fundraising event and managing my time to train. I now work as your happy, confident – and currently bearded – Student
Engagement Coordinator for the Faculty of Health & Social Sciences (HSS). The GROW@BU team - who help learners reach their full potential - didn’t exist when I started at BU, so when the opportunity to work in the team arose I was excited to provide incoming HSS students with my own knowledge and experiences of my time at BU to help make the transition into higher education as smooth as possible. I really enjoy seeing how our students have already developed from being somewhat shy at the start of the academic year.

BY DAY BY NIGHT
When Michelle Winter isn’t bringing students and employers together as a Graduate Employment Officer, she’s following her passion for rock bands and organising local music festivals.
BY DAY
BY NIGHT
I love the interaction with the employers and finding out what they can offer. Whether it’s a graduate role, voluntary role for current students, or a placement – I’ve never come across anyone that says they have nothing to offer.
It’s my love of music that’s led me to organising local festivals and events in my spare time. A few years ago a local community centre was closing down and someone asked if I’d go in to help. I pulled in favours, got Rumer to perform at an event and we raised enough money to keep it open.
It’s my job to make links between employers and our students – once the connections have been made, we can then establish how best to work together.
Within my role I’m able to highlight to students why it’s so important to make links with employers now whilst they’re at university, but I can also show employers the fantastic students we have and explain how they can benefit their company.
“I can’t envisage my life without music or bands”
Employers will always say that qualifications are great, but I also know they’re keen to see that graduates have really been involved with their university – whether that’s engaging with the Student Development Award, or joining one of the many clubs or societies!
Outside work, I’m a total rock chick. I taught myself how to drum when I crewed with Motörhead, and I’m the biggest AC/DC fan.
I’m currently working on a festival for a local charity called Common Ground in the New Forest, which raises money for the local community – it’s a two day event with different bands and it’s my job to make sure we have all the right sound and lighting equipment, and link in with the community. Organising festivals is really hard work – you don’t sleep much and it’s months in the making. But I can’t ever envisage my life without music or bands – I just love everybody having a good time.
