Bringing legacy to life contribute to our world-leading research
Welcome! Bournemouth University (BU) is a charity, and a vibrant, young institution. Our talented academics undertake research in fields as diverse as dementia care, marine archaeology, and Sumatran orangutan conservation. As a university we rely on philanthropic income, including legacies, to support our projects and are grateful for every penny we receive. We are passionate about working with young people, and committed to using our research to help others. Here are just two examples of projects being undertaken in 2017-2020:
Improving outcomes
for hip replacement patients BU’s Orthopaedic Research Institute was launched in 2015, and its research is already changing lives. The institute’s overall objective is to produce a better outcome for each patient, whether that is reducing pain, speeding up recovery following orthopaedic surgery, or preventing the need for surgical interventions. Orthopaedic conditions such as osteoarthritis are incredibly painful and can be debilitating, and the Institute wants to help all patients to live a full and happy life.
Conserving wildlife
and tropical habitats in Indonesia In rainforests and tropical forests all across the world, deforestation, human activities and climate change are having a huge impact on both vulnerable ecosystems and the wildlife that depend on them for survival. For the last few years, researchers and students at BU have been working in the remote forests of North Sumatra to find out what these changes mean on the ground, and the impact on species including orangutans, gibbons and elephants.
Our faculties Bournemouth University’s origins as a technical college date back to the 1900s, and we are proud to have been part of Dorset life for over 100 years. We have four faculties: Faculty of Health & Social Sciences We work with over one third of Local Health Authorities in the UK, providing nurses, midwives, ambulance technicians and other allied health professionals for the NHS.
Faculty of Science & Technology Home to our renowned archaeology department, and also undertaking world-leading research into face recognition, prosthetic limb design, and wider engineering applications.
Faculty of Media & Communication BU is a leading university for computer animation (you will see examples of our graduates’ work in nearly all Hollywood blockbusters), and we also work with local hospitals to devise virtual reality training tools for surgeons.
Faculty of Management This faculty provides our marketing and accountancy courses, and many of our sports-based research projects. Our academics analyse athletic prowess in both able-bodied and disabled individuals, and work with top sports clubs on performance measures.
What will Bournemouth University use my legacy for? Legacies are very important to us, and they support our work in lots of ways. Generous donors have requested that their legacies are used for new buildings and facilities, academic research, student welfare or faculty projects. We encourage donors to think carefully about their gift and not to be too project specific when making a bequest, as some of our current exciting initiatives might have come to an end by the time we receive legacies.
