Hi Everyone! This guide is here to introduce you to SUBU, the Students’ Union at Bournemouth University; and everything that we can offer you to make your time at BU unforgettable! As a BU student you are automatically part of the Students’ Union and SUBU is here to help you get the very best out of your university experience: whether you want to represent other students on academic and non-academic issues, hitchhike across the globe for charity, or just have a great night out at The Old Fire Station with your friends. Getting involved in SUBU is a great way to learn new skills, enhance your employability, and most importantly to make new friends and have fun! As you flick through this guide, you’ll find out

exactly what SUBU is, what we offer, and how you can get involved. We’re also here to provide support and advice on any queries you may have: from housing and finance to personal concerns. SUBU is run by both students and fulltime staff and is headed up by us; the Full-Time Officers who were elected by the students of BU back in March 2014. Our job is to represent the student voice (that’s you) to the university and on a national level to ensure that your voice gets heard. You’ll see us in your induction talks and around campus but you can contact us anytime either online or simply by popping into the SUBU office.

In the meantime, enjoy your arrivals fortnight!

Chloe, Ellie, Reece and Peter 3

Part 1 - Hello!

WHAT IS SUBU ABOUT? SUBU is designed to be run by you. By becoming a BU student, you are automatically a member of your Students’ Union, and we couldn’t be happier to welcome you. As students, you define the direction we take, giving you complete control over how life changing your student experience at BU can be. SUBU is independent from the University, so although most of the time we work positively and collaboratively with BU, we also work on holding BU to account on your behalf.

SUBU follows 5 main ideas, we call them strategic themes, to make sure you get the very best out of us: A MAJOR COLLECTIVE FORCE FOR ALL STUDENTS From hundreds of students going on a charity hitchhike and raising thousands of pounds, or the 700 student reps coming together to improve your course.

HELPING STUDENTS TO REALISE THEIR POTENTIAL From building an amazing CV through volunteering opportunities, or even running in the SUBU elections.

CREATING FRIENDSHIPS Uni is quite possibly the best time of your life, and we are here to make sure you enjoy it with life-long friends by your side.

UNDERSTOOD AND RECOGNISED & MORE ACCESSIBLE AND APPROACHABLE TO ALL STUDENTS

VISION:

BY 2016, SUBU WILL MAKE A POSITIVE IMPACT UPON EVERY BU STUDENT’S JOURNEY.

6

There’s incredible diversity at BU and we want to make sure that everyone has their say and feels valued – there’s 700 student reps who represent your views to the BU.

ETHICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL Green initiatives underpin everything we do; from the paper we print on to the t-shirts worn by the staff in our bar.

SUBU is run by students and staff and is led by your four full time elected officers: Chloe, Peter, Ellie and Reece. Everything SUBU does is about improving your experience at University, and our vision and values influence every decision we make.

We are a non-profit organization and every penny made in The Old Fire Station, our bars and shops goes back to improving the services that we can provide for you. This includes things like the Students’ Union media, Nerve, or allowing you to set up your own club or society.

So, you have your accommodation sorted, you’re enrolled onto your course, and you’ve already blown your budget shopping for your arrival. Now let’s take a walk on the wild side and do something completely new. 12

There are nearly 18,000 students at BU, and SUBU is here to help you meet them. You can quite literally skydive, trek in Morocco, edit a magazine, run your own club or society, run a campus-wide campaign, and even help lead your Students’ Union, a £3 million turnover charitable organisation.

You don’t need us to tell you how competitive it is in the job market. Employers are always telling us they look for those ‘extra’ elements that make you impossible to ignore. So for your own benefit, take us for all we’ve got and make sure you’re the cream of the crop.

See your university life as like a cake – it’s only as good as the ingredients, so don the apron and get cooking (and yes, we do have a Baking Society) These next pages will guide you through every single opportunity we’ve got going, so get your notepad and start planning.

Be a partner in your uni experience Student Reps exist to make your experience better. There’s one for every 20 students at BU, so a rep is never far away! You can recognize a student rep by their distinctive purple hoody. At the beginning of the year you and your course mates will elect the rep responsible for representing views on your course. This is important to ensure they are representing students’ best interests. Your newly appointed rep will go on to receive training from us here at SUBU to equip them with the skills to ENSURE YOUR VOICE IS HEARD. This will involve both the issues affecting you on your course and the great things about your experience at BU. A Student Reps first port of call is to talk to students and gather opinions on a variety of issues. They will then take this to meetings with course leaders and university staff and feed back to you what happened as a result.

The rep system gives every student at BU the chance to speak out and make every student’s experience a better one. 14

Get Involved

SUBU has a duty to respect the local community and the residents in it, and we take this very seriously. Our goal is a Bournemouth that is not only fun and exciting for Bournemouth University students, but safe and peaceful for its residents too.

Community Wardens We work in conjunction with a number of organisations in Bournemouth: Bournemouth Borough Council, Dorset Police, the Winton Community Service and the Arts University Bournemouth to appoint Student Community Wardens who work in the local areas, where lots of students live. Last year our 4 wardens walked more than 50 miles around Bournemouth meeting both residents and students and building relationships and this year we have 9 wardens who are sure to carry on even more great work.

Campaigns We run a number of campaigns throughout the year designed to improve students’ relationships in their local community, including: Lock it or Lose it; encouraging students to make sure they keep their homes secure. and, Sshh!; ensuring students are quiet and respectful on nights out.

30

At SUBU we are very focused on our responsibility to be green and ethical in everything that we do. So much so that last year we were awarded the Gold Standard NUS Green Impact Award for the second year running.

Get Involved With Green... There’s loads of ways to be a part of SUBU’s green initiatives, from joining one of SUBU Volunteering’s conservation projects, to joining SUBU’s Green Taskforce or even running in the Part Time Officer Elections as Environmental Officer! You can find out more about all these green initiatives and more online at: www.subu.org.uk

GETTING AROUND

The Students’ Union at Talbot Campus Now you’ve seen all the things you can get involved in, you’ll need to be able to find us. We’re here to assist you with any enquiries, with a wide range of services on offer. SUBU has its HQ at Talbot campus and we’d like to welcome each and every one of you. Just because you might study at a partner college or Lansdowne Campus doesn’t mean you can’t head up and use the facilities on Talbot Campus. In fact, we encourage it! You’ll also find the Student Village here at Talbot Campus, which is just a stone’s throw away to help you feel comfortable when settling in. Campus is clearly signposted, and remember, the Welcome Crew will be on hand to direct you to where you need to go during your first two weeks here. You will meet them when you move in and can ask them anything – just look out for the Welcome Crew t-shirts.

GETTING AROUND There’s always loads going on in Bournemouth and with everything right on your doorstep, we have plenty of student friendly ways of getting from A - B. Cycling Once you’ve remembered your helmet, BU provides locked bike shelters and sell locks and lights in the student shop for riding at night. There is a direct cycle path between Talbot and Lansdowne campus so it’s a quick and easy way to get around.

Buses The University have a specialised bus service that runs regularly throughout the day across Bournemouth. Fares are cheap, with discounted 10 trip cards available. But, if you need to head somewhere that the uni buses don’t cover, Bournemouth also has several other services that cover all areas.

Trains Bournemouth train station is located opposite Dorchester House halls of residence and next to ASDA. There are a number of bus stops outside, with a vast network of nationwide travel available at the station.

38

Cars (If you have to) Parking permits for both Lansdowne or Talbot car parks are available to purchase from the university. However, these are strictly limited and most roads surrounding the campuses have strict parking restrictions, so you’re probably better off using one of the other travel options. For more information on permits, call AskBU on 01202 961 961.

Getting home late at night Our student safety campaign; ‘Bournemouth Students Together’ urges students to stay in groups whilst walking late at night in town. Bournemouth is generally safe, but it’s a good idea to ‘never leave a man behind’ and ‘always look out for each other’. Save a taxi number on your phone, like United Taxi’s - 01202 556677 and remember, before you go out, check; keys, money, phone, how will I get home?

Like ‘Bournemouth Students Together’ on Facebook to upload your team pictures on a night out, in your homes or on the beach anywhere you want!
