GET AHEAD WITH AN APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMME Twenty-three young apprentices were able to gain experience in the College’s commercial facilities last year whilst being able to earn and learn under one roof. Apprentices were placed according to their industry in a variety of College’s departments, including: • Urban Flavours restaurant for catering & hospitality • Urban Serenity salon for beauty therapy • Urban Elegance for hairdressing • Advice Zone for customer service • Business Development Team for business administration • Learning Resource Centre for IT One of the apprentices, Amy Price-Bennett from Rednal who worked in Urban Serenity beauty salon commented: ‘I chose apprenticeship as I felt it would
be beneficial to gain experience in a realistic work environment. I was able to gain experience, earn money and a qualification at the same time, which all helps with career progression. Urban Serenity is a commercial salon just like any other and has given me the opportunity to develop a circle of regular clients and develop my customer relationship skills at the same time.’ To qualify for an apprenticeship, you need to find a job first which you can search for at www.apprenticeships. gov.uk. in 2012; an exhibition which presents the work of the very best new talent from the Education Network, with graduates in graphic design, visual communication, advertising, digital media, illustration, photography and other commercial creative arts. Throughout his incredible journey, Adam feels that education has played an important role in his life, saying:
He said:
The effort and commitment of tutors at Bournville “ Education has shaped everything about my life in “ College helped me to understand what I wanted from the last six years. It’s been a fantastic journey, each my education experience. They helped me to love what I do to the point that there is no line or distinction between what I call spare and work time.” At Bournville College, Adam was able to develop his skills and experience within the art industry as well as create long lasting memories. As the BTEC courses are assessed through a student’s practical coursework as opposed to formal exams, Adam was able to develop his hands-on industry skills whilst producing a portfolio of his own work which will serve him as evidence when applying for jobs in the future. I received excellent support from “ my tutors not only on my course but
also with the UCAS application process where they helped me every step of the way.” Following on his success at Bournville College, Adam has been selected to represent Nottingham Trent University at the D&AD New Blood Festival
stage has directly influenced the next, and of course the journey never ends. I have been able to work on a number of projects which will all benefit me in the work environment. As well as volunteering as the Crocus Gallery I have worked as production manager on an advert for Clarity in Communication.” Adam hopes to continue his education by studying a Master’s Degree in Puppetry and Digital Animation at Nottingham Trent University followed by a PGCE at Wolverhampton University. With the world’s fast moving technology, his skills and experience will benefit him greatly as he seeks a career in teaching Computer Graphics Animation, maintaining an active role within the graphics industry whilst inspiring young people. If you have a flair for art, Bournville College is the place to come to. Our state-of-the-art campus offers a number of art, photography and media suites, enabling art and design students to develop an all round experience of this industry and prepare them for higher education or employment.
