What is an apprenticeship? An apprenticeship programme provides a structured paid national training route within the workplace which is supported with ongoing professional development. You will have the opportunity to undertake a ‘portfolio’ of skills and qualifications that will allow you to progress within your work environment and or progress to both further and higher education, if necessary. An apprentice is an employee within a company or organisation, earning a wage and working alongside experienced staff to gain job specific skills designed around the needs of the employer/company. Apprentices are employed with a contract of employment for a minimum of 30 hours a week, for a minimum of one year. If you have joined straight from school or when you are new to the job you are doing you will be an Intermediate Apprentice. You may move onto an Advanced Apprenticeship following successful completion of your Level 2 programme providing your job role is suitable. An apprentice will normally have one day a week at college to undertake the technical part of the Apprenticeship qualification. The below table explains in brief what are the components of an apprenticeship;

Why choose an apprenticeship? As an apprentice, you will be employed, earn a wage and work alongside experienced staff to gain job specific skills. You will learn in the workplace whilst gaining qualifications and earning money at the same time. This will help you to gain the skills, confidence and expertise to progress in your chosen area. Throughout your time as an apprentice you will have meetings with members of staff from the College, targets, coursework and checks in place to make sure that you are happy with your apprenticeship and to check on your progress.

After finishing, the majority of apprentices (85%) will stay in employment, with two-thirds (64%) staying with the same employer.*

A third (32%) of all former apprentices had received a promotion within 12 months of finishing, and of those in work, three quarters (75%) reported taking on more responsibility in their job.*

Employers think that qualified apprentices are 15% more employable than those with other qualifications.**

I’ve really enjoyed the apprenticeship, the working and learning as well as using my skills. Being paid was a big plus and motivation for me. I was delighted to be offered the permanent position of IT/Data Manager at the end of my apprenticeship as I love the job..

The apprenticeship scheme definitely helped us as it’s often the experience of the working environment that young people lack, rather than the enthusiasm and qualifications. There was lots of support from Bournville College, both for us as an employer and for the apprentice..

Before setting up his own studio, Leonardo da Vinci spent six years learning his craft as an Apprentice. More than 500 years later, apprenticeships are still a great way to get your break in arts, media and publishing.

Bournville College offers the following apprenticeships in the Creative Industries sector: • Art & Design • Creative & Digital Media • Design

The apprenticeship has given me a good window of opportunity and has opened up many useful contacts for my future development. It is a way to learn about the industry whilst building skills for the workplace.

Sally Edwards Apprenticeship in Creative Industries

The College is a perfect working environment for young people to practically learn, develop and achieve a qualification. We needed to employ someone with a passion for the digital sector and Sally has done very well. She has evolved so much during the apprenticeship and is a great role model to other aspiring apprentices.

You’ve spent most of your life so far in education, and by doing an apprenticeship you’ll be taking your education a stage further. But it doesn’t stop there. Training continues throughout our lives as we take on new jobs, develop our skills or even change career.

Bournville College offers the following apprenticeships in the Education sector: • Supporting Teaching & Learning in Schools

Being able to work and learn at the same time means I have the benefit of learning from those already in the profession through observing and also from building professional relationships.

Steven Littleton Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools apprenticeship

It has been brilliant to see both apprentices develop through the course. It has been a learning curve for us too, but we were able to offer the necessary practical aspects of the course through teaching via a mentoring and coaching approach. Overall, I am very impressed and have encountered no issues. Bournville College really does cater for the needs of its students and for the community.

Making things (manufacturing) and making things work (engineering) is what apprenticeships in this sector are all about. Naturally it’s an extremely broad field, so there’s a good range of apprenticeships to choose from. Some of the main manufacturing industries covered include textiles, furniture, metals and printing. You could be doing anything from operating huge machines in a factory to working with hand tools in a small workshop.

Bournville College offers the following apprenticeships in the Engineering & Manufacturing Technologies sector: • • • • • •

The apprenticeship was fun and I enjoyed the fact that I am more in the workplace. I would definitely recommend the apprenticeship to others, without the scheme I may not have secured my job.

We looked at the apprenticeship scheme, firstly for engineering and administration. As the initial process gave us no problems, we approached Bournville College for the third apprentice. I have already recommended the apprenticeship scheme with Bournville College to other people and employers, and so far we have taken two of our apprentices on who have finished the scheme..

I would definitely recommend an apprenticeship through Bournville College as you get to learn and earn at the same time and it provides the foundations for your future. Employers look for experience and qualifications now, and with the apprenticeship you gain both.

MOLLIE BEST

Apprenticeships provide employment and training for the local community, and provide good working relationships which invest in the future of the apprentices. We could not have started up properly without them and Bournville College assisted with their achievements through the interview panel and collaborating with Trust Local Care from the start.

I really enjoy working in hairdressing, my apprenticeship and the role I play. I’m hopeful to stay at Chantilly Lace for the foreseeable future and have definitely grown with the business.

Nicola Lee

Apprenticeship in Barbering

Nicola was the perfect candidate with my need to expand my staffing and long term plan to open another salon. I’ve been able to train Nicola in my personal way which means now I can trust Nicola in my absence.

Chantell Dugmore

Chantilly Lace Salon Owner

I really wanted to get into a work environment as I had previous voluntary experience in the area. I’ve tried to learn as much as possible and I would recommend to other people for both the qualification and experience.

MAZAR IQBAL

Apprenticeship in Warehousing & Storage

We were at the stage where we needed younger blood, extra help in the warehouse, and so made sense to offer a young person the opportunity to progress in the company. Because it worked so well the first time, we have now taken on an extra 2 apprentices. It works well by giving them a chance, learn the trade and the sky is the limit if they have the effort and determination to succeed.

Life after an apprenticeship After completing your apprenticeship, there are a number of different routes to look into. With mutual consent between you and your employer, you can stay on as a member of staff or can progress onto the next level of an apprenticeship. If however, you would like a different challenge, you can instead use the qualification and experience gained to look for other routes, sectors, job vacancies or training. Many apprentices also look to the scheme before deciding on their step. Some would like to progress to university but like to gain work experience first, going onto university after completing your apprenticeship is another route, if you choose. But, don’t just take our word for it...

During my time as a volunteer, my manager mentioned the apprenticeship scheme. When it was explained that I would get paid to learn and gain experience from doing practical work, it was an option I couldn’t refuse. I am really happy that I completed my Level 2 & 3 apprenticeships; I was able to learn so much whilst working with others and learning from them. Bournville College really helped me during my apprenticeship.

Nikita Jeffries

Apprentice, Royal Orthopaedic Hospital

I had previously completed the Level 2 with Bournville College and I knew that I wanted to complete my Level 3. For me an apprenticeship is perfect as you are able to physically do the work rather than sat in a classroom. An Apprenticeship is great, everything that I am taught at College I am able to put into practice and the portfolio that I create and the questions during the course relate to my job reiterating what I do. I would definitely recommend an apprenticeship to others and I am very glad of the role as it is a lot more hands on and practical.
