West Midlands Participant of the Year

A Motor Vehicle student, Ryan Delaney, has won the West Midlands Participant of the Year award from Sport England for his attendance and progression at the Bournville College Boxing Satellite club sessions with Northfield Boxing Club. Ryan attended all but one of the sessions that ran weekly throughout the 2013/14 academic year, showing great commitment to attending regularly. Over the course of the year his boxing skills developed immensely and he was invited along to attend club training sessions by the boxing coaches so he could further his skills.

3

The award Ryan was nominated for was for great commitment, motivation and progression through attending sport sessions, all attributes which Ryan has shown in abundance. In September, Ryan was presented with his award by representatives from Sport England and Sport Birmingham during a boxing taster session at the college. He received a personalised trophy and a pair of boxing gloves signed by GB boxer Frankie Gavin. The successful boxing sessions continue to run this year, on every Tuesday 4-5pm in the Sports Hall. The sessions are free to attend and are open to all.

5 Film Reviews Pride

Beautifully crafted, wildly entertaining and a few tears of joy.

By: Dana Archer

A2 Level Film Studies Student

This is a film to be proud of as it’s a fantastically funny film. However do not be put off by the elusive phrase “feel good film” as for anyone who watches films knows that means the film is going to seem funny but will have depressed you by the end. Although Pride is actually a feel good film and you leave the cinema with a smile on your face. Newcomer Ben Schnetzer joins the all star stellar cast which includes the uncompromisingly funny Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton (Still on the rebuild to stardom following the tragically tedious Nanny Mcphee, which she had the misfortune of featuring in) and Sherlock’s Andrew Scott who also delivers a wonderful performance (as always). Anyway, Pride is a fabulous film about the creating of the LGSM (Lesbians and Gays support miners) which meant that the socially unaccepted homosexuals joined the Miners in the battle to get rights in a series of protests and campaigns. Warm, funny and brilliantly British... This film will warm the very hearts of everyone.

The Expendables 3 Bang, Crash, Smack The expendables are back By: Dana Archer -

A2 Level Film Studies Student

After the unimpressive Expendables and the mildly entertaining Expendables 2, I was naturally sceptical about watching the newest instalment of the golden oldies action franchise. However, I was impressed. Stallone and the crew have still got it. With the new members including the legendary, Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson, Antonio Banderas and the newly released from jail Wesley Snipes, this really is an action flick not to be missed. The only downside is the new recruits which include the dreadful Ronda Rousey and Glen Powell who are unfortunately going to be in the next film. Oh well at least Bieber isn’t in on the action (we hope it stays that way).

7 Book review

By: Tiffany Guest - Level 3 Hospitality Student Memories define us. So what if you lost yours every time you went to sleep? Your name, your identity, your past, even the people you love — all forgotten overnight. And the one person you trust may only be telling you half of the story... BEFORE I GO TO SLEEP, BY S.J WATSON

Welcome to Christine’s life. A popular book this year is the enticing Before I Go To Sleep by S.J Watson. This book is a psychological thriller which is both a Sunday Times and New York Times bestseller. The protagonist - Christine has anterograde amnesia where she cannot create new memories after her accident. She cannot recall the recent past, her only memories are from her childhood. The novel follows her as she tries to remember her memories of the past days from a journal she has been writing. Her husband, Ben, tells her she had a terrible accident but not what happened exactly. With the help of her Doctor and relics from her past, she will doubt the truth about the life she was told she lived and who her husband really is. This is a gripping novel that has an intense plot line that will leave you hanging with the end of every chapter. With unexpected twists and shocking truths, whether you’re a fan of thrillers or not, I recommend that you read this as it is one of the best modern thrillers out there. The movie (which is already out in cinemas) has a cast of Mark Strong, Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth. Both the book and the movie are worth reading and watching.

Learner Voice The ‘Your Voice’ feedback form is widely available to students both online and in hard copy. Students are able to feedback, anonymously if required and a response will be given within an agreed time frame. The Principal regularly meets students at tutorials through link visits. The learner voice is extremely well represented. The College has developed a clear strategic approach to learner engagement and takes learners’ views seriously. Feedback is given to managers, staff and students who ensure that appropriate action is taken to improve our service. A wide range of activities are used through which the student voice can be heard which includes the Learner Voice Conference and focus groups for students. The Learner Voice Conference is an annual event attended by students of all ages. Outside speakers are invited to engage and motivate young people and opportunities to feed back to managers across the College are provided.

Learners’ views are collected and considered very thoroughly and they make a difference’ (Ofsted 2014) Student forums are organised on a regular basis, for example the SLOs (Student Liaison Officers) have weekly discussion groups about topical issues. These are well attended and offer young people the opportunity to extend their knowledge about current affairs and feedback accordingly.

For the drizzle topping • juice 1½ lemons • 85g caster sugar

Method

• Heat oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4. • Beat together 225g softened unsalted butter and 225g caster sugar until pale and creamy, then add 4 eggs, one at a time, slowly mixing through.

• Sift in 225g flour, then add the finely grated zest of 1 lemon and mix until well combined. • Line a loaf tin (8 x 21cm) with greaseproof paper, then spoon in the mixture and level the top with a spoon. • Bake for 45-50 mins until a thin skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean. • While the cake is cooling in its tin, mix together the juice of 1 1/2 lemons and 85g caster sugar to make the drizzle. • Prick the warm cake all over with a skewer or fork, then pour over the drizzle – the juice will sink in and the sugar will form a lovely, crisp topping. • Leave in the tin until completely cool, then remove and serve.
