Issue 1 Spring 2013

Welcome... Mary Sarpong from Kings Heath

During the course, we were encouraged to develop ideas for setting up our own beauty salons. The tutors really helped us and through their experiences were able to show that we could follow in their footsteps. When I completed the course, I was ready to set up my own business - Heaven for Ladies - mobile beauty salon which is going really well. In the years to come I hope to turn it into a family business for my 10 year old daughter.

…to the first edition of Bournville College’s alumni newsletter to keep you informed about what’s new at Bournville College and help you keep in touch with us. When we wrote to you with an invitation to join our alumni society, we promised to choose one person to receive a selection of prizes. If you have a suggestion, feedback or a story to share, please send it to alumni@bournville.ac.uk.

What do you think about your experience at Bournville College?

Sammie writes her destiny... Twenty one year old Sammie Farrell from West Heath has found a new inspiration for her future career thanks to coming to Bournville College. Having changed her mind about the career she chose for her future, the College supported her in selecting three new A Levels for the following year. Thanks to the help from the tutors, Sammie’s self-confidence grew beyond her expectations which made her realise that there were opportunities available beyond the course to help her develop her ever growing interest in writing. After contacting the marketing department at Bournville College, Sammie became the College’s unofficial blogger, leading on online discussions on a range of subjects. In summer 2010 she was also given a once in the lifetime opportunity to participate in an international student conference in South Korea. Travelling abroad for the first time in her life, she summed up her experience: ‘It’s quite strange but amazing at the same time that my very first trip abroad involved a long haul flight with my college. I absolutely loved the experience and made friends from all over the world.’

Sammie left Bournville College in 2011, having achieved excellent results on A2 Levels in Sociology, Psychology and English Language and Literature but also with a completely new perspective and ambitions for her future. She is now studying History at Derby University but continues with developing her writing skills further. She’s been volunteering during the summer of 2012 in the College’s marketing department again, developing her skills in creative writing and journalism. She reflected: ‘My ever growing interest in writing has been able to flourish during the summer work experience at Bournville College. I really enjoyed learning tricks of the public relations industry, working with the marketing team and generally being part of the College that I once attended and still love.’ Jana Smidkova, Marketing Manager at Bournville College commented: ‘Sammie is a perfect example of someone who is eager to explore all avenues in order to learn, gain experience and enhance her career prospects

Sammie Farrell at the end of her studies. She was able to provide excellent support to the team during the busy summer period and I am proud of all the achievements of this former Bournville student. I am certain she will go far in her career.’ Share you success story with us by contacting Stephanie Jones on stephanie.jones@bournville.ac.uk.
