Wade? It’s kind of creepy, actually. The last thing I ever want to be perceived as is a spokesperson for pregnancy. I’m quite fortunate in that I had a good pregnancy, I wasn’t very sick, and I really enjoyed the experience, but most of the women I’ve spoken to have had a really difficult time being pregnant, and the idea that anybody would be forced to stay in that situation is so reprehensible. It’s a nightmare. I’m surrounded by parents who are fiercely pro-abortion, though, and really, this is how kids should be conceived and birthed: deliberately and intentionally, with parents who are committed to the process. The collapse of Roe is also going to hit artificial reproductive technology, because the same people who believe personhood begins at conception obviously have a problem with a bunch of frozen embryos sitting in a laboratory. And that’s my story. That’s how I had my child. So there’s a lot of concern in the scientific community around, how is this going to impact this industry?

Do you
feel like those experiences changed how you see your own body? It definitely did. I’ve historically been a person who’s a little detached from my body. I’m not very connected to or grounded in the physical, necessarily—but in getting pregnant, it felt like my body was suddenly this science experiment. And I really, really loved that. I loved experiencing the baby growing in me, and all the ways my body changed were shocking. I’ve always seen my body as sort of a vehicle—when I was younger, it was definitely a vehicle for sex and drugs, and then it became more of a vehicle for carrying my brain around. But now I just feel like I have so much more respect for my body in this funny way, where it exists for this noble purpose of comforting my child.
