Editor’s Note “Elegance is not the prerogative of those who have just escaped from adolescence, but of those who have already taken possession of their future.” --Coco Chanel The modern woman is expected to be a superwoman, juggling career, family, and friends, all with the poise and elegance of a ballerina. Although, we may not have the grace of a ballerina (I have been known to walk into the odd wall), a woman should project elegance and style. My most significant fashion influence was my grandmother, who was widely recognized for her grace and style. It is not surprising that with a role model such as this, I was raised to appreciate the importance of appearance and good taste. I have had the opportunity to travel the world, from Europe, the Middle East and the Americas; one universal theme that I gleaned is that elegance is synonymous with femininity.

LIFE"STYLE

Fashion Thinking BY!MARIA-CRISTINA"TREPCEA""""|"""!ILLUSTRATION!BY!PIA"SOLOMON

Fashion seems to be gaining more and more territory in our lives, as it finds more and more gates through which to enter our thoughts, from the ever present ads to its increasingly frequent presence in the wri(en media and film. The last cinematographic year has been quite notably preoccupied with productions focusing on the fashion industry, from the glamorous and chic bio-pic “Coco Avant Chanel” to the controversial but totally stylish documentary “The September Issue”. These films not only represent an expression of the increasing a(ention we pay to trends and style, but an expression of our curiosity about fashion, our willingness to understand its mechanisms and its significance. Many times it seems that fashion is characterised and perceived as being exclusive, not for everybody, for the skinny and gorgeous or, for the rich and famous, etc. Indeed fashion is an intimidating industry; it relies on slippery and abstract notions such as aesthetics and beauty. In the past fashion was the restricted possession of the elite, it was a symbol of prestige and social and financial status. However, with the industrial revolution and the development of the middle class, fashion underwent a process of democratization. Although fashion democracy as any democracy is a utopia, the perspective on fashion did change, it became an a(ainable ideal. More importantly, however, fashion’s true revolution emerged as a consequence of the development of subcultures. Subcultures represent urban communities created by the coming together of individuals with the purpose of sharing certain interests, from music to aesthetic and philosophical values. These communities set out a specific take on lifestyle and culture, and with that came a particular way of dressing, from the beatnik’s coat to the punk´s Doc Martens to the 38 38

BoutiqueMagazine.indd 38-39

mod’s mini-skirt. Subcultures began using fashion items as markers of their belonging to a certain community, which changed the way fashion was interpreted and what it could represent and stand for. Since then subcultures have fallen and risen and so have the ideologies they stood for, but the pieces which constituted their specific style entered the fashion consciousness either in latent or active form. And with the impact of England´s fashion queen, Vivienne Westwood, who turned subculture fashion into a fashion cult, there´s more freedom than ever before. Furthermore the work of avant-garde designers like Jean-Paul Gaultier or Gareth Pugh seems to suggest a cultural manifestation of open-mindness. However, for the most recent d eve l o p m e nt s in street style we must be grateful to the builders of its ideolgy, the fashion bloggers. Fashion bloggers, like my personal favourites The Sartorialist and Garance Dore , transformed expectations and interpretations of fashion, they offer a fresh perspective which has individuality and creativity as the central focus. This new point of view represents a beautiful concept- fashion and apparel as an opportunity for self-expression and personal-experimentation, similar to a daily art-project. This appears to be the most optimistic and friendly take on fashion, one which implies acceptance and curiosity, joviality and self-humour. BY!ELANA"SOLOMON Princess and international style icon Raya Al Khalifa is a living dream with a fabulous wardrobe to match! The Bahraini born Londoner has spent the majority of her life spli(ing her time between her homes in Bahrain, London, and Florida. Her fashion is eclectic and timeless with influences from all over the world contributing to her unique and inspirational style. How would you describe your style? RA: Being Middle Eastern and having a good dose of Floridian glamour injected to my aesthetic tastes means I really love opulence and shiny bright pre(y things. The Londoner in me, however, pulls some of it back, creating the perfect blend so as not to make me look too tropical or typical or even tragic‌ I hope! Who are your style icons? RA: My grandmother, who was always immaculate, and Coco Chanel for her shi' in the way modern women dress. What inspires your style? RA - Location! I can get away with different things in Europe than America and the same for the Middle East. So my location inspires me. Art, subculture, and fashion shows inspire me as well! I’m always ready and willing to try something that seems a bit avantgarde before it does become very commercial. Do you prefer Middle Eastern fashion or Western Style? RA: I genuinely love and am inspired by both. 46

BoutiqueMagazine.indd 46-47

What is your favourite country to shop in? RA: America, nothing beats service in America! Do you prefer Department stores or Boutiques? RA: Department stores What are your favourite places to shop? RA: Harrods, Neiman Marcus, and Saks Fi'h Avenue (the la(er two in Florida of course). Do you prefer high street trends or couture fashion? RA: I love H&M, and Zara. You will always find me mixing contemporary designers like DVF with higher end labels and high street, its all too tempting for me‌ but without a doubt my higher end pieces do stand the test of time both physically and style-wise. Who is your favourite designer/brand? RA: It really changes season to season. This season I’m in love with Giamba(ista Valli’s gorgeous pe(icoat dresses. I also like the Prada spring/summer collection, as it looks so light, breezy and delicate with the wrinkled disheveled look but with glamorous timeless silhoue(es. I’m still in love with a piece I have from last years Versace summer collection, a beige harem pant ensemble which has been carried forward to this summer season by other designers. I also like Alexander McQueen and Bo(ega Vene(a, and Fendi. However, when looking for a fun easy dress, Pucci is always on my mind! This summer I will definitely be purchasing from the Louis Vui(on collection! The colour pale(e this summer is gorgeous! Have you ever designed your own clothes? RA: Yes, being 5_11 I sometimes feel I need to take ma(ers into my own hands. I hate when I fall in love with a dress to only find that it is the size of a shirt on me! From your wardrobe, what are your favourite pieces? RA: Anything with feathers, my beloved handbags, my knee-high boots, my long girly dresses. If you had to give up all your belongings but could only keep one piece, what would you choose? RA: Hands down, I would choose my Chanel purse. I admired my mother’s and grandmother’s throughout my childhood and I’ll never forget the joy I felt when purchasing my own! It is a lovely and classic purse.

PEOPLE"WATCHING Introducing... Brazilian socialite and trendse.er Angelle Vielma. As we do in every issue of Boutique, we love to apply our considerable investigative skills to uncover an internationally renowned fashion diva as she engages in activities that are not so “ chi chi ”. Recently, we caught up with socialite and sometime model/actress Angelle Vielma. Boutique learns from a mutual friend that Angelle, who calls home the Ipanema section of Rio de Janiero and maintains a pied a terre in Paris, that she will be stopping in Sea.le, Washington. She agreed to allow us to shadow her. For you readers who are not entirely familiar with American geography, Sea.le is on the upper Pacific coast of the U.S. and is be.er known for its enormous trees and salmon than it is for its haute couture. 8:45 AM Met Angelle for breakfast in the lobby of the historic and quite majestic FairmontHotel. I order a la(e and a croissant. Angelle orders an Espresso. That explains her 00 figure. Always chic, she is dressed in black leather leggings, a long black-sleeved tee and a fi(ed military jacket. But will she be able to navigate the city in 5-inch heels? 9: 00 AM Angelle gracefully removes her Manolo’s and replaces them with the new comfortable Shakoha ankle boot, by Anna Sui for Sam Adelman. Why wasn’t I so intelligent? She skilfully applies deep red lipstick (Chanel of course) to her perfectly shaped lips and sprays a bit of Chanel No. 5. What else does she have in her Mui Mui bag? We are off. 09:15 We stroll down Fi'h Avenue past Feraggomo, Cartier, Hermes, Gucci etc, etc, etc. Um! Fi'h Avenue. Sea(le. Who knew? We pop into Armani. Angelle makes an almost mental note that this collection is entirely different from the Milan line. She tries on a rain hat. Of course, it looks great. She makes a quick purchase and as if on cue, it begins to drizzle. Is she prescient? Magically, she removes a Burberry umbrella from her bag and places the rain hat on my head. Thank you, Angelle 09:45 We take a ferry across Puget Sound to Bainbridge Island. It is a bit chilly but the ride is 54refreshing. Angelle pulls out of her magic bag a

caramel - coloured cashmere patina. A'er a 30-minute ride, we head to Winslow, which is the historic section of the Island. It is rustically charming, filled with li(le boutiques that showcase up - and - coming clothing designers, jewellers and artists. We enter one of the many vintage stores where her trained eye discovers a fabulous fur gilet. Mental note; Angelle’s taste is eclectic. 13:00 Stop in Sea(le Coffee for a coffee to go and take a stroll through the Bloedel Reserve. The various gardens, ponds and meadows are breathtaking. Reminder-next time I visit Sea(le bring comfortable shoes. 14:00 Back to the Ferry. I can’t believe what time it is. As my stomach growls, I appreciatively realize that we are in front of IL Terrazzo Carmin, one of the chicest Italian restaurants in Sea(le. It emanates the sumptuous odours of basil and garlic. Despite the drizzle, we sit outside under an awning and enjoy the view. Lunch turns into a twohour, much needed, rest fest 16 :00 Rush, rush, rush. Angelle has an appointment for a fi(ing. She unexpectedly must a(end a charitable event for the Gates Foundation tomorrow night and need s something to wear. Where else would she go but Nordstrom’s, which has its flagship store in Sea(le. The couture Ralph Lauren gown that she chooses could not look be(er. 18 :00 Pike Place Market. This is a huge outdoor market (one of the oldest and largest in the Country) that has stand a'er stand of fruits, vegetables and of course, fresh fish. She purchases some salmon. A friend of hers, who happens to be a gourmet chef (and a Microso' exec), will prepare dinner for us. 19:00 A quick stop at the hotel to freshen up.
