Round Bowen Challenge

Resident Bruce McTaggart claims victory in gruelling competition

Bowen’s ‘awful’ new tag revealed MARIA SPITALE-LEISK EDITOR

“Tell your friends it’s awful here” – this is now Bowen’s official slogan, so get used to it. The tongue-in-cheek catchphrase is complemented by the island’s official mascot: a hand-drawn deer. It’s all part of Bowen’s new branding which was unveiled – and unanimously endorsed by council – Monday at municipal hall. The fact Bowen’s new identity was not crafted by outsiders, but rather community members who approached the project “with a passion,” was celebrated at the meeting. “This is a Bowen Island project by Bowen Islanders for Bowen Islanders,” said Gordon Ganong, economic development committee chairman. “The last thing anyone wanted was a traditional marketing campaign.” The road to finding Bowen’s new rallying cry started two years ago when the volunteer-run EDC undertook the branding initiative. Extensive research with community members and visitors – conducted by Bowen residents Edward Wachtman and Sheree Johnson, founders of StoryTellings Consulting, an international pre-branding consulting firm – drove the branding process. Five key themes emerged from

engaging Bowen stakeholders, including a strong sense of community and a connection with nature. With this information in hand, the EDC began searching for the right candidate to brand Bowen. The committee received 35 professional submissions from branding experts across North America and was given estimates that

were upwards of $100,000 to develop a brand. In the end the EDC went with homegrown talent in Bowen resident Chris Staples, founder of the award-winning, national advertising agency Rethink – which, along with StoryTellings, provided their services on a pro bono basis. In fact, Bowen’s new identity was developed with min-

imal expense to the municipality, as the EDC solicited $150,000 in professional expertise and cash donations from businesses and individuals. Reflecting on Bowen’s branding journey, Staples, who helped create campaigns for companies such as Coast Capital Savings, Science World, Molson Canadian,

Shaw Communications and A&W Restaurants, said this is the one project that he poured the most amount of research into. This process, said Staples, has allowed him to uncover what is “real and true” about Bowen. Staples opened his presentation to council by explaining how on his walk to town hall Monday he noticed a mish-

mash of municipal branding. A logo on a BIM truck depicted three mountains, while a fire and rescue vehicle displayed a different logo and then when Staples arrived he spotted a heron on the sign outside the hall. “It means I don’t recognize Bowen,” said Staples. “If

Islander claims victory in Round Bowen Challenge MARIA SPITALE-LEISK EDITOR

Bowen Islander Bruce McTaggart, paddling a double surf ski with partner Ian Lowe, earned bragging rights in the gruelling Round Bowen Challenge Saturday, after the duo circumnavigated the island in just over two and a half hours. Cloudy skies in the morning made for comfortable temperatures for the 100 participants from all over B.C. and Washington state who took part in the 16th annual Round Bowen event. Challenge record holder and third-time champion Wes Hammer came across the finish line at 2:36:26 to win the singles category, meanwhile, Norm Hann took the paddle board category with a time of 3:35:41. The 19-kilometre Half Island Challenge was won by a 12-year-old and her dad paddling a double surf ski and crossing the finish line at 1:37:59. The clockwise direction of the race took advantage of the 12 knots of wind blowing from the east. Only one racer was pulled from the race, at his request, due to a leg cramp that impeded his ability to stand on his paddle board. “The conditions were certainly more favorable than last year when more than 13 racers were pulled from the water,” said Brent O’Malley, owner of Bowen Island Sea Kayaking, which hosted the race along with a variety of sponsors. No records were broken this year. The fastest time recorded for the 34 km Round Bowen Challenge remains at just under two and a half hours.

Not so awful island

This week I got my first taste of Bowen’s quirky side, with the unveiling of the island’s new brand. Fortunately, I first heard the tagline “Tell your friends it’s awful here” on the same day I ventured outside of Bowen’s touristy area for the first time – and actually explored the other side of the island. As I gazed out at sweeping views of Howe Sound, I got the sentiment behind the slogan. Islanders are protective of their slice of paradise. Bowen resident Chris Staples, the marketing guru behind the new brand, alluded the island had been going through an identity crisis, during his pitch to council Monday. “If Bowen was a person, that person would be getting their wardrobe in the dark … and changing it every day,” he said. Going forward, Bowen will sport its eccentric character on its sleeve, or T-shirt rather. Those will be for sale shortly, along with postcards and bumper stickers declaring “Tell your friends it’s awful here.” But of course it’s not. It’s commendable so many Bowen residents stepped up and donated their time or expertise to help develop a brand for the island. It shows they take pride in their ‘awful’ community. Voracious young readers, get ready to time travel or head to space this summer vacation in the big tent outside the Bowen Island Public Library. “The Summer Reading Club is a great way to maintain, or even improve reading skills over the summer,” said library supervisor Susan Geist. “The emphasis is on fun, and we work to encourage the enjoyment of books, and the reading of all varieties of material.” There are different literary themes each week of the reading club, which starts next week, such as explore your own backyard, and wander into the past. Children can join in on weekly

activities in the summer reading club tent at the library, or simply focus on recording their daily reading in the provided booklets. At the end of each week, participants can bring their reading passport to the library to collect a sticker and enter the weekly prize draw. The reading club meets on Tuesdays from 12:30 to 2 p.m. starting on July 5 for kids ages five to six. The older kids, ages seven to nine, meet Wednesdays from 12:30 to 2 p.m. starting July 6. The summer reading club kicks off this Saturday, July 2 from noon to 2 p.m with food, entertainment and fun for all ages on the library lawn.

Round Bowen Challenge a great success: BISK

Dear Editor: The Round Bowen Challenge paddle race went forward as scheduled on Saturday, June 25 and, by all reports, was a great success. For 16 years, Bowen Island Sea Kayaking has organized the race, but it wouldn’t have happened without a lot of help and support from other local businesses and the 100 participants. I would personally like to thank the Bowen Island sponsors, including The Bowen Island Marina, Ruddy Potato and the Bowen Island Pub. Additional sponsors include Deep Cove Canoe and Kayak, Think Kayak, Seaward Kayak and Starboard Paddle Boards. The race cannot be conducted without the watchful eye of safety boats stationed around the island, so the paddlers and Bowen Island Sea Kayaking are indebted to Doug Hooper, David Smith (courtesy of Michael Segal’s boat), Damien Bryan, Chuck Hutcheson and Neil Dawe. It was fantastic to meet paddlers from all over B.C. including Prince George, Kelowna, Vancouver Island and also Washington state to participate in what has been dubbed “the longest single day race on the West Coast.” There was a good showing of local talent too, including Bruce McTaggart, Sam Knowles and Dan Dekkers, Peter Kearney, Michelle Nelson, Chris Mull (the only prone paddle boarder in the race!) and Hilary Cassidy (with her visiting sister). The wind dictated a clockwise orientation and the seas were relatively calm with only one paddle boarder abandoning the race. The Half Island Challenge, at 19 kilometres, was won by a 12-year-old and her dad paddling a double surf ski and crossing the finish line at 1:37:59. Bruce McTaggart and his partner Ian Lowe were the fastest in the whole island at 2:34:02, while the fastest single was three-time champion Wes Hammer at 2:36:26.

The kayak race is renowned for its post-race salmon barbecue and it did not fail to meet expectations. Dan Parkin orchestrated the barbecue to provide much-needed funds for the Bowen Island Museum and Archives. The racers continue to exclaim that this is the best post-race event of any they attend. Bowen Island Gives grateful to supporters Dear Editor: Bowen Island Gives would like to send a BIG thank you to everyone who came out to support Callanish Society on Saturday. The BIG! Hike up Mount Gardner brought together 50 amazing individuals from Bowen as well as from the mainland. And the BIG! afterparty at the Bowen Island Pub saw more than 100 folks dancing the night away to Black Molly. Our community opened their hearts and wallets to raise more than $5,500 for Callanish Society. Callanish is a local grassroots organization that provides support to individuals fighting cancer and their families, as well as offers four week-long retreats a year to enhance quality of life and well-being. The BIG! committee would like to extend our deepest thanks to all of the dedicated volunteers who helped make the BIG! day such a success, including Peter King for his on-demand bus service, Glen and the (Bowen Island) Pub for their fantastic space and donation – and all of the musicians in Black Molly

for bringing so many awesome islanders and visitors out to support Callanish that night. Thanks Bowen Island for your BIG! support! To learn more about Callanish, please visit their website: callanish.org.

Portland inspired new brand

from PAGE 1

Bowen was a person, that person would be getting their wardrobe in the dark … and changing it every day.” Inspiration for Bowen’s new brand came from Portland’s grassroots “Keep Portland Weird” campaign, explained Staples. “If Bowen was a city, I think it might be something like Portland,” he added. “It’s quirky, it’s a little granola, very artistic and has a lot of our shared values.” The branding team started with 200 taglines. Other contenders for Bowen’s new slogan included: Just off the coast of ordinary, Bowen Island, B.C.; Welcome to Bowen Island, now get lost; and Bowen Island, this is my happy place. As for the cheeky catchphrase that prevailed, Staples said there’s a proud defiance about it – meant to reflect Bowen’s “quirky and eccentric” character – but outsiders will still know “of course, it’s not awful here.” “Anyone who lives here has a love-hate relationship with visitors,” said Staples. “We love to show off our island, but we don’t want it to be overrun with tourists. We want visitors, but only if they really get what makes Bowen special.” If nothing else, Staples said he wanted the branding to

“pass the bumper sticker test.” A supporting cast of handdrawn characters – an eagle, a seal and slug – representing other inhabitants of the island will be featured in marketing materials alongside the lead deer mascot. “We all know the deer really own this island and we’re just guests,” said Staples. The mascots will be used on postcards and in online videos and social media. You can see the video prototypes by visiting the BIM channel on YouTube. Bowen’s brand identity includes three distinct “voices,” each aimed at dif-

ferent audiences, including the municipality, visitors and residents. “Don’t worry – you won’t see ‘Tell your friends it’s awful here’ on your next tax assessment. It will only be used where appropriate,” said Mayor Murray Skeels, who called the new branding “fantastic.” Skeels said he loves the idea of having mascots popping up on Bowen’s social media channels and being ambassadors for the community. “That really gives you the humour and the story and

you identify with these characters and you like them,” said Skeels. Coun. Sue Ellen Fast was pleasantly surprised by the presentation, saying she wasn’t expecting to be presented with a vehicle or a medium to do community outreach and conversation starting. Coun. Michael Kaile said the EDC “set the bar really, really high” and left nothing undone with this campaign. “So, if we’re to capitalize on this work, we just need a really great team to move this on, because this cannot remain static,” said Kaile, adding it’s up to the community to nurture this new brand and make

sure it sticks and doesn’t get derailed. Coun. Melanie Mason said she was curious how the EDC was going to incorporate all the voices on the island, including the younger ones. “Having those characters there, I can just see it spilling into the playground and just everybody being able to identify with one of those voices,” said Mason. The unveiling of Bowen’s new brand elicited laughs, especially when the tagline was revealed, and thunderous applause by council-watchers and council members, many of whom were already sporting “Tell your friends it’s awful here” T-shirts as they left town hall.
