Prime Minister Justin Trudeau marks first trip to Bowen Island
TRUDEAU MADE A SURPRISE STOP TO DISCUSS OCEAN PROTECTION
ALEX KURIAL Editor
JUST IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau surprised the majority of the island when he chose Tuesday morning for his first trip to Bowen. But word got out quick, and by the time Trudeau hit the boardwalk people were out to meet and great the prime minister. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made his first ever visit to Bowen Island on Tuesday morning to announce a new investment in the Oceans Protection Plan. “It is so fantastic today to be here on Bowen Island. Growing up I spent a lot of time with my grandparents just across the way in West Van looking out over Howe Sound, and my great grandmother actually lived on the other side near Gibsons, where we’d go and visit,” said Trudeau. “Being here today on Bowen roots me here in the past, but also in the future that we need to build all together.” Returning to the reason for his visit – $2 billion in new funding over the next nine years for the Oceans Protection Plan – Trudeau outlined some of the projects that money will go toward, including many in the waters around Bowen. “The Salish Sea right behind me is one of the most richly biodiverse places on Earth,” said Trudeau from the Causeway overlooking Mannion Bay. “And I don’t have to tell anyone here why it matters that we protect these spaces.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 3

Trudeau notes success of killer whale births and Howe Sound cleanup ANNOUNCEMENT FOLLOWED BY LUNCH AT DOC MORGAN’S
Resident Killer Whale families for the first time in over a decade,” said Trudeau. “You can also see it when you look around Howe Sound. Fifty years ago this was one of the most polluted places in North America, teetering on the brink of ecological disaster. Today, it’s teeming with life once again,” added the prime minister. Asked what successes of the program he’s most proud of, Trudeau noted building relationships with Indigenous peoples in coastal regions, helping to counter the negative effects of marine traffic, the reopening of the Kitsilano Trudeau said he’s very pleased he finally got the chance to set foot on Bowen Island after many years of coming close to the island. “I’ve kayaked all along the whole coast going up the sound, and I’ve always looked forward to coming here,” he said. “I’m really looking forward to meeting as many people as possible and enjoying some of the fabulous and famous Bowen Island hospitality.” The prime minister did just that, going for lunch at Doc Morgan’s following the announcement and meeting with people at the restaurant and gathered on the USSC Marina lawn before and after his meal. Trudeau and his team then departed on a Canadian Coast Guard hovercraft en route to his next stop of the day.

The prime minister said the next phase of the project – dubbed “Oceans Protection Plan 2.0” – will “renew and expand this work across the country, including continuing our work in the Great Lakes and on the St. Lawrence. We’ll take action to combat emerging threats to our marine safety and ecosystems, and we’ll strengthen partnerships with Indigenous peoples. “A good example is the work we’re doing together right here together on the Salish Sea strategy. We’ll continue to protect and restore this rich ecosystem in a way that respects Indigenous and treaty rights and traditional knowledge,” said Trudeau. “And we’ll deploy technologies that reduce the impacts of underwater noise so that marine mammals can safely communicate with each other and navigate through these waters,” he added. The Oceans Protection Plan, launched in 2016, aims to “ensure our oceans are cleaner, healthier and safer for years to come,” according to Transport Canada. The government is planning for 15 new initiatives over the next nine years, to pair with 39 measures already in practice. Trudeau pointed to the region’s history to show that even dire environmental situations can be solved. “We can’t help but feel hopeful when we hear stories like the new baby orca born to one of the Southern

VIEWPOINTS When the PM comes to town
As everyone surely knows by now, July 12 was not your average day on Bowen Island. A lazy Tuesday in July ended up featuring the first ever visit to the island by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. (Whether this was the first visit ever to Bowen by a prime minister - sitting or otherwise remains to be seen. This question will need to be answered with a trip to the archives, or perhaps some of Bowen’s more veteran residents.) It was a visit that few of us knew about until the morning of, which I have to admit included myself. I was so confident in a quiet morning that a visiting friend and I boarded the 8:30 ferry to take care of some business on the mainland. But something in the offload line told me this may not be a normal day. A pair of Vancouver news vans rolled off back to back, a sight I’ve rarely seen during my (admittedly short) time here. So I did what I usually do when I have a question - call my colleague Tracey. Naturally she had just found out what was going on, and told me the leader of the country was on his way to Bowen Island for an 11:15 am presser. So, just as soon as I drove off the ferry in Horseshoe Bay I was taking Exit 4 to loop right back into the lineup. Thankfully my very understanding friend is a fellow reporter, and she is no stranger to plans going up in flames on a moment’s notice. After a stressful half hour ferry delay (of course) I was able to land and rush over to the Causeway to catch the presser (again aided by Tracey who took my car to go park.) And the rest is history. And very good history at that. Bowen proved wonderful hosts for Trudeau’s first visit, and the crowds lining up to meet and grab selfies with the prime minister were friendly and respectful. It was a refreshing sight after seeing the behaviour of many people who have shown up at Trudeau’s stops during the past year. You don’t have to love or support the man (I know several of his critics here on the island were some of the most eager selfie-seekers yesterday) but it is important to show a basic level of civility toward people we don’t always agree with - and certainly guests to Bowen. As Trudeau said, the island has a hospitable reputation, and the many smiling faces and positive energy during his visit yesterday certainly reinforced that. And oh yes, the day was a stark reminder that there are truly no off days in the journalism world. However if everybody could take it easy while the Undercurrent staff are away on vacation next week, we would all greatly appreciate it! See you in August! - Alex Kurial, Editor
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Canada Day on Bowen I appreciated the efforts of the people who organized this year’s Canada Day, and enjoyed Geronimo’s nature/culture walk and trying my hand at bannock on a stick. I hope these and other cultural innovations can be continued. However, I hope next year we can return to Crippen Park for several reasons. The activities and exhibits around the perimeter make them visible and accessible for all. People can also sit on the grass to enjoy the day, music, and the view of the boats and the water, and can explore the exhibits and activities as they see fit. People can also easily wander back and forth to get ice cream
or other snacks, or to visit the merchants in the Cove. That was a lost opportunity for the visitors -- and the merchants -- this year. Also, please bring back the Canada Day birthday cake and the Mounties in their dress red uniforms. They are all part of Canada Day on Bowen. We can celebrate being together as Canadians as well as reflect on the past and resolve to contribute to a better future.

A future Parlimentary photographer Dear Undercurrent, It was a pleasant surprise today, when we drove to the cove to get ice cream at the marina, and also for my 9 year old daughter to do her homework for her Canon Photography Class this week. Today is the second day she is officially a photographer (class started yesterday), and her homework was to take pictures of moving subjects. I thought it was a good idea and a good time to drive to the marina, have some ice cream, and wait for the ferry to arrive so she can take pictures of cars getting off the ferry. Parking was hard to find on Trunk Road. Usually parking is easy to spot by the Snug. This time, there was no parking so I thought to find parking spot on Cardena, in front of Hearth Gallery. There was a commotion at the entrance to the Lagoon - there were lots of people, and there were police! Me and my curious kids want to find out. “Let’s be nosy and find out what’s going on”. We were sure to find out someone hurt themself. My daughter steps out of the car with my first ever DSLR 40D canon which I bought for myself for my 24th birthday in 2008, now passed to her and wears around her neck. We found out the Prime Minister was at the lagoon! Of course I got really excited. Anyone would be! But also, I was thinking - what a timing for my daughter! Who has a camera, just learned to take pictures, and what a great opportunity this will be on her second day of her Canon Photo Camp Class. I told the RCMP. I misunderstood, and I thought Justin was at the DOC having lunch then will go to the lagoon after. So I drag my 9 year old, and 5 year old towards the marina. I told them to wait in the corner of the library
and Trunk Road, in case Trudeau comes out and crosses the street on his way to the lagoon. I came back with two melted ice cream, and a caramel macchiato on my hand. While waiting, I help my daughter set up her camera. I practiced crossing the street so she can practice taking sharp images. Then she told me that I misunderstood, and that Justin is actually at the lagoon and will have lunch at D O C after! So I ran back to the area close to the lagoon where ever yone gathered while I left my daughter still standing in the corner just in case, and clarify where the Prime Minister is. And my daughter was right, Justin is indeed still at the lagoon. I hurried and screamed at my daughter to run and hurry up in case he shows up anytime now and be ready to take pictures. I told her to toss her ice cream as soon as he sees him, and take lots of pictures non-stop. This was her real photographer moment. What we have to do as photographers to get the shot! And funny enough, Justin shows up shortly after, and my daughter tosses the ice cream backwards and it landed on my shirt. She ran, we all ran and met the Prime Minister. It was the most amazing moment. I went up to Justin and asked if my daughter could take some photos as she is a new photographer and doing her assignment, and heels me to be in the picture with him. And my son. My daughter takes a photo with the Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on her first week as a photographer student of Canon. At 9 years old. Any photographer would dream this moment. - Mary Jane Davey & photographer Harper Dowdeswell

High praise for the fire extinguisher I try to live an uneventful and predictable life having had my share of all manner of wonderful experiences and disastrous calamities. Try as I might, excitement finds me. It took the form on Monday evening of a raging BBQ fire that could very nearly have consumed my house and endangered the island, so I write to share this as the importance of having a working fire extinguisher on hand proved critical. I am by no means ignorant of the need for a BBQ to be regularly cleaned. This seemed to be a perfect storm of scenarios that led from happily preparing home made burgers with an obliging adult son to a crisis. Fortunately my addled brain coped fairly well under pressure and between us we went through the necessar y thoughts and steps of “turn off the burners, no water on fat fires, block oxygen to it, must smoother, move the umbrella!, wet towel to open lid, tried to smoother with wet towel, dumped a 10 lb bag of flour, still not out, grab the fire extinguisher ...phew”..... cue adrenaline rush. All in the timespan of less than 2 minutes. The words raging inferno fit what we were dealing with. It was fast and furious and if my extinguisher hadn’t been on hand our next step would have been to call our wonderful volunteer fire department (who are most familiar with the route to my house), and by that time I have no doubt the tank would have been compromised and they would have been dealing with containing a house fire and stopping it spreading. I look at my BBQ now sitting meekly on the deck, showing no signs of the horrific monster it turned into as we waited for it to warm up. I have been bashing that extinguisher with the mop and broom in my kitchen, cursing it as it falls on my toes, disliking it’s ugly presence. It sits next to the recycling bins. But it was here, and we both knew where it was and it was an automatic go to. I took it to DNA Fire Doctors in North Van afterwards, along with the one I keep downstairs where the wood stove is, and the smaller one from my van (‘coz engine fires and me used to be a thing!). Pete noted it was a 1996 model, that’s how long I’ve been keeping it handy! He inspected the other two and is recharging one. They are very reasonable to purchase.
The hero of the evening at Sam Knowles’house recently. My new 4 lb reconditioned one was $30. If you don’t have one I urge you to consider getting one or two. If you do, I urge you to go put your hands on it as soon as you have read this and challenge your family members to know where it is and make sure everyone feels comfortable with it. For the record, sand or huge amounts of baking soda would have been better options than flour. I shall be lugging some sand into a pail to sit next to the BBQ in future and keeping a large box of baking soda on hand. Happy summer and dare I say it... “stay safe!!!” - Sam Knowles Bishop’s Hill

Bowen council reaffirms its business ALEX KURIAL Editor A pair of motions meant to reaffirm council’s position on two contentious topics were passed earlier this month, though not unanimously. Councillors Maureen Nicholson and Sue Ellen Fast raised both motions at the last council meeting July 11. First on the agenda was dealing with the ongoing motorized Mount Gardner saga. The majority of public feedback has shown opposition to the idea, and Fast said it was important to add council’s voice to this list. “We’ve heard from the people on Bowen, we have concerns with wildfire… campfires, and all the planning and the budget that would be required to manage this,” said Fast. “I just think it’s important for the community to know we’ve been listening to
them, and for us to take to UBCM (Union of BC Municipalities) in the fall that we have reaffirmed our resolution.” Bowen council passed similar motions in 2020 and 2021, leading some members including Mayor Gary Ander to question why a third iteration was necessary. “We just want to be clear… that we reaffirm the resolution that we made before,” said Fast. Ander perhaps wasn’t fully convinced, but determined “I don’t really think it’s necessary, but it can’t hurt.” The new resolution that council once again voice their opposition to any motorized vehicle use on Mount Gardner passed 6-1, with Coun. Alison Morse in opposition. “I think we should just be letting the consultation process play out. Isn’t there a chance to find some reasonable grounds of in between to – given all the kilometres of trails up there – to allow at least one, if they require permits and all that sort of stuff, to use it?” said Morse.
Recreation Sites and Trails BC will make the final call on the issue, though a decision isn’t expected until next year. Council then turned their attention to the Woodfibre LNG plant set for construction outside of Squamish. A delegation from the company presented to Bowen council at the end of May. A motion of opposition to the project was previously passed in 2020, again prompting the question why this reaffirmation was necessary. “I think one of the main reasons is that the community has expressed concern about this relatively recently… and have asked us to reaffirm our support for these motions,” said Nicholson. “So it’s intended to provide that assurance… to the community that we still, as a council, support that position.” Coun. Michael Kaile felt the municipality had already made their position clear. “This is a long game with Woodfibre… I feel we’ve stated our case. I’m sorry but a good case should not need restating, and very often it suggests there’s a problem with the case if it has to be repeated,” said Kaile. This vote was slightly closer but still passed comfortably 5-2, with Kaile and Morse in opposition.
Low Hanging Fruit Project seeking partners HASAN HUTCHINSON Contributor Are you interested in building community food resilience and connection? One way is to become involved in the Low Hanging Fruit Project. As you may know, many property owners on Bowen have fruit and nut trees that do not get harvested due to either a lack of time, equipment or sometimes over-abundance. Low Hanging Fruit brings volunteers together to pick the fruit (using an orchard ladder and picking basket) so that trees that would otherwise go unpicked can be enjoyed and used on the island. The fruit is distributed equally between volunteers, property owners (donors) and the community. Community use may be

Mt. Gardner Connector Trail Opening Celebration CARLA SKUCE Parks and Environment Coordinator / BIM Representatives from Bowen Island Municipality, Metro Vancouver and Recreation Sites and Trails B.C. recently got together to celebrate the opening of a new trail. The trail was a collaborative effort between the three levels of government : the Municipality coordinated construction of the trail and Metro Vancouver and the Province provided the land. Aptly named the Mt. Gardner Connector, the trail connects the existing trail networks in Crippen Regional Park and Mt. Gardner, starting in the meadow across from Killarney Lake and intersecting with Skid Trail close to Hiker’s Trail Road.
Previously, hikers would end up walking along Mt. Gardner Road and up Hiker’s Trail Road, creating a potentially dangerous situation when drivers and hikers met on the narrow streets. Now, hikers have access to over 30 km of trails in two of Bowen Island’s most visited recreation sites without ever having to leave the forest. The trail also helps to alleviate parking and ferry congestion by giving tourists another reason to leave their cars at home. The trail is just over 1 km long but goes a long way towards improving user experiences for residents and tourists alike. The easy grade through lush, coastal western hemlock forest is inviting to any trail user and makes exploring Mt. Gardner a little more accessible; not just reserved for those who can make it to the top!
COMING SOON A selection of lots from the $800Ks to $900Ks + GST Perched above Seymour Bay and the neighbourhood of Seymour Shores, these homes will enjoy stunning sunrises and the serene view of the Strait of Georgia, Vancouver and Mt. Baker.

paddock and the second will be at the picnic tables by Killarney Lake. There will be music, prayer, silence and a further emphasis on our winged friends. We will meet at 10 am at the church and make sure everyone gets to the outdoor location for 10:30 and that no folks are left behind. And, for the next two Sundays in August, we will take a break. There will be no Sunday morning services at Bowen Island United Church on either August 21 nor 28. Evensong services will also stop for the month of August but in September we will resume our cycle of holding them on the first and third Sunday of the month at 7 pm. We will return in full force on Sunday, September 4 with plans to celebrate our 90th birthday at some point in the fall. Please stay tuned for more details about this milestone event. Thank you for your attention to all of this information. I just want you all to know where we are and what we are up to as the summer spins by. At the risk of being redundant, all are welcome, all of the time. In love and hope,

Is it really past the middle of July?? I do wonder how this can be. Before too much more time goes by, I want to give you all an update on the happenings at Bowen Island United Church for the remainder of the summer. I am in the midst of a sermon series called, The Winged Creatures Among Us, and I am reflecting on the birds we share the planet with. So far, I have spoken about the Sparrow and the Eagle. And this Sunday, July 24, it will be the Vulture - Beauty and the Beast. On July 31 I’ll be away marrying a young couple on Savory Island and Lynn Williams, our wonderful minister of music, will hold a good ole fashioned hymn sing! As always, all are welcome. We invite the Community - especially those with young children - to stop by the church on Wednesday, August 3 for an “ice cream social” between 1 and 3 pm. We will have ice cream and music, the kids can play in the churchyard or on the playground and the adults can have a visit. Then, for the next two Sundays, August 7 and 14, we are taking our show on the road! Bowen Island United Church will hold two outdoor services. The first will be in the small meadow behind the larger meadow and behind the horse
These fully-serviced view lots are planned to be released for presale late summer. House and lot packages available.

Bowen Island welcomes Trudeau
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he was looking forward to experiencing the famed Bowen Island hospitality when he visited July 19, and residents certainly delivered on the reputation. Trudeau chatted with people and posed for photos before, during and after lunch at Doc Morgan’s. When it was finally time to go, a waiting Coast Guard hovercraft was the prime minister’s vehicle of choice.

We’ll miss you Jewal It was with shock and sadness to learn of the sudden passing of Jewal Maxwell over the weekend. Jewal was known by many on the island, as a Light Up Bowen organizer, flagger, and so much more. Even in my brief time on Bowen I had several conversations with her, each of which I came away from having enjoyed and learned something new. From the entire Undercurrent team, our deepest condolences go out to Jewal’s family and friends. - Alex

Tunstall Bay gets jazzy
love summer
The Tunstall Three - made up of Boweners Julian Selody on alto sax, Cindy Fairbank on the fender rhodes electric piano, and Buff Allen on drums - entertained the crowd with an evening concert July 14. Charles McNeill was in attendance and took some photos, later recalling that he wasn’t sure if he was in Tunstall Bay or Greenwich Village by the end of the night.

July 16, 2022 was an extraordinary SwimBowen day with calm seas, rainfree skies and swimmers, volunteers and supporters brimming with enough enthusiasm to keep us all afloat for another year. When we began SwimBowen in the wintery darkness of 2018, our hope was to cajole 20 swimmers to sign up and raise enough money so we could scrape by and perhaps launch the event the following year. And maybe even raise some funds for our Bowen Island Cancer Care initiative. It seems the universe was primed to welcome SwimBowen with open arms as the response to our events is astounding. This year’s results are show-stopping with sold out registration, a registration waiting list, and record breaking fundraising currently $44,500 (and counting). Jaw dropping stuff. A heart-felt congratulations to our top fundraiser, Michael Henrichsen, winner of the Whistler Get Away Grand Prize package for two (3 nights accommodation, lift tickets, Scandinave Spa and dinner out) who raised an epic $13,000 for Bowen Island’s Cancer Care Fund. During the five weeks leading up to the event, and with his partner Jennifer on a paddleboard at his side, Michael swam
the entire distance around Bowen Island in sections. On event morning, he completed the last leg of his circumnavigation - starting at Cape Roger Curtis and arriving in Tunstall Bay in time to join the other registrants for the 1500 metre event. The crowd cheered him in, his family greeted him at the water’s edge and there was much hugging. And happy tears. A big congratulations to our runner up fundraisers: Sandy Parkinson ($6,500 raised), Susan Alexander ($4,500 raised), Anne Chollat ($4,100 raised) and Jlonka Bally-Brown ($2,800 raised). Remarkable! Congratulations to the top finishers in the 1500 metre event: first place Owen Owens, Vancouver: 22:07, Kisley Barbic, Squamish: 23:16, 2nd place; Drew Powell, North Vancouver: 23:06, and Uma Sukkau, Vancouver: 25:25, 3rd place; Brian Smallwood, California:26:35, and Roberta Doinella, Vancouver: 26:38. The top female finishers in the 750 metre event are: Leah Cline, Bowen Island: 15:10; Gemma McCutcheon, Vancouver: 20:51; and Di Izdebski, Bowen Island: 23:01. The top male finishers for the 750 metre event are: Dan Nixon, Vancouver: 13:42; Pedro Feitosa De Lucena, Vancouver: 15:23. To our 2022 corporate and community sponsors, to our legion of volunteers, our donors and of course to our fabulous
Volunteer pickers and tree donors needed to help increase harvest and sharing of local fruit! Many fruit and nut trees on Bowen do not get harvested due to either a lack of time, equipment or sometimes over-abundance. Low Hanging Fruit brings volunteers together to pick the fruit so that trees that would otherwise go unpicked can be enjoyed and used on the island. Low Hanging Fruit reduces fruit waste, improves local food resilience, and builds community around the picking and sharing of those fruits. If interested please contact Hasan Hutchinson at: lhfruit22@gmail.com Low Hanging Fruit is a Bowen Island Food Resilience Society (BIFS) project supported by Bowen Island Community Foundation and Regenerative Bowen Island. swimmers - please know that together you are part of this beautiful thing called SwimBowen, a little event doing great, big things. We couldn’t do it without you. And that’s the Bowen community event I know and love - the kind that brings us together, bringing out the best in all of us. Years down the road we won’t remember the details of the event, the weather or how fast or slow we swam. We will however remember how SwimBowen made us feel, and how a little community can pull together and change their corner of the world for the better. Thank you Bowen Island and beyond!

First decline in MLS® Average Sale Price in over a year MOVING TO MORE BALANCED MARKET
The YoY MLS® Home Price Index or benchmark price continued to move upward, ending June 2022 at record high of $1,497,900, up 1.56 per cent over May 2022, and up 27.1 per cent over the past year. Year-over-year, detached properties sold for an average of 98.5 per cent of list; however, the gap between List Price and Sold Price month-over-month has trended down over the past year. The Average Sold Price in June 2021 was 101 per cent of list. The Bank of Canada raised its rate 1.0 per cent on July 13th, putting it 2.25% above its rate in July 2021. “The Canadian economy is now clearly in excess demand, and
TIM RHODES Contributor
June 2022 saw the YoY Average Sale Price* down slightly at $1,749,019 or -0.43 per cent from the YoY record high in May 2022, notable because it is the first decline in a year. The YoY Average Sale Price increased 24.2 per cent over the last 12 months. The YoY Median Sale Price* was also down in June, ending at $1,559,000 or -0.35 per cent form the record high in May 2022. This was only the second decrease in Median Sale Price in the last year. The YoY Median Sale price increased 20.4 per cent over the past year.

inflation is high and broadening. The Bank is projecting inflation to decline to about 3% by the end of 2023, and to return to the 2% target by the end of 2024.” (bankofcanada. ca/2022/07/mpr-2022-07-13/) The rate will be addressed again in September, October, and December, depending on the success of the current rate to curb inflation and avoid recession or the longer term pain of stagflation or recessioninflation, “a situation in which the inflation rate is high, the economic growth rate slows, and unemployment remains steadily high. It presents a dilemma for economic policy, since actions intended to lower inflation may exacerbate unemployment.” (en. wikipedia.org/wiki/Stagflation) At this writing, MLS® shows 33 detached home properties listed on Bowen Island. Twenty-five per cent of these listings have seen price reductions from the original list price. The median price was $100,000, indicative of a slower market more balanced
market. Islanders can expect to see more price adjustments to current listings and to see less aggressive pricing on new listings. Bowen is shifting to a more balanced market where buyers will have more latitude to negotiate; however, as interest rates will reduce their buying power will be reduced. We have seen the end of 2% increases in the benchmark price every month and price reductions on current listings are likely; however, we could still see a 1.0 – 2.0 per cent YoY increase in the benchmark price for Bowen Island over the year. *Average and Median Sale numbers used in this article have been adjusted to account for a $13,600,000 sale in May of 2021which is being treated as an outlier to give a more accurate picture of market shifts. A Look Back - with the Bowen Archives: July DAVID COLLINGS Archival Summer Student / Bowen Island Museum & Archives
The following are unedited excerpts from the Undercurrent in decades past. Anything sound familiar? To read past Undercurrent issues or follow up on information, please contact us at bihistorians@telus.net or 604-947-2655. 40 Years Ago - July 1982 80’s Bowen brings the swing: One of the perils of the Evening of Jazz and Big Band Dance is the getting together of the fine bunch of musicians that we have coming to Bowen Island for the night of July 17th at the Legion ( Jazz Cellar) would be an endless task as the demand with the great upswing and returning of this music to the scene probably is the only art form North America has to offer the rest of the world in these tough economic times. From the reception given the Band of those on Bowen who attended last year’s undoubtedly helps us. Gerry Wennes leader and musical director and the guys in the band felt it was a fun gig and the event for our own senior citizens housing will be kept in the same tone this year. Gerry’s thoughts were to have some of Bowen’s finest horn men - Kim Elton on trumpet and fluglehorn, Rob Arseneau on trumpet and Jazz Harp - to sit in with some of the best in Jack Fulton, Trombone, Peter Trill Bass, Rick Macdonald, Drum, Nick Kararseha guitar, Lim Birrill Piano, and Gerry on Sax and Clarinet for the Jam Session. Then later they will sit in with the addition of Cliff Binnion, Alto Sax, Paul Perrier, Tenor Sax, Dave Foley and Carle Sneddon, Trumpet and Al (name itplay it) Reusch with the great arrangements for the Big Dance Band and then finish the evening with a wild, wild ending.
Using the legion has been a big help, but the number of tickets is very limited so call early as Vina will like to know how many for dinner.
30 Years Ago - July 1992 This week at Doc Morgan’s Inn: Friday, July 24: Bowen’s own “You’ve Been Robbed” (Rob Thompson and the Robs) Tagline: “All your favourite tunes!” Saturday, July 25: celtic bluegrass Moritz & the Fiddleheads Tagline: Fiddle, banjo & bass Sunday, July 26: afternoon jazz Triple Time Tagline: Outside on our deck! Doc’s now serves breakfast Saturday & Sunday mornings 7:30 to 11:00 AM! 20 Years Ago - July 2002 Great Blue Heron colony lost to eagle predators: The Bald Eagle and the Great Blue Heron: two magnificent bird species whose survival has been threatened over the last century. Both species live and breed on Bowen Island. This year, islanders have been witness to spectacular, and horrifying, dramas between the eagle as predator, and the heron, its prey. Last year, the heron colony on Bowen Island was large and prolific. Some of those heron chicks were killed by the eagles, some of them survived. This year, the heron colony was down to a mere three nests in Snug Point. And none of the heron chicks survived.
10 Years Ago - July 2012 Maritime headlines: The bounty of the ocean around Bowen: YouTube video showcases this year’s nature dive Abandoned and derelict: several different approaches may be needed to deal with the boats (and outflow) in Deep Bay
The talkers, the doers, and the dreamers: Maria Steernberg and Mercia Sixta are looking back on a hectic few weeks as they were very involved in the nine-day-long Steamship Days celebration. They were very, very busy but not too busy to have loads of fun in the process. Sixta could be seen with a clipboard and printed pages as she was responsible for organizing the musical events and scheduling volunteers. Steernberg coordinated the wooden boat show, helped out with computer input and general issues and was on duty with her camera, capturing the fun for Sea Snaps Photography. …Steernberg believes that the event went a long way toward bringing the community together. “It was lots of fun and the first weekend was very busy. I got the feeling that this was when the community suddenly realized the potential,” she said. “I walked [my dog] Marina in the park when SKY had the picnic in Crippen Park and one of the ladies said that she had the most fun at Steamship Days she’d had for 55 years.”
…Last year’s heron colony on Bowen Island, the only one is Howe Sound, was, comparatively, a small colony. “We know that there are some big colonies that are master colonies. These are satellites,” said biologist [Sue Ellen] Fast. Charade problems: An overly eager game of charades got a bit noisy and the players were asked to move inside as they were keeping the neighbours up.
