“You have to payalot moreattention to the dynamics of howa council is working, and the dynamicsofhow acommunity is working. So notions of well-beingand collaboration and clarity, and most importantly communication, aresuper importantinthe mayoralrole,” she says MaureenNicholson andAndrew Leonardwerethe first to announcetheircandidaciesformayorAug.30.

“I thinkthiscomingtermisgoingtobereally inter estinginterms of organizational relationships with the IslandsTrust andwithMetroVancouver,” she says, pointingtoseveral reviewsthe organization hasrequested includingalook at the Islands TrustAct,policystatement, andpotential new governancecommittee

Candidate puzzle fills in its first pieces

Nicholson says hercampaignwill focus on three major areas, the firstbeingaddressingBowen’smanyin-progress capitalprojects. “Weneed to complete the capital projects that we have underway. And we need to do that in afiscally responsible and transparentway,” she says. “Finish what we’vestarted, fulfill the promisethatwas putforward over acouple of councils for thosecapital projects. Some of them arecomingtoa close (firehall)… and the other projects need to gettoa happyclosure,” adds Nicholson. Thecouncillor says another priority is to update Bowen’sOfficial Community Plan, which waslastconstructedmorethanadecadeago.“There’sbeen alot of turnoverofpeople in the communityinthat time, so Ithink we need to talk with eachother aboutwhat we want the island to be andcomeupwitha plan that reflects who the island is now, and wherewewanttogo,” says Nicholson. In addition, Nicholsonwants to pursue alternativesourc es of revenuetopropertytaxes to takefinancial pressure off owners. She mentions the Municipal and Regional District

“I’ve had so many inspiring, enlightening, and gener ousconversationsabout ourisland and community so far.I’m really lookingforward to allthosethat arecoming, and usingthis campaign as adriverfor engagement. Theenthusiasm is there,”wrote Leonardonline (Note* We were unable to crosspaths with Leonard for an interview by presstime. We’ll be doing an interview with himlater this week.)

Tax, Tourism Tax, and inclusion within the Islands Coastal Economic Trustaspotential new sources Nicholson is also puttingher name forward forone of the twotrustee positions with Islands Trust. She’ll have to be successful in her bid for mayortohavea shot at the role, astrusteesmust also be electedtoa municipal position.

“I think Iwould be both interested andable to contributetothat discussion. Theother piece is the parkatCapeRoger Curtis is goingtorequirea lot of attention and knowledgeofhow the park system works, which Ithink Ihaveafter servingonthe Parks Committeefor eightyears,” adds Nicholsononwhat will surely be one of Bowen’smosttalked aboutissues in the upcomingyear “Comingout rightatthe beginningofthe nomination period,Ithink that there’sa degree of clarity and leadership required of amayor,” says Nicholson on her decision to declareearly. Butshe acknowledges,“Ithink I mayhavetobemoreproactiveinengagingwith specific groups,” in reference to her council campaign strategy of puttingthe focus on showing up to events she was invitedto.

“Sometimes people think the mayorhas alot moresay than councillors. But the mayorhas onevote, like all the other councillors.”

TreatingBowen cars/passengers thesame as the other traffic is absurd

LETTERS TOTHE

Thelineup of all ferry traffic today, (Wednesdayafternoon,August24), backeduponthe highwaypastthe Caulfeild exit causinganextremely dangerous situation, as well as frayed tempers Ahighpercentage of the cars in this lineup which were headingtoBowen could easilyhavebeendivertedtothe Village cut-off and then shuffledoff to ourusual journeydownthe shoulder and making ournormaltrip. Butno, we were required to wait in the highwaylineup, trips delayed, kids boilinginthe sun, cars runningout of gas, groceries overheating, and cursingheardall over the lowermainland. Ignoringthe fact that severalofthe Bowenferries sailedhalf full. Absurdities likethis areeasily cured Pleaseemail (now) to ……….……….. at BC Ferries and ask for common sensetobe implemented, savingmoneyand tempers andeasingthe increasing stresses we find ourselves in today.

What aparty! Many thankstothe volunteers who put on aterrific Bowfest. Theshortand sweetparade, the “Olympicstyle” tricycle races and stilt walking, the tugof war, a can of Riley’s Sip and Tell Cider, Meadowbrook BBQchicken on ahot dog bun, and dancingwithfriends to the fabulous BlackMolly helped me shakeoff twoyears of Covid chagrin. Dear fellowBowen’ers, We all grumble,I’m sure, aboutthe occasionalscrew-ups with the ferry not meetingits scheduledsailingtimes. In reality, we areincredibly fortunateto have as many sailings as we do,and at what is clearly asubsidised price Howeverthat is no excusetoignore the realities of life and apply some common sensefixes, easily implemented, to an otherwise complicated system of schedulingand loading.

Lloyd Harding March 22, 1941 -August 23, 2022

In 1934 Douglas and Maud Harding along with their five children arrived on Bowen Island as part of aVeteran land grant program. Douglas Harding was employed to the road crew. Apiece of land was purchased in the valley. In 1941 Lloyd Harding was brought home to Bowen Island. This land continued to be part of Lloyd’s life, where he raised his own children, until his last day when he peacefully slipped away from this world at home surrounded by his family. Gone on aTuesday, “firehall night”. He was quietly escorted off the island by aline of fire trucks with lights flashing. All of these trucks he had driven onto the island. A fitting and respectful tribute to aman who gave the majority of his life to the Bowen Island Volunteer Fire Department and its community.

BowenIslandCommunity Choir

From walking trails to dirt roads to paved roads Lloyd lived afull life through many decades of change on Bowen Island. When he was 19 he signed onto the volunteer Fire Department and continued that commitment until his health stopped him from attending Tuesday night fire practices in 2019. He gave nearly 60 years of service to our community. Lloyd worked as asmall engine mechanic for 25 years in North Vancouver at Dillingham/Vanpile. He took early retirement and opened up Harding Repairs from his garage. He was blessed to have four children, eight grandchildren, three great grandchildren and a50year marriage to Dale. You often heard Lloyd before you saw him, apositive man with afeisty spirit. Aperson who was willing to stop everything to help another. Always fixing something from apile of parts sprayed throughout the property. If you needed something Lloyd probably had it hiding somewhere with astory to go with it. He will be greatly missed for his wealth of mechanical knowledge, larger than life personality and his generous nature. For those of you who knew Lloyd we ask you to take amoment the next time you fire up an engine to remember aman who loved this community till his last day.

Thefamily would like to thank all of the home care staff,DrSchloegl and friends who were involved with care and support over the last few years.
