Dave Hamilton named Delta’s Citizen of the Year Chamber award presented posthumously to former Optimist general manager IAN JACQUES

Delta’s highest community honour was presented to one of its beloved community champions and business leaders last Friday night (Nov. 19) at the 70th Annual Hats Off to Excellence Awards. Former Optimist general manager Dave Hamilton was named the 2021 Citizen of the Year posthumously by the Delta Chamber of Commerce. Hamilton lost his courageous battle with cancer in April. Hamilton was a prominent member of the Delta community. Many knew him through his role at the Optimist, while others through his work with the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen, at the Beach Grove Golf Club, on the slo-pitch fields of Ladner or the curling rink. He was a community champion for so many organizations and through his decades of

work at the Optimist, as well as his dedicated work with the Chamber of Commerce, was a champion for the business community. “Dave could solve problems by putting the right people in the room together,” said the Chamber. “It was amazing how connected Dave was in our community and how he used his connections at the City, Chamber, Rotary, Optimist and the many charities he supported to make Delta a better place. “We lost Dave way too early in 2021, but tonight we celebrate Dave Hamilton as the 2021 Citizen of the Year. We thank Dave for all he did for our community of Delta. We all know that Dave is dancing in heaven – and can Dave dance.” Ryan Thomas, Operations Manager at GCT Global Container Terminals, presented the award. “Many in this room knew Dave. He spent over 30 years as general

Hall spoke of Hamilton’s work with Rotary and the business community and how he was always “the eternal optimist,” even after his cancer diagnosis. “Dave lived every day of his life to the end and smiled with his whole face and with his incredible blue eyes,” Hall said. “He loved to dance and he always had music in his heart. When he found out he had cancer he never dwelled on it. He carried on. He never let it define who he was. He continued to work and volunteer for all the organizations that he loved, just adding cancer to his fight list. “Dave was the Delta Optimist – literally the optimist of Delta. Dave was a source of inspiration to all in Rotary and someone that Delta should be very proud of and clearly they are. His impact to business and community was clear in the hundreds of messages received when he passed. He was a gift to everyone in Delta. I thank you so much for this award.”

Preliminary approval moves new plan for Ladner Village closer to reality SANDOR GYARMATI

City council on Monday gave preliminary approval to sweeping Official Community Plan changes for Ladner Village. Aimed at encouraging redevelopment of the village and waterfront, the amendments are headed to a public hearing. The changes to the Ladner Area Plan involve new design guidelines for a Village-wide development permit area, allowing more density and taller buildings up to six storeys in certain areas. Council also approved a motion by Mayor George Harvie for staff to look into retaining Spot on the Water Park. During his virtual town hall meeting the following day, Harvie noted the green space is a much-valued asset but needs improvements as it’s become “an embarrassment.” The revitalization vision has been over two years in the making with the Ladner Village Renewal Advisory Committee (LVRAC) exploring various ideas from elsewhere, obstacles to redevelopment and what’s needed to encourage it.

The new OCP for Ladner Village is to encourage activity through uses that animate the street, increase density with diverse housing types and a sensitive transition between building types. Following the release of the committee’s final report which contained a lengthy list of recommendations, the city retained consultants to come up with more defined proposed changes to the OCP, creating new plans for the village as well as Ladner Harbour, including the vacant cityowned Seven Seas site on Chisholm Street. A planning staff report to council notes that the proposed approach also flows from longer-standing interest in Ladner Village revitalization, including previous efforts to assemble land along the waterfront, previous area plan amendments intended to facilitate redevelopment, as well

as the work on the 2015 South Delta Business Sustainability Strategy. The sustainability strategy emphasized the need for additional residential development in town centres. “Allowing more density in the Village will help to make redevelopment more attractive. Economic analysis indicated that for most sites in the Village, the existing height limitations were too restricting to see change. The analysis also indicated that up to six storeys was necessary to spur redevelopment,” the report to council explains. Throughout the consultative process, there was general support for the various elements present-

ed, with the input used to further refine and inform preliminary concepts around land use, building height, and design guidelines, the report notes. Commercial uses are to be concentrated along Delta Street, Bridge Street and 48 Avenue east of Delta Street, with commercial frontages also possible along Trenant Street, Elliott Street, and Chisholm Street. The area along much of the north side of Chisholm Street remains unchanged, with the exception of allowing up to four storeys of height at the northwest corner of the intersection of Chisholm and Elliott streets, beside the Elliott Street Wharf.

The properties at the western edge of Chisholm, including the Seven Seas site, are designated for a mix of uses that would primarily serve as public open space and access to the waterfront. Existing land uses on east side of Elliott Street along the Chillukthan Slough are not proposed to change. The report also notes an analysis found, among other things, a need to consider parking rate reductions to ensure viability of redevelopment. Counillors Dylan Kruger and Bruce McDonald, both members of the LVRAC, described the OCP changes as striking a reasonable balance between the needs of businesses and local residents. Both also noted the intent was to have a plan that will encourage redevelopment, rather than previous plans which resulted in no action. McDonald also said the plan is not to make Ladner Village another Steveston or White Rock but to help the Delta area become the best possible version of itself. The public hearing takes place Tuesday, Dec. 14 starting at 6 p.m.

involvement throughout the whole process for the last 10 years or so ... To me, it wasn’t an award for me, it was an award for everybody else and my community. This is the first time that it’s ever happened in Tsawwassen First Nation,” says Stark. And it won’t be the last time either, he assures.

TSI started out as Stark Transportation in 2011 and initially offered marine services for environmental and fisheries research, but has since evolved to offer shuttle, marine, sweeping and watering services. He credits the business’ success to everyone who has supported him and TSI over the years, and gives special thanks to TFN Chief Ken Baird. “At the age of 15-yearsold, I was introduced to hard drugs and I lived on the streets from 16 to 26-years-old, on and off, and I came back to Tsawwassen First Nation to get sober within my community ... I had a lot of support within Tsawwassen First Nation. Chief Ken Baird allowed me to live with him in early sobriety for about five years,” said Stark in the award recognition video on the B.C. Achievement Foundation’s website.

“I think that was the foundation of me being able to get enough clean time and sober time underneath me to positively change my life and keep working at what I’m doing.” To other folks who may be on the entrepreneurial path, Stark encourages them to be persistent and to ask for the opportunity and space to showcase what you can do. The B.C. Achievement Foundation celebrates the spirit of excellence and honours the best of the province through its award programs, which “pay tribute to exceptional people doing exceptional work,” reads their website. The foundation has five different award programs, including the Community awards, the Indigenous Business Awards, the Fulmer First Nations Art awards, the Carter Wosk Applied Art + Design Awards and the British Columbia Reconciliation Awards.

Living dike coming to Delta

A living dike will be established in Delta. In the planning process for a couple of years, Delta’s Living Dike Pilot Project, also known as the Boundary Bay Foreshore Enhancement Project, will be an alternate form of foreshore flood protection. It’s to develop and test a method of supplying sediment and vegetation on the foreshore to help existing salt marsh habitats increase in elevation and keep up with sea level rise, known as a living dike. A report to Delta council explains the salt marsh can absorb wave energy reducing the overall wave height that will assist in reducing the dike design elevation and possibly lengthen the timelines for dike raising activities. The pilot project involves designing and constructing a 250-linearmetre section of raised salt marsh in the foreshore along Boundary Bay near 96 Street. The report also notes the pilot project is intended through experimental design to develop and inform future designs of larger living dike projects in Boundary Bay. A coalition led by the City of Surrey with West Coast Environmental Law, Semiahmoo First Nation and the City of Delta received $76 million in funding from Infrastructure Canada’s Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund for 13 projects, one of which is Delta’s Living Dike Pilot Project. The project received $750,000. Delta is using a previously obtained grant to contribute an equal amount toward the project. The pilot project is in the late stages of design and applications for the necessary regulatory permits are being prepared.

Delta’s engineering crews have found no serious issues with the city’s extensive dike system. That’s according to director Steven Lan, who told the Optimist an inspection was undertaken due to the high Fraser River water levels from the heavy rainfall. Since 2000, Delta with provincial and federal funding, has spent more than $12 million on dike works, drainage pump stations and flood box repairs. Delta’s Flood Management Strategy identifies a number of locations for possible dike upgrading over the next decade. The city is currently focusing on five proposed upgrade projects: The East Delta dike, Beach Grove/Boundary Bay,

Westham Island, River Road West and River Road/Lower Cougar Creek. With climate change, sea level rise is a significant threat for the lowlands of Delta, especially along Boundary Bay, according to a Delta staff report, adding the existing coastal dikes are at an elevation of 3.5 metres and currently do not adhere to the province’s seismic guidelines. It’s estimated a major dike breach in Ladner alone could cause $1-to$3 billion in damage. A previous report to council noted the goal by 2050 is to raise Delta’s dikes in a phased project that will take years to complete. That report states preliminary cost estimates for the first phase indicate that dike upgrades to 2050 could cost more than $350 million.

Seismic upgrading could cost an additional $300 million. Dike statutory rightsof-way that parallel the existing dike will also need to be acquired with acquisition costs estimated to be around $10 million. The city continues to apply for various grants, where available, for dike upgrades, flood risk assessments, flood and mitigation planning. Delta farmers have been participating in the BC Agriculture & Food Climate Action Initiative, helping develop the Delta Regional Adaptation Strategies document to identify and prioritize climate change-related risks to agriculture. The Fraser Basin Council, meanwhile, has lobbying for senior government funding for dike upgrades for the region’s vulnerable areas.

The city is looking to create a new parking lot to alleviate parking concerns at the entrance to the Brunswick Point trail system. Staff outlined what’s being considered at a recent meeting of the Agricultural Advisory Committee (AAC), noting staff have met with residents along River Road West and adjoining areas regarding a proposed lot on River Road. The new parking lot, if approved by council, would help alleviate traffic congestion and interference with farm vehicles in the area. Having enough room to accommodate 30-to-40 cars, the paved or gravel lot would be located at approximately 30B Street. The committee was told the next steps include approval from

the Inspector of Dikes. Funding is available this year for the project and if all approvals are not in hand this year, funding will carry over to 2022. However, in discussions with the AAC, residents did raise concerns about attracting even more visitors to the area. The focus will be making sure there is minimal impact to working farm equipment and staff will continue to monitor traffic congestion, the committee was also told. Among the comments from committee members was that washroom facilities and garbage receptacles might also be needed. Due to safety concerns, the city earlier this year installed no parking signs on the road near the popular trail, but only where parking was never allowed in the first place.

Committee members noted that helped curb parallel-parked cars blocking driveways and access to farmlands. A staff report this year noted the dike trail has been a popular destination for recreational users over the years, with a notable increase this past year as a result of the pandemic. The report noted staff have reviewed the possibility of relocating to the south end of 34th Street, but it wasn’t seen as a viable option due to a number of reasons, including its narrow width and large ditches, no ability for vehicles to turn around and the shared road ownership with the Tsawwassen First Nation. Staff then proposed constructing a new parking area at River Road West at 30B Street and limiting existing on-street parking.

What a great night for business in Delta! Last Friday, the Delta Chamber of Commerce held its annual Hats Off Awards gala, with a return to the Tsawwassen Springs ballroom. And although it was a smaller event than usual, due to COVID-19 health and safety protocols, it was sure nice to see some familiar faces and meet some new ones. The business community has taken it on the chin the past 20 months as they have had to pivot in so many directions in order to stay afloat. To have many of our businesses come together once again to celebrate their efforts was fantastic. My hats off to all our winners, nominees and most importantly, the Chamber of Commerce for their efforts in hosting such a successful event. The night was especially poignant, for all of us here at the Delta Optimist. As many of you no doubt know, we lost our former general manager Dave Hamilton in April after a courageous battle with cancer. The Chamber honoured Dave as this year’s Citizen of the Year. I can’t think of anyone more deserving as Citizen of the Year than Dave. He was a tireless advocate for business and for the community. In his decades with the Optimist, he always made sure there was a place in our pages for community organizations to get their messages out to the community. His work with Rotary, the Chamber as well as the Beach Grove Golf Club and other organizations was outstanding. If one was to look up in the dictionary the definition of “community” I’m pretty sure Dave’s picture would appear with that definition. Dave was one of a kind and we miss him all dearly here at the Optimist. Congratulations Dave on this amazing and long deserved honour. We know you are looking down and smiling at all of us.

Giving back this Christmas season, when you can’t volunteer

t’s a bit frustrating this time of year with COVID still hanging over our heads, although it is getting better. The border is opening (a bit), people can once again see loved ones they haven’t been able to see for so long. The vaccinated among us have a fair amount of freedom, but we still have to be very careful. So-called ‘breakthrough’ cases aren’t as rare as we thought (just ask the Ottawa Senators), but nowhere near as severe compared to the unvaccinated. Hopefully, 2022 will be the year we say ‘Goodbye’ to Covid, the visitor that wouldn’t leave. In the meantime, we still have the Holidays coming up. Normally a tough time for some that struggle, but these days it’s even worse, and the opportunities to help those folks are harder to find. Charities have had a tough time during COVID, with more people needing help and fewer people supporting them. Often, people tell me they are skeptical of charities, of where the money goes. National headlines about alleged improper donation use don’t help either. And with so many charities con-

stantly asking for help, it’s hard to decide sometimes. There are so many worthy charities in Delta, hard-working people that convert your donation into real help for someone who needs it. I sat on two charity Boards this past year, and saw first-hand how donations turned into the delivery of services and support for the community. For over 35 years, The Delta Community Foundation has raised funds to distribute to other local charities. Fundraising is hard work, the DCF lets charities work on delivering services instead. The Board does the job of making sure your money goes to worthy recipients. That makes it easy for you – they do the research,

you get the tax receipt, and a good feeling knowing you’ve helped the community. And there’s Deltassist, who has been instrumental in helping those in need throughout the pandemic. When a food bank needed to be set up, Deltassist was there. When seniors needed groceries, Deltassist was there. And now, with Christmas on the horizon, the annual Toy Depot and Christmas Hamper Program are underway, so everyone can hopefully have a little ‘normal’ at this time of year. There are many other worthy charities in Delta, not to mention helping our neighbours in Abbotsford and other flooddamaged areas of the province. Donating is as easy as going to a website or writing a cheque, but the good it will do extends a long way past your generosity. If you had a good year, please remember many others have not. Don’t paint all with same brush Editor: With regards to you report on in the Nov. 11 Optimist “aggressive Photographers disturbing Delta wildlife.” I am a photographer and a 40-year resident of Ladner. I have taken pictures and walked the dikes throughout those years. During COVID and the lockdown of many facilities including Reifel Bird Sanctuary there has been a huge increase in people enjoying the dikes inclusive of dog walkers, hunters and photographers. This has led to congested parking and an increase in popularity as people have been exposed to the natural beauty that is at our doorstep. I have also been taking

pictures on 72nd as well, including the surrounding dike. The complaints are coming from local people who are unable to find their favorite parking spot, as well as having racist overtones as there is a high percentage of photographers that are not of European lineage. The ladders that were mentioned are maximum 5’step ladders, used to give some people a better vantage point to take their pictures. If ladders had been used to cross over the ditch you would see the grass trampled down. It’s not! Do your research before reporting. With regards to being aggressive and disturbing the wildlife, the Barn

Owls in question regularly catch their meals without any disturbance from the photographers, who are quiet, respectful and a minimum of 20 yards away. That’s why photographers have telescopic lenses. Brunswick Point is another issue, which has been hit hard with a lot of traffic by all of the above which has lessened to some degree as venues start to re-open. In future please start taking a look at all the issues instead of painting everyone with the same brush. I believe the Sandor Gyarmati the Optimist and the City owes everyone an apology that has been negatively affected by this article. Robert McLean

$4 billion could buy us a lot of LRT Editor: In regards to the tunnel option for the Massey tunnel replacement and a recent letter from Preston Baggot, quote: “........... without an option for LRT it will be obsolete...............” And somehow a bridge will be different? TransLink does not operate LRT, nor plans to build with LRT. In fact TransLink’s planners have little knowledge of LRT as the region currently builds with much

more expensive light metro and to date has rejected LRT. One just does not add tracks on a bridge for rail transit, the bridge must be designed to operate with rail, especially true of a cable-stayed bridge and with no current planning for LRT, no tracks will be laid on the bridge, demonstrating that no rail transit will cross the bridge. There is only one bridge so designed for LRT or the modern tram

or streetcar and that is the Granville St. Bridge and no tram has ever crossed. The question I ask is why are we building a new bridge or tunnel at all, as supposedly we must reduce auto traffic significantly to comply with the government global warming targets? $4 billion could buy us a lot of LRT, about 160 km worth! Stop the attack on the Fraser Estuary Editor: Kathleen Fry’s evocative description of the migrating birds arriving in Delta struck a chord with me (Delta Optimist, Oct. 28). This was in stark contrast to the disaster that took place on Oct. 22 just off the southern tip of Vancouver Island, when a container ship headed for Deltaport on Roberts Bank lost over 100 containers in heavy seas. We may never know the extent of the environmental damage caused; it’s already clear that it’s

significant. We must oppose any further development with the potential to endanger the Fraser Estuary. This unique and essential habitat is already under serious threat from commercial and urban activity on land in the area and increased shipping traffic. The Roberts Bank Terminal 2 project has already been proven to be unnecessary from a business point of view, and will exponentially increase the number of container trucks and

trains, contributing to more air and noise pollution. It will destroy over 1,000 hectares of habitat and has already been condemned by Environment and Climate Change Canada scientists who have said the project’s impacts on biofilm (a critical food source for millions of shorebirds) “are anticipated to be high in magnitude, permanent, irreversible, and, continuous.” Do we really need to know anything else? Editor: Re: Ladner Legion Branch 061 – Poppy Campaign and Remembrance Day On behalf of the Royal Canadian Legion Delta Branch 061, we wish to extend our deepest appreciation to the overall community, for their support during this year’s Poppy Campaign. Total donations are somewhat less than last year, due in part to the inability of the Cadets, Girl Guides and Boy Scouts to fully assist us. These donations were, mostly achieved due to the large number of our dedicated members and members of the community who came forth to volunteer, with many of them doing more than one shift. We were also assisted, for the first time, by several Delta Firefighters who did

numerous shifts. We are ever so grateful for their support. Without these dedicated individuals we would not have the funds to give back to the community. In addition, we must also extend this appreciation to all the store merchants and the Delta School District for accepting our donation boxes in their stores and the School District for distributing and collecting all donations. These donations belong to the Community and will be distributed back into the Community in the coming months. We constantly monitor the Community and in particular our veterans and their families who may require assistance. We also believe that not having a regular Remembrance Day with thousands of residents

being in attendance may have been a factor. I find it difficult having a Remembrance Day without a proper ceremony with a parade and marching supporters and veterans. We would also like to mention the support we receive from the Delta Police Pipe Band who are so dedicated in honouring Remembrance Day and demonstrate that so gracefully when they play on parade. In closing we are indebted to everyone especially our patrons, who continue to support us in keeping the Legion operational during these uncertain and difficult times. Columnist couldn’t be more right about more affordable housing Re: More affordable options needed Editor: I am completely in agreement with Ms. Abbott about the poor choices being made for new housing in South Delta (Community Comment, Optimist, Nov. 11). I just witnessed another two monster houses go up on Central

Ave. to replace one small house. These houses are completely out of scale with the surrounding neighbourhood. Given the city apparently doesn’t care about scale, why do they keep approving monstrous, unaffordable houses when the same lot could accommodate an affordable duplex or row housing? Unless you are

a family of 10 you don’t need these enormous houses. I brought my two boys up in a 1,500 sq. foot duplex. We were perfectly comfortable. It is the time the city stopped listening to the naysayers and started directing developers to build housing that people can actually afford. Jane McCall

505-Junk hosting clothing drive fundraiser Help support mental health and suicide prevention by donating Saturday in Tsawwassen

505-Junk is hosting a clothing drive fundraiser on Saturday (Nov. 27) at the South Delta Recreation Centre in Tsawwassen. The purpose of the event is to raise funds for Movember, while providing Delta residents an opportunity to donate unwanted clothing in an environmentally-friendly manner. Here’s how it works: 505-Junk will have multiple trucks on site at the Rec Centre between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Residents are invited to drop off an unlimited amount of bagged clothing, which will be collected by the 505-Junk team on site. Residents are also welcome to donate a small amount to the team’s Movember fundraising campaign, however it is not required. 505-Junk will donate $0.10/ lb of clothing to the team’s Movember campaign. All clothing will be weighed on site with the company’s onboard weighing systems.

Beth Calder is preparing for another flood except this one consists of parcels and customers. The co-owner and general manager of Point-to-Point parcel service in Point Roberts is thrilled to learn starting Tuesday (Nov. 30) a negative PCR test is no longer required for fully-vaccinated Canadians to return through the border on trips 72 hours or less. Now she is bracing herself for what’s on the horizon. The ease of restrictions happens to coincide with Black Friday and Cyber Monday which is always the busiest time of year for the 21-year-old operation, as well as other parcel businesses in the tiny peneenclave of about 800 residents. Typically, Calder would have at least 10 people working for her during the hectic stretch. She currently has four staff members and unsure where

The operation has also made it through the last 20 months thanks to an increase in commercial activity as Point-to-Point was one of the only outlets that stayed open five days a week. Now, that’s going to seem like the calm before the storm. “Our phones and emails are going crazy with people telling us (the testing) is going to be removed,” added Calder. “Before (COVID), non-peak season we could easily be getting 300 packages a day from all the couriers. Peak season it’s 700 to 1000 pieces day. It gets crazy here at Christmas and you also have people that have stuff sitting in their (online) shopping cart and have been waiting to come down here. “Now I’m trying to figure out how I’m going to cover that. (Laughing) I’m wishing for a Christmas miracle!”

Deltassist looking for cash, cheques and gift card donations for Christmas support program DANI PENALOZA

With all the instability that has come with the pandemic, Deltassist is determined to help as many low-income families and seniors as they can this Christmas – and they need your help. In partnership with Delta service groups, Deltassist staff and volunteers are currently accepting cash, cheques and gift cards to help folks put food

on the table and gifts under trees on Christmas. The non-profit dedicated to Delta residents’ wellbeing is keeping their Christmas program restricted to monetary donations only again this year, with the goal of keeping the community, clients, volunteers and staff as safe as possible. Deltassist’s Christmas Coordinator Corinne Harrison notes that cash donations are preferred, as they can use it to purchase a bulk amount of gift

cards at a discounted price. Last year’s holiday season, Deltassist supported 659 families – and of that number, 951 children – within the community, she says. Already, a month after registration opened on Oct. 18, they were already at 400 clients, and expect a similar, if not higher, total number of registrants this year than they had last year, she says. Online donations are also being accepted on Deltassist’s

website, but otherwise can be dropped off or mailed to their Ladner (#202, 5000 Bridge St.) or North Delta (9097 120th St.) office. Both office’s hours are Monday to Friday from 9:30 a.m. to noon and then 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., if you are wanting to drop it off. Additionally, Deltassist also needs help stocking their Emergency Food Cupboard, and is looking for donations of pasta sauce, cereal, granola

Close to 100 decorated Christmas trees will be located around the clubhouse area and 18th hole of the golf resort, creating a festive evening walk through a forest of trees for those wanting to get into the holiday spirit. Nearby Nat’s Coffee House will be open for hot beverages and snacks. The event is a huge fundraiser for the Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation with over $32,000 generated in 2020 which went towards

the purchase of a muchneeded Colonoscope for Delta Hospital. This year, the goal is to purchase two Cardiac Monitors for the Emergency Department. The money is raised by local businesses paying a set fee to sponsor their tree which they also decorate. The generosity of Harris Nursery also plays a big part by donating and delivering all the trees. Members of the Delta Firefighters Charitable Society gave up their time last Friday to help with the delivery and tree setup. With COVID-19 safety restrictions in mind, there will not be an opening ceremony for a second straight year and the ice rink will also not be in operation. Instead the area will be used for photo opportunities.

different ecosystems host different species of plants and animals. Here in Delta, blueberry crops are dependent on commercial honey bees and native bees for pollination. In the spring when blueberries are flowering, pollinators feed on the flowers’ nectar. A pollinator will collect pollen from the male part of a flower (the anther) and then transfer that pollen to the female part of another flower (the stigma). But once the flowers have been fertilized and develop into berries, pollinators are left without a food source. By enhancing sections of farmland with habitat containing flowering plants, farmers can ensure the continued availability of foraging resources for pollinators. Gurprit Brar is a local grower who plants clover strips on his fields

in order to attract pollinators and maintain a healthy ecosystem. “It’s our duty to leave them flowers so that they have a food source in the off season … once we have those management practices that encourage native pollinators, they will start to work for us,” says Brar. Supporting pollinators is critical to ensuring the future of food security. It is estimated that pollinators are responsible for sourcing one out of every three bites of food we consume. Although effective, these management strategies can be costly for growers. This is why Delta Farmland & Wildlife Trust offers various stewardship programs that share with farmers the cost of enhancing farmland with natural habitat such as planting grass and floral strips. This year, a global shipping container shortage has seen the average cost to move a 40-foot steel container of cargo by sea rise by upwards of 500% above the seasonal average, according to Drewry Shipping. In this regard, the Advent wreath is a powerful symbol. The circle of the wreath represents eternal life, and the unbrokenness of God’s presence and promise. Delta Photo Club presents “Abstract Art Photography” with awardwinning fine art photographer Ursula Abresch on Wednesday, Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m. “Abstract images do not have an immediate recognizable association with visible, concrete reality,” said Abresch. “They also are images that originate from reality, but create their own reality. I use elements such as colour, light, shadow, line, shape and texture to show memories, feelings, sensations and impressions. Delta streets will be filled with the sounds of children’s revolting righteous rebellion when Delta Youth Theatre presents Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical Jr. from Dec. 3 to 12 at the Equinox Theatre (SDSS) in Tsawwassen. Based on the beloved book Matilda and adapted from the 2013 awardwinning full-length musical, Matilda The Musical Jr. tells the story of an extraordinary girl who, armed with a vivid imagination, a sharp mind and psychokinetic powers dares to take a stand, and in so doing, changes the course of her life story. The show is directed and choreographed by DYT’s Tony Barton and Tracy Neff, whose company offers pre-professional training for young performers through DYT’s year-long season and many acclaimed shows. “Early on in the show Matilda sings, ‘Even if you’re little you can do a lot,’ says Neff about one of the shows’ musical numbers. “It’s a powerful reminder for each of us, with all of our unique

quirks and personal obstacles, to take ownership for our circumstance and to do everything we can to improve ourselves, and our lives.” Picking up on the theme of taking personal responsibility for your life, Barton comments, “Working with these young people constantly reminds Tracy and I that ‘little’ people can do a lot. We set the bar high for them and expect excellence no matter how old they are or what talents they bring to the table.” Barton and Neff both add that they are always inspired by the commitment these young people have to delivering consistently high quality work. Barton and Neff wanted to expose DYT’s student performers to other instructors and directors for Matilda The Musical Jr., and so brought in guest instructors Susan Bertoia and Darren Burkett. Bertoia is a celebrated Vancouver creator, actor and educator. A faculty member of the UBC theatre department, Bertoia specializes in devised theatre, physical theatre and commedia dell’arte. “Watching Susan work is thrilling. She shows

you what creativity looks like in action. It’s exciting, uncomfortable, beautiful, messy and everything in between,” said Neff. “Having Darren join the production team has been a huge benefit as he toured with the Broadway National tour of Matilda. “He is also a gifted teacher and choreographer.” Neff and Barton met Darren in 2009 at the Chemainus Theatre Festival when they all performed in Oklahoma. “He not only brings the musical numbers, Bruce, and Revolting Children, to life for our show, he’s also brought a depth of understanding about the original creation of show,” added Barton. Delta Youth Theatre’s production of Matilda has been in the works for two years, says Barton who will also make an appearance as the dreaded character Agatha Trunchbull in casts one and four. Tsawwassen’s Bettina Harvey applies an emotional, sensorial lens to the science of dendrochronology – the study of counting and examining tree rings to understand their lives – in her latest art series, Dendrochroma. Until Feb. 4, the “Mood Rings” part of her series will be exhib-

ited alongside other science-inspired works at Science World in Vancouver. “Inspired by her own experiences watching her father lose his memory to dementia, Dendrochroma explores the tangible and intangible relationship between colour, memory and natural elements through driftwood, graphite and bright, powerful colours,” reads her press release.

Using the drawings of driftwood as her foundation, Harvey uses colour gradients to represent the changing, aging mind in terms of emotion, perception and personality. The smooth blending and bleeding of the colours into one another signifies how the past affects the experience of aging. “Harvey’s process reacts to the ‘thermo-

chromic’ mood rings of the mid-1970s – a fad that mistook changes in body temperature as mood swings, indicated by transformations in colour. The fad is part of a larger cultural impulse to connect colour gradations with mood, and Harvey’s pieces pay homage to the ongoing fascination with colour as an expression of intricate and complicated experiences of emotion,”

Dendrochroma has grown from her previous series, “Drift” – a graphite drawing collection inspired by pieces of driftwood her father had chosen and gifted to her as the two walked along beaches together after he had been diagnosed with dementia. Using that same reasoning, they will not be hosting their usual Breakfast with Santa event this year. “We’re just a volunteer organization and we don’t really have the protocols in place to be able to have that kind of large crowd indoors, serving food, so we’re just going to hold off again for one more year and see what next year brings,” says Lawlor-Cooper.

In late October, the LBA held its annual general meeting to discuss who would be on the board, as four previous members, including past president Jill McKnight, were stepping back. The new board members are Deborah Charles from Wellspring Wills & Estate planning, Dianne Smith from RACR Services Inc., Svetlana Loif from Chopped Leaf and Jonathon Fluevog from Fluevog Films. Voted onto the executive team during the first board meeting in November were Lawlor-Cooper of Dynacor Coatings (2004) Ltd. as president, Valerie Miller of Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust as vice president, Mandip Gill of Sutton Group - Seafair Realty as secretary and Alviene Wilkins of Vinca’s Kitchen as treasurer. Though there won’t be gingerbread decorating this year to keep the event more COVID-friendly, there will be individually-wrapped gingerbread cookies available for kids. The colouring contest will also still be running, but instead of children all colouring together at the event, the LBA has made the colouring sheet available on their website and in select stores throughout the Village to do beforehand and bring to the festival. Business was in the spotlight and success was on the menu as the Delta Chamber of Commerce hosted its 70th annual Hats Off to Excellence Awards Friday night (Nov. 19) at Tsawwassen Springs. Returning to an in-person gala after last year’s event went virtual due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a smaller crowd came together to celebrate the Delta business community. “Tonight we are fortunate to be here…in person…to celebrate the business excellency in our community and this is a tremendous feat,” said Jill McKnight, executive director of the Chamber of Commerce.

Since 1910 the Delta Chamber of Commerce has been the voice of business in the community. The annual awards gala is a chance to recognize business and business achievement in the community. Six awards were hand-

ed out as well, recognition was paid to outgoing executive director Garry Shearer as well as longstanding business leader and chamber member Gordon Payne, who passed away in October. Delta’s Citizen of the Year was presented posthumously to Optimist general manager and community champion Dave Hamilton. (See related story online and on page one). Sixty-eight-year-old Shirley Loewen and her husband, Ken (74), recently maneuvered through the process of finding a long-term care facility for Ken’s mother. It was tough to know where to start, “We did a lot of Googling, a lot of calling different locations,” Shirley notes. “It was all so foreign to us.” In the end, their efforts paid off; they found a facility that suited Ken’s mom well, her quality of life improved, and she is flourishing there. Shirley and Ken aren’t alone; struggling to speak the foreign language of senior living is a predicament many find themselves in. A desire to bring some clarity to a complex and sometimes stressful topic is what drove Bria Communities to develop a free 18-page inter-

Instead of looking at potential match-ups, it’s fuel rationing and road closures at the forefront this week for the South Delta Sun Devils senior girls volleyball team. The top ranked Sun Devils should be taking aim at a fourth B.C. School Sports champions banner in program history at next week’s B.C. AAAA tournament in Nanaimo. However, the showcase event could be downsized to a regional tournament due to last week’s storm resulting in highway closures and fuel rationing. That’s already happen with high school football playoffs that have been divided into Coastal

and Interior playdowns. Volleyball teams will know their fate sometime on Wednesday, beyond the Optimist deadline. Sun Devils head coach Dan Burgess learned Monday his team can travel to Nanaimo next week as long as the province-wide fuel rationing has been lifted by then. However, he is fully expecting to be playing in a regional tournament with travel being so limited. The most recent B.C. AAAA rankings featured three Interior schools among the top 10 – Kelowna, Mt. Boucherie and Okanagan-Mission. “I don’t think they will come and I don’t think B.C. School Sports will call it a provincial (tournament) anymore,” said Burgess. “I don’t get

stress about things I can’t control. I hope the girls realize that too. This is above our paygrade. You take what you can get.” Regardless of what happens, the Sun Devils at least produced a pair of big victories in the last couple of weeks. After capturing the Red Serge Classic in dramatic fashion in Port Coquitlam, the girls added a South Fraser playoff title with a four-set win over the Seaquam Seahawks in last week’s championship match played at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary in Cloverdale. Senior Jane McDonald earned tournament MVP honours. Teammates Myah Cressy and Mackenzie Campbell were named all-stars.

Surging Pacers earn first B.C. berth in over a decade It’s not how you start the season but rather how you finish and there is no better proof of that than the Delta Pacers senior girls volleyball team. After opening South Fraser Tier One League play with a 1-3 record, the Pacers have been rolling since, culminating with a second place finish at the South Fraser AAA Championships after a dramatic five-set loss to No. 3 provincially ranked and host McMath in the gold medal match. The result secures Delta its first B.C. tournament berth in at least a decade. The girls are guided by parent volunteer Grant Hornby. His daughters graduated two

POPE, Russell September 2, 1929 − November 19, 2021 The Man Who Always Wore a Smile Russell Pope, 92, passed away peacefully holding the hand of his loving wife, Linda, on November 19. Always a fighter, Russ fought a courageous battle with his family by his side and will be sorely missed by all. Born in Detroit, Michigan, his family moved back home to their native Cornwall, UK to live and work on the family farm. As a young man, Russ entered the British Air Force where his love for aviation grew and prompted a move to Ontario, Canada, where he met Lin. That’s where he was fortunate enough to begin working on the famous Avro Arrow, before moving to Montreal and concluding his aviation career at TCA and Canadair. Russ and Lin moved to the lower mainland where they both worked and retired at BC Tel. The pair settled in Ladner, BC and they spent many years travelling the world together. Russ always said his favourite trip was the cruise he and Lin took up the Amazon River. Russ enjoyed lawn bowling and playing cards at the Ladner Lawn Bowling Club as well as carpet bowling at McKee House where he formed lasting friendships. Russ will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 64 years, Lin; and his three children, Maureen Pope− Fergusson, Doug Pope (Tami), and Cherie Zessler (Tom). He is also survived by his eight grandchildren and three great−grandchildren. Russ chose to see the best in people and had a passion for life and travel. His smile was contagious and he loved to make people laugh. Russ was always there to help anyone who needed a helping hand. Russ was a genuine man who enriched the lives of those who were fortunate enough to have known him. While our hearts ache knowing he is gone, we will cherish the many fond memories we enjoyed with him. The family would like to thank Delta Hospital, the Fraser Health Palliative Team, and the Irene Thomas Hospice Society for their compassionate care.
