About Bowen Deng School of Architecture & Urban Planning Huazhong University of Science & Technology E-mail: bowendeng1990@gmail.com Tel: +86-15972106512

Design is capable of inciting various feelings among spectators and guiding the behavior and lifestyle of individuals by managing materials and landscape. It is not merely perceptual, but rational as well. It is a scientific subject that allows both scrupulous analysis and expression of emotions. These factors explain my strong inclination to design studies. I recognize the importance of building cities to address human demands for functionality and efficiency. Cities are areas in which human civilization is highly centralized. As it utilizes resources and energy from nature while constantly producing waste, a city is said to adversely impact natural circulation. Aside from creating urban spaces or meeting human requirements, urban design deals with the relationship between nature and city.

For the site was a clearing, people lived in this area always pass through it to take a shortcut, with a glimpse of the Rong Yuan Cafe, which is a classicism architecture of France and used to be the apartment of missionary years ago, but now a leisure place. To reserve this shortcut and enlarge the leisure space for people who live in such a high building density area, so I elevated the ground floor and made the gallery underground.

Wind Environment Transformation Team Work March.2010-June.2010 Project Type: Urban Regeneration Planning Project Location: Hankou District, Wuhan, China Tutor: Prof. Shaobo Hao

Site Analysis

The site was located in the riverside of Hankou district, Wuhan city. The dense water network of this city has formed natural corridors and divided the landscape, these make Wuhan a climate sensitive city. For these reasons, wind plays great essential role to this large city, espercially in such a riverside site. Regeneration Analysis

Result of Stage-1 Problems & Effect

High building density brought problems on lighting and ventilation. The open ground approach to the river guide strong wind to the site. Two high-rise buildings formed "Canyon Effect". The transmeridional commercial buildings along the street caused "wind shadow".

Result of Stage-2 Problems & Effect

The "wind shadow area" of the buildings located in the southeast is large. The newly-built cultural centre building has bad effect on ventilation.

Result of Stage-3 Renewal

Earth covered construction balanced greening and ventilation. Improve the ventilation of the two courtyards located in the northwest. Three courtyards in the northeast formed a group so that improved the ventilation. Open ground space around the communities to improve the ventilation. Elevated the ground floor to guide the wind into courtyards so as to improve the wind environment. High-rise buildings formed "wind shadow" left comfortable activity space to the users in winter.

Optical Valley Center Design Team Work March.2012-June.2012 Project Type: Small Public Space Design Project Location: Optical Valley, Wuhan, China Tutor: Prof.Jun Wu

Site Location

The site is the joint of six main roads of Hongshan district and it's located in the center of optical valley high-tech district of Wuhan, where settled a number of universities and colleges here, called University Town. It links its surrounding schools, residential district, shoping mall, hotel, office building and pedestrian street, etc. Not only an essential central area and traffic hub of optical valley district, optical valley center, is also the symbol of Wuhan City. Site Investigation

Six main roads of Hongshan district and the surrounding mixed functional areas make Optical Valley Center not only simply a traffic hub, but also brought it commercial value and social meaning. There are schools, communities, shopping malls, office buildings and other mixed functional areas around the center, this reason makes the user groups various, they may be children, teenages, adults or old people, busy or free. People's various demands brought us difficulties, for these cases, we need to deal with this site carefully, as it was located in such a central piont of Hongshan district and a essential landmark for this large city.

Page 64

Problem & Strategy

Accessibility

Crowd Density

There used to be only one passage to the center, and as such a busy traffic hub, the utilization rate of the cental ground is always low. To guarantee the accessibility of Optical Valley Center and separate people from vehicles, we designed six underground passages to allow people reach the center or just pass through it.

Regard the people who are within the scope of the buildings to the road edge as users, we selected everyday's 9:00, 12:00, 15:00, 18:00 as observation time. The crowd density deciding whether it need to add an underground passage entrance and exit. According to the investigation, B, C, D, E, F area need to add one but A area not.

VGA Analysis

Inward & Outward

Analyse by VGA(Visibility Graph Analysis) principle, arrive at a conclusion about the relationship of view point and field of vision, in order to tell the visible degree by point density and color depth. As the analysis graphics tells,we selected the dark blue area to build the architecture.

The main effect comes from the nearby heavy traffic, which brought noise and vehicle exhaust. To solve this problem, we lower the height of the ground, build the edge of the ground in gentle slope and set plants to keep the noise and exhaust away.
