Choate Rosemary Hall — Master Plan Update & Student Center Concept Wallingford, Connecticut
Campus Plan: Scheme 2 (Owner selected)
Campus Center Concept Project Size: Project Type: Client Type:
400 acres Master Plan/Concept Boarding/Day School
Campus Plan: Scheme 1
A 2012 update of Choate Rosemary Hall’s Master Plan establishes guiding principles that preserve and enhance the campus’ architectural legacy and create logical and balanced activity zones, while promoting landscape stewardship and fostering environmental sustainability. The 2012 Master Plan update builds upon BGA’s 2006 comprehensive Master Plan for the school, which presented strategic land use recommendations for a 458-acre campus with consideration of academics, residential life, community life, athletics, administration and support, vehicular and pedestrian circulation, parking, wayfinding, and campus identity. To assess possible sites for new facilities, BGA and the client developed evaluation criteria such as impact on school culture and traditions, proximity to related facilities, and impact on campus vistas and landscape. Proposed campus improvements were prioritized into near-term, mid-term, and long-term time frames to dovetail with implementation and fundraising efforts. In 2014, BGA was selected to proceed with the design of a new campus center, including a 1200-seat auditorium.
Lake Forest Academy — Master Plan Lake Forest, Illinois
Project Size: 162 acres Project Type: Master Plan Client Type: Boarding/Day School
Lake Forest Academy, a coed boarding and day school for 380-students near Chicago, is built on an elegant c.1908 Italianate estate. A master plan completed by Bowie Gridley Architects in 2007 carefully considers existing wetlands and champion trees, respecting and enhancing the site’s natural beauty. The BGA master plan grew out of the Academy’s strategic plan, focusing on needs for new dormitories, faculty housing and improved athletic facilities. Siting for future academic facilities and support functions was also considered. The Plan features a new quadrangle linking the new Athletics entrance to a new Student Center, to be housed in a renovated building. A new pedestrian friendly campus green frames new dormitories. The Plan also calls for reconfiguration of vehicular circulation to emphasize the feeling of community among boarding students and to enhance views of existing lakes and formal gardens on the 162-acre campus.
Graland Country Day School — Master Plan Denver, Colorado
Project Size: 47,000 sf Project Type: Master Plan Client Type: Day School
Bowie Gridley Architects completed a master plan and concept design for Graland Country Day School to accommodate future growth and maximize utilization of its existing facilities. After exploring design alternatives and programmatic issues, BGA proposed replacing an aging building on campus with a new one that would connect to the existing Gates Middle School. The new space, along with a renovated middle school, would add computer labs, expand the science classroom space, and other advanced classrooms, including a shop and LEGO lab. BGA optimized the current space layout, by reducing the footprint of book stacks in the library, and creating multipurpose spaces that would serve as classrooms and after school program spaces. BGA was also able to meet the school’s goals of maintaining open, outdoor spaces for playing and gathering.
ACADEMICS
The Lowell School — Parkside Middle School Renovation Washington, DC
Project Size: 36,298 sf Project Type: Renovation & Addition Client Type: Independent School
Lowell School, located on an eight-acre campus adjacent to Rock Creek Park in northwest Washington, DC, made the strategic decision to create a new Middle School (grades 6 through 8) to complement its existing Elementary School program. After an extensive master planning process, BGA concluded that the best solution was to renovate the existing Parkside Building. Lowell intended to grow the middle school program over a three to four year period, so a multi-phased renovation plan was implemented. After a series of modest, carefully targeted interior renovations, the final phase included a major addition and complete renovation/configuration of the existing interior. With a focus on a STEM curriculum—combining inquiry, logical reasoning, collaboration, and investigation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics—the new 36,300 sf Parkside Middle School houses classrooms, a science lab and maker spaces, library, art studios, gathering and study spaces, and a black box theater.
