Australian Champion takes on Retail Role at Melbourne Bowls Centre It's not everyone who is lucky enough to combine their sporting passion with their work however Tiffany Brodie has been able to do just that. The reigning Australian U18 Bowler of the Year has taken up a position at local bowls retailer Melbourne Bowls Centre, in Fairfield. Her new role will allow the young champion the opportunity to assist other bowlers with her expertise. The last 12 months have been a break out year for Tiffany, winning both the Australian Open Fours and the Under 18 singles, as well as being the current holder of both the U18 and U25 Victorian Singles and a regular in the Victorian side. She's also represented the Melbourne Roys in the Bowls Premier League in QLD and earlier this month in New Zealand. "Winning the two Australian Open titles was a highlight for me last year," said Tiffany. "I like all disciplines but I love singles. I think I often play my best bowls during singles. Bowls is a mental game - in singles it's all up to me. I think I'm able to mentally prepare well for a game and perform even under pressure." After finishing year 12 last year, Tiffany deferred her offer for a tertiary place in a Health Sciences course to focus on her bowls and to have the freedom to travel to events. It was during this time that she received an offer from Manager, Tan Houghton, at Melbourne Bowls Centre, who was looking for another staff member to join his small team. "We are thrilled to have Tiffany on board here in the store," he said. "Not only does she bring a range of experience competing at all level of bowls but she has a smile on her face all the time. She's great with the customers and can really give them an extra level of assistance." "I play a lot of bowls," said Tiffany, "and I know all the products and equipment. When people come into the shop with questions I like to be able to help them out and help them to get the right product for them." "Some people are looking for a new set of bowls but don't know much about the brands and models that are out there. I can give them the benefit of my experience. I am more than happy to answer any questions they have and give them advice on their game and their equipment. I enjoy helping other bowlers to improve their game and being a staff member at Melbourne Bowls Centre gives me the chance to do that." "Our biggest selling bowl is the Henselite Dreamline XG, it's the one that most customers ask for. It's great on all surfaces and in all weather conditions so it's very versatile. We also have a great range of bags, shoes, clothing and other accessories." "With the end of the season here in Victoria, we've got some great sales on bowls at the moment so there is an opportunity to come in and grab a bargain." At the time of publication, Tiffany is pulling on the green and gold for Australia in the World Youth Games at Broadbeach on the Gold Coast. And when she's not bowling or selling bowls, she likes to explore Victoria's scenery, particularly down on the Mornington Penninsula. And more than likely, you'll find her hanging out with her large family who she loves to spend time with.

The Ballarat Bowling Club was formed on the 13th December 1864 at a meeting held at Ahrens Exchange Hotel in Ballarat. Initially it began as the Victoria Bowling Club, however, in April 1865, the resident members felt that given it was the only bowling club outside of Melbourne; it should reflect the name of the town. And so it became the Ballarat Bowling Club. has existed on the current site since Ballarat Itinception, after being granted a portion of the land at the "Eastern Recreation reserve" by Bowling Club the council of the time - the Eastern Borough Council. This formation date makes the club the second oldest bowling club in Australia.

An iconic aircraft lands an exciting new home
Architectural rendering of Melbourne Jet Base, coming in 2018.
For those who haven’t been following the story – the team of restoration experts at Melbourne Aviation Precinct (MAP) have been busily making history, and preserving it, with a dedicated and extensive effort to restore a Douglas DC-3. The aircraft, known as ‘Kanana’, is the third DC-3 ever to be imported to Australia. And, in addition to being a rare beauty, Kanana certainly has a rich history. Constructed in California in 1938, Kanana was charted by the Australian Government for use by the Royal Australian Air Force at the start of World War II. It was then registered to Ansett ANA in 1961, and shortly thereafter to airlines in South Australia. In 1972, Kanana operated its final scheduled revenue service – but remained active in the years to follow, being used for charter flights and air shows. Now, at 79 years old, Kanana has spent many years on the ground. But the dedicated group of engineers at MAP are looking to see the aircraft soar again. And, after extensive restoration efforts, rigorous testing, and an internal facelift, they’re on the brink of achieving that goal. A handful of lucky passengers will be among the first to fly in the restored aircraft, sharing this special experience with travellers many generations before them. Soon, Kanana will also gain a new home – it will be settling down at Melbourne Jet Base, a premier private aviation facility that is currently under construction. Located onsite at Melbourne Aviation Precinct, Melbourne Jet Base will be Australia’s first curfew-free purpose-built private jet base – truly leading the way for the future of Australian aviation. The world-class facility will include a display hangar, where Kanana will be viewed by admirers from all over the globe as they make their way into Melbourne in style. With Kanana on display, Melbourne Jet Base will have yet another competitive edge – offering travellers the unique experience of journeying back through time as they journey into Melbourne.
A recent photo of Kanana showing the refurbished engines and propellers newly reinstalled.
Melbourne Jet Base is proud to represent the future of Australian aviation, and pay homage to its rich history with Kanana. 09
Australian Sides Championships The coveted Australian Sides Championships will feature 192 of our nation’s premier bowlers descending on the pristine greens of Lockleys Bowling Club in South Australia. Lockleys is no stranger to hosting elite bowlers having held the World Bowls Championships in 2012 and the Australian Sides Championships back in 2010. Across three rinks, men’s and women’s teams from each State or Territory will battle it out over four days to determine which state walks away with bragging rights; and with three trophies up for grabs there is plenty to play for. The Sides Championships, which has an illustrious history dating back to 1959, is the sport’s only national state versus state competition, and features the top 12 men and women from each State and Territory across the nation, with the revered Alley Shield being awarded to the victorious men’s team and the coveted Marj Morris Trophy handed to the winning women’s outfit. South Australians will be flying high on home soil with their Australian Jackaroos and BPL stars Scott Thulborn, Wayne Ruediger, Max Kleinig and Breeana Johnson (see Dickson) leading the charge for the home town favourites.

Defending Men’s Alley Shield Champions Victoria have experienced mixed results in the test matches leading up to the prestigious Australian Sides Championships; however as we witnessed last year in the Nation’s Capital, the Big V bring their best when the best is required. The New South Wales women are looking to extend their history making winning streak, with a sixth consecutive Marj Morris trophy to their states trophy cabinet. With a host of Australian representatives and up-and-coming young stars in their midst, New South Wales will prove hard to beat yet again, as will the New South Wales men’s team which is stacked full of big name players. Another powerhouse state Queensland have all the potential to get back into the winners circle and have arguably picked the youngest team in their State’s proud history. Watch out for Australian Open Under-18 Singles runner-up Jessica Srisamruaybai and Australian Under-18 representative Jacob Nelson leading off for the maroons alongside Australia’s best, Lynsey Clarke, Brett Wilkie and Nathan Rice. Tasmania will be out to cause some upsets headed by three-time World Champion Bec Van Asch and former Australian representative Lee Schraner; a man currently leading the way in the National Rankings. Spectators are encouraged to take advantage of the free admission at Lockleys Bowling Club to watch the best bowlers in the country going head to head in the Australian Sides Championship this week - from April 6 to April 9.

The Bowls Show to return to SBS for season two in 2017 SBS Director of Sport Ken Shipp said The Bowls Show had established a strong following in its first season and he hopes to see the program continue to grow among the whole Australian community. “SBS is pleased to continue broadcasting The Bowls Show free-to-air for all Australians this year for a second season,” Shipp said. “The sport has a dedicated and passionate following, and we look forward to seeing the audience grow on SBS in 2017.” Tune in Sundays from May 14 at 3.00pm to 4.00pm on SBS, or if you miss and episode, simply catch-up with replays online via SBS On Demand. The Bowls Show will be produced by Elite Entertainment Productions, in partnership with Bowls Australia and SBS.
Bowls will continue to be broadcast on free-to-air television in 2017. The sport of bowls will remain on free-to-air television in 2017, following the announcement that Bowls Australia and SBS have renewed their partnership with the extension of The Bowls Show for a second season. The Bowls Show’s second season will return to SBS on Sunday, May 14, in the new time-slot of 3.00pm nationwide.
Bowls Australia will maintain its relationship with Fox Sports as the sport’s official Pay-TV partner, which will continue to televise more than 50 hours of live Bowls Premier League and Australian Open coverage annually, in addition to other events. Penola Bowling Club
The hour-long weekly program will again be shown across 20 weeks, up until October 22, due to a four-week hiatus from July 2-23 for SBS’s broadcast of the Tour de France. Jack Heverin will return to the hosting role, in addition to anchoring the commentary of events, alongside the sport’s biggest personalities, like Steve Glasson OAM, Karen Murphy and Kelvin Kerkow OAM, amongst others. Viewers will be treated to content from this year’s World Junior Championships, Australia v England Test Series, Australian Open and Australian Indoor Championships, as well as segments on coaching, development, high performance, club and social bowls and club profiles, in addition to feature interviews with stars of the sport.
Division 2 Pennant team : back Row Gerardine Williams, Kaye Batt, Kay Fennell and Sue McShane. Front Row Margaret Hanel, Claire Larkin, Liz Copping and Julie Starick.
Bowls Australia Chief Executive Officer Neil Dalrymple said that the continuation of The Bowls Show was an enormous opportunity to showcase the sport, but it needs to be supported weekly by the bowls community, as further seasons are contingent on ratings success. “The first season of The Bowls Show surpassed expectations and achieved a total cumulative reach of more than 970,000 unique viewers,” Dalrymple said. “With the new time-slot of 3.00pm, it’s vitally important that the second season receives even stronger viewership from devoted bowlers, while also making inroads to appeal to a broader cross-section of society, such as social bowlers and even people that haven’t participated in bowls before. “Bowlers have been very vocal in voicing their desire to see the sport broadcast on free-to-air platforms over the years, and the production of The Bowls Show is a considerable investment for the sport, so I strongly encourage all stakeholders of the sport to promote the initiative far and wide and to tune-in to the program weekly to ensure that it remains on free-to-air television.” 12
Division 3 Pennant team: back Row Rose Coote, Heather Lambert, Bet Wilkin, Sue Lamont. Front Row: Christine Skeer, Mary Davis, Nanette Wallace and Maureen Konynenburg. Penola Bowling Club had a great season with both Ladies Pennant teams reaching the Grand Final in the LSEBA. Kelsey Cottrell’s take on BPL05 Australian star Kelsey Cottrell has experienced a number of Bowls Premier League events up close, in her role as Communications Coordinator, but witnessed the competition from a new angle in last week’s BPL05, as a player of the Club Helensvale Gold Coast Hawks. Here’s how Kelsey viewed the whole experience.
The fifth instalment of the revolutionary Bowls Premier League promised so much and delivered; with the quality of matches raising the competition to new levels, the staging of the event in a venue outside of the traditional bowls environment, a franchise going back-to-back for the first time in the event’s history, and a record crowd for finals night.
It came down to the final round of sectional play, and in particular the match between the Murray Steamers and the New Zealand Blackjacks; if New Zealand won they would climb to second on the ladder and force the Sydney Lions to a sudden death elimination final, if the Murray Steamers lost the encounter they were out of the competition and the Perth Suns would slide into the finals.
Much can be said about the remarkable back-to-back feat of the BCiB Sydney lions, but with the trophy firmly in their hands and back on Australian soil, the winner’s picture (enclosed in this article) speaks a thousand words.
I wish I could describe Ryan Bester’s last bowl of the second set in more detail but all you need to know is he played one of the shots of the event under immense pressure, forcing the match into a tie-breaker and keeping the Steamers’ finals hopes alive.
Not only did the franchise achieve something unwitnessed in BPL history; they accomplished it on international soil against the crowd favourite Tower New Zealand Blackjacks in an epic final encounter.
The tie-breaker came down to a running shot by Shannon McIlroy, who in all seriousness was never going to miss considering the form he was in, it was just a matter of whether the jack stayed in bounds or was re-spotted in the Steamers’ favour; and as you would know having watched the finals night, the jack went out by centimetres and it was the Steamers who advanced to the finals.
Ben Twist, Karen Murphy and Aron Sherriff looked nothing short of the team to beat from start to finish, well perhaps that four game losing streak toward the end of the competition was exactly in the script, but a champion team will always bounce back and that’s exactly what they did, guided by National Coach Steve Glasson OAM. While touching on the exceptional performances, the utmost praise must be given to World Singles Champion Shannon McIlroy who joined an illustrious group of BPL MVP winners. There wouldn’t be a single person involved in the event or whom watched from afar that would dispute the voting that saw McIlroy, who is in the form of his career and phenomenal on both the indoor and outdoor surfaces, with the honour. People who caught the action on day three would have witnessed the shot of the tournament when McIlroy drew within inches of the ditch against the Blundstone Melbourne Roys in the tie-break to snatch the victory. If there was a prize for most entertaining team, the Roys would certainly win that, if there was a prize for the most unpredictable team, the Roys would likely get that too! The commentator’s favourite player to interview would no doubt be the Crown Perth Suns John Slavich, who also gave viewers some fresh sayings to use on the bowling green, like “killer shot.” I know a lot of people back home were hoping to see the underdog team, the Perth Suns, sneak into the finals, and I can tell you if you’re looking for someone to blame, it would be Moama Bowling Club’s Murray Steamers skip Ryan Bester! 14 bowls plus victoria april-may 2017
At the other end of the spectrum, I can mention the wooden spoon because it wasn’t my franchise; the Adelaide Endurance were cellar dwellers on this occasion, but having contested every finals series since the inaugural BPL, having one minor slip up can surely be tolerated. Once again the decision to have a female in each franchise stood firm as having a positive impact on the event, and whilst all should be commended for their efforts in the toughest competition in the world, I have to stand Kristina Krstic, Ellen Ryan and Jo Edwards out for yet another consistent performance for their franchises. Whilst I know the future of Australian bowls is in extremely safe hands, I think the whole the country now knows what our bright young female stars are made of, and we will no doubt be seeing more of them when BPL06 comes back around in eight short months this November. How many sports can say that men and women compete against each other at the highest of levels; I can’t think of any, and whilst women’s AFL and women’s Cricket are experiencing meteoric rises and a positive change to public opinion, bowls has always been a sport where men and women can compete on an even playing field, so we have something pretty special to showcase. A lot has been said about the use of the portable rink for the first time in the Southern Hemisphere and I personally think this is the start of something truly ground-breaking for our sport.
Yes, there were some tracks to keep the players on their toes, but the pace of the portable rink was easily 16, and the fact that it was placed inside a basketball arena was something I never thought I’d see in bowls. It’s easy to let your imagination run wild at the endless possibilities for future BPLs; playing in convention centres, casinos, bustling city streets or close to beaches and the best thing about all of that is the possibility of exposing live, world class bowls to people who have never seen it before. The attendance on finals night was sensational and provided the most amazing atmosphere from a player’s perspective Obviously, a big test will come when the ratings from Sky Sport NZ and Fox Sports Australia are revealed but from what I’ve been hearing around the greens this week, Australians were right behind the BPL and loved that games were kicking off and finishing a bit earlier than previous events courtesy of that time difference. Changing things up a bit, how awesome was Clive Adams on the microphone during the live broadcast matches? For people who weren’t aware, Clive Adams from Western Australia, a former Perth Suns player, introduced the teams onto the rink, announced the power-plays during the matches, and updated the spectators of results, among other things, he sure did get in the spirit and create a great atmosphere inside the venue. It would be rude of me not to mention the fantastic volunteers who were not only quick learners, with many locals having to learn the rules and get used to the fast paced nature of the format in just two days, but they were also friendly and hospitable hosts for all the teams.
Speaking of hosts, the eight New Zealand host clubs did a great job supporting their teams, with many of them purchasing corporate boxes, attending the day and night games, decking themselves out in their team’s colours and hosting the franchises, along with their friends and family to a welcome night at their clubs. Some of them even cheered for their adopted teams when they faced off with the New Zealand Blackjacks, which was completely above and beyond their hosting duties! Some people may have been wondering who was inside those mascot outfits; well on many occasions it was volunteers from the franchises host clubs who really got into the spirit of BPL. I couldn’t finish reviewing the BPL without mentioning the amazing support I received from the Gold Coast Hawks franchise owners Club Helensvale. There was a sea of green and gold every night with so many members from Club Helensvale making the trek across the ditch to cheer on the Hawks and they sure made me feel very welcomed as their teams late call up. We say all the time that BPL is going to get bigger and better, and I can honestly say that it will. Upon returning from BPL05 the BPL committee, Bowls Australia staff and Licensee holders of the eight franchises have already begun circulating a paper with new ideas going forward, including but not limited to possible rule changes and expansion discussions. Don’t be surprised if over the next couple of years we have more BPLs staged each year, new teams and new rules and increased opportunity to witness the action through live streaming. It may have just wrapped up, but like many others, I can’t wait for the next Bowls Premier League!

The Australian Open is back and promises to be bigger and better than ever!
The Australian Open always had the potential to be the biggest event in the world but it wasn’t until the event relocated to the fabulous Gold Coast that this became reality. The Australian Open is now the richest bowls event in the world, over 2000 bowlers from all over the world enter the two week festival of bowls, and now after three years being hosted in Queensland, all signs are pointing toward 2017 being the best Australian Open to date. Entries have already begun piling in from competitors all over the globe wanting their taste of the $250,000 premier bowls event commencing on June 10 to 23. South Australians have tasted plenty of success at the Australian Open with Steven Dennis, Nathan Pedersen, Wayne Ruediger and Scott Thulborn combining to win the fours and pairs since the events relocation to the Gold Coast.
Well of course first and foremost a two week long bowling holiday on the beautiful Gold Coast during winter; and remember you can hardly call it winter when the temperature hovers above 22 degrees, the Gold Coast, Queensland water temperature is 21 degrees and the skies are clear! The prize money breakdown was adjusted and now 540 prizes are awarded throughout the event, therefore you can be rewarded for your victories as early as the round of 128 in the men’s singles. Once upon a time arduous qualifying was required for you to make the main field of the Australian Open but that is now a thing of the past; every bowler goes straight into the main draw and there is no seeding, it’s a completely random draw!
Broadbeach Bowls Club will be the home of the 2018 Commonwealth Games. It is the home of the Australian Open finals, it is where plenty of other exciting events like the Mega Bowl and the Live Panel discussions take place, there is a trade stand full of Australian Open merchandise and of course Broadbeach is central to all 15 bowling clubs hosting the Australian Open. Broadbeach is a popular spot for tourists to stay because of the great restaurants and cafés, the close proximity to the Pacific Fair Shopping Centre and Sky City Hotel and Casino, it’s a short stroll along the beach to Surfers Paradise, and the tram through Broadbeach will take you as far north as Southport, straight past the Southport Bowls Club. So now we have convinced you, visit www.australianopen.bowlsaustralia.com .au to enter and don’t forget entries will close on April 14.
So will you be joining us for the 2017 Australian Open; we hope so, but to help get you over the line here are a few more reasons why you shouldn’t miss this world class event!
Doncaster picks up two Saturday Pennant lawn bowls premierships The dream has become reality for Doncaster Bowling Club with a stunning Saturday pennant finals result. Last weekend, the club’s No.1 and No.4 sides charged into the winners’ circle with a vengeance. Both sides emerged from the weekend with a sectional pennant flag – a combined result that sparked enthusiastic club celebrations. The No.1 side, which had been striving for the past four years to win a final and return to second division, realised that dream last Saturday by achieving promotion from third division. Doncaster No.1, which finished third after the home-and-away season, broke through by defeating second-placed Richmond Union No.2 by 10 shots at Richmond. The win booked a sectional pennant flag final against home-and-away ladder leader and hot favourite Epping RSL last Sunday at the historic Alphington Bowling Club.
Doncaster came away with a 12-shot win and the sectional pennant flag – the first time its No.1 side had won it since the 1990s. The No.4 side, which overcame an almost insurmountable statistical task to creep into the top four, swamped top side Alphington (away) by 23 shots last Saturday to reach the sectional final against Whittlesea at Rosanna the next day. Doncaster No.4 completed the club’s golden weekend by trouncing Whittlesea by 39 shots to seal the sectional pennant win. Doncaster’s No.6 side also made the finals, but lost to Glen Waverley. Doncaster bowls section president Brian Morris said the Saturday results, combined with three sides from the club’s midweek pennant section making the finals, was a credit to players and all supporters.

Flemington & Kensington Bowling Club Not much more than a decade ago, Flemington & Kensington Bowling Club had little income and precious few new bowlers coming through the ranks. Its position was precarious, although sadly familiar to many bowling clubs. But thanks to a bit of lateral thinking, hard work of a succession of committee members and the determination of club members, things are on the up for “Flem-Ken”, which this year celebrates its 125th birthday. As well as tried-and-tested methods of attracting new faces to the club and broadening the income base, such as opening for barefoot bowls and holding a tournament for novice bowlers, Flem-Ken thought outside the box. “The area is gentrifying quickly,” says Flem-Ken vice-president Mark Russell. “We realised that these potential new customers and bowlers were big consumers of craft beer, so we introduced some interesting beers to our fridges. “It has been a great success, and today we have more than 20 craft beers in the fridges, mostly from Victoria. We are now a bit of a destination for craft beers aficionados!” Last year, the club backed its slant on craft beer by installing a 12-tap draught system, with nine taps devoted to independent cider and beer makers. Regular “meet the brewers” sessions and events for Good Beer Week each May have helped attract new customers - and potential new bowlers. “As most clubs would know, translating barefoot bowlers into pennant bowlers is no easy task, but many of our newer bowlers have been people who’ve come down to the club because of craft beer or to hear the DJ on Friday nights over summer,” Russell says.
“As well, we host the Melbourne Blues Appreciation Society for its jam sessions each Tuesday night, which is precious income for us particularly during the quieter winter months.” As well as success in the clubhouse, Flem-Ken is also doing good things on the greens, where new bowlers mean it has fielded three full sides for the first time in years. “We’ve got sides in divisions 2, 4 and 7, and all made the finals this year, which we were incredibly proud about, especially considering our third side has a significant number of bowlers who are very new to our sport,” he says. “The City of Melbourne has been a great supporter of ours, and installed a synthetic green and lights over the past few years, which has been an enormous benefit. We have repaid this to the local community by remaining an inclusive, welcoming and family-friendly club. Community groups can still use our facilities for free for meetings and fundraisers.” But with all the changes, Flem-Ken remains conscious of its primary role, Russell says. “First and foremost we are a bowling club. That’s why we exist. We can’t lose sight of the fact that part of our charm is the 1970s decor and the quirks of the place. That’s why we love it, and why people enjoy coming here.”
VENUE MANAGER WANTED Flemington & Kensington Bowling Club is looking for a Venue Manager to oversee the operations of the venue and build on the Club’s strong growth. The Club has a strong connection to the local community, and maintaining the balance between growing the barefoot bowls and functions businesses while keeping our primary role as a bowling club will be a key part of the job of the Venue Manager. The Club has a synthetic green and lights. Its two large function rooms are popular for a variety of functions throughout the year. Appealing to the local community's demographics, the Club is swiftly becoming known as a place to drink great craft beer, and lays claim to being the Club with the best beer list in the Southern Hemisphere. Flem-Ken has three Saturday pennant sides, in Divisions 2, 4 and 7. As well, it is a popular venue for barefoot bowlers and hosts the Melbourne Blues Appreciation Society’s jam sessions weekly. The Venue Manager’s responsibilities will include: • Managing all inquiries and bookings. • Working with the social media team to promote upcoming events well in advance. • Managing the existing bar manager. • Developing ideas and strategies for improving income. • Making sure the Club is run efficiently. • Ensuring the primary purpose of the Club remains to be a bowling club. • Driving sponsorship and dealing with existing sponsors. • Managing casual barefoot bowlers. • Implementing a schedule of charges for functions. • Running a twice-yearly Community Cup for novice bowlers. • Some bar work. • Assisting the Bowls Secretary and Club Coach if and when necessary. Flemington & Kensington Bowling Club is located near Flemington Racecourse and easily accessible by car, train and tram. If you are interested in the position of Venue Manager, please send a CV and covering letter to the Vice-President, Mark Russell: markr@propertyid.com.au. If you have any queries please call Mark on 0418 395 757.

The Rosanna Bowling Club was formed on the 26th May, 1960, and as a result secured a 40 year lease, in 1961, over 4 blocks of land with a frontage totalling 200 feet.. In the same year 100 men and 60 ladies were signed as foundation members. In 1962 twelve rinks on a new green were opened by the Vice President of the then RVBA, and the first building was completed for the Club. 1963 saw the first pennant match being played. Over the ensuing years many improvements were made to the Club in the form of the gaining of a liquor licence, a new two story clubhouse incorporating entertainment facilities, installation of an automatic watering system, extension of the green to incorporate sixteen rinks and the installation of a 50,000 litre water tank, to name some. Today the Club has 200 members and field’s five sides in Saturday pennant, three in Tuesday pennant and one Night pennant side and it has a healthy social activities program providing for a variety of functions throughout the year.
The Club maintains two tiftdwarf grass greens with eight rinks on each green. The Clubhouse consists of two levels, a ground floor level with bar facilities and seating for approximately 100 people and a upstairs level with bar facilities and seating for approximately 150 people. This area also has a large commercial kitchen. The Club also has a very large outdoor barbeque and entertaining area. 3-11 Strasbourg Rd, Rosanna VIC 3084 03) 9459 7733

What can you tell us about hearing loss?
What does Optimal Hearing Offer?
Did you know that 1 in 6 people in Australia are affected by hearing loss? Statistics suggest that this could increase to 1 in 4 by 2050. This is due to an ageing population and lifestyle factors such as exposure to loud noise, drugs, illness etc. More than half the population aged over 60 has some form of hearing loss.
We offer the advantage of a mobile service for those that want the convenience and better hearing outcome afforded by a home visit.
Hearing Aids: In the last twenty years, the technology has advanced considerably. Gone are the days when one only had the choice of bulky, beige, behind-the ear device that did little more than magnify the sounds. Hearing aids today, come in a massive range of different options. These include completely invisible hearing aids made from Titanium to lightweight, super comfortable open-ear devices. Most hearing aids are now wireless, and communicate with your phone, TV, tablet or computer for exceptional quality streaming of music, movies or telephone conversations. The very latest hearing aids are both completely automatic and rechargeable, meaning you never have to change a battery or worry about which setting your hearing aid should be on. Hearing aids today need not be viewed as interference or a burden, but rather as a lifestyle accessory.
We offer honest and competitive prices, and try to always match the technology recommended with the needs of our patients. We are accredited with the Government to provide free or subsidised services and hearing aids to eligible pensioners and veterans. We have a range of demo devices which enable you to try a hearing aid before you commit to buy. We run an ear wax removal service in the comfort of your own home, using some of the most up to date procedures available. We currently service a number of nursing homes in the Bayside area. We are looking to expand our services to this population. We tend to visit each facility around once every fortnight, so residents are not waiting months for their care. We run regular training seminars with staff members at these facilities on hearing aid management and troubleshooting. Embracing Change, Supporting Mum Amanda Little is facing one of the busiest times of her life. She runs a consulting business, looks after her daughter and helps Nancy, her mother, who at 85 lives with vision loss. “Mum has had macular degeneration for many years and she has managed very well living in her own home,” said Amanda. “In the last six months though her vision has deteriorated to the point where she is now legally blind.”

Despite this Nancy is determined to live independently for as long as possible and tries not to call on too much help. “Amanda calls me every day and visits once a week to help me will bills and paperwork, and with chauffeuring. I have help with weekly house-cleaning and grocery shopping and I know Amanda is always there if I get stuck. I also find people are very helpful when I’m out and about. I wear my “low vision” badge and this lets people know why I’m asking for assistance,” said Nancy. With a strong genetic history of macular degeneration, Amanda is aware that she has a 50% risk of developing the disease. “While I’m not going to sit around worrying about the future, I do take precautions. I have annual health checks and make sure this includes an eye test and macula check. I have a very healthy diet and am aware of the importance of maintaining a good lifestyle,” said Amanda. B-24 Liberator Memorial Australia Inc. This group of 25 to 30 volunteers work in a WW2 hangar on the remains of Werribee Airfield where young pilots were taught to fly in Tiger Moths, Avro Ansons, Airspeed Oxfords, etc, during the war before going to Tocumwal to learn to fly the B-24 Liberator bomber. This Liberator, A72-176, was a training aircraft, and as such did not serve overseas. The restoration started in 1988 when a group of Lib veterans met and decided it was important to Australia’s wartime heritage to show future generations some of the conditions under which our young men went to war. The work actually started when a hub cap off one of the wheels was found. This was followed by wings from a USA Liberator forced down in the Ramu Valley (PNG) and then the fuselage of A72-176 was bought from George Toye in Moe. He purchased A72-176 after the end of WW2 from the RAAF at Sale as scrap. The workforce set up the restoration in the hangar thanks to Melbourne Water who gave us generous rental conditions and support then and now.
B-24 Liberator Memorial Australia Inc. The only WW2 B-24 Liberator bomber left in the Southern Hemisphere: the ongoing restoration is located corner of Farm Rd and Princes Highway Werribee Victoria. Individuals and groups are welcome to visit Tuesdays, Thursdays, Sundays 9-30 to 3.30, cost $5 per head. The work, all done by volunteers, is taking place in a WW2 hangar standing on a WW2 airstrip, Werribee Field. It’s a “hands on” experience allowing access to the plane and conversations with the restorers. Contact the Secretary, Judy Gilbert, on 0410198949 to make a booking.
The work has steadily proceeded and we now have a recognisable aircraft with many artefacts as ground working models. Visitors can expect to see operating a mid upper turret, a Norden Bombsight, wirelesses and bomb bay doors. On display we have the cockpit instrumentation, the ongoing work such as hydraulics, engine nacelles and work on the wing. It is “hands on” so visitors can go into the bomb bay with a tour guide, can speak to the restorers and look through museum displays. The Liberator has 4 Pratt & Whitney 14 cylinder turbo charged, radial engines. The organisation has 5 of these engines and they are regularly rotated on a test rig so that they can be serviced and visitors can get to hear a radial at work. We have plenty of parking for bus groups and can provide morning/afternoon tea or a BBQ meal at an extra cost. Our aim is to preserve our military history, to be a resource for scholars and family history researchers, etc and to provide a “living” experience to our visitors.

HEARING HEALTH Permanent hearing damage can occur suddenly at any age due to noise exposure, head injury or virus. Hearing loss is also associated with general health issues eg. cardiovascular disorders, dementia, risk of falling, cancer treatments and diabetes. Hearing also declines slowly as we age. You may be suffering from a hearing loss if you: Often ask people to repeat what they have just said Have difficulty understanding conversations in noisy situations Have troubles hearing on the phone Experience ringing in your ears Need the TV or radio turned up louder than your family Read lips to determine what people are saying. If you recognise any of the above signs, your hearing may be affected. The next step is to arrange an appointment with a qualified audiologist who can conduct a comprehensive hearing test to determine the extent. A referral to an Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist may be warranted to determine the cause of the hearing loss. Hearing aids may be recommended to improve your quality of life and restore your enjoyment of social activities and hobbies.
Hearing technology can be very confusing as there are so many options and one size definitely does not fit all. Victorian Hearing is an independent, locally owned and run, audiology practice that prides itself on personalized service and quality hearing solutions. Spectacular Bellarine Peninsula Known for its family-friendly beaches, surf spots and stunning coastal scenery, Victoria's Bellarine Peninsula has long been a popular holiday destination. But in recent years, the spotlight has shifted from its natural beauty to its innovative restaurants and wineries, which are now an attraction in their own right. Head along for a taste of what's on offer – it's a trip worth savouring. Tourism on the Bellarine kicked off in the 1870s, when people travelled from Melbourne to Queenscliff by paddle steamer. These days, Queenscliff is known for its historic streetscapes and heritage-listed buildings, the paddle steamers have long gone and the Bellarine is best explored by car. It's about a 90-minute drive from Melbourne, so it's an easy day trip, but its relaxed pace is better enjoyed on a weekend-long stay. It's also an easy add-on to a trip along the Great Ocean Road, which starts (or finishes, depending on which direction you're coming from) in Torquay. Brunch and more in Barwon Heads Just a stone's throw from Torquay, Barwon Heads is a blink-and-you'll miss-it kind of place. Here's some advice: don't. Instead, do as the locals do, browse the chic boutiques that line the single main street and when you see a free table at some chic restaurant. Make sure you stay and enjoy the experience. During summer, Barwon is packed with holidaymakers who stay at the beachside caravan parks and some great affordable, accommodation places hotels and motels , in winter, it's just locals and holiday makers, enjoying the wide, windswept views or watch the surfers at nearby 13th Beach, but only enter the water if you're a good swimmer – the currents here are strong.
Go organic in Ocean Grove Two bridges sit side-by-side across the Barwon River; reflective of the lifestyle here, one's for pedestrians and fishing, the other's for cars, and both connect Barwon Heads with Ocean Grove. As you enter the hilly town, glimpses of the horseshoe-shaped beach tell you why the laid-back 'Ocean Grove', as the locals call it, is popular with families.
Weekend getaways: Geelong and the Moorabool Valley Geelong has a secret drawcard – the wine, produce and glorious undulating landscapes of the Moorabool Valley, an hour from Melbourne. THE SOLUTION TO YOUR ACHES AND PAINS Platelet Rich Plasma Treatment Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a treatment for muscular and skeletal injuries. It is a simple procedure in which a nurse will take your blood (like a normal blood test), which is then spun in a centrifuge – a machine that separates the blood into its various components. The bottom layer contains most of the red blood cells, while the top layer is mostly plasma and platelets. This top layer is the platelet rich plasma (PRP). The top layer is taken out, and the rest is discarded. The PRP is then activated under a light, which has been shown to reduce an aggravation of pain after the procedure. This whole process takes about 30-45 minutes. The skin over the injury is washed, and then the PRP is injected directly into the area. The doctor may also inject some local anaesthetic in the region to make you more comfortable. The recommended treatment sessions include 4 injections. Initially we recommend 3 injections 1-2 weeks apart, 1 month off from treatment, and then a 4th injection. Most patients notice improvement after 2-6 weeks. Maintenance treatment includes a yearly top-up injection. Platelet rich plasma (PRP) and stem cells offer unprecedented hope for the many elderly Australians suffering joint pain due to osteoarthritis and degeneration of the tendons. At Malvern Health and Fitness, our allied health care team is here to help you with your joint care challenges. PRP and stem cell therapy alongside exercise, physiotherapy, diet and nutrition is a rounded approach to rehabilitation and fitness. The services offered at the clinic include regenerative medicine doctors, a geriatrician, psychologist, exercise physiologists and personal trainers. Along with the rest of the Surecell medical team, a group of highly experienced PRP and stem cell practitioners, we have helped thousands of people overcome the loss of function from musculoskeletal injuries and osteoarthritis. Many of our patients suffer from preventable health conditions associated with poor diet and exercise – type 2 diabetes, obesity and osteoarthritis. The engagement of an exercise physiologist and geriatrician alongside Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) treatment may be the solution to your health problems. Our multidisciplinary team has adopted this approach to injury management, well-being, rehabilitation and fitness. We work together with the patient through dietary changes, exercise advice, pain management and joint regeneration through PRP or adipose derived mesenchymal stem cell therapy (ASCT) to achieve the best outcomes for each individual. 28
DR PETER LEWIS MBBS, FAARM, Dip Sports Med, Medical Director at MHF Dr Peter Lewis is an expert in the field of regenerative medicine and was the first practicing Australian clinician to be awarded a fellowship by the American Academy and Board of Regenerative Medicine. Dr Lewis has had extensive experience, working, lecturing and teaching in the fields of PRP and stem cell therapy in Australia and overseas. He was one of the first clinicians in Australia to offer PRP and is now a world leader in the field.
A Holistic Approach It’s important to look at all aspects of health to maximise the benefit of PRP treatment and to minimize the negative impact we have on our bodies as we age. Due to the characteristic link between osteoarthritis, diabetes, musculoskeletal injuries and weight, we also provide diet and lifestyle advice to help you find the most efficient and effective way to manage your weight and maintain an active lifestyle.
PRP and Stem Cell Therapy PRP utilizes the body’s natural ability to heal and accelerate restoration of your joints. As we age, our body’s ability to repair itself may diminish, injuries may take longer to heal and osteoarthritis may become more prevalent. PRP is an ‘autologous blood derivative’ - the growth factors and platelets found in the plasma component of your own blood are extracted and utilized to promote cell multiplication and the formation of new tissues. Cortisone injections are commonly used to treat similar injuries. Though their effects are rapid, they are often followed by a decline in the condition. In comparison, PRP shows a gradual improvement both in pain alleviation and joint repair. PRP is the current treatment of choice for grade II and III osteoarthritis of the knee, and can be useful in the treatment of: • Osteoarthritis • Muscle tears • Ligament and tendon damage • Bursitis • Cosmetic (hair and face) • Gynaecological conditions • Erectile dysfunction For advanced-stage arthritis and injury, Adipose-Derived Stem Cell Therapy may also be advised. Our use of Mesenchymal Stem Cells, which we harvest from abdominal fat, is a minimally invasive and safe procedure. Stem cells are more potent than PRP and are effective in the treatment of severe conditions, as well as to produce long-lasting benefits to the patient. After the stem cells are harvested from abdominal fat, they are mixed with PRP, and injected into the affected area, where they are able to promote growth and regeneration by release of growth factors. This stimulates cell multiplication and promotes the formation of new tissue. The Surecell team are the most experienced PRP doctors in Australia. Having helped thousands of people overcome pain and loss of function due to musculoskeletal injuries and osteoarthritis, the demand for treatment is only continuing to increase. Now readily available in various clinics Australia-wide for your convenience, PRP or stem cells could be the treatment for you.
Complementing PRP or stem cell treatment with assessment by one of our resident exercise physiologists or our geriatrician can further improve both the quality and permanency of the benefit you experience from seeing us. Starting in mid-February, we will be conducting a new fitness class aimed to help older adults improve their strength, fitness, mobility, balance and coordination. These classes will be fully supervised by exercise physiologist Steve Moar and will be conducted upstairs at Malvern Health and Fitness.
Exercise Physiology As a result of musculoskeletal injury, it is likely that the affected region of the body will have experienced loss of muscle mass and stability around the joints. Exercise rehabilitation reconditions these areas to help resolve any residual side-effects. Seeing an Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) allows for a whole-body assessment including postural and gait analysis, movement patterning and functionality testing, and is covered under WorkCover, TAC, private health insurance, and care plans under referral by a GP. The right exercise program has been shown to reduce the amount of fatal heart attacks by up to 50%, improve breathing for those with lung disease by 70%, reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes by almost 60%, help combat depression and the effects of medication, improve recovery rate after surgery, reduce the pain and increase movement of those with osteoarthritis, and help manage chronic pain.
Diet The Modern Diet Unlike previous generations, we are witnessing a self-imposed modern health crisis. Particularly prevalent in developed countries like our own is what experts refer to as an “obesogenic niche” – an environment full of temptation to consume foods high in calories, sugar and starch leading to obesity, diabetes, and osteoarthritis. Reports released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics reveal 74.9 % of 65-74-year-old Australians are overweight. 12% of this group have diabetes and 33% have osteoarthritis. Obese people are 25% more likely to experience depression, anxiety or low self-esteem. The impact of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, osteoarthritis and depressed hormone levels and the inherent link between this deterioration in health lead to increased health care demands.
The Paleo Diet Recent research (Otten, J. et al., 2016) indicates that a paleo diet based on consuming lean meat, fish, seafood, eggs, vegetables, fruits, berries and nuts while limiting the intake of cereals, dairy products, legumes, refined sugars and salt can help to reduce fat mass and improve metabolic balance in people with type 2 diabetes. This means improving insulin sensitivity, glycaemic control and leptin levels. Adding exercise to these positive dietary changes further improves outcomes! 29

Simply Helping is well placed to provide support choices to you. 2017 is going to be a very interesting year for the provision of in-home home care services under the new aged care reforms introduced in February. Like with many Government initiatives, explanations and information issued is laced with esoteric jargon and verbosity and sometimes you need to be akin to Einstein to interpret. Simply put - the changes mean that individuals with a home care package can now choose who they want to manage their allocated funds, and choose who they want to actually provide the care and support service within their home. It is now up to you. What is also unsettling, is the apparent failure of some existing approved providers to explain to their existing clients of their rights under this reform. In other words, that you now have a choice, so don't be reticent to ask questions and to become informed. Simply Helping has been providing flexible personalised services, available from ½ hour services to 24 hours, 7 days a week, throughout Victoria for over 19 years. In keeping with our commitment to quality and professionalism, staff are chosen for their experience, qualifications and personality to represent Simply Helping. Furthermore, all are fully insured, reference and police checked. In addition, Simply Helping has achieved Health and Disability Services Certification having met those Standards.

Dr Troski answers some common questions about
CATARACT SURGERY
1. Should I have my cataract removed early or late
4. What is Laser Cataract Surgery
Back in the days when my father was doing cataract operations (at the Eye and Ear Hospital) the safest approach was to wait until the cataract had become advanced (“was ripe”)
In the last few years there has been a laser that can be used to perform some of the initial steps of the cataract operation. There was a lot of interest from eye surgeons who hoped this would improve the outcomes for patients but unfortunately this has not happened. There has now been time for this procedure to have shown a benefit for patients but there is no evidence that this does produce better results. In fact the largest study on this procedure involving thousands of patients which was organised by the ESCRS (European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons) and included some of the top European surgeons has in fact shown that the chance of a surgical complication was higher and the visual results were worse in patients having the laser cataract procedure.
Modern Cataract Surgery is performed using “Phacoemulsification” In this operation the cataract is liquefied and the more advanced the cataract the more energy is required to liquefy the cataract and the greater the potential for danger to the inside of the eye. For this reason – The earlier the cataract is removed the better.
2. Will I need glasses after cataract surgery? Using the latest intraocular lenses it is usually possible to be able to see well for distance, at least well enough to drive safely, without glasses. 2.1 Astigmatism. Dr Troski was one of the first surgeons in Australia to routinely implant lenses to treat astigmatism (Toric lenses) Up to 60% of patients have Astigmatism which essentially means that their eye is shaped more like an egg than like an orange.
In Australia only a small number of eye surgeons have adopted this technique and patients who have Laser Cataract surgery must pay an additional fee for the initial laser component of the cataract operation as well as paying for the removal of the cataract which is always performed using the phacoemulsification procedure.
Dr Troski was also the first surgeon in the Southern Hemisphere to use the real time computer guidance in the operating theatre to align the intraocular lens exactly in the position of the patient’s astigmatism. By using the latest methods of measuring the shape of the eye and using intra-operative real-time computer guidance of astigmatism correcting (Toric) intra-ocular lenses. Dr Troski is able to get the best possible visual results so that it is usually it is possible for patients to see well enough to drive without glasses. 2.2 Reading Glasses Some patients prefer to be able to see at both distance and near without glasses. It is often possible to achieve this result for most patients for most visual tasks. Although usualy it is necessary to still wear glasses some of the time.
3. Can I have both eyes operated on the same day? Dr Troski is a member of the ISBCS (International Society Bilateral Cataract Surgery) and has been performing bilateral cataract surgery on selected patients for a number of years. Although most patients prefer to have each cataract operation on separate days. It is possible to have both eyes operated on in the same day in most cases. Dr Troski will be able to tell you whether you are suitable for this approach.

He has the latest diagnostic equipment combined with state of the art computer guidance in the operating theatre so that after surgery patients have the best possible vision without the need for glasses.

Where home help makes a difference For many older people, home is where the heart is and living the best life may simply mean living at home for as long as possible. And with the right support, this is possible, said Kitty Smutny who has been a full-time carer for her husband for the past four years. “For as long as I can cope, I want to ensure Rudy is able to remain living at home. I know this would not have been possible without the additional supports that I receive at home,” said Kitty. Rudy, who has severe dementia, requires constant supervision and assistance with his everyday living including personal care, dressing, eating, and general wellbeing. Despite the challenges caring for someone living with dementia, Kitty has never considered moving Rudy into residential care. “Southern Cross Care has been providing us with home support for the past four years. Through Rudy’s Home Care Package, a support worker comes three times a week to help him shower and dress. We are also getting support with home cleaning and maintenance, as well as respite care to provide me with a break when needed. I would not have been able to manage all these on my own,” she said.
Taking a Lifestyle Medicine approach to Cancer T
The Gawler Cancer Foundation Lifestyle medicine is a relatively new term that refers to the use of evidence-based lifestyle measures to treat chronic illness and lifestyle-related diseases. These lifestyle measures are things that people can do for themselves, in conjunction with clinical practices, to support their treatment and ongoing wellbeing. They include things like adopting a healthy diet, rest, relaxation and meditation, time to exercise, maintaining supportive relationships and connecting with meaning and purpose in life. Pharmaco-medical treatments for chronic, lifestyle-related illnesses, while playing an important role, should no longer be considered a complete solution to the problem. Lifestyle medicine is a key component of a truly integrative approach to healthcare, especially in cases of chronic disease such as cancer.
“Rudy enjoys living at home with me, and I enjoy caring for him full-time. However, it can be very tiring and stressful at times. That’s why it’s wonderful to have someone to come in regularly each week to give me a hand. “John, our support worker from Southern Cross Care is fantastic and gets along so well with Rudy. With carers to help me, I am able to spend some quality time with Rudy without having to worry about his care all the time. This is very important to me,” she said. Southern Cross Care (Vic) supports more than 2900 older people in the community, and is currently the largest provider of Home Care Packages in Victoria. To find out more, please call 1300 4 SUPPORT (1300 478 776) or email homesupport@sccv.org.au

“Lifestyle medicine differs from conventional medicine in that it is aimed at modifying the behavioural and lifestyle bases of disease, rather than simply treating the disease. As such, it requires the ‘patient’ to be an active partner in the process, rather than a passive recipient of medical care.” 1 The Gawler Cancer Foundation provides lifestyle medicine based retreats to support and educate people living with cancer and chronic illness in making this significant shift in mindset and knowing how to step into the drivers seat. “We’ve been helping people reach a new level of wellbeing for over 30 years. We’ve seen hope restored and lives transformed” said Wayne Nicholls, the Foundation’s Chief Executive. The Gawler Cancer Foundation offers a team of medical and non-medical practitioners, teachers, counsellors and facilitators who are professionally and personally committed to the Lifestyle Medicine approach. Seniors financial wellness can be secured says Homesafe MD Peter Szabo Unfortunately too many seniors are being denied a dignified, stress free and financially secure life in retirement – far too many seniors continue to suffer unnecessary financial, emotional and often health related hardship said Homesafe Solutions Managing Director, Peter Szabo.
With rising health costs, rapidly depleting nest eggs and income sources failing to keep pace with inflation, it is now commonplace to see seniors defer medical and dental procedures that would alleviate pain and improve quality of life.
The solution may well be the elephant in the room – the untapped equity in the family home.
In addition, undertaking maintenance, major repairs to the home or alterations that would improve mobility and reduce risk of falls and injury are also often deferred.
“Accessing the equity in the family home continues to be misunderstood by seniors, adviser intermediaries and government”, said Peter Szabo. “Any solution needs to ensure that peace of mind and the right to live in the family home until death is sacrosant.” These were the very principles on which Homesafe was developed over a decade ago. Peter Szabo continued, “As the result of deep emotional attachment to the family home and desire to leave a legacy for the kids, seniors and advisers deliberately omit the family home from the advice process. “Unfortunately many seniors endure unnecessary hardship whilst residing in very valuable residential homes with untapped equity”.
A decision to downsize to free up funds needs to be examined very carefully from both a financial and emotional perspective. The emotional cost may outweigh the financial benefit. “Homesafe’s equity release offering was developed to allow seniors to live in the comfort of their home by providing seniors the ability to sell a share of the future sale proceeds of their home for an immediate cash sum”, said Peter Szabo. “These funds can then be used for any purpose such as paying off or just meeting every day needs”. Peter Szabo concluded by saying “Seniors need to be aware that the wealth they have built up in their homes can be accessed to improve their lives”.

Trust your gut,
but rethink removing dairy from your diet
An increasing number of Australians report experiencing digestive problems such as bloating, abdominal pain and diarrhoea. While these may be caused by any number of factors such as stress, medication, inadequate exercise and food intolerances, many believe dairy foods are the culprit, leading them to cut out or limit dairy from their diets without consulting a health professional.
The intervention involves starting with half a cup of milk with a meal twice a day in week one, stepping this up to two-thirds of a cup in week two and then one cup during week three.
Get balance back in your life - do dairy differently If you are limiting your intake of dairy foods because you feel it may be causing you digestive discomfort, try spreading your intake of dairy over the day, having dairy foods with meals or having smaller amounts of dairy at a time, gradually building up your tolerance.
Limiting or excluding dairy foods from your daily diet may have a negative effect on your health. Consuming adequate amounts of milk, cheese and yoghurt can protect us against a number of diseases such as heart disease and stroke and can reduce the risk of hypertension and some cancers. These foods also provide us with valuable nutrients such as calcium for healthy bones and teeth, protein for maintaining lean muscle and iodine for optimal brain function.
What about lactose intolerance? Even those diagnosed with lactose intolerance can still enjoy the health benefits of dairy foods. The Australian Dietary Guidelines suggest that up to 250ml of milk may be well tolerated if broken up throughout the day and consumed with other foods. Hard cheeses contain virtually no lactose and yoghurt contains good bacteria, which helps to digest lactose. Lactose-free milks are also a great alternative as they contain similar nutrients to regular milk.
The good news is that people with digestive problems, including lactose intolerance, do not need to cut out dairy foods. In fact, researchers have shown that by including dairy foods as part of their diet, many people are able to increase their tolerance.

If you have cut out dairy foods completely from your diet due to digestive problems, try a 21-day milk-drinking intervention to build up your tolerance. Add grated/chopped zucchini and cook for a further 5-10 minutes or until zucchini is soft. Season well with salt and pepper. 3. The Penguin and the Fisherman - Best Buds! Today’s most heartwarming story is brought to you from a beach in Brazil. It’s the story of a South American Magellanic penguin who swims 5,000 miles each year to be reunited with the man who saved his life. Retired bricklayer and part time fisherman Joao Perei de Souza, 71, who lives in an island village just outside Rio de Janeiro , Brazil , found the tiny penguin, covered in oil and close to death, lying on rocks on his local beach in 2011. Joao cleaned the oil off the penguin’s feathers and fed him a daily diet of fish to build his strength. He named him Dindim. The prodigal penguin returns (Picture: TV Globo) After a week, he tried to release the penguin back into the sea. But, the bird wouldn’t leave. ‘He stayed with me for 11 months and then, just after he changed his coat with new feathers, he disappeared,’ Joao recalls. And, just a few months later, Dindim was back. He spotted the fisherman on the beach one day and followed him home. Look who’s back (Picture: TV Globo) For the past five years, Dindim has spent eight months of the year with Joao and is believed to spend the rest of the time breeding off the coast of Argentina and Chile . It’s thought he swims up to 5,000 miles each year to be reunited with the man who saved his life.
(Picture: Rio de Janeiro Federal University ) ‘I love the penguin like it’s my own child and I believe the penguin loves me,’ Joao told Globo TV. ‘No one else is allowed to touch him. He pecks them if they do. He lays on my lap, lets me give him showers, allows me to feed him sardines and to pick him up. It’s thought Dindim believes the fisherman is also a penguin (Picture: TV Globo) ‘Everyone said he wouldn’t return but he has been coming back to visit me for the past four years. He arrives in June and leaves to go home in February and every year he becomes more affectionate as he appears even happier to see (Picture: Rio de Janeiro Federal University ) Biologist Professor Krajewski, who interviewed the fisherman for Globo TV, told The Independent: ‘I have never seen anything like this before. I think the penguin believes Joao is part of his family and probably a penguin as well. ‘When he sees him he wags his tail like a dog and honks with delight. And, just like that, the world seems a kinder place again.
