THE BOWLING GREEN AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE works with the City, County and economic development agencies to promote the region to new and expanding businesses and industries. In 2015, Bowling Green touted three of the top 10 economic development projects in the state and was selected as one of best places in the country to retire.

ACCESS TO MARKETS While South Central Kentucky’s driving sectors are advanced manufacturing, automotive, distribution and logistics, food processing, metal fabrication, motorsports and plastics, the region encompasses a range of industries from high-tech research and development facilities to finance and healthcare.

AVAILABLE PROPERTIES The Kentucky Transpark provides Build-Ready sites, where the majority of background work is completed, meaning companies have the freedom to begin construction in a short time frame. Electric, water, sewer and gas are already routed to the property lines, with fiber optic available. The Transpark is expected to have a total economic impact of $3.5 billion over the next 10 years.

EDUCATION More than 50 colleges and universities are in a 60-mile radius of South Central Kentucky. In fact, Bowling Green is home to Western Kentucky University, Southcentral Kentucky Community & Technical College and Daymar College – all fulfill employers’ needs with hightech training, state-of-the-art facilities and research that drive expansion and growth. Bowling Green is proud to implement the nationally-recognized Leader in Me program, a leadership model that teaches students the soft skills needed to succeed beyond the classroom. Our community is on track to be the first in the nation to implement the program in all grade levels.

EXPANDING COMMUNITY As the fastest growing region in the state, we have had a growth rate of 22 percent over the last nine years. Bowling Green is the state's third-largest city, with 63,616 residents. The 10-county region has a population of more than 295,952, with an average age of 37 years old.

QUALITY OF LIFE With the cost of living well below national average, South Central Kentucky provides an affordable, high quality of life. The Bowling Green MSA reported a Composite Index 10 percent lower than the national average, according to the Council for Community and Economic Research, and housing costs rank 21 percent below the national average. In 2015, the average median home value reported was $134,500, and the average monthly rent was $665.

LOW CRIME Safety is important when choosing where to locate your business or family, and South Central Kentucky boasts crime rates below the national average. The Bowling Green Police Department, Warren County Sheriff’s Office and Kentucky State Police serve the region.

TRANSPORTATION ACCESS With close proximity to major highways and four-lane state parkways, it’s possible to reach 60 percent of the U.S. market in a day. Kentucky puts products, paper and packages into the global commerce stream through two major shipping hubs: UPS and DHL Express. The region provides rail service through the R.J. Corman Railroad Group and the CSX mainline, which connects Louisville and Nashville. Nestled on the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, Kentucky provides freight transport, and the Port of Nashville and the Owensboro Riverport are less than 80 miles from Bowling Green.

Formed in 1938 to bring electricity to rural areas of Warren County, Warren Rural Electric Cooperative Corporation staff members work closely with economic development leaders in Barren, Butler, Edmonson, Grayson, Logan, Ohio, Simpson and Warren counties. As part of the Touchstone Energy alliance, Warren RECC is dedicated to innovation, accountability, integrity and community commitment. The alliance of over 740 cooperatives in 46 states was created to educate member-owners and to provide a nationwide network to bring added value and benefit to customers. Warren RECC also works in partnership with the Tennessee Valley Authority to offer financial and rate incentives to qualified industrial and commercial customers to assist with infrastructure costs and lower overall operating costs. BEVIN SIGNS BILL TO INCENTIVIZE TECH INVESTMENTS

o attract more tech investments to the state, Gov. Matt Bevin signed a bill to add data centers to the definition of manufacturing.

House Bill 237, sponsored by Warren County Rep. Jim DeCesare, adds tier 3 and tier 4 tech centers, which includes large tech companies

like Apple, Google and Amazon in the definition of manufacturing. The bill allows for data centers to qualify for temporary exemption from local property taxes. Along with the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s low-cost energy and other incentives, House Bill 237 further positions Kentucky to compete against other states for future investments.

Encourages small business growth and job creation by providing a tax credit to businesses hiring one or more eligible individuals and investing at least $5,000 in qualifying equipment or technology. Most for-profit businesses with 50 or fewer full-time employees are eligible for this program.

Kentucky Business Investment Program Provides income tax credits and wage assessments to agribusinesses, regional and national headquarters, manufacturing companies and non-retail service or technology-related companies that locate or expand in Kentucky. Projects locating in certain counties may qualify for enhanced incentives.

Kentucky Enterprise Initiative Act For new or expanded service, technology, manufacturing or tourism attraction projects in Kentucky. KEIA provides a refund of Kentucky sales and use taxes paid by approved companies for building and construction materials permanently incorporated as an improvement to real property. For 35 years, the Bowling Green Assembly Plant has provided jobs to thousands of Kentuckians and to hundreds of suppliers and vendors.” GM began Corvette production at the Bowling Green plant in 1981, and the facility has been the exclusive home of the Corvette ever since. With more than 1.6 million produced since 1954, international recognition as America’s sports car and the official sports car of Kentucky, the Corvette is the world’s longest-running, continuously-produced passenger car. In 2015, Corvette sales reached a record-shattering 36,000.

“We are making technology investments that will continue to improve our manufacturing processes and ultimately the quality of our vehicles,” said North American Manufacturing Manager Arvin Jones. “We are putting Corvette customers first by building upon our worldclass manufacturing process.” For more than 30 years, the Assembly Plant has positively impacted the community. As a landmark along Interstate 65, the Plant and NCM drive tourism for car enthusiasts, curious tourists and proud locals alike.

In 2015, 53,738 tourists from around the world visited the plant to see American manufacturing firsthand, and the NCM attracted 221,000 tourists to Bowling Green and Warren County in that same year. In March, Trade & Industry Development magazine recognized GM as one of 15 companies in the nation to receive the magazine’s 10th annual CiCi award for Corporate Investment as a result of the $483 million investment GM made in 2015.

The initiative emphasizes the integration of STEM disciplines into traditional technical education curriculum to develop a program that prepares students to work in the growing advanced manufacturing sector. Additionally, the initiative dovetails with the Warren East Engineering Academy’s machine tool and robotics programs that prepare students for careers in advanced manufacturing.

Who are key players? OnTrack is a powerful collaboration between community, education and business partners. The Chamber, Warren County Area Technology Center, Warren County Public Schools, Bowling Green Independent Schools, Southcentral Kentucky Community & Technical College and Western Kentucky University – as well as industry-leading companies such as Holley Performance Products, General Motors and the National Corvette Museum – have teamed up to develop an initiative that supports the growth of demand-driven education in South Central Kentucky. In 2016, the Chamber began a partnership with LIFT, a Detroit-based, public-private partnership committed to the development and deployment of advanced lightweight metal manufacturing technologies and implementing education and training initiatives to prepare the workforce.

What is OnTrack’s vision? OnTrack cultivates an interdependent environment where classrooms across all curriculums are involved; academic and technical programs collaborate like never before, initializing an education revolution which transforms the way students learn.

How does the program involve students? In 2015, the Chamber purchased two Chevrolet Camaros from Holley Performance Products and donated them to SKYCTC and Warren County ATC to rebuild during the 2015-16 school year. After a full year of work, both schools competed in 2016’s Holley LS Fest at Beech Bend Raceway where the ATC was crowned the winner of the inaugural Dominator Challenge. However, students in the program are not just involved in a car rebuild; OnTrack is a comprehensive program that includes a business plan to market and sell the car once the competition is over. In designing their rebuild, students must consider not only LS Fest competition rules but also a business plan that leads to the sale of the car. Students must use leadership skills and business concepts in addition to technical skills.

How does OnTrack grow our local economy? OnTrack responds to private sector demand and seeks to expose students to an advanced manufacturing career pathway that prepares them for careers that are currently in demand in South Central Kentucky and are projected to be in high demand over the next 10 years.

Bill and Shirley Jackson bought the 105-acre farm from the Hudgens family in 1966 and have since created a go-to spot for groups, families or the local Saturday shopper. The orchard began as a tree-planting program in 1969 and now has over 7,000 apple, peach and cherry trees. In the fall, wind your way through the corn maze or peruse the orchard’s open air shop, stocked with local jams, produce, sauces and soups. While you’re there, grab a snack from the walk-up kitchen. Always on the board: caramel apples, fried peach pies, apple cider slushes.

Head south down U.S. 31-W, and you’ll be met with a giant red barn and rolling farmland. Then venture inside to try some of the best ice cream in Kentucky. The Chaney family purchased the land in 1888 and turned it into a dairy farm in 1940. In 2003, they began selling ice cream and have been greeted with much-deserved success. Chaney’s serves homemade sandwiches, soups, pies and a variety of local goods. During the summer, bring lawn chairs to “Ice Cream & A Moovie,” the farm’s outdoor, family-friendly movie series.

GROWING OUR OWN

n 2013, the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce and the business community embarked on a study to understand the workforce availability in South Central Kentucky. The result was the Urgent Call to Action report that noted by 2020, 9,000 positions would be open just in manufacturing and transportation, distribution and logistics. The study also uncovered concerns about the preparation of the available workforce, including 74 percent of those surveyed concerned about maintaining a skilled and motivated workforce. Upon further research, the Chamber noted that talent concerns spanned several sectors and were commonplace. In response, the Chamber embarked on a multi-year strategy to create a demand-driven talent initiative that spans all levels of education.

The Beginning

In 2011, the Chamber raised $1.4 million to become the first in the nation to implement The Leader in Me initiative in every school in Bowling Green and Warren County. TLIM teaches 21st-century leadership and life skills based on Stephen Covey’s “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People,” preparing the future workforce by teaching students about leadership, accountability and teamwork – all integral skills for development. The initiative recognizes that every child is capable and every child is a leader.

SCK LAUNCH

Building upon the success of TLIM in elementary schools, the Chamber began to blaze the path for powerful education and business partnerships through SCK LAUNCH: Career Immersion, a collaborative community approach that supports students in launching their careers. As we develop the model, workforce stakeholders will serve as advisors, provide opportunities for students to explore and expe-

rience careers and provide input on curricula to ensure student engagement and relevance.

In fact, in 2007 the state saw so much economic potential in downtown Bowling Green that it designated 363 acres of it as a Signature TIF under the state’s tax increment financing legislation. The district stretches from Western Kentucky University’s campus to The Medical Center at Bowling Green.

Essentially, TIF uses future gains in taxes to finance current improvements, so when a public project is carried out, the value of nearby real estate increases, driving up the value of taxable properties and activities, which ultimately increases overall tax revenues. Among other downtown developments, SKY Property Management recently broke ground on The VUE, a development that will house residential and retail space. The urban-style project features exposed brick, loft spaces, open floorplans and contemporary design elements. To further economic development in downtown Bowling Green and beyond, the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce worked with the business community to create a local interdependent strategic plan, which examines the future of Bowling Green and Warren County over the next three to five years. In order to develop the plan, the Chamber convened a Strategic Council based on six business sectors – construction, healthcare, hospitality, manufacturing, professional services and transportation, distribution and logistics – that best represent the economic landscape of our community, as well as civic and non-profit sectors. The group was charged with re-evaluating priorities and creating a roadmap to maintaining a strong economy. The plan serves as a series of interdependent recommendations, meaning the whole community will have a stake in its outcome, and different entities will be called on to implement the recommendations the community chooses to undertake. ••• In early 2016, Western Kentucky University announced plans to partner with the University of Kentucky’s College of Medicine to bring a satellite medical program to downtown Bowling Green – specifically The Medical Center at Bowling Green. This announcement is groundbreaking for WKU and the community because it means more WKU students will have the opportunity to continue their education right here in Bowling Green – ultimately strengthening our local economy.

The Bowling Green Riverfront Foundation is a non-profit that is working to create the Barren River Outdoors Center, an integrated recreational area that links Mitch McConnell Park, the Bowling Green Greenways Project and Weldon Peete Park. PERFORMING ARTS Orchestra Kentucky

Recognized for its superb playing and out-of-the-box programming, Orchestra Kentucky is quickly becoming one of the leading orchestras of the South. The orchestra presents 15 concerts each season at SKyPAC, including six Variety Series concerts, which combine classical and popular music, and six Retro Series concerts, featuring music from the ’50s through the ’80s. The orchestra has worked with world-class entertainers, including Glen Campbell, Neil Sedaka, Peter Tork, Paul Williams, Jimmy Webb, Keith Emerson and more. The Symphony at WKU

Kentucky’s longest-running orchestra has been entertaining audiences since 1908. The WKU Symphony is composed primarily of WKU students while occasionally presenting departmental faculty as soloists. o promote the region’s intricate musical landscape, the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce – with the help of other community partners – founded the Hear BG Music Committee to stimulate economic growth in South Central Kentucky through music. The committee – compiled of musicians, creatives and everyday people with a passion for music – collaborates with local businesses and musicians to develop musical events that increase the region’s economic impact, building a local music heritage that spans all genres. In 2016, Hear BG established a musical petting zoo at Concerts in the Park, a Friday night concert series at Circus Square Park headed by the Downtown Redevelopment Authority. Every Friday during the summer, children and families are able to try out different instruments by plucking guitars, tickling piano keys and more. In addition to developing musical events, Hear BG is also working to add Newgrass as a genre to the Americana Music Triangle, whose major points are Memphis, Tenn., Nashville and New Orleans and includes one-of-a-kind musical and cultural landmarks throughout. The AMT is the first-ever comprehensive collection of historical, musical and cultural attractions that define the birthplace of American music. It hosts 35 million visitors annually and will grow as the initiative continues to add stops. MUSEUMS Historic Railpark & Train Museum

This 1925 structure has been restored to house a two-story self-guided museum where visitors learn the history of the tracks through interactive galleries. Exhibits include the African-American experience during segregation, the Civil War and the railroad, the history and business of the railroad, along with items used in individual railcars. Tuesday-Saturday: 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sunday: 1-4 p.m. Open Mondays from April-September.

Kentucky Museum

Step into this ornate 80,000 sq. ft. museum rich in South Central Kentucky history. Housed on Western Kentucky University’s campus, the museum currently exhibits Instruments of American Excellence featuring Tony Hawk, Jimmy Carter, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Sandra Day O’Conner and many other famous Americans who use ordinary objects to do extraordinary things. South Union Shaker Village

Take a short drive west of Bowling Green to explore the serene life of the Shakers, an innovative, hard-working religious group. The Shaker community was established in 1807 and closed in 1922. The village site consists of several restored buildings including the 1824 Centre House, which contains one of the largest collections of Shaker furniture in the U.S., along with original furniture, crafts, textiles and manuscripts. Baker Arboretum & Downing Museum

Founded in 1992, this arboretum covers nearly 115 acres built on rolling hills featuring dogwoods, magnolias and other flowering trees, along with conifers and Japanese maples. Experience natural history as you take Kentucky’s only underground boat tour claimed to be the shortest and deepest in the world. A comfortable 57 degrees year-round, the tour offers a look into the timeless world of a Kentucky natural wonder. The guided walking tour shares stories of Native Americans, early European settlers, Civil War troops and the notorious Jesse James. Beech Bend Raceway Park

Located on 379 acres, Beech Bend encompasses an amusement park, drag strip, oval track and camp grounds. Beech Bend Raceway hosted more than a dozen national auto shows during the 2014 racing season and annually brings in more than 500,000 visitors. NCM Motorsports Park

The 186-acre Motorsports Park, located at 505 Grimes Road, includes two tracks that can be combined into four different configurations, ranging from a high-speed 1.96-mile loop to an extended 3.15-mile technical course. In fact, the corners of the Motorsports Park track were modeled to be identical to the Circuit de la Sarthe in Le Mans, France.

Aviation Heritage Park

This aviation memorial features five restored military aircraft with compelling ties to local aviators. The park displays aircraft from the Vietnam, Korean and Cold wars, along with a NASA T-38 Talon, the world’s first supersonic trainer used by the USAF before NASA astronauts began using them for travel and as chase planes. The park is free to the public. Open daily from dawn to dusk.

A Kentucky Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet by Certec, Inc., survey revealed that area tourism had the highest 2015 growth rate in the state. Warren County grew 6.6 percent, resulting in a $413.4 million economic impact. The 10-county Caves, Lakes & Corvettes region saw the highest increase in direct tourism expenditures in the state, with a rise in 6.9 percent equaling a $422.5 million economic impact. Because of combined efforts of the Bowling Green Area Convention & Visitors Bureau and area tourism partners, along with the appeal of Bowling Green attractions, meeting facilities and hospitality, more visitors are coming to the area every year. South Central Kentucky is home to one-of-a-kind attractions, including Mammoth Cave, the country’s second-oldest tourist attraction just behind Niagara Falls, and longest cave in the world at 400 miles explored thus far. Mammoth Cave National Park celebrated 200 years of cave tours in 2016, along with the National Park Service’s Centennial, plus 75 years of being a national park and 35 years as a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. WHY JOIN THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE? JASON MARSHALL OF CROWD SOUTH AND AMOEBA LEADER, LLC digs deep into the flourishing ecosystem that is the Chamber

ore often than I like, I hear comments from Chamber members who say, "The Chamber hasn't done anything for me." My initial reaction is to subdue a noticeable cringe or disapproving stare. My second is to assess how this individual is contributing to his or her cause. It seems many join the Chamber with the wrong impression. It's as if it's a momma bird who, after being given her dues, will go out and gather business, pre-masticate it and finally regurgitate it into their little business mouths for consumption. Unless your Chamber is run by Alicia Silverstone, I don't see this happening. The reality is the Chamber is not a momma bird, but rather an ecosystem in which your business can exist and thrive. Much like a natural ecosystem, the Chamber ecosystem has an interrelated and interdependent food chain necessary for each entity to exist. The big businesses can't exist without the small businesses. The small businesses can't exist without the workers from the big businesses. The occupational health clinics can't exist without the manufacturing plants. The manufacturing plants can't exist without the construction companies. The construction companies can't exist without the building supply companies. You see? Interdependence. Ideally, the Chamber's role is to build a self-sustaining ecosystem in which businesses can interact and support one another. This is why they only work with Chamber-partners and only allow sponsorships from Chamber-partners. They want the ecosystem to support itself, which necessitates living and operating within the ecosystem. Once you've lived in this ecosystem for a while, you might get to thinking, "I don't really need the Chamber anymore." Hold that thought. Ask yourself a few questions: 1) Have I fully taken advantage of the networking opportunities the Chamber has provided? 2) If the Chamber were to cease its existence, how many new large-scale developments would arrive in the future? 3) How successful would my business be if other businesses in my ecosystem ceased to exist

(remember... interdependence)? 4) Am I willing to play my small part in supporting the Chamber ecosystem to ensure it thrives as a self-sustaining business-generating ecosystem in which I am afforded many opportunities to succeed? Remember, the Chamber is there to support you, not feed you. You need to take advantage of the ecosystem it has created and make it work for you, not the other way

around. Don't expect handouts. If you're not seeing results, first look in the mirror. Then, contact the Chamber and see how it can help. Our Chamber here is full of hard-working, helpful individuals who are willing to help those who are willing to help themselves. I know there are many others across the country who do the same. So, take advantage of what the Chamber has to offer and see where it gets you. You might be surprised.

he Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science is Kentucky’s first residential high school for students who want to pursue advanced careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Students take coursework through Western Kentucky University with regularly enrolled college students. They live in the recently expanded Florence Schneider Hall. The Academy will be at capacity with 200 students with a second class of 100 students in 2017. The Gatton Academy empowers Kentucky’s exceptional young scientists and mathematicians to live and learn in an environment that offers advanced educational opportunities, preparing them for leadership roles. Students may take part in research led by university faculty. These one-on-one mentorships allow students to work on STEM research projects outside the classroom. Students share their findings through presentations at local, state and national conferences. In its 10th year, the Academy has received exceptional recognition. Newsweek named The Gatton Academy the No. 1 public high school in the country in 2012 and 2013, followed by the same No. 1 recognition by The Daily Beast in 2014.

The LEAD Academy includes Chromebook computer devices for all students, common planning for teachers, a guest speaker series and service learning project opportunities. ••• The 2016-19 Strategic Plan was developed over six months and included workshop training, coaching and district committee work for the five objectives. Although the Strategic Plan encourages future goals, BGISD is proud of its 201516 successes, including: • The Bowling Green High School Class of 2016 was made up of 302 graduates, including three National Merit finalists, four National Merit commended students and 72 honor graduates. The class earned more than $7.8 million in scholarships, with students attending 43 post-secondary institutions and serving in three branches of the military. • Dishman McGinnis and W. R. McNeill elementary schools earned Leader in Me Lighthouse status. They are two of 242 schools in the U.S. to earn the recognition. • Twenty-one Bowling Green Junior High School students earned state or grand recognition based on ACT scores and the national percentile rankings for high school juniors and seniors. Seventh-graders earning state recognition scored at or above the 50th percentile of juniors and seniors, and those earning grand recognition scored at or above the 90th percentile. • The 2015-16 season was a record year for Bowling Green High School athletics. The Purples won 10 region championships and the Class 5A state title in football.

WARREN COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS continued Four preschool Classrooms of Excellence are the second most of any district in the state. Christina Sanders of Rich Pond Elementary, Donna Williams of Plano Elementary and Kahlie Claywell and Lisa Miller of Bristow Elementary are among only 47 teachers out of the more than 1,000 preschool teachers to have achieved this honor. In 2016, The Kentucky Art Education Association honored Paul Johnson as its Middle School Art Teacher of the Year. WCPS is recognized across Kentucky for its Leader in Me initiative and leads the state with five Lighthouse schools at the elementary level. In 2013, Briarwood and Natcher became the first two Lighthouse schools in Kentucky, and more recently, Alvaton, Plano and North Warren received this distinction. The Leader in Me initiative focuses on Franklin Covey’s "7 Habits of Highly Effective People," and it aligns with the district’s vision for success. The district’s Energy Conservation Program also has garnered international attention since its implementation in 2003, with a cost savings of more than $10 million. Currently, 22 out of 23 buildings are

classified as Energy Star certified. Richardsville Elementary, which opened in fall 2010, became the nation’s first Net-Zero school, meaning it produces more energy than it consumes. Bristow and Jody Richards elementary schools soon followed and are

Net-Zero Ready schools. In addition to energy efficient buildings, WCPS prides itself in the quality of its state-of-the-art facilities. Most recently, Warren Central and Warren East high schools received significant renovations totaling more than $29 million.

WESTERN KENTUCKY UNIVERSITY WKU PROGRAMS ESTABLISHED TO MEET WORKFORCE DEMANDS Story by Robbin Morrison Taylor

he most significant way a public university can impact a stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s economy is to offer relevant programs that meet the workforce demands in the region it serves. A growing industrial base in South Central Kentucky and an aging population with increasing healthcare needs have been the impetus for the addition of programs in engineering, manufacturing engineering technology and healthcare at Western Kentucky University. In an effort to answer the call of industry leaders in South Central and Western Kentucky, WKU President Gary A. Ransdell and a group of advocates from regional manufacturing companies successfully established civil, electrical and mechanical engineering programs at WKU in 2001. All

three programs received accreditation by ABET, Inc., the professional organization responsible for accreditation of engineering programs, in 2004 and in 2010. More than $7.6 million has been raised privately to support engineering programs at WKU, and the programs have produced 679 graduates to date. Currently more than 700 students are enrolled in engineering programs at WKU, the focus of which is to put more engineers into the workplace in design centers, job sites and high-tech manufacturing facilities. WKU engineering students gain hands-on experience beginning in their first year and are able to apply the skills they learn in the classroom through industrially sponsored projects and regional and national competi-

tions. The WKU Concrete Canoe team competed for the 15th time at the national level, and the WKU Steel Bridge team qualified for the fourth consecutive year for the national competition. WKU also offers a major in manufacturing engineering technology to prepare graduates to apply basic engineering principles and advanced manufacturing technical skills in support of industrial operations. The program is accredited by the Association of Technology, Management and Applied Engineering. WKU also developed the AMS On-Demand program specifically for students from the Kentucky Community and Technical College System to build on their Associate of Science degrees. The program includes a personalized learning

program that allows students to complete course requirements on a schedule that is convenient for them and offers a flexible, quick pathway to a bachelor’s degree in manufacturing engineering technology. WKU offers state-of-the-art lab facilities and industry standard equipment in the Senator Mitch McConnell Integrated Applications and Advanced Manufacturing & Robotics laboratories. Students have access to CNC machines, three dimensional printers, an electronics lab and test and measuring equipment to name a few of the available resources. Workforce demands for more nurses and physical therapists are the driving force behind major initiatives at WKU to add advanced practice doctorate programs in nursing and physical therapy. In 2011 WKU established the Doctor of Nurse Practice degree program and graduated its first class of students in 2014. The DNP is a terminal professional degree focused on the clinical aspect of nursing and prepares registered nurses to become nurse practitioners. Private support has played a critical role in the growth of healthcare-related programs at WKU. A partnership with Med Center Health in Bowling Green to construct The Medical Center-WKU Health Sciences Complex has enabled WKU to nearly double the size of its nursing programs. Today more than 1,500 students are enrolled in WKU’s School of Nursing, and most WKU graduates go to work in the surrounding region. Like many states, Kentucky also suffers from a physical therapist shortage, especially in rural South Central and Western Kentucky communities, prompting a group of physical therapy and hospital professionals throughout these two regions to come together to create a Doctor of Physical Therapy program at WKU. Led by Bowling Green businessman and physical therapist Tom Pennington, this group worked tirelessly to raise funds to support a WKU DPT program, which was established at WKU in 2013 and welcomed its first class of 30 students that June. That inaugural class graduated in May 2016, and the Doctor of Physical Therapy program received its notice of accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education. Physical Therapy programs are eligible for initial accreditation after the final semester of the program has been completed prior to graduation.

In response to the growing need for more physicians, particularly in South Central and Western Kentucky, The Medical Center at Bowling Green successfully forged a partnership to locate a medical school in Bowling Green. In partnership with The Medical Center and WKU, the University of Kentucky plans to open a full, four-year medical school in Bowling Green in August 2018.

As thousands of college graduates enter the workforce, employers look for

students equipped with more than just the traditional knowledge and skills for their chosen profession. Want a nursing job? Know anatomy, disease management and patient care. Hoping to be a robotics technician? You need to be versed in computer programming and advanced manufacturing skills. But it is often not sufficient to simply know how to the do the job, students also are expected

to exhibit proper workplace behavior. SKYCTC is expanding its career readiness curriculum by teaching skills such as professionalism, workplace etiquette and teamwork. The Faculty Senate implemented a workplace ethics agreement in all classrooms to strengthen student mastery of punctuality and work ethic, classroom participation and

teamwork, appropriate dress, proper technology use and treating each team member with professional courtesy. Since the workplace ethics agreement implementation, GPAs and retention rates have improved, and employers are recognizing SKYCTC graduates’ solid work ethic. “We have set the bar higher for our students, so they will stand out to employers,” said SKYCTC President Phillip Neal. “They will be the preferred hires not

only because they have the necessary skills, knowledge and training to do the job, but also because they are dependable, hard-working and understand the expectation of today’s industries.” Only students who meet both the academic and work ethic behavioral expectations successfully complete their courses. Faculty report increased productivity in the classrooms, and students say they feel more motivated to succeed.
