E M CO L E W Upshot has been designed as a true, online eMagazine and is best enjoyed as such. Most computer systems with a good broadband connection will be able to access Upshot through the Bowls NZ website homepage. This is the best way to view the eMagazine because it allows you to appreciate the full colour and quality images and ‘turn’ the digital pages. To access Upshot online, it is recommended that you have a ‘broadband’ internet connection and a recent Operating System, such as Windows XP. We realize that the format of Upshot may be proving difficult for some people to access for a variety of issues such as; connection type and speed, older computer setups and appropriate software so we are looking into different electronic options to counter this. However, it is understandable that some of our readers may not have the computer resource to access Upshot. Club Secretaries or ‘tech savy’ readers will be able to download the PDF version of Upshot and save a copy. There are two types of PDF documents online on http://www.bowlsnz.co.nz/index.php?id=715 The first is the low resolution version of Upshot – in a compressed format. The second is the ‘Plain Version’ of Upshot, which contains all of the content in a ‘plain’ format without colour or images. This version might differ slightly, and should be more easily downloaded by ‘dial up’ connections. PDF files can only be opened by free software called Adobe Acrobat Reader (free from www.adobe.com). It is advisable that you have the latest version of Adobe installed (at least version 8.0). Many files downloaded from the internet will be PDF files (Portable Document Format) and most documents downloaded from www.bowlsnz.co.nz are PDF. The PDF format will allow you to open your own copy of Upshot that has been saved on your computer and print a hard copy. If you would like to conserve your ink it is recommended that you print in ‘draft’ quality or ‘grayscale’ using the print properties or options (settings will vary according to printer type). You can also select the specific pages that you would like to print using these same options. Otherwise, your local copyshop will be able to print this for you at a very low cost. Regrettably, Bowls NZ is unable to print copies for clubs or individuals mainly due to costs and practicality. It is encouraged that club secretaries print a hard copy for display at the club.

With over eighty Bowling Clubs officially promoting the Bowls NZ branded ‘Have A Go’ at Lawn Bowls day this year, October 11 is going to be a landmark occasion for Bowls. Bowls NZ and Auckland Bowls have been working together and over 30 clubs will all bear the national “Have A Go” branding for 11 October 2009. Nationally, not all clubs were able to fit the National October 11 “Have A Go” day into their programme but have opted to run a day either earlier or later in the season. With coordinated branding, the public at large, will be more able to identify welcoming bowling clubs and then step onto the green and have a go at bowls. 1. Give them a great experience at your club – create a fun and relaxed environment 2. Collect their contact details 3. Invite them back to your club with appropriate offer(s) so that you can earn revenue for your club. What does your club offer? Have you got the right offers? (Mates In Bowls, Christmas Bowls, Club Hire, Club Membership?)

Club’s that registered with Bowls NZ by the 11 September deadline, were supplied with 1 corflute sign (1200mm x 800mm) for display outside the club. Templates for A4 posters, A5 flyers and email marketing were supplied via email (or downloaded from www.bowlsnz. co.nz) to the coordinator at each club. These can be customised to suit your club. Some areas have also combined for promotion in their respective areas. Within Auckland, 9 Council Noticeboard sites were secured and feature Have A Go signage in high traffic areas. The most important aspect of the Have A Go days is to establish a database of participants, with contact details, so that you may invite these people back to your club for future participation. Do not expect a complete transition from Have A Go to full membership, although in some cases this might happen, most people will want to try it first and then gradually take up the sport. An easy way to do this, is by running a Mates In Bowls programme and inviting the Have A Go players back to participate

(using your database). Contact your Bowls NZ Community Development Officer for more information on Mates In Bowls. When President Dave Goodey and Secretary Mark Reid got together as the principal administrators at the Woburn Bowling Club a couple of years ago, the thoughts uppermost on most members’ minds was which Lower Hutt club they were going to amalgamate with. “Only 22 members turned up for my first opening day as President in 2006 and I realised then there was a huge job facing us if we wanted to save the club,” Dave says. Not only have Dave, Mark and a carefully chosen group of executive members saved the club, but at this season’s opening on September 12 – attended by close to 70 members – they became the first club in the North Island to be awarded Bowls New Zealand’s Club Check Gold Award. Dave quickly came to the conclusion on taking over that something drastic had to be done

to arrest Woburn’s dwindling membership numbers, its unsatisfactory cash flow and a general reluctance by members to put their

nearly 50 new members in largely following a hugely successful Have a Go day last year and an innovative Trade Me-based recruitment drive this

names forward as volunteers or prospective members of the executive. “So Mark downloaded the Club Plan templates from the Bowls New Zealand website and we set about putting the various modules in place and introducing an annual operating plan to ensure that we knew where we were going on an annual basis,” Dave says. Dave concentrated on getting the administration side sorted out, including adoption of Club Plan modules on job descriptions, financial management, succession planning, and policies and procedures documentation. Mark was tasked with the all-important role of growing membership and he’s helped bring

Bowls New Zealand Community Development Officer Paul Cavanagh was pleasantly surprised to find the club humming along when he first called, and since then he’s taken the club through the Club Check best practice assessment process, and scored them in the Gold Award category. As part of the Club Check assessment Cavanagh highlighted the merits of Mates in Bowls to the Executive and Mark was thrilled to sign up three new members even before their first MIB season got underway. And of course they signed up again for this year’s Have a Go Day promotion, hoping to repeat last year’s success. “Woburn’s a great model for other clubs in how to adopt and adapt various Bowls New Zealand initiatives in the areas of strategic planning, membership recruitment, governance and coaching of players, umpires and coaches,” Cavanagh says “and the Gold Award is fitting recognition of the hard work that has been put into the club by the new executive team.” Woburn Bowling Club executive members, from left, Peggy Maurirere, Jeff Thistoll, Margaret Wollerman and Dave Goodey (President) admire their Club Check Gold Award certificate.

T S R I F NZ FOR WAKEFIELD BOWLING CLUB “The best little bowling club in NZ”. That’s how Development Officer Vince Roper has described the Wakefield Bowling Club (Nelson) which is the first club in NZ to receive the ‘Club Essentials’ award. “It is no surprise to me that Wakefield rated so well as their leadership, enthusiasm and positive ‘can do’ attitude is such a great example to others”. Club Essentials is the Bowls NZ process for assessing smaller and rural bowling clubs against a ‘best practice’ club operating standard. It deals with ten priority areas from the Bowls NZ ‘Club Plan’ categories and the award is based on an external assessment of the club’s operations. The attainment of a Club Essentials Award is a very credible achievement for a small/rural club. As a reflection of sound club leadership and operating practices, the award serves as a useful benchmark for funders and sponsors wishing to direct their support to bowling clubs which are operating efficiently and effectively, and delivering a positive sporting experience to the community. And Wakefield is certainly doing that ... while the club is very well led by President Mike Stewart and an exuberant Robin Boutcher in the Club Development role, the

momentum and success is more about the way club members and the local community have positively swung in behind everything the club is trying to achieve. And the stories keep coming … people coming in asking how they can help, sizeable donations to the club, a very energetic committee taking on roles and responsibility for their areas of the club plan, someone with a dozer doing a freebie on the land planned for an artificial green, being stopped up the street to be told yet another local business wants to be a sponsor, the target of 12 teams for

‘Village Bowls’ soon becoming 20, a trip away as a club” etc etc. Good club leadership has been the key. Creating a vision which is about meeting the needs of members, talking and getting people enthusiastic, and then having processes to make sure it is all about actions not words. People at the club love what is happening. People in the town want to be part of it, and the two local newspapers are keenly competing to cover the club’s next success story. This is Wakefield … “The best little bowling club in NZ”.

S R A E Y 125 AT GISBORNE BOWLING CLUB Article Supplied by Trevor Helson 2009 is the 125th year that the Gisborne Bowling Club has operated out of its original location, probably the longest of any club in New Zealand. We are not sure, so if anyone can tell us otherwise we would love to hear about it. 2009 is also an important year because after 125 years of men only membership, the ladies were invited to become full members of the club this year and this has now happened with many taking up membership. The anniversary will be marked with the playing of the Ray White Gisborne Bellerby Cup on the 21st of November 2009, a graded fours event. Everyone is invited to a cocktail function on the Friday evening, the tournament on the Saturday followed by a dinner that evening. Sunday is an open day especially aimed at non-bowlers; anyone who would like to try this wonderful game is invited along to play and to enjoy the festivities. Browns Bay man, Greg Johnson will challenge for the national blind singles title in Balmoral (Auckland) with the help of Kevin Smith. Coping with one functional eye since he was 18, Johnson knew von Hippel-Lindau disease would one day render him completely blind. “I’ve seen nothing since July 2007.” Since then, the 35-year-old says he’s had to re-learn even the most basic of day-to-day skills with the support of wife Kathryn. But when it comes to bowls Johnson says he has a new pair of eyes in Smith. Former nurse Smith, 54, says he’s been impressed by Johnson’s attitude

since he first stepped on to the greens at Browns Bay Bowling Club. “Greg’s the club’s first blind player and proved very popular with other members”. He also says Johnson possesses significant talent. He’s as good as any first year player I’ve ever seen. Johnson says his confidence before he went blind has made him even more outgoing, a quality he wants to use to encourage those in similar situations to get active. “My opinion is if you want to do something, just get on and do it.” The Browns Bay Bowling Club raised $632 at a Blind Bowls tournament day which was donated to the Auckland Blind Bowls Association.

CLUBSCENE Kapiti Bowls Honours Outstanding Commitment In stepping down after four years as President of the Kapiti Coast Bowling Centre, Carrell Knight completed another stage of her 25 years involvement in bowls at club, centre and national level.

Michael Leggott, the newly installed President ,outlined some of Carrell’s involvements starting as an inaugural member of the Lyall Bay Bowling Club before moving to the Kapiti Coast in 1990 and joining the Waitarere Beach Bowling Club. “Hers has been a huge contribution to bowls in our Centre and she has given unstintingly of her time” said Leggott.

G N I R I P M U FOCUS ON Helen Stallard Bowls NZ Umpires Committee The Umpire’s Committee members have recently conducted the National Umpire’s Examinations throughout New Zealand. This is the second year that the exams have been conducted by the Umpire’s Committee and we now have gauged the prevailing tutoring and examination standards in the centres visited. The standard overall has been very high and compliments must go to the dedicated tutors who have obviously devoted many hours of work to get the candidates to such a competent level. It is very pleasing to report that there are now seventy new umpires and eighteen new measurers who have passed the exams this year, many with well over the 90% required for each part of the exam.

It is also fantastic that the candidates told examiners many times how much they had enjoyed the course and how much they had learned for their own game. Knowing the Laws of the sport is paramount on many occasions leading to success on the green therefore perhaps it would be worthwhile for you to consider doing the Umpire’s course next year for yourself!! Buddy up with a like minded player in a joint effort to at least become a Measurer or at best a full Umpire. It is pleasing to record that Canterbury has a new deaf umpire in Dennis Herrick. Dennis passed his exam with the help of an interpreter, gaining 96% in the oral and 98% in the practical. He’s looking forward to being able to umpire at the Deaf National Championships each year. Thanks also must go to the examiners who selflessly gave their

time to conduct the examinations at a time to suit centres. It is somewhat alarming though that some centres have trained no new umpires for the past two years. Umpires are an essential part of the game, particularly for centre and regional games, so please consider shoulder tapping candidates early so that you can set a timetable to suit for next year. Centre and Club Boards have a role to play insuring that the body of umpires remains at a sustainable level for the needs of the Centre. A full report will be circulated to all centres on the examinations and thoughts of the examiners in due course and next year we hope that all centres will have candidates for the umpire’s examinations. In the meantime we wish all new umpires and measurers the very best for their career in umpiring.

Health and safety issues, there is a plan, are you aware of its existence, are you fully aware of your responsibilities in this regard? 10. Are you able to address an executive meeting of the club, or is the Greens Superintendent delivering a sanitised version of issues you rise with him/her? 11. Is your club executive hindering a greens project in favour of bar renovations or similar? 12. How supportive is the club, supplying you with wet weather gear and other equipment or occasional fuel vouchers to make

your position easier, particularly if you are a volunteer. 13. Are you encouraged to attend field days and cluster meetings of your Green keeping association, attendance NI or SI green keepers conferences? 14. Does your club secretary pass on the Turf Journal and other GK correspondence? Have you received your Diary, it contains that all important record of chemical usage? 15. What articles would you like to see in the Turf Management Journal or in UPSHOT? 16. Contingency plan, what if you were incapacitated from tomorrow? All records up to date? The ball is in your court to lobby on your behalf in the interests of one of the clubs greatest assets the green and yourself.
