H T I W S E L P P A S E L P AP Fitzroy Bowling Club merged 3 clubs (Fitzroy, East End, Waiwaka Women) into one back in 1998, and, one of the many merger tasks was “insurance” at the premises at the East End Reserve.
After obtaining information from all 3 clubs executives and members, it was pleasing to see that TOWER was the preferred insurance company by all 3 clubs and indeed dozens of members, however it was good business practice to obtain quotes from other insurance companies to compare “apples with apples” as well as actual premium costs. In 1998 we found that TOWER was not only the most competitive in price, but was also the most comprehensive cover for Bowling Club needs – plus in those days our members cover was on a commission basis to our club. Over the past 10 years our club has enjoyed a good business relationship, none more than a “break-in” 2 years ago when extensive damage was done to an exterior wall and windows. Our Secretary/Manager spoke highly of the prompt service from TOWER, their
ER W O T D N I F AND ST E B S I R E V O CLUB C
assessor and building company who completed the repairs. Good business practice is to ensure that our costs are checked annually and this is no difference in our club when it comes to insurance – every 2 years we go out into the market place for insurance quotes and have found when we do TOWER is still the best policy and best price for our bowling club. Further to our excellent relationship with TOWER as our insurer we have also benefitted from the Bowls NZ TOWER Bowls Development Fund when promoting Have A Go Days and our summer Mates In Bowls programme. The Fitzroy Bowling Club not only commends the TOWER Bowls Club Cover but also recommends it as one of the best in the market place – tell your club Treasurer to get a quote – you won’t be disappointed.

BLACK JACKS FIGHT FOR SUCCESS Australian based Black Jack Richard Girvan won the Trusts New Zealand Open mens singles discipline after defeating Auckland’s Neil Fisher in a thrilling encounter on the TV rink at Henderson. Beckenham’s Black Jack Jan Khan also put on a great show in the womens singles going down to Australia’s class act Sharyn Renshaw 21-19 in a final that could have easily gone either way. Khan was always fighting from behind after Renshaw ran out to a comfortable lead, but Khan’s fierce competitiveness was on full display bringing the score even at 19-19. However, Renshaw played an
outstanding bowl with her last to remove Khan’s two winning shots and sit two shots herself for the title. Girvan had a similar feat finding himself 11-2 down in the final, but his experience proved invaluable as he played some telling bowls to draw the score level at 20-20 going into the last end. Girvan drew a side toucher and Fisher attacked with all four of his bowls unsuccessfully to give the Black Jack this years title. In other disciplines, both womens pairs combinations were exited in the quarter final stages in what were close encounters. Khan and Greenfield went out on an extra end against eventual runner-ups Anne Johns and Penny Landherr from Australia. The mens pairs duos of Ali Forsyth and Mark Watt and Richard Girvan and Andrew Todd all took a sharp exit losing to two widely recognised combinations. All of the finals will be screened on Sky TV in the near future to give bowlers and non-bowlers the chance to relive the action in their own living rooms. See www.aucklandbowls.co.nz for listings. S K C A J K BLAC Produce The Goods In Hong Kong Val Smith, Andrew Kelly, Genevieve Baildon and Richard Collett have all returned home from the Hong Kong Classic International event with medal placings. The four Black Jacks put on an exceptional performance throughout the event with Baildon winning the Hong Kong Classic singles event and Kelly and Collett being crowned the pairs champions. Twenty-two-year-old Cantabrian Andrew Kelly was rapt with his effort and said the conditions were different to those at home. “The greens varied in speed but overall were pretty true to play on,” Kelly said. “We were always confident going into the pairs because with eleven rounds of section play you know you can go in there and give it a good whack.”
Team mate and Hyundai National Singles champion Richard Collett said they won the games that mattered and fought hard when they had to. “It was quite an experience playing the locals because they play such a different style of game to us, but it was just a matter of adapting to the conditions and giving it our best crack,” Collett said . Junior world singles champion and now Hong Kong singles champion Genevieve Baildon said it was an unreal experience on what were varied conditions. “It was great to be able to play against the best players in the world and I took a lot away from it,” Baildon said. Double world champion Val Smith said the semi final game in which they went out was extremely competitive and was a great display of bowls.
“The scoreline had no true reflection on the class of that game,” Smith said. “The Malaysian skip really played well and with her last bowl she would just play some excellent shots and obviously we couldn’t do anything about it with no bowls left, but we certainly matched them for skill.” Bowls NZ National Coach Dave Edwards said he was delighted with the overall performance from both teams and their final placings. “It was a fantastic result for them all in what would have been difficult conditions,” he said. The four Black Jacks will now turn their attention to the upcoming centre representative fixtures before competing in the Hyundai National Open Championships.

Adream SOCIAL SUMMER LEAGUE
“I couldn’t get too sleep that night, because I kept thinking about how good it went”, reflects Mary Solomon after Rotorua East Bowling Club’s very first and very successful, Mates In Bowls (MIB) session in November. Mary is the club’s vice president and as MIB leader, she is the driving force behind the Mates In Bowls programme that saw upwards of 50 casual bowlers ‘handle the jandal’. For Rotorua East, MIB was an opportunity for the club to expose its modern building and excellent facilities to the community, “we wanted to bring people into the premises, in particular casual bowlers who are in the target age group and might even book the club for events” said Mary. The added income through entries and potential bar revenue was also an incentive for the forward thinking club that has been working steadily through ClubPlan. Planning for MIB began in August, with Mary gaining support from the Club Executive and then rounding up a team of key volunteers to assist. Steve Beel, Bowls NZ Community Development Officer (CDO) for Region 2, has assisted the club with both MIB and Club Plan. In addition, Mary worked with the council to ensure that the club’s liquor licence was
for rotorua east
redefined to be compliant. Steve says, “Rotorua East has been great to work with. President Stu Whibley has led his team very well through the ClubPlan process. The club now has a plan to secure their future. A significant component in the plan was local community involvement and MIB was seen as the ideal vehicle”. The MIB marketing and support package was utilised to the full extent by Rotorua East, examples include: l MIB corflute signage outside the club, and one was even setup on a private property on the main road l MIB Postcards were distributed and according to Mary, “we saturated the local residency with postcards” l Advertisements in local publications l A4 posters delivered to large businesses in our area and displayed in shops at the local shopping centre l 30 second, free advertisement on Classic Hits. l Radio Network Community Noticeboard. l Bowls NZ initiated additional marketing with postcards sent to business PO Boxes, residential homes and a generic business fax. Mary appreciates the MIB resources provided and that they are “really, really good and professional. We couldn’t have done it ourselves”.
According to Mary, the Player Marketing Contribution was money well spent. In addition, Rotorua East acknowledges the support of the TOWER Bowls Development Fund. The volunteers were pleased to have a ‘foot in the door’, as some businesses they approached, had already seen MIB postcards or faxes. Door knocking was very effective with one company signing up four teams! An MIB ‘registration’ barometer was setup in the club, with a jandal marking the current number of teams signed up. This was a great visual aid. Commitment from players was secured and a week before starting, 16 of the 18 teams had already paid in full. A positive spin off from MIB has been an increased enthusiasm within the club, with many members already talking about how they can help to improve for the next series in March. After only two nights, the club has 3 new social members and 1 full playing member signed up, which is certainly a big bonus. As well as income through bar and player entry fees. Steve says that Rotorua East “proves that if you get the leadership right, with a can do attitude, ‘glass half full’, outlook then anything is possible. Mary has a great bunch of volunteers to assist the process. The results being achieved are proof that the Bowls NZ programmes of ClubPlan coupled with Mates in Bowls, is the way of the future.

D N A L S I H NORT SILVER CLUBCHECK AWARDED!
Levin’s Central Bowling Club doesn’t intend resting on its laurels after becoming the first club in the North Island to be awarded a ClubCheck Silver Award. No sooner had club treasurer Craig Smith seen the award certificate handed to club president Noel Davies than he vowed to secure a gold award in 2010. And Bowls New Zealand CDO Paul Cavanagh, who made the presentation, has no doubt the club will achieve that aim. Cavanagh said the club had made a remarkable turnaround from a club politely described at the award function by Horowhenua District Council Mayor Brendan
Duffy as ‘buggered’ to a revitalised organisation trading profitably and generating a healthy financial surplus. A major part of that revitalisation has been the involvement of a greater number of members in a wider range of club activities. As Noel Davies noted when accepting the award: ‘We have changed from being a club of users to a club of enthusiasts.’ Just two years ago the club’s finances were in a parlous state after two years of running at a loss. There was great concern about the ability of the club to meet its financial obligations in the year ahead. Step up a new financial sub-committee which introduced budgeting and established

a ‘think tank’ whose recommendations included eliminating all paid positions, keeping expenditure under tight control and increasing revenue. Pretty basic aims, you might say, but they were made to work with the assistance of the guidelines set down in the Club Plan modules on the Bowls New Zealand website. Among the major Club Plan implementations were the rewriting of the club’s constitution, a bestpractice approach to the selling of advertising and sponsorship and the completion of job descriptions for all key positions. CDO Cavanagh was called in to review the strategic plan and its annual operations plan and at the subsequent ClubCheck assessment the club achieved silver award status, narrowly missing out on a gold award. ‘When the ClubCheck assessment was done, the club didn’t have a web site, so that counted against them. But they’ve addressed that already and will conduct their first venture into Mates in Bowls in January, so I have no doubt the new spirit within the club will take them to a gold award in the next assessment,’ Cavanagh says. Congratulating Central Levin on its turnaround, Kapiti Coast Centre President Michael Leggott noted that the future of bowls in New Zealand would depend on clubs (like Central) that survived and were attractive to join.

National Bowls Awards 2008- 2009
D E S I N G O C E R WINNERS AT LOCAL PRESENTATIONS This year, with no formal evening for presenting national bowls awards, various presentations have been made locally, across the country. Often, these have been linked into another event or occasion appropriate for such an honour. Three of the ten awards have been presented, with the remainder being recognised during the Hyundai National Open Championships or other presentations at clubs.
Media Award – Alistair McMurran – Otago Daily Times Bowls NZ Board member Cushla McGillivray was at the North East Valley Singles and presented the first of the Bowls NZ Awards to the winner of the Media Award, Alistair McMurran. In his acceptance, Alistair spoke warmly of Bowls NZ and complimented the forward thinking and planning with the sport in general. He has noticed big changes in the 30years that he has been covering the sport.
Player of the Year – Jo Edwards (Burnside) Volunteer of the Year – Ken Haworth (Burnside) Bowls NZ Board member, Cushla McGillivray attended a recent presentation at the Burnside Bowling Club to recognise club members, Ken Haworth and Jo Edwards, winners of the Volunteer and Kia Kaha Player of the Year awards respectively. According to Cushla, both recipients made worthy and entertaining speeches and acknowledged the pride of being selected to win their Awards. Jo Edwards mentioned that she was especially thrilled to receive this award at her own club, with her members present. “That is what our sport is about for a large majority of members. I am of the view that [Burnside] is generally a happy club because so many members are ‘givers’ and are prepared to help with whatever is required”, said Cushla. Photos courtesy of Arjan van Hasselt.

Northern came out as the inaugural victors for the Bowls New Zealand Challenge Trophy after posting an impressive record throughout the three disciplines of triples, pairs and singles. The star of the tournament was Northern’s 19-year-old and former New Zealand U18 representative Gregory Ruaporo who won his way through nine games and was the only player at the event to gain a clean sweep. Ruaporo teamed up with Tony Grantham and Richard Collett in the triples discipline, Grantham in the pairs and went on to beat Mainland’s

Well somehow 2009 is almost over and I find myself writing the last column for the year. A good time to acknowledge all those hardworking members of the coaching community who put in many hours helping others get the best out of their bowling experience. We are seeing a change of attitude amongst bowlers, as a result of good coaches offering enjoyable challenging activities that show bowlers that there is more to coaching than technique and that a roll up is not effective practice. Thank you coaches, your dedication and enthusiasm is making a difference. Among the other positive signs of change is the increasing willingness
of centre coaching groups to engage with the Coach Force staff at the Regional Sports Trusts. As well as providing interesting updating/ educational workshops they are also offering extremely valuable support to centre coaching groups/ committees. One of the most exciting developments is the appointment of the first dedicated bowls Coach Force Officer by Sport Taranaki. Stephen Brophy was appointed just prior to the season opening and is already making a positive impact. He is determined to raise standards in Taranaki through a revival of coaching and has put together a good plan to achieve that. So far 20 new coaches have “signed on” for the challenge. This is a great

opportunity for bowlers in Taranaki to get behind his initiatives and make it work. I recently visited Taranaki to help Stephen demonstrate to representative players and selectors the benefits of purposeful training. The theme for the morning session was line control and we used the games featured here. It was great to see the players enjoying the challenge and at the same time improving the quality of bowls they played. Best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy 2010. For those of you attending “the Hyundai Nationals” prepare well and enjoy the benefits.

1. Effective line control
2. Tactical awareness and skill to limit opponents opportunities to score

The Game: l 4 Bowls per player - singles l 3 Bowls per player – pairs
The Game:
l 2 Bowls per player – triples or fours
l Can be played in any discipline with the normal number of bowls per player
l Game is played as normal, but without a jack – objective is drawing to the centre line with consistent bowl speed – grouping of bowls
l Rink 2 mats (1.2m) wide (very skilled players can try 1 mat length)
l Placement of the jack is made once all bowls have been played and is determined by the toss of a coin – the skip winning the toss places the Jack on the Centre line.

BOWLS D N U F T N E M P O L E V DE TOWER’s focus has always been to support bowlers, club and the national organisation and their commitment to bowls over the years has been instrumental in helping us grow and develop the sport. In light of this support, the TOWER Bowls Development Fund is available to all bowling clubs who need financial support in the development and implementation of bowls initiatives that attract new participants to the sport as well as initiatives that improve the skill levels of the Club Executive and volunteers.
PURPOSE OF THE FUND The TOWER BOWLS DEVELOPMENT FUND has been created expressly to support club level initiatives in two key areas: 1. The creation and promotion of activities to introduce and attract NEW players (adults) and NEW target audiences (age groups and ethnicities) to the sport of lawn bowls 2. The up-skilling of key volunteers, personnel and Executive Members through short-term training initiatives and conference opportunities that relate to Bowls NZ’s Club Plan modules in order to generate an immediate benefit to the club, in terms of improving the club’s governance, administration or operations. ... Is the by-line for Squad6, the newest brand from Bowls NZ aimed at encouraging more secondary school students to trial bowls. Squad6 is currently being introduced across the country, following successful trials in Napier, through Bowls Taradale. The Youth Bowls Advisory Group
(Sharon Sims, Howard Sandler Auckland, George Rogers - BOP, Wilma Ennor - Hawkes Bay, Janice Ropitini - Taranaki, Nathanael Lucas - Wellington, Rebecca Maurice - Canterbury and Gordon Crombie Southland) identified the need for a new recruitment event and developed the SQUAD6 concept based on a very successful event run in Auckland by Howard. So what is Squad6? It is a structured 4-6 week, 1-1.5hour inter-school lawn bowls competition played after or during school. Squad6 sides consist of 3 pairs, any gender combination of secondary school aged students, playing speed pairs. Squad6 is an opportunity for secondary school aged students to be introduced to the game of bowls in a fun and relaxed environment and will complement our National Secondary Schools Championships which has developed into a very competitive event for the top players. Lawn bowls is a truly inclusive sport that anyone can play and interest among students is increasing, with 77% increase in bowls event participation since 2000. We’ve trialed the Squad6 concept at Bowls Taradale and the students loved it! l “I would recommend that my friends try it” - 100% l “I have learned a new sport” - 75% l “I enjoyed playing the game” - 88% l “I would like the opportunity to learn and play more” - 75%
The objectives of Squad6 are to: l Increase participation numbers and foster youth development in bowls l Further strengthen school and community relationships with our bowling clubs l Increase interest in bowls and challenge the stereotype By using the excellent facilities and resources of our bowling clubs, the Squad6 programme can be tailored to suit the needs of the local community.
Get involved! Bowls NZ Community Development Officers (CDO) will work with their local clubs, secondary schools, Regional Sports Trusts (RST) & Centre youth Coordinators to deliver SQUAD6 throughout the country.
Funding To play, a fee of $10 per/player (payable to Bowls NZ) will be invested back into the brand and promotional costs. Together (Bowls NZ/Clubs) we intend to apply for Kiwisport funding assistance for SQUAD6 clubs to help with the operating costs of providing SQUAD6 e.g. greens maintenance, bowls, mats & jacks usage, direct expenses for volunteers & coaches (such as transport costs), costs for use of the clubhouse facilities (cleaning, electricity, water, kitchen use etc)
The Next Steps If you would like your club to be part of Squad6, the next step is to confirm your club’s interest in the programme by contacting your local CDO.

FOCUS ON umpiring
markers
bowls nz umpires committee
Markers are an integral part of our game, but a good game of Singles can be ruined by having a ‘poor’ marker. I say ‘poor’ but it’s not the markers fault that he or she has not been trained up adequately. Coaches, umpires and even your club executive must put in place a suitable training programme for our newer players and even our not so new players, so that they can perform the duties of marking when called upon to do so. At club championship , Centre, Regional and National levels we need competent efficient markers and this just doesn’t happen by itself! Has your club got a suitable training programme in place? Law 55 is a good place to start. It is also important to realise that a marker is ‘a neutral object’ in the terms of the law.(Law 1.3.23) Here are some relevant questions and answers and a guide you could cut out and reproduce. Q1.
Where should a marker stand on the head?
Q2.
What is Jack high?
Q3.
Should a marker advise players when a Jack is not up?
Q4.

FOCUS ON GREEN KEEPERS
COMBINED FIELD DAYS THE
NEW ERA Martin Christiansen, Green keeper, Bowls Tolaga Bay We are approximately six months into an era of doing “things” differently as Bowls NZ Green keepers and Green keeping Associations. Our commitment and responsibilities to our clubs and Centres haven’t changed, what has changed is that we are in charge of our own destiny into the future brought about by the changed for the better criteria of Bowls NZ renewed contract with NZ Sports Turf. We as greenkeepers are in the box seat relating to ongoing training and up skilling focused on our own local and regional requirements through the schedualed field day/s and our relationship with our Agronomists who in this new era are delivering to us programmes at cluster meetings and field days tailor made to address our immediate local agronomy needs. Several Centres have already have seized the initiative and the opportunities offered, by submitting suggested programme content to our NZSTI Agronomists as well as combining with adjacent Centre green keepers at a mutually agreed venue culminating in a full day mini turf conference well attended. The new era changes sure beat the often told
scenario of the schedualed visit from the Agronomist to a club with gate locked and not a sole in sight. A recent successful joint Centre application for funding for a vertidrain and corer was an outcome of a combined association. The opportunity doesn’t stop with the Agronomists presenting to us, quest trade speakers and suppliers can be invited to attend as well as the club green superintendants who I feel are not “lent on” enough by our clubs to take a more active part in our affairs. I would also mention the changed presentation of the ITO Level three Bowls green keeping diploma, spread over four bit size two day workshops during the year rather than a week long sit in, great value at a generously subsidised cost. The possibility of e-learning programmes is being explored by the Turf Industry Training Organisation which is a further opportunity towards upskilling our members. I strongly suggest to those Bowls Green keeping Association Presidents and committees who are yet to embrace combined field days with your neighbouring Centres make them an agenda item at your next meeting.

NEED 2 KNOW
Good News Article supplied by Grant Burgess In 1945 when CW (Charlie) Good won his first of six Whakatane Bowling Club Singles Championships, he could never have known 47 years later his son John would win it and 64 years later the family success would be continued by his Grandson. Having to account for 2007/8 BOP Player of the Year, Wayne Philips along the way, Dave Good recently won a one sided final. Remarkably, after first picking up a bowl just 2 years ago, Good has already won 12 titles. This one has real sentimental value & I guess playing in Dan Delany’s team in the final of the Eastbourne 4’s was pretty memorable; that’s the great thing with bowls, a junior like me gets the opportunity to play in a final against 3 world champions (Gary Lawson, Ryan Bester, Andrew Todd) Good says he took up the sport as a result of the success of the Mates in Bowls program “hat’s off to Bowls NZ, it shows what happens when someone has a good idea and packages it up into a fun social format”. I was extremely lucky, only in bowls could a first year player find himself playing in a team with a World Champion (2007 World Singles Champ of Champions Tony Grantham) and a guy with multiple NZ titles ( Ross Haresnape). Ross & Tony have taught me so much. Good who keeps dual memberships with Whakatane and Auckland’s Birkenhead club, cites support from Bowls North Harbour and coaches Keith Burgess and Max Dick for his success. I’ve had a few lucky wins, people think I’m mad with the amount I train but if you want to do well you have to, it’s a very humbling sport, it was just a couple of seasons ago that another first year player and I played in a Friday afternoon roll up and got thrashed by a 91 year old lady and a blind man.

NEED 2 KNOW Motueka Bowling Club Centenary Article supplied by Dave Patrick The Motueka Bowling Club held it’s Centenary Celebrations at Labour weekend at the Clubrooms in Pah St Motueka. This was very well attended with many former members of the club present, and especially welcome were those who came from out of town. On Friday evening, a social, meet and greet time was held. On Saturday, a drawn triples competition took place, which was keenly contested by all the teams participating. Sunday saw the “Naming of the Two Greens Ceremony” conducted by the Mayor for Tasman, Richard Kempthorne. The greens are now known as the H .Whitwell & the M. Krammer greens in recognition of the tremendous work done by these gentlemen for the club. Mr Alan Griffiths of Bowls NZ was the guest speaker. The day concluded with a 3 course meal and was well entertainment by a vocal group. Monday’s event was an invitation 4’s competition which drew a field of 80 players, many representing the various clubs from around the area. At the conclusion, the president Don Quayle thanked everyone who had been involved and for the great support the weekend had received. The event had been extremely successful and was enjoyed by all who had attended.
10th Annual Clif Shanks Memorial Trans Tasman Invitational Pairs Article supplied by Grant Goodwin The 10th Annual Clif Shanks Memorial Trans Tasman Invitational Pairs was played over a very sunny Labour weekend at the Hillsboro Bowling Club. Another strong field was put in place by the organisers with the winners going on to represent Hillsboro at the Annual Coffs Harbour Master Pairs in Australia in July 2010. The main event saw David Hood from Kerikeri along with Bart Robertson from Birkenhead taking an early 4-2, then 9-4 lead over Grant Goodwin and Chris Lowe from Hillsboro, but with some excellent drawing when 5 and 4 down by first Lowe and then Goodwin they had the score locked up at 11 all with two ends to play. Goodwin & Lowe picked up a further two making them two up playing the last, Robertson & Hood held shot on the last end with two thirds but with Goodwin’s last bowl he drew a front toucher to claim shot, Robertson drove to remove it or kill the end but was unsuccessful so Goodwin & Lowe became the 2009 champions.

BOWLER JACK An innovative approach to sustainability is this example from the Martinborough Bowling Club (established 1909) who is now producing their own Pinot Noir for sale. The following is from the reverse of the bottle’s label: “The land set aside for its second bowling green laid fallow until 2005 when a group of keen members established a Vineyard on the vacant plot. The 800 vines in close spaced rows, hand tended by volunteers have produced the premium grapes included in the wine – enjoy – you will also be helping our club’s survival” The Vineyard and Marketing Operation are being managed by a standalone Committee of four as a less structured approach by club members did not prove successful. The Vineyard is leased, with 10% of profit and product returned to the club. Once fully established, the venture will return around $5,000 pa. The club expects to produce 70/80 dozen a year. Next years, Vintage 2009 is picked with the help of members from the Paraparaumu Beach Bowling Club and is expected to be released in October 2010, when it is matured.
