revolutioN. IN THE BEGINNING THERE WAS BOXPARK SHOREDITCH — THE WORLD'S FIRST POP-UP MALL The brainchild of Roger Wade, creator of British Streetwear brand Boxfresh, Boxpark grew out of his love for the raw power of industrial architecture and his passion for independent brands, which are increasingly getting squeezed out of our homogeneous high streets. Then, as now, this is radical stuff, stripping and refitting shipping containers to create flexible, low cost retail spaces that stack up to make a brand new breed of retail destination – and to create a business environment where fresh, innovative independent retailers will thrive. It’s a retail revolution that’s spawned many imitators but no equals. until noW.
[5]
evolutioN. A casual dining revolution, where retail becomes entertainment BOXPARK CROYDON EMBRACES THE ORIGINAL ETHOS, AND THEN SOME. Bigger by far, more ambitious and even more radical, it’s founded on the heartfelt conviction that people deserve better; that in an increasingly digital era where everything’s available at the click of a mouse we need to give people more… And we can do that by creating a place that’s a joy to visit and makes you want to stay… A destination where people love to turn up, unwind and hang out – and a home for handpicked, authentic brands that make you feel special. Like its forebear, Boxpark Croydon will be a home only for carefully chosen fiercely independent, fresh-thinking businesses with a strict ‘no high street fascia’ rule. Like Boxpark Shoreditch it’s going to be a fertile community of brands packed with raw talent and attitude – the difference is that this time it’s all about... Food, drink and evenTS creating a place that’s part of the casual dining revolution, where retail becomes entertainment amid a riot of colour, sounds, scents and the flavours of food from all over the world.

CROYDON
Croydon is famous for its postwar skyscrapers and 60's skyline, a time when the town was booming and optimistic. With new ventures such as Boxpark it does feel that there is a spirit of excitement coming to Croydon town centre again.
—Jon grindrod, AUTHOR OF CONCRETOPIA & CROYDON TILL I DIE
WHY CROYDON?
‘I think it's the most derogatory thing I can say about somebody or something: God, it's so f**king Croydon!’ —DAVID BOWIE From arguably London’s fastest and best road, rail and airport connections to the enormous development programmes already under way, the list of logistical, financial and geographical reasons is long and persuasive. As are Croydon’s cultural credentials… From Croydon College of Art to Fairfield Hall; Malcolm McLaren to Mervyn Peake, Ray Davies to Jamie Reid and countless others, Croydon punches well above its literary, musical and artistic weight… But there’s something more powerful fuelling Boxpark’s zeal for its new home – the fact that the ‘great and the good’ seem to think it’s OK to sneer at Croydon. For Boxpark's Roger Wade that’s an irresistible challenge to Boxpark’s inclusive philosophy. ‘Maybe it’s because it’s still scarred by the brutalist architecture of the failed 60s and 70s vision of town planning; maybe it’s just lazy anti-suburban intellectual snobbery… It’s wrong. I want to rise to that challenge, change people’s perceptions of Croydon and make them fall in love with the town they live in. It’s not grey, it’s not drab – it’s the home of Kate Moss, Tracey Emin, and now Boxpark. —Roger Wade

WHY CROYDON?
We're not just building boxpark in croydon, we're building it for croydon... ‘As part of the wider regeneration of Croydon, I’m determined that as its cultural, culinary and social heart, Boxpark will put a smile on Croydon’s face and a song in its soul. We’re not just building Boxpark in Croydon; we’re building it for Croydon!’ ‘We’re very proud of the contribution we’ve made to Shoreditch’s community in the last few years… Around 200 new jobs for young people at a time when there was rioting in the streets… more than 200 free events a year (and counting)… free pop-up shops for young local creative businesses to give them a start in retail… We get a kick out of that. And it’s not just altruism – inspired, young positive people are good business – and that enriches us all…’ ‘We’re already working with local organistations to develop programmes so local young people can come and work at Boxpark… Proper training, proper jobs with proper prospects...’ —Roger Wade

a modern-day covent garden piazza for the 21st century Inspiration Think of Borough Market, Brixton Market, Chelsea Market NYC or even Madrid’s stunningly rejuvenated Mercado St Miguel, which is described as a ‘culinary cultural centre’. Then transport those sights, sounds and smells into a brand new Boxpark space with two rows of ‘Box Shops’ and a high transparent roof covering a bright and airy atrium and you have A Covent Garden Piazza for the 21st century. Like a modern-day piazza, Boxpark Croydon will become the area’s focal point for people to hang out, to enjoy a wild and ever-changing variety of food, drink and more free events than you can shake a stick at. From pop-up cinema and mini music festivals to art installations, theatrical productions and more in a 2000+ capacity central space equipped with giant state of the art LED screens interacting with visitors in real time and fizzing with fresh creative content.

"BOXPARK IS A MODERN, APPEALING AND INVENTIVE IDEA THAT IS CLEARLY SUCCESSFUL AND THE CONCEPT HAS THE POTENTIAL TO PLAY A POSITIVE ROLE IN REGENERATION THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY."
"ITS A PHENOMENON AND IF YOU GO THERE IN THE EVENING IT IS JUST RAMMED WITH YOUNG PEOPLE."
This brilliantly extroverted take on the traditional indoor market, brings a lively energy to the entrance of East Croydon Station; a stopping point on the path to the new developments along the railway. The project is impressive in its diversity of users, crossing a variety of generations and communities. Boxpark felt like it truly lived up to its aspiration as a market in the spirit of Covent Garden and Greenwich Market.
