GEORGIA - FLORIDA GOLF CLASSIC
GATORS & DAWGS: GAME ON An epic battle is set to brew. Every October, Georgia Dawgs and Florida Gators rip apart their closets, looking for any and every piece of clothing that displays their school spirit, then they head to Jekyll Island to show their gusto on our greens. For more than 30 years, the long-celebrated Georgia-Florida Golf Classic weekend has been a fan favorite on Jekyll Island, no matter which alma mater you’re cheering on. For me, well, I have to say I’m a proud Double-Dawg. Twice, Athens has been my homebase and the hallowed halls of the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communications were my central headquarters. (Luckily, I picked the college that directly neighbored Sanford Stadium. Having my nose buried in a textbook during a football Saturday was a much more tolerable when I could hear the roars of cheering fans as I studied in the student lounge.) Despite my red-and-black leanings, I’ll admit the thing no good Dawg is supposed to say: I have the utmost respect for you Gators. Just as fiercely as the Athens kids defend their turf, so too, do the Florida breeds. (But honestly, orange and blue, together? What were y’all thinking?)
Georgia-Florida guests will put their gameday preferences aside to enjoy the events surrounding this year’s classic, including a tailgate party, Dinner with a Legend event, and a Seafood Feast for golfers and their guests. For more Georgia-Florida Golf Classic information and for registration information, see pages 12 and 13. For more news of Jekyll events, trip ideas and information this month and beyond, take a look through the pages of Beachscape, then be sure to join us on Facebook (/JekyllIsland), Twitter (@Jekyll_Island) and Pinterest (/JekyllIsland), as well as on our blog (jekyllisland.com/blog). Go Dawgs, Happy Halloween and enjoy!
Come October 30, the classic SEC rivalry will take to the links on Jekyll, this year being bigger and better than ever. Aside from the golf showdown,

CELEBRATE ARCHIVES MONTH Historians rejoice: October is Georgia Archives Month! On Thursday, October 17, join the Jekyll Island Museum to explore current oral history research conducted from 1947 to 1986. A presentation of State Era Stories will be shared to gain the perspectives of island guests, residents, and employees, during a time of great change on Jekyll Island. Every October, archives and repositories around the country celebrate Archives Month in order to raise awareness of their work. The 2013 theme for Georgia Archives Month is “Current Events, Future Jekyll Island Authority
History.” This year, the Jekyll Island Museum celebrates Georgia Archives Month by presenting current oral history research which focuses on Jekyll Island’s more recent past. In a project supported by the Georgia Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities and through appropriations from the Georgia General Assembly, Jekyll museum researchers have spent countless hours interviewing longtime members of the island community. Gretchen Greminger, the curator for the Jekyll Island Museum, emphasized that “the photographs, memorabilia,
and stories from the early years of the State Era are about to become a crucial part of our history that the museum needs to preserve.” As people connected to the Jekyll Island Club aged and passed away, their stories became more and more challenging to collect. “We need to begin collecting stories from today’s generations now, before the Museum faces this same problem once again,” Greminger said. The 1950’s and 60’s saw a great era of growth and change on the island.
“These stories add personality to documented events that occurred on the island, Greminger said. “It gives history a personal touch. It makes history more approachable when it is remembered by someone that was there.” The Jekyll Island Museum will present some of the State Era stories it has collected, in a public presentation entitled “Fabulous Jekyll Island.” The event will be held at 7 p.m. October 17, at the Morgan Center. Admission is free, but reservations are required. For more information call the Jekyll Island Museum at 912-635-4036.

AN HISTORIC COURSE, AN OLD MAN In 1926, golf legend Walter J. Travis declared he “was enthusiastic over the prospects at [Jekyll] for one of the most beautiful courses in the country.” Respectfully known as “The Old Man” for his relatively late introduction to the sport at age 34, Travis was once the country’s top amateur golfer. As the first three-time winner in U.S. Amateur Championship history, Travis was also the first non-British citizen to win the British Amateur Championship. Aside from his skills on the greens, Travis was also a famous golf course architect who encouraged the development of golf on Jekyll Island from the beginning. He first visited the island in 1900 to suggest improvements after Willie Dunn, Jr. completed Jekyll’s first links. Travis mentored Donald Ross, who built Jekyll Island’s second golf course in 1910. Travis also recommended Karl Keffer as the Golf Pro for the
Jekyll Island Club. It was likely Keffer who oversaw the creation of Jekyll’s first “holes in the dunes” in 1913, shifting play from the damp Donald Ross Course. Keffer’s holes were completed in 1924 and the Jekyll Island Club celebrated the opening of its new 18-hole golf course. Golf Illustrated reported that the island’s new links “remind those who have already played them of the Scotch seaside courses.” But just two years later, Jekyll Island Club Members decided to change “eight of the sixteen holes.” Among those who donated funds to construct a new golf course were George F. Baker, J.P. Morgan, Jr., Richard T. Crane, Cyrus McCormick, Jr., Edwin Gould, Cornelius Lee, and Dr. and Mrs. Walter James. Travis was hired to oversee the project. He redesigned existing holes and added several new holes that offered
breathtaking views of the nearby Atlantic Ocean and beach. This redesigned seaside course became known as the Great Dunes Golf Course.
Today, guests can still experience a classic game of golf on Jekyll Island, where the nine-hole Great Dunes Golf Course remains a lasting part of Travis’ legacy.
Opening in January of 1928, Great Dunes was one of the last courses Travis designed.
To discover more about Jekyll Island’s Gilded Era recreation and resort history, call or visit the Jekyll Island Museum on Stable Road, 912-6354036. Exhibits and tours are available daily.
Travis passed away on July 31, 1927 and, regrettably, never saw the course completed. In all, he had designed or remodeled approximately 50 golf courses throughout the country.

GEORGIA-FLORIDA GOLF CLASSIC
LET YOUR COLORS SHINE ON THE GREENS OF JEKYLL ISLAND Calling the Bulldawg Nation! Attention Gator fans! It’s time again for the annual Georgia-Florida Golf Classic, held October 30 to November 1 on Jekyll Island. Taking place on Jekyll Island’s three beautiful, 18-hole golf courses, this 34year tradition mixes golf, food and, of course, plenty of friendly fan rivalry. Wear your team colors, grab your favorite clubs, and show your school spirit in this fun-filled two-day golf classic. The winning team is honored with a recognition plaque on the Johnny Paulk Cup. A portion of all the proceeds benefits the Jekyll Island Foundation. The Classic is a two-day scramble played on Jekyll Island’s three beautiful 18-hole golf courses: Indian Mound, Pine Lakes and Oleander. Four-person teams are paired during tournament play and flighted after the first round offering more opportunities to take home more than $20,000 worth of prizes. The Classic begins Thursday and Friday mornings with a 9 a.m. shotgun start and play ends around 4 p.m. both days. Surrounding the time on the links are several exciting social events to meet fellow players and even meet a few golf and football legends. This year, it’s back! Golfers in the 2012 Georgia-Florida Golf Classic had the opportunity to play with former University of Georgia and University of Florida football stars, and so will golfers this year. Who’s taking to the greens? Representing Georgia will be Willie McClendon, Brandon Tolbert, and Russ Tanner. Gator fans can opt to play alongside Terry LeCount, Doug Johnson, or Tate Casey. Sign up your three-some for the Play with the Dawgs and Gators option on tournament registration and you’ll be able to pick which former football player you are teamed with. Teams are booked on a first come, first serve basis for each player. Beyond the greens, guests in the tournament can celebrate their scores with several social events. Players can get ready for their two days of play with a classic Tailgate Party. Players and their guests can mix and mingle the evening before their first tee time with great food, cool drinks and plenty of good cheer. The party starts at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 30, on the greens at the Jekyll Island Golf Clubhouse.
Also that evening, the island will host a special Dinner with a Legend event. This year’s host will be Rodney Hampton, a former University of Georgia running back who played for the New York Giants. Hampton spent his entire career with the Giants, playing from 1990 to 1997, and was a part of the 1991 team that won Super Bowl XXV. For the wives, significant others and close friends of the players in the tournament, the Clubhouse is additionally hosting the annual Ladies’ 9-Hole Putting Contest and Wine & Cheese Tasting Party. Join the ladies at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, October 31, to putt like a pro on the Jekyll greens, then head inside from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. for a sampling of cheese and wine, coupled with awards and prizes given to putting contestants. The tournament will likewise feature a coastal dining shindig of great proportions! Players and their guests will be treated to a Seafood Feast, complete with live entertainment, a live auction and more. The dinner party will be held from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Thursday, October 31 in the Jekyll Island Convention Center. New this year to the three-day showdown will be the SouthernPigskin.com Fan

MUSEUM
A SPIRITED EXPERIENCE AWAITS YOU Come experience the supernatural side of Jekyll Island! As a prelude to the Halloween season, Jekyll Island Museum guides tell tales of restless souls and spirit sightings on the annual “Folklore, Rumor & Myth” tour, offered every Friday evening throughout October. Along moonlit pathways, guests can explore locations where apparitions have been sighted and unexplained events have occurred, before continuing inside one of the gilded age cottages for more spine-tingling stories as darkness falls. Museum guides agree that eerie events are not isolated occurrences in the district. On dark nights, the century-old cottages have often been the location of spirit sightings. Nearly every cottage has some deep mystery or restless soul associated with a grand love story, an untimely death, a great misadventure, or a little mischief.
many years, will be shared by museum guides during the course of the one-hour folklore tour. Tour guides lean on their professional knowledge of the island’s past to interpret the strange events. Attempts to explain the island phenomena are rooted in the written records of those who visited the island long ago, and the ghostly stories focus on the history, happiness, and heartache of historical inhabitants of Jekyll Island. These reports of supernatural phenomena on Jekyll are by no means a new occurrence. Rumors of restless spirits have swirled around the Jekyll Island Club and National Historic Landmark District for dozens of years.
Both exciting and informative, these guided evening tours are a fun, and often eerie, way to explore the island’s past. The “Folklore, Rumor & Myth” tour departs at 7 p.m. every Friday in October, from the Jekyll Island Museum. Reservations are required. For information, rates or reservations, please call or visit the Jekyll Island Museum on Stable Road at 912-635-4036.
