April Sunday

22 Happy Earth Day! Celebrate by going to earthday.org and signing the largest petition in the world to save the planet.

26

Americans throw away three billion

pizza boxes per year (they aren’t recyclable because of the stains). Help cut down pizza box waste; stop into Red Tractor Pizza (1007 W. Main St.), and for all dine-in orders, receive 15 percent off your tab when you mention their Earth Day special (April 22-29).

27

Donate old clothes. Either

donate to a charitable organization (try Sack’s of Bozeman at 138 W. Mendenhall St.) or sell on online sites like craiglist.com, freecycle.org or the Bozeman Garage Sales group on Facebook.

28

Get a reusable coffee cup. Bring

your coffee cup to Sola Cafe (290 W. Kagy). They’ll donate 10 cents to a charitable organization. Don’t like dishes? Participate in Sola’s Swap a Mug program, and they’ll donate 20 cents and swap the mug out for a clean one.

29

If every household in the U.S.A.

replaced a lightbulb with a compact fluorescent lightbulb, the pollution reduction would be equivalent to removing one million cars from the road. If everyone switched, we would save enough to send every hs grad to a public university for one year.

Thursday

23 Celebrate Earth Day with MSU’s Earth Week

Celebration. Ending today at 7 p.m., the event is focused on their local food buying initiative

30

Ask your bank how you can do automatic withdrawals for

bill pay and get e-statements (local banks like First Interstate Bank offer these services). The planet could save 18.5 million trees if everyone switched to paperless statements.

friday

24 Head to the Co-op on West Main Street at 4

p.m. for their “Meet your Rancher” series. Justin Scott of Trout Culture will talk about local smoked trout. Visit the Co-op’s website for a full schedule on the “Meet your Rancher” series.

Saturday

25

Starting at 8:30 a.m., make your way

to Bogert Park for the City of Bozeman’s annual Clean Up Day. If you have any electronic waste, be sure to bring it to the Logan Landfill from 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. for their free e-waste recycling annual event. (See page 3 for more details)

Recycle your newspapers.

3

Recycling even the Sunday edition of the Bozeman Daily Chronicle can help cut the waste, and if everyone nation-wide recycled their Sunday paper, half a million trees could be saved.

10

Keep your lawn care eco-friendly.

If you water your lawn, do it in the early morning before moisture is lost to evaporation. If you have a few weeds, spot treat them with pure white vinegar.

4

Now that nicer weather is upon us, skip the dryer

and hang your clothes outside to dry. Clothes will maintain their fit and color longer this way too.

11

Annually, the United States goes through over 84 billion plastic bags. Instead, grab a

reusable bag for your groceries (grocery stores like Rosauer’s will even give you a five cent discount per bag you bring).

5

Participate in Give Big Gallatin County. Visit givebiggv.org and donate to your favorite local nonprofits and your gift will be stretched by a match pool of funds.

12

You can conserve up to five gallons of water each day

if you stop running water while brushing your teeth-that’s 1.5 billion gallons if everyone in America stopped.

6

At home and the office, print double-sided.

American businesses throw away 21 million tons of paper every year.

13

When you eat out,

do you grab a handful of paper napkins for your family? During an average year, an American uses 2,200 paper napkins.

7

Turn off your computer at night

instead of leaving it on sleep mode.

14

Now that you’ve participated in 3 weeks of going green, the last step

is to share what you know! Changes are best made when you can get your family and friends to think about how their everyday choices effect our planet.
