Under Radar the

In a place as small as the Gallatin Valley, where almost every new restaurant is hailed with an article in the newspaper, it might be hard to imagine there are any spots that go unnoticed. But there are a few that, while still known, are perhaps less trafficked — a little off the beaten path, if you will. Take, for example, El Rodeo. Tucked in the Gallatin Valley Mall off Main Street, the restaurant offers authentic tacos, burritos and enchiladas and is known by many as the best Mexican food in the area. The family-owned establishment started as a food truck (the truck is still around, and usually hangs out down the street), but not everyone knows about the mall location. If you’re interested in food hailing from even

Be sure to try the pão de queijo (cheese bread) and check out the dancing on Friday nights. The Sashimi Bar makes the list for its location alone. Packed in with at least four other bars and restaurants in the large brick Bozeman Hotel building on the corner of Rouse Avenue and Main Street, the eatery features the thinly sliced fresh raw fish of traditional sashimi, as well as sushi and twists for its weekend brunches, which includes dishes such

A tiny cottage just off U.S. Highway 191 on the drive from Bozeman to Big Sky, the cafe is attached to several cabins and an RV camp. And while the cabins are adorable (and affordable), the restaurant steals the show. Bear paw-sized homemade biscuits and jams, delicious omelettes and plenty of vegetarian-friendly options, it’s a must-visit. The cafe recently closed to folks not staying in the cabins, but reopens to the public every so often, so check their social media pages for updates. And don’t miss out on huckleberry fried pie.

Food Trucks 10

2018 Spring Dining unDer the Big Sk y

Like any self-respecting booming college town, Bozeman (and the surrounding areas) has a healthy selection of food on wheels to choose from. While the roster is growing and changing, and many of the following list can’t be found out and about during the colder months, here are a few options to get you started. For the finer palettes, there’s Sauce , a truck based on seasonal, local foods. As such, the menu is always changing, but (if they’re available) be sure to try out the truffle fries or the banh mi, which can be made vegetarian. The

truck also offers catering services. Craving some late night munchies? Look no further than Mo’ Bowls. Often strategically parked outside the Barmuda Triangle (the group of bars situated off 8th and Main), Mo’ Bowls offers a variety of delicious bowls of heavenly mac and cheese. There are meat and veggie options and, of course, deep fried mac balls. Don’t think, just go. Food trucks are traditionally marked by their comfort food style, and Poutine and Stuff is no exception. As its name suggests, the truck serves delicious fried and battered treats, oftened smothered in mouth-watering gravy. In addition to its typical poutine (french fries, cheese curds and gravy), the truck offers fried curds and tasty chicken wings with your choice of sauces ranging from garlic lime to snakebite buffalo.

food trucks continued >> Finally, a word for one of the area’s original trucks. Tumbleweeds and chef Jay Blaske have been featured in these pages before, but the truck’s Mexican fusion cuisine can’t be over-hyped. The truck’s menu features tacos and burritos, done with chicken, smoked pork shoulder, shrimp or veggies cooked in a variety of styles, from American barbecue to Korean. During the summer, trucks gather on Fridays in the parking lot outside the Architect’s Wife, an interior design store near the corner of Babcock and Willson. Many can also be found at the various farmers markets around the valley and in Big Sky.

Sweets

If you’re searching for something to satisfy that sweet tooth, your first stop should be La Châtelaine Chocolat Co. in Bozeman. Owners Shannon Hughes Grochowski and Wlady Grochowski are both extensively trained in the art of chocolate making, and it shows. At its two locations (one on South Rouse and the other in the lobby of The Baxter), La Châtelaine offers some of the best chocolates in the country. I’m particularly partial to the King Bourbon, filled with dark chocolate ganache with bourbon and geranium, and the praline with hazelnut paste. If you need more persuading, La Châtelaine was

Of course with a brewery, distillery or cider house at every turn, there are plenty of places to find an alcoholic beverage (or two).
