They’re not dragons -- but they safeguard your treasure Staff Writer

Some words are exactly what they ‘do.’ Like ‘safes’ -- they keep things safe. In sometimes-uber-wealthy Gallatin County, there is quite a demand for any business that keeps things safe. The Belgrade News talked to a local couple who found and filled their own business niche -- opening a business that both sells, installs and moves safes. Moving safes might be the most unusual, and hardest part of the business. They have the uber equipment to move safes so unwieldy that home owners can be tempted to just leave them behind if they move. Northwest Safe of Bozeman opened in September of 2022. Despite the name, it is really a Belgrade business, located at 124 Briar Place in Belgrade, along the Frontage Road near Andy’s Glass. “We are a family owned, gun safe business. We are a retail outlet for American made safes, including American Security, Browning, Liberty Safe, Rhino Metals, Superior,” said co-owner Kimberly Elhard. “We specialize in moving safes. We’re licensed and insured. We have special equipment that lets us go up and down stairs, a lift box truck, and the largest variety of safes in the state of Montana.” They also service safes in Idaho and Wyoming, and have outlets in the Spokane Valley and Enumclaw. Husband Connor grew up in the Gallatin Valley, graduating from Bozeman High Class of 2010. He’s a fireman, so of course this business also sells fire-rated safes. “That connects with his knowledge of being a fireman,” she continued. “We can get our customers to the right level of safety and security to fit their needs.” And by the way -- there is no such thing as a fire proof safe. “Fire resistant” is the industry standard. (This topic brings to mind the Andy Griffith Show’s 1962 episode, “The Bank Job.” Deputy Barney Fife thinks the

local bank doesn’t have enough security, including elderly security guard Asa who sleeps all day in the bank and has a gun older than he is. Both the Mayberry Security Bank manager and Andy are indifferent to Fife’s concerns. Fife disguises himself as a cleaning lady, steals money from the bank vault and accidently gets locked in the vault. They all know the cleaning lady thief is really Barney; he lets himself out of the vault by kicking a hole the back wall. Coincidentally, real bank robbers pick that moment to really rob the bank. Barney saves the day by unknowingly ticketing them for illegally parking in front of the bank.) Northwest Safes can’t have a concerned Barney Fife show up, but, “We offer a high security business and a Commercial TL rating,” she continued. “That means the safes are ‘tool’ rated, the highest rating for whatever tools a thief might use, grinders, torches. “We protect your valuables, your family, your guns, your kids, your cash.” What they sell runs the gamut from small, quick access pistol safes to home safes that hold documents; gun safes from 25 to 75 cubic feet; vault doors and build outs, even vault rooms. Vault rooms? “Oh yes, we get a lot of calls for that, with The Yellowstone Club here. In fact, we just installed one up there.” The idea for this business came from where? “My husband grew up here,” Kim recounted. “And we’re hunters and gun owners and Second Amendment fans. We’de kicked around the idea and wanted to start a business. So why not a gun safe business?” It’s a full service business, she joked: “We move, repair, buy back or trade.” They carry both commercial, handgun and home safes and vaults. The Belgrade News asked for a safe story: Kim said they recently were asked to look at a safe that five other movers had given up on. “It was a 3,000 com-

mercial safe,” she remembered. “And so we show up. I’m 5’2, 120 pounds. It was upstairs, had to come down 18 steps. Shimmed it in, winched it out in half an hour. Everyone was mindblown. It was hilarious.” Again -- doing the job right is all about having the right tools. Where do they see this business in the next decade? “We want to offer Montana the largest variety of gun safes; to get a customer in the right safe for your needs,” she continued. “And we recently craned in a 5,000 pound safe into a customer’s home. “If you go to a big box store, they aren’t required to know everything. We take the trouble to give people fullser-

vice safes. We can swap out locks, install lights, all the accessories to jazz up your safe. “And we offer delivery.” Anything else? “Going into business as a husband and wife is both challenging and rewarding,” she said. “In general we love meeting our customers. We meet awesome people and see some beautiful homes with awesome views. We just got back from Eureka; we do stuff all over the state, and also service idaho and Wyoming.” Store hours are Tuesday-Friday, 10-6; Saturday 10-4; and closed Sunday and Monday. Healing begins at the Billings Clinic in Bozeman By Abby Weingarten With its brand-new campus and cutting-edge facilities, the Billings Clinic Bozeman is the western Montana hub for the largest, locally-operated healthcare system in the state. Dr. Andrew Rice, a podiatrist and chief physician for the Clinic, has found great pride in taking care of the people of Gallatin and its surrounding counties. Working with the trauma center to bring patients to the main facility (which opened a year ago), Dr. Rice and the Billings Clinic staff make sure everyone in the greater local community is well-served. “This Clinic has been very important to our growing community,” Dr. Rice said. “And the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.” The facility is located on 58 acres in Bozeman, and the Clinic focuses on an optimal patient experience through flexibility and efficiency of design. The Clinic is a member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network, which provides direct

access to Mayo Clinic specialists. The new Bozeman campus offers a multispecialty clinic, an urgent care facility, and an outpatient surgery center with four operating rooms, a procedure room, and a pain management room. For the most serious cases, there is even trauma transportation available at the Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport. “We have ambulance and helicopter services, and we work with our trauma center in bringing patients from there for trauma care. We also have an urgent care facility that’s open seven days a week,” Dr. Rice said. “Our ambulatory facility has grown in a year in outpatient surgery. We’ll be adding an additional neurologist and expanding our orthopedic services in sports medicine. It’s a 50-plus-acre campus, so this Clinic is just the first phase of the development, and it’s exciting.” The Billings Clinic is located at 3905 Wellness Way, Bozeman. Staying fit in Belgrade at Cove Athletic Club By Karen E. Davis Staff Writer

When Amanda Molock first decided to open Cove Athletic Club in Belgrade in 2019, there was nothing like it in the area. Since the expansion in December 2021, the spot has grown exponentially, and the impact on its health-conscious members has been profound. “When we first opened, there were no big gyms whatsoever in the area; there were just smaller ones that didn’t have classes or a kids’ club,” Molock said. “Our demographic is mainly younger families, so filling a need to have childcare attached to the Club has been huge.” The state-of-the-art facility offers free weights and plate-loaded equipment; a cycle studio and a group fitness studio; one-on-one sessions with certified personal trainers; and a full roster of classes (from high-intensity interval training and Barre to hill climbing and mind-clearing yoga). There are locker rooms, showers, hydromassage machines, saunas, a smoothie/coffee bar with whole-foods-based treats and beverages, and for-sale supplements, as well as Cove Kids (an in-house childcare program for babies and children ages six months to 12 years). The address hasn’t changed since the opening, but the basketball court (with its six hoops, lockers, and bleachers) was added, and Cove Kids is now bigger. Altogether, the Club boasts about 24,000 square feet of space. New clients start their memberships with a complimentary consultation involving a fitness assessment to map out goals and expectations. “We’ve gotten so much praise and positive feedback, and we’ve been told that Cove has been a lifesaver, a gamechanger,” Molock said. “This is from people who weren’t going to the gym at all because they had to drive all the way to Bozeman. Now they’ve met friends and built such a community here, and it’s like a family.” Cove Athletic Club is located at 59 Village Dr., Belgrade. For more information, call 406-924-2359 or visit coveathleticclub.com.

Montana Flooring Center has the Gallatin Valley covered By Abby Weingarten With decades of combined experience in flooring installation and home building, the local owners of the Montana Flooring Center find joy in offering customers a “quaint, hometown feel.” The Center, which opened five years ago, is currently expanding its square footage from 2,300 to 10,000 to serve even more residents of the Gallatin Valley area. “There is so much growth in the Gallatin Valley, especially in our field, that we felt the community could use another flooring store with what we have to offer,” said co-owner Shante Gordon, who launched the Center with Mike Gordon and Teddy Arts. “We enjoy seeing projects through from start to finish. Whether it’s a small remodel, a custom home, or a subdivision buildout, we pride ourselves in being thorough with all the details and helping make projects run smoothly.” Value is also key, and the Center’s team makes sure its customers find

affordable solutions to their residential and commercial projects. Tile selections range from entry-level to highend options, all of which are known for being high-quality and durable. The Center also carries a vast array of engineered, solid, and site-finished products. There are thousands of samples for customers to peruse in the showroom, and the staff provides guidance, inspiration, and hands-on assistance. Every step of the process—from the purchasing to the project management—is treated with customized care. “We are excited to be currently renovating a building downtown Belgrade, which will allow us to showcase more products to better serve our clientele,” Shante Gordon said. “We appreciate all the support from our customers and builders, and we look forward to welcoming them into our new space when it opens.” Montana Flooring Center is located at 23 W. Main St., Belgrade. For more information, call 406-924-6442 or visit mtflooringcenter.com.

Cornhole is the craze at the American Legion in Manhattan By Abby Weingarten Every Thursday night is cornhole central at the American Legion in Manhattan, when 30-plus teams compete in the popular lawn game. Cornhole has brought scores of enthusiasts to Manhattan Post 87 since 2013, and the Legion is now a gathering place for veterans and civilians from the greater Gallatin Valley. “It all started when we had a mutual cornhole tournament with the neighboring bar, and one of the players convinced me to put a league together,” said Post 87 manager Rod McKay. “We started out with 14 teams and only held the league once a year.” In 2015, McKay and his crew added another season. The following year, they tacked on a co-ed league. Post 87 recently started a singles’ team and a women’s double league. In total, there are now five leagues per calendar year. On Mondays (minus the second one of each month), the cornhole players assemble at the Post, and tens of teams gather on Thursdays from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. “We have over 100 people that consistently play here. We have Blind Draws on Mondays during the winter and Tuesdays during the summer. Blind draws are just people showing up and being placed with a partner,” McKay said. “It’s by far the least competitive of all the formats because it’s just people who just want to throw and are looking for something to do without a season-long commitment.” All American Legions are open to the public, and so is the cornhole league. As word of the cornhole fun spreads, the sport continues to unify the community. “It’s been a great relationship with the community and a great experience for all of us,” McKay said. The American Legion in Manhattan is located at 218 E. Main St., Manhattan. For more information, call 406-284-6138.

Backyard harvest: Cidery’s ‘backyard blend’ to benefit local nonprofits, Belgrade orchestra Isabel Hicks

Chronicle Staff Writer

Outside the Lockhorn Cider House in downtown Bozeman, hundreds of pounds of apples, crabapples and pears are stacked into bins. All donated from locals with excess fruit on their trees, the cider house’s annual haul will soon be pressed into “Bozeman’s Backyard Blend,” a cider that’s served on tap come winter. Each year the backyard blend tastes different, depending on the year’s apple crop and individual flavor of each gifted fruit. Sales from the backyard blend then go back into the community. This year the proceeds are benefitting the Haven domestic violence shelter, Gallatin Watershed Council and the Belgrade school orchestra. Collection bins will be at the cidery through Sunday. For every 25 pounds of fruit donated, people can receive a token for a pint of cider. Last year’s crabapple-heavy backyard blend is on tap right now. There are non-alcoholic options available at the cidery too. Anna Deal, owner of Lockhorn Cider House, said this year’s apple crop is the best she’s seen in five years. “The trees are just absolutely loaded. The conditions were perfect,” Deal said. “We’re going to break records, I’m sure.” Deal said Tuesday that so far, people’s donations have filled nearly 13 full bins — equal to 11,700 pounds of fruit that will yield over 750 gallons of cider. Last year, donated fruit yielded 250 gallons. Lightly bruised fruits are okay to donate, but the cider house has to throw out anything that’s rotting or moldy, Deal said. The cider house started its backyard

blend project five years ago. Countless people in Bozeman have leftover fruit from apple, crabapple and pear trees that would otherwise go to waste, Deal said — so she decided to invite the community to give Lockhorn their excess fruit for the backyard blend. Donating the proceeds from the blend is a great way to give back to local groups and nonprofits, and also helps manage attractants for bears and other wildlife, Deal said. “It’s been a great project where it’s kind of a win all around,” Deal said. This year, Lockhorn has a new partner they’re excited to support: the Belgrade middle and high school orchestra. There are fruit donation bins

outside both schools through Friday. The orchestra is in the midst of fundraising for a trip next June to France, where they were invited to perform in Normandy and Paris to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day. Belgrade’s orchestra was the only one in Montana invited by the group Music Celebrations International to come perform, said orchestra director Cindy Stone. But while the opportunity to perform, honor veterans and learn more about World War II is invaluable to students, it does have a high price tag, Stone said. The orchestra will need to raise around $170,000 for 40 students to go on the trip.

The schools have raised roughly $60,000 already, Stone said, but Lockhorn is helping students raise more. For every pound of apples donated to the bins outside the schools — or harvested from the community by students — the cider house will donate 20 cents. Last week, students and parents helped glean apples from an orchard in Sypes Canyon. The orchard’s hundred-year-old trees yielded some 3,000 pounds of fruit for the orchestra’s efforts, according to Deal. While there are donation bins outside the Belgrade schools, people can also donate apples at Lockhorn and CONTINUED ON PAGE 26

say they want them to go to the orchestra, Deal said. The orchestra also has plans to launch an online fundraising platform soon, Stone said. In the meantime, anyone who wants to contribute can send a check to the school. Stone said she’s hopeful the partnership with Lockhorn will raise around $1,000. “It’s not a lot necessarily, but every little bit counts,” Stone said. “Our community is extremely supportive… I’m very appreciative of all they do to help.”
