‘14 Stroll Poster Winners

T

he Downtown Bozeman Association has announced

the winners of their annual poster contest for the Christmas Stroll. Mark and Kelly Harro of Homespun Harros submitted their work of a sketched buffalo wearing a red Santa Claus hat that will now be the design for this year’s stroll.

“It popped out immediately,” said Ellie Staley, Program Director of the DBA. “It’s not as traditional as we’ve gone with in the past.” With over thirty submissions, the DBA was able to narrow it down to three top choices, but the voting for the Harro’s design was unanimous. Taking second place is “Bulbs” by Beth Lee. The third place design winner is the “Montana Santa Dawn Patrol” by Megan Keenan. In her ninth year as Director for the stroll, Staley has always been a part of the voting for the poster contest, but this year’s contest gave her a hard time making a final decision. “This was a really great year for poster entries,” she said. The Harros, who sell their artwork through Etsy and at the Emerson’s Tart gallery, are a husband and wife team who love to make collaborative art that juxtaposes colorful patterns with original drawings of animals. “We like it, because he’s charging at you, but he has a Santa hat on,” said Kelly of the design. For the piece, Kelly made the buffalo plaid background and the fonts while Mark did the drawing of the buffalo. “Usually how we work is we come up with an idea together,” said Kelly. Then, Mark will sketch concepts and the pair will discuss them to figure out any changes. “Mark does the actual drawing of the animal in pen and ink, and I take that and put it through the computer and add all the color and the background,” she said. Mark, an Alaska-native and Montana State University alum, thought the design worked well not only for the stroll but as a representation for the city

By Stevie Croisant Chronicle Staff Writer of Bozeman. “We’re so Western in this part of Bozeman, but we’re also a fun town, and there’s a lot of young people in this town, and they’re always doing fun stuff. Our design is Western, but it’s also updated and whimsical and fun and lighthearted.” The design is also something that will stand out to children, according to Kelly. “We thought kids would also really like the image, because it’s a pretty iconic animal and it’s a bright, colorful image,” she said. While the couple has been in Bozeman together for two Christmas Strolls, this was their first submission to the poster contest. “It comes to a point where year after year you’re like, ‘Man, I would make such a good image on that poster. How come we haven’t done that yet?’ And then finally, we’re like, ‘We need to try.’” Although the couple knew their design was different than past winners, they were excited to submit their piece no matter the odds. “We had no idea how many people entered this contest and you don’t know who’s going to have a really good design also. All we could do was put our best foot forward and give it a shot, and when it comes out in your favor, it’s a good thing,” said Mark. “I’m excited we get to share this piece of us with Bozeman.” Both are excited to see their artwork hung around town. Kelly even thinks it will look like a “big herd of buffalo on Main Street.” Still, the pair is even more excited to join the community in the Emerson Cultural Center where they will be signing posters of their artwork. “It will be fun to meet some Bozeman locals and talk to them about some of the silly stuff we do and have them meet us, because we like meeting people too. We love the Emerson, and we love being a part of this community, so it will be fun signing posters there,” Mark said. The couple will be in the Emerson during the Christmas Stroll from 1–2 p.m. 2nd Place Poster Design (on the left): “Bulbs” by Beth Lee 3rd Place Poster Design (on the right): “Montana Santa Dawn Patrol” by Megan Keenan

Come in during the Christmas Stroll for a sneak peak!

holiday open house

The commemorative Christmas Stroll button is often collected each year as a souvenir of the community’s annual celebration. What many often do not realize is the button is more than just a collection piece--sales from the buttons go toward supporting the free Christmas Stroll. Like strolls from years past, this year is no different. “Like all events hosted by the Downtown Bozeman Association, these are free community events and paid for 100 percent by our sponsors and sales from the buttons,” said DBA Program Director Ellie Staley. While the buttons aren’t required to attend the Christmas Stroll, they are necessary to participate in the hay wagon rides from Soroptimist Park, pictures with Santa Claus at the Baxter Hotel and the gingerbread house decorating contest at the Emerson

Cultural Center. Each button is only $4, and the sales help pay for the hay wagon rides, Santa picture expenses and rentals, police enforcement, city permitting expenses, generators, port-o-potties, street decorations, advertising and marketing materials and more, which end up costing the DBA, a nonprofit group, over $10,000. The blue button decorated with a white reindeer can be purchased now at many downtown locations. “This really supports the future of the event,” Staley said of the button sales. When purchasing Christmas Stroll buttons, fill out a ballot to be entered to win one of 18 prizes including six Bridger Bowl passes, downtown dollar prizes or passes to the Museum of the Rockies. Winners will be contacted the week after the stroll.

Buttons are available now for purchase at the following locations:

New Stroll Traditions

W

hen Michigan native Chris Chambers found out he would become a part of a new Bozeman Christmas tradition, he called home to share the news with his mother.

Chambers, who is supervisor for the HRDC’s Warming Center for the homeless, will be joining Santa Claus in his sleigh for the 34th annual Christmas Stroll as Master of Ceremonies for the parade. The need for a new tradition arose as the Downtown Bozeman Association (DBA) saw the attendance of the stroll increase year after year. “We need someone to help Santa,” said Ellie Staley, Program Director at the DBA. “We wanted someone with personality who would be good at directing people and getting them into the holiday spirit.” When the DBA met to brainstorm ideas for a possible emcee, Chamber’s name was mentioned and it was an instant unanimous decision to get him on board, according to Staley. “Chris is known in the community. He does wonderful things (with the Warming Center). He’s someone who can be a good representation for our community for the parade.” Starting his interview off with jokes and funny personal anecdotes, it was clear Chambers is a natural at connecting with people. “I’m a self-proclaimed master of fun,” he said. “I enjoy interacting with people and this is such a lovely opportunity to do that and be a guide to help rally the community during such a joyous time. I don’t know what it’s going to be like exactly, but it’s going to be a good time.” At 4:30 p.m., Chambers will accompany Santa for the parade ride beginning at the intersection of Grand and Main Streets. From there, he will do everything from pep cheers, to start songs, cue people and—the part Chambers is most excited for—he leads the countdown for Santa to light the Christmas lights. While Chambers has never been an emcee for an event before, he knows this one-shot deal as the Christmas Stroll Master of Ceremonies is something he can handle. With his career, Chambers often works with teenagers facilitating group activities and discussion. He has led a group of over 200 participants before in Livingston. “The intention of the event is that this is a magical night for the residents and the children of Bozeman to see Santa Claus, and if that’s the intention, then nothing can go wrong,” he said. As excited as Chambers is to bring joy to the annual Stroll, he’s equally excited to bring awareness to the Warming Center through his role of emcee. “I think it would be really cool to bring into people’s collective consciousness in the Bozeman area that there are a lot of people who are really struggling in this community.” Over half of the guests at the Warming Center have been Gallatin County residents for over a year and approximately 25 percent of all guests are female. This season, the Warming Center has upwards of thirty guests per night, said Chambers, and is supported entirely by community donations, whether that be in the form of supplies, financial assistance or time. “The biggest push right now is we need financial support or we’re not going
