The Downtown Bozeman Association presents:
The 42nd Annual Christmas Stroll Poster Contest Winner!
The Christmas Stroll has been one of the longest-standing Bozeman community traditions! This year, the Downtown Bozeman Association put out a “Call for Art” for the official Christmas Stroll Poster design. In addition to the notoriety of having their artwork featured, a $200 cash prize will be issued to the winning artist!
This year bought a whole array of festive and imaginative designs! The winning poster stood out with its fresh and fun take on a Bozeman Christmas.
The 2022 Christmas Stroll Poster Contest Winner is Ian Rezac! Rezac was born in
Longmont, Colorado and has his hand in various creative outlets ranging from logo design for bands, hand-sewn backpacks and jackets, commissioned artwork, and custom leatherwork for guitarists! You can find more of Ian’s artwork on his Instagram @ rezac_art_and_design.
The winning design showcases a Bozeman Christmas through a retro lens with a nod to our agricultural backbone and sprinkled with a bit of humor!
The 2022 Christmas Stroll poster design by Rezac will adorn all businesses in Downtown Bozeman and will be featured on all event collateral.
Christmas Stroll Button Tradition Continues
In its 42nd year, the Christmas Stroll has become a Bozeman tradition for all ages. One decades-long staple of the event is the Stroll Button. The Downtown Bozeman Association creates, purchases and distributes the annual commemorative buttons. The designs come from either local artist submissions or area design team PRIME.
This year PRIME graphic designer Katie Pierce crafted a wintery pattern featuring a snowflake. The buttons
will be $4 each (also coming with an entry to drawings for various prize packages) and are currently available to purchase at the Downtown Bozeman Association’s office at 222 E. Main #302 and various other locations across town.
All sales go towards funding the Christmas Stroll, Downtown Bozeman Partnership Program Director Cache Perdue said. All sales go towards funding the Christmas Stroll, Downtown Bozeman

Community
By Jennifer VerzuhAlthough this will be his first time operating in an official capacity at the Bozeman Christmas Stroll, Billy McWilliams has been a fixture at the event for years. This year’s Master of Ceremonies, he first attended the festivities in the 1990s, and values its place in the community.
“I’ve been downtown for a lot of Christmas Strolls,” he said. “It’s a great community event [and] a great tradition because it brings everybody together: family, friends and visitors. And they can just have fun in downtown Bozeman.”
McWilliams is excited for his role as MC, and hopes to do his best to help
jumpstart the holiday season.
in a grand tradition”
in roles at Stroll
“The job is to listen to what people want, make them happy and start Christmas in a grand tradition.”
But, he also wants to make sure the night’s focus remains on its true star: Santa Clause.
“I’m there for Santa,” McWilliams said. “I want to highlight Santa and get everybody excited [to] light up downtown and start Christmas.”
All eyes will be on Santa Clause at the Stroll as he leads the parade, lights the holiday “spiders” on Main Street and takes photos with children in the Baxter Hotel.
“At the stroll I get to be [this]
magical force,” this year’s Santa Frank Marble said.
It will be Marble’s second time don ning the red hat and cap at the Christmas Stroll, though he’s no stranger to the getup. He’s been the Gallatin Valley Mall’s Santa for a decade, and maintains that his favorite part of the job is simply the opportunity to inter act with all the children that visit him.
“I just enjoy sitting with the kids,” he said.
Like McWilliams, Marble has at tended the Stroll for decades, first vis iting in the early 1980s while attend
ing MSU and says it’s just a “good time” for everyone involved.
“I think the stroll just helps to bring the essence of the season for those that are able to attend,” Marble said. “Everybody comes together for really one reason, and that’s to get a taste of the season, the peace and the joy, [and] fellowship.”
This year will be the 42nd Annual Christmas Stroll celebration. The free holiday event featuring music, Santa, a parade and more is set to take place in downtown Bozeman on Saturday Dec. 3 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.

FUN FACTS & STORIES
about the Downtown Bozeman Holiday Decorations
Bozeman Firefighters have been involved with decorating the downtown for the Christmas holiday since the early 1960’s. The earliest in volvement was maintaining and install ing different holiday decorations which hung from the streetlight poles.
The decorations currently consist of four 24-foot-tall center pipe extend ing from a 6’ circle of steel at the base. There are approximately 12 lengths of chain that extend from the ring to the top of the pole. When set up it forms the familiar cone shape which has been interpreted as a bell, tree, or the body
of a spider.
The decorations were originally erected using the Bozeman Fire Depart ment’s 1955 Pirsch Ladder Truck. It’s reported that in the early days of the decorations the ladder truck would be brought out to replace ONE burned out bulb.
In 2018 the Downtown Business Improvement District replaced all the bulbs with LED versions for energy conservation and longevity.
The lights are lit during the Bozeman Christmas Stroll by Santa Claus who magically lights them with confetti and
holiday spirit coming from the crowds and prompted by Santa and the Master of Ceremonies.
In approximately 2002 the decora tions were featured on an HGTV television program about small town Christmas celebrations.
In December of 2009 we were shut down by the Montana Department of Labor for almost an hour while we waited for a copy of our Crane opera tor’s license and an appropriate number of hard hats to be on location.
At the 2021 Christmas Stroll, high winds blew over the green intersection
decoration. Several city departments immediately responded to the incident, cleared the area, and began the removal of the damaged spider. At the time of the incident, the Annual Christmas Stroll event was just beginning, and crowds were in full-swing. The parade was rerouted down Black Avenue after lighting the three remaining “Holiday Spiders.” After a year of repairs, our green decoration is back in 2022.
